BeBop Sensors Smart Fabric Sensors add MPE to KMI K-Board Pro 4

BEBOP SMART FABRIC SENSORS ENABLE FIRST 3D EXPRESSIVE KEYBOARD: K-BOARD PRO 4 MPE CONTROLLER

SmartFabric™ Sensors Provide Multiple Dimensions of Touch Sensitivity in Each Key for Info on Attack & Release Velocity, Continuous Pressure, Horizontal & Vertical Position, and Poly Aftertouch Messages for the Deepest Level of Musical Expression

“With K-Board Pro 4, we’ve taken the format of a traditional keyboard and updated it for the 21st Century. With our BeBop Sensors SmartFabric™ Sensors underneath each key, you can tweak any synthesis parameter in real time by moving your fingers while you are playing. The MIDI MPE Standard is the future for expressive controllers and we have designed the K-Board Pro 4 to be the ultimate MPE Controller.” -Keith McMillen, Founder & CEO, BeBop Sensors

June 18, 2019, Berkeley, CA, USA – BeBop Sensors www.bebopsensors.com, the world leader in Smart Fabric Sensors, has partnered with KMI to announce the official release of the K-Board Pro 4 MPE Controller. Created with BeBop Sensors SmartFabric™ Sensors, the K-Board Pro 4 is a four-octave MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) MIDI keyboard controller based on the traditional keyboard layout, but with multiple dimensions of touch sensitivity in each key. The K-Board Pro 4 sends information on musical subtleties, including attack velocity, release velocity, continuous pressure, horizontal position and vertical position data to offer the deepest level of musical expression. It can also send Poly Aftertouch messages for communication with expressive legacy controllers.

“I’m excited that Keith McMillen, BeBop and KMI are bringing out the K-Board Pro 4, further expanding the next generation of expressive keyboard instruments! It’s a joy to play and their expertise in the field of sensor technology and delivering great musical products makes this instrument a guaranteed winner,” said Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater.

MIDI MPE Standard is Future for Expressive Controllers & K-Board Pro 4 is the Ultimate MPE Controller

MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) is the newest development in MIDI; a standard specification that allows easy integration of multiple, polyphonic per-key dimensions of expressive control. To capture all of this nuanced gesture, K-Board Pro 4 features BeBop Sensors’ patented Smart Sensor Technology, developed in conjunction with KMI. K-Board Pro 4 is USB powered and MIDI class compliant to ensure both portability and compatibility with MacOS, Windows, iOS, Android, as well as MIDI capable hardware.

K-Board Pro 4 is available immediately from the KMI website at: keithmcmillen.com.

Unusual Electronic Music Controllers From KMI At NAMM 2019

Published on Feb 3, 2019 Synthtopia

"At the 2019 NAMM Show, Keith McMillen Instruments was showing a complete line of unusual music controllers.

Their line is based around 'Smart Fabric', which means that it doesn't rely on movable parts, like most instruments and music gear. The technology also allows the devices to sense a variety of types of touch, allowing the controllers to be used in very expressive ways."

0-Coast, Pico Modules, DRM1 Mixed by K-Mix and Sequenced by Beatstep Pro

Published on Nov 6, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio

"This video shows the Keith McMillen K-Mix being used as a standalone mixer with drums from a Vermona DRM1 MKIII and synth sounds from the Make Noise 0-Coast and Erica Synths Pico Modules. Everything in the video is sequenced by the Arturia Beatstep Pro. The built in compressors, EQs and Reverb effects on the K-Mix were used as well.

The K-Mix is a compact 8 channel mixer with no knobs or faders to break off and built in DSP EQ, compression, noise gate and reverb. It can also be used as an 8 input 10 output USB soundcard for your computer.

Expressive E Touche Controller With QuNexus and Shared System

Published on Jun 16, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio

"In this video, we experiment with integrating the Expressive E Touche into the modular paradigm via the Make Noise Black and Gold Shared System with Morphagene.

In the first patch, the Touche acts as a source for articulation (as in its ancestor, the ondes Martenot) and pitch information. The Keith McMillen QuNexus provides pitch information to the DPO while the Touche provides secondary "pitch bend" info. The Touche also controls the DPO's Fold and Optomix's level controls for timbre and articulation control. Finally, the Touche also controls the Echophon's mix, allowing the dynamic addition of pseudo-harmonies to the DPO's raw timbre. With the right pitch source, the Touche becomes an excellent articulator for both dynamics and timbre.

In the second patch, the Touche provides four control voltages to the Morphagene and Erbe Verb. The Morphagene has previously been loaded with sounds from within the Shared System itself. The Touche controls the Erbe Verb's Size, Decay, and built in modulation source as well as the Morphagene's Morph, Slide, and Gene Size controls. The end result is a glitchy, prickly, and nuanced soundscape brought to life by the Touche."

Modal Announces MPE Support For Its Synthesizers

Published on Apr 28, 2017 Synthtopia

"At Superbooth 17, Modal Electronic announced that it has added MPE support to its synths.

We got a quick overview of the update and a demo of MPE control with a Keith McMillen K-Board Pro 4.

Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression is a new standard that allows for more expressive performances to be communicated using MIDI. With MPE, you have full continuous control over the pitch, timbre, volume, etc of each individual note when performing polyphonically."

Simple Wednesday

Published on Mar 29, 2017 Henry Birdseye Jr.

"I thought I'd just sit down and make up some synth-ey tuneage yesterday. I set up two extremely simple sequencer lines and changed the melody, such as it is, by twisting a couple knobs. Then I turned up the delay on the reverb and the notes began to kind of collide and reinforce each other. Anyway, here's a video of me cranking it out, and you can see my complete lack of technique.

Roland JU-06 - Roland Demora - Keith McMillen K-Board

Published on Feb 17, 2017 Alba Ecstasy

"A patch I made on Roland JU-06, during the last session yesterday. JU-06 is controlled by Keith McMillen K-Board - a nice controller that allows me to give to the JU-06 an analog drift feeling by K-Board's Tilt & Press functions. Roland Demora plays an important role, contributing with its magnificent (on my taste, sure) stereo delay.

Enjoy and have a great weekend, my friends!

PS: Roland JU-06 patches - soon!"
