Inside a Mellotron M400: How the Mellotron Works

Published on Nov 27, 2017

"Here's a look inside a Mellotron M400 we just restored and an explanation of how it works! The famous (or notorious) Mellotron M400, made in the 1970s, is a unique keyboard instrument in which every key plays back a recording of that note on actual magnetic tape.

This Mellotron (#1344) was restored by Alison Stout at Bell Tone Synth Works in Philadelphia, PA. Read more about this and other vintage keyboard restorations on our blog at http://belltonesynthworks.com!"

Dave Smith Instruments In The Spotlight With the OB-6 and Kat Day

Read the full interview with Kat Day on Dave Smith Instruments here.

"Kat Day is one half of the British Berlin-based audio visual duo, The KVB. Originally formed in London in 2010, the pair is known for their prolific output, and has released 5 albums and a number of EPs. In the past year alone they have toured Asia, Latin America, and Europe, along with festival shows in South Africa and San Francisco. They are currently working on their follow up to 2016’s Of Desire which was recorded at Geoff Barrow’s (Portishead, Beak) studio in Bristol and released on Barrow’s label, Invada Records.

We chatted with Kat about how she’s using the OB-6."

Delia Derbyshire Honored with Posthumous PhD

via theguardian

"The under-appreciated electronic music pioneer behind the Doctor Who theme is to be honoured posthumously with a doctorate from her hometown university as the programme gears up for the debut of its first female lead.

Largely ignored in life and barred from working in studios because she was a woman, Delia Derbyshire, will be awarded an honorary PhD from Coventry University on Monday."

---

This one was sent in via MATRIXSYNTH Reader Gareth.

An interesting side note is that I once almost picked up Delia Derbyshire's EMS VCS3/Putney. Peter Kember, aka Sonic Boom of Spectrum and Spacemen 3 fame, was selling it along with a Synton Syrinx years ago, before I started this format of MATRIXSYNTH. I seem to remember he wanted around $7k or so for it at the time, but I might wrong. I didn't have the funds so I passed. Also, a little unknown bit of synth history is that EMS sent the BBC an EMS SYNTHI 100 during the time Delia Derbyshire was there, and she actually did not take to it. It is my understanding that she preferred to work with tape. Curious what she might have thought of a Buchla, as the focus of Buchla was to compliment electronic music composition on tape.

Dave Smith Instruments In the Spotlight With the Prophet-6 and Tom Darom

You can find the full interview with Tom Darom here.

"Tom Darom is an Israeli producer, composer and keyboardist based in Tel Aviv, Israel. She tours and records with the Balkan Beat Box as keyboardist and programmer, is A&R/creative director for APE Records, and is also a composer for TV, film, and media. Her recent work, Shadow of Truth, is a 4-part documentary on Netflix. She received the DocAviv Best Original Music award in 2016 for the documentary Death in the Terminal. The movie also won the Best Israeli Film award.

“I live in an environment that is a melting pot of cultures, rhythms, religions, languages, and conflict. This obviously filters into the art that’s produced here. Many of my scores cover these issues. Much of the music I produce, and artists I work with are an intricate weave of eastern and western influences. Our generation is fortunate to be able to search for what defines our complex identity. From this a new, hybrid middle-eastern sound has been born.

We chatted with Tom about how she’s using the Prophet-6."

Erica Synths Pico MScale demo

Published on Nov 8, 2017 Erica Synths

via Erica Synths

"Erica Pico MSCALE (Moog Scale, to be specific) is precision scaler to adapt Moog Mother 32 to eurorack standard 1V/oct control voltages.

Those, who own Moog Mother 32 know, that it requires -5V - +5V on 1V/oct input to operate in full range, while the eurorack standard is 0V - +10V. So, to control Moog Mother 32 from a eurorack sequencer you need to bias a sequencer output for 5 volts down. And vice versa – Moog Mother 32 sequencer outputs -5V - +5V on 1V/oct output, and, if you wish to control some eurorack VCO from Moog Mother 32, you need to bias it 5 volts up. This is exactly what MSCALE does – it has two sections – upper one adds 5V to the input voltage, other subtracts 5V form the input voltage. Of course, the module is not limited for use with Moog Mother 32 only. You can use it as a regular eurorack precision voltage scaler.

Features:

Precision scaler to adapt Moog Mother 32 1V/oct to eurorack standard
Moog to eurorack section
Eurorack to Moog section
High precision, high temperature stability
Skiff friendly, compact design
With Pico Series we challenged ourselves – can we make ANY superior functionality synth module 3HP wide and affordable? Yes, we can."

Inspired: The Journey of Discovering My Famous Father | Michelle Moog-Koussa | TEDxAsheville

Published on Oct 18, 2017 TEDx Talks

"Although I knew my father for the 37 years that we were here on Earth together, I never really knew his public persona, Bob Moog, until he passed away. The path of discovery that followed has provided a deep well of inspiration, which has lead me on a journey to carry on his powerful legacy transforming people's lives through sonic exploration. Inspiration is a powerful cultural resource, and we must use it to do the most good for our challenged society. Michelle Moog-Koussa is the daughter of synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog. She has been the executive director of the Bob Moog Foundation for eleven years, and has spearheaded educational and historic preservation projects which inspire children and adults thought the science, music, technology and the spirit of invention. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx"

This is a great talk including not only some fascinating bits of synth history, but a rare glimpse of Bob Moog's personal life, from non other than his own daughter, Michelle Moog-Koussa.

Waterflower // Live @ Erica Synths Garage

Published on Nov 4, 2017 Erica Synths

"Waterflower performs live with vocals, using a Roland VT-3 voice transformer and a Boss RC-505 loopstation with pre-composed samples (ikaossilator, field recordings, CC0 found samples and MIDI), playing a Korg Microsampler keyboard with custom samples; 2x Dentaku Ototo capactive synthesizers connected to a plant as a keyboard; Korg Volca Keys; Crystal acrylic electric violin; Firestix Drumsticks.

'Waterflower ' is artist Sabine Moore’s audiovisual performance project. Sabine Moore’s intertwined music and visual presence is an audiovisual journey into a unique world where sound and moving image have come together like an orchestral ensemble. Musically, Waterflower draws upon genres like Electronica, Experimental Pop and Ambient. Her multi-layered compositions are created from sampled sounds like toy beeps, running water, glass beads, gardening tools, and are then mixed with synthesizers, orchestral sounds - like the violin, ghostly piano melodies and her sublime vocals. On stage, a live potted plant is transformed into a touch-sensitive synthesizer using capacitive sensors. A similar technique also allows a separate plant to also act as a real-time midi controller for the artist’s visuals. The video animations display themes such as nature, science and the interaction of the two. One could say that “Waterflower” is like a sci-fi journey to a world outside of our time-line."

Published on Oct 26, 2017 Clara Venice

♡ Hello bbz! So this is my Halloween viddy for 2017 - it's my take on the "Stranger Things" opening title theme.

"Stranger Things" is one of my fav shows, and of course I love the soundtrack so much - which is why I had the idea for composing a theremin accompaniment.

The original "Stranger Things" theme is by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein.

Hope you enjoy the video, and until next time - stay strange.

Love, Clara xx

Steffi - In The Studio

Published on Oct 24, 2017 FACTmagazine

Follow-up to her Against the Clock performance here.

"Steffi shows us her slick studio full of unusual vintage gear

Dutch techno icon Steffi made her massive Against The Clock session look easy, effortlessly gliding from synth to synth in her compact studio to create a tightly-wound electro track in just 10 minutes.

After the time was up, the Ostgut Ton regular and Panorama Bar resident talked us through what she did and how she did it, giving us a guided tour of her enviable gear collection at the same time.

Steffi’s got all the classics you’d expect in her studio – a TR-808 drum machine, a Minimoog for basslines – but also a few unusual items, like the Waldorf synth she uses for string sounds and a Sequentix Cirklon sequencer. Check it out above and watch her go Against The Clock."
