PolyFreq Introduces Phonon Plug-In Debut as Precision Granular Laboratory for Sonic Alchemy

video upload by PolyFreq

Press release follows:

PolyFreq pitches availability of Phonon plug-in debut as precision granular laboratory for sonic alchemy

BRISTOL, UK: boutique musical tools-maker PolyFreq is proud to announce availability of Phonon as its debut plug-in — pitched as a precision laboratory for sonic alchemy, built around a high-quality sample granulation engine with root note detection, four keyboard follow modes, and legato giving it real versatility as a playable instrument — as of May 5…

Acting as a musical synthesiser first and foremost, Phonon is designed for very intentional, controllable reconstruction of one source, leaning into synchronous granular or ‘graintable’ synthesis. Sub-sample grain scheduling and separate grain rate and density controls open new vistas of repeatable, controllable timbre and tempo across macro and micro parameter ranges. Reality dictates that where other granular synths default to randomisation or multiple sources, Phonon provides users with complete control over every grain — from classic textural clouds to malleable ‘grainwave’ synthesis. Indeed, it is equal parts laboratory and playground.

“Phonon’s development was inspired by the great creativity of early granular work from composers such as Wishart and Roads, and the deep listening of Oliveros, with a desire to make this wild, creative territory more accessible to electronic music production and sound design, without stripping away what makes it strange and inspirational.” So says PolyFreq founder Nick Mariette by way of an illuminating introduction. It aims for ease of use, with a simple drag-and-drop workflow for modulation, and most features are immediately visible, with minimal menus or hidden options. And a flexible array of audio-rate modulation sources provide huge scope for patches that respond and evolve, including LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators), envelopes, sample metadata, sequencers, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) control data, and various noise flavours.

Features additionally worthy of the edited highlights treatment here include Phonon’s granular engine — eight voices of polyphony with up to 256 grains per voice and sub-sample precision that bridges the gap between classic textures and sharp ‘graintable’ synthesis; effects — shape sounds with a character-driven signal chain, from saturating drive to resonant filtering, as well as a utility reverb for glue or depth; presets — easily capture, export, evolve, and share sonic creations with sample embedding and eight-way snapshots; and drag-and-drop workflow in a resizeable interface for easy enjoyment as a standalone instrument or for plug-in-based DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) production.

Phonon’s uses are almost endless — think time stretching; pitch shifting; sample mangling; sound design; classic textural, granular clouds; synchronous, tuned granular tone creation; creating a synth from any sample; rhythmic grain generation, synced to host; beat retiming and timbre distortion; and more besides. Back to Nick Mariette: “Phonon is intended for reshaping beats and designing synth leads as much as for losing time in ethereal granular atmospheres; I hope it will connect people to listening differently, discovering the sounds within sounds.”

Anyone attending SUPERBOOTH26, May 7-9, FEZ-Berlin, Germany is hereby encouraged to swing by Booth H116 there, where PolyFreq will be showcasing Phonon to the musical masses assembled and Nick Mariette himself will be on hand to personally provide a warm welcome with an open invitation to discover those sounds within sounds. Spanning chaotic clouds to precise synthesis, controllable sonic alchemy is there for the taking so why not take this hands-on opportunity to discover and delight in vibrating matter differently with Phonon!

Phonon is available to buy as a standalone or VST3 plug-in for macOS (10.13 or later) and Windows (10 or later) at a 33% launch discount — duly rising thereafter to its full price of $89.00 USD (excluding tax)/€76.00 EUR (including tax)/£68.00 GBP (including tax) — directly from PolyFreq here: https://www.polyfreq.com/products

SEQUENTIAL FOURM: 4 voces analógicas para recrear un clásico

video upload by Hispasonic

Click CC for subtitles at the bottom of the player once the video starts.

Video descpription in Googlish:

Instead of a traditional review of the Sequential Fourm, we decided to take a different approach: putting it to work on a specific track. And not just any track: "Fade to Grey" by Visage—an absolute classic of 1980s British synth-pop. Every melodic and accompanying track you’re about to hear was created exclusively using the Fourm, starting from factory sounds (drawn from the approximately 300 initial presets) with only minimal tweaks. The only element not provided by the synth is the drums: an AI-generated Roland CR-78-style pattern, occasionally reinforced with a kick and snare from Logic’s sound library.

Along the way, Pablo demonstrates how to truly harness the power of a modern polyphonic analog synthesizer: polyphonic aftertouch (key for the lead vocal line, where some notes come alive while others fade out completely), intense mixer feedback (ranging from subtle thickening to nonlinear behavior with "ghost" harmonics), audio-rate filter modulation from Oscillator 2 (adding anything from brightness and vocal-like character to total sonic breakdown, depending on the intensity), glide for creating transition sweeps, and the LFO in random mode feeding the filter to ensure every note sounds unique.

We also cover specific recording techniques: layering basslines via MIDI using two different sounds and panning them; doubling hand-played pads so that the two takes aren't identical; and recording a MIDI pattern to free up both hands, allowing you to perform real-time timbral tweaks—adjusting the filter, resonance, and modulation intensity—during the actual audio recording.

📝 A quick refresher on the Fourm: a compact 4-voice analog synthesizer featuring two VCOs per voice, a 4-pole low-pass filter derived from the Prophet-5, one global LFO, two ADSR envelopes, a mixer with feedback capabilities, no internal effects, a mono output, a 37-key "slim" Tactive keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch, and a modulation matrix—inherited from the Pro-1—that is directly accessible right on the front panel. 00:00 Original vs. Fourm Version

Introducing Drum Farm by Knobula

video upload by knobula

Drum Farm is a Eurorack module dedicated to the cultivation and un-ethical treatment of drum sounds. It combines real-time drum synthesis, effect processes and sampling into a hands-on, multi-engine instrument, delivering up to four simultaneous voices and three effects at once."

Press release follows:

Knobula cultivates new ground in drum voice design with Drum Farm performance-focused Eurorack module

LONDON, UK: advanced modular synthesiser developer Knobula is poised to cultivate new ground with its upcoming Drum Farm Eurorack module — merging synthesis, sampling, and real-time effects into a single, hands-on instrument built for fast, intuitive sound design, empowering users to relentlessly sculpt, process, sample, and re-sample sounds grown from its wide range of virtual analogue and physically modelled drum and effects algorithms — readily representing the latest addition to its growing lineup of control-centric instruments embodying a no-screen, no-preset philosophy, as of April 21…

As an appropriate appellation, Drum Farm was inspired by Knobula Technical Director Jason Mayo’s background in computer animation, where vast ‘render farms’ generated thousands of realistic images with minimal human input; as a performance-focused Eurorack drum module occupying 24HP of rack space, it is organised into three core sections: a Drum Synth with 16 virtual analogue and physically modelled drum algorithms, an Effects engine offering 16 different realtime processes, and a digital Sampler with up to three playback voices — capturing the combined output of everything a creative user could conceivably do with it. By bringing all the essential building blocks together, Drum Farm allows for the creation of original sounds quickly and intuitively — whether shaping punchy kicks, layered snares, tuned percussion loops, cymbals, CV/Gate-controlled samples, or physically modelled drum membranes.

Moreover, Drum Farm’s onboard sampler can run automatically in the background, sampling into one of 16 sequential audio buffers. Ultimately, users can capture the drum synthesiser on its own or record hybrid combinations of synthesis, effects, and samples, which can themselves be resampled into richly layered percussion structures or loops. Additionally, an EXT (external) input opens the gate to the world of field recording or sampling directly from elsewhere in a Eurorack system and a row of CV and trigger inputs allows further influence to any assignable control, including the ability to switch samples, drum algorithms, or effect types on the fly.

Duly designed for fast, intuitive sound creation, Drum Farm positively encourages an immediate, iterative workflow — simply select a drum model, sculpt it, process it live through the effects, sample the result, blend it with another model, and repeat. As a result, complex and evolving sounds quickly emerge.

Embodying Knobula’s philosophy of promoting experimentation and tactile control reminiscent of classic real-world instruments, Drum Farm features no screens and no sub-menus. Instead, it is a performance-focused module that rewards hands-on exploration, invites happy accidents, and provides a fertile environment for sounds to flourish and grow.

It is possible to create fully hands-free generative patches, self-building sample libraries, or access to round-robin multi-samples since all controls are CV- or trigger-assignable via five CV/Gate inputs. Sensibly, sounds can be saved to a microSD card alongside a complete snapshot of the module itself, whereby buffers, knob positions, samples, and settings are stored together as a session — with up to 32 sessions per card — allowing users to return to their work, exactly where they left off. It is fair to say, therefore, that Drum Farm is always ready for both studio experimentation and live recall.

Thanks to Knobula cultivating new ground with Drum Synth, the relentless creation of drum parts in Eurorack has never been more immediate or rewarding. Attendees at London Synth & Pedal Expo 2026 may recognise the farm-themed product tease, with ‘alien cow abduction’ subsequently forming the core of Drum Farm’s promotional campaign video.

Shipping scheduled for June 2026, Drum Farm will be available to purchase — priced at £449.00 GBP (including VAT), with a choice of two faceplate colourways on offer — directly through the Knobula shop (https://www.knobula.com/shop), as well as via Knobula’s growing global network of resellers.

Dreamy Minimal Ambient with OP-1 field and norns shield | Warmth 2026-03-05 by atnr

video upload by atnr

"Ambient Engine (macOS)
https://store.atnr.net/downloads/ambi...

A piece created with ‪@teenageengineering‬ OP-1 field, ‪@KOMAelektronik‬ Field Kit, norns shield, NTS-1, and Ambient Engine. It is minimal ambient built from dreamy synth tones, distortion, and fragmented chorus textures.

On the OP-1 field, a 44 step phrase runs in a loop using the ENDLESS sequencer. The output is connected to. ‪@strymon‬ blueSky with reverb applied.

On the norns shield, Graintopia is launched and an electric piano sound from the CP-88 is recorded with phaser applied and processed with granular synthesis. The output runs through ‪@ChaseBlissAudio‬ LOSSY with EQ and reverb. In the outro, packet loss effect is used to create a lo fi texture while the sound fades out.

In the Field Kit, radio tuner audio is sent to the ‪@KORG_INC‬ NTS-1 where delay, chorus, and reverb are applied. The return signal is sent again to an AUX channel to create feedback and distortion.

In Ambient Engine, two voice samples are loaded and played with randomized playback ranges. Filter, MicroLoop, delay, and reverb are adjusted during playback."

Audio Damage Introduces Descent Granulator

via Audio Damage

"Descent is a granular delay and reverb effect that transforms your audio into evolving, otherworldly textures. At its core, Descent captures incoming audio and breaks it into tiny grains—anywhere from a handful to dozens at once—then scatters them across time and pitch to create everything from subtle thickening and rhythmic delays to vast, frozen soundscapes and shimmering pitch-shifted clouds. With independent control over grain count, duration, overlap, and direction (forward, reverse, or random), combined with extensive randomization for pitch, pan, position, amplitude, and timing, Descent turns any sound source into a living, breathing texture. Whether you're adding shimmer to guitars, creating infinite sustain on synth pads, or designing abstract sonic environments, Descent delivers studio-quality granular processing with an intuitive interface and real-time FFT visualization.

Features

Granular engine with adjustable grain count (1–50 simultaneous grains), duration, overlap, and envelope shape for precise texture control.
Pitch shifting from -24 to +24 semitones with pitch quantization—lock transpositions to specific intervals for harmonically-correct shimmer, fifths, octaves, or any chromatic combination.
Six-axis randomization: independently randomize pitch, pan, position, amplitude, duration, and grain count for everything from subtle movement to complete chaos.
Direction control plays grains forward, reverse, or randomly mixed—perfect for tape-style effects, reverse swells, and glitchy textures.
High-feedback mode with diffusion control transforms delays into lush, reverb-like washes that never get harsh or out of control.
Tempo-sync or free-running modes let you lock grain timing to your session or let textures evolve organically.
Real-time FFT visualization shows your granular cloud evolving, making sound design intuitive and immediate.
35 factory presets covering shimmers, delays, reverbs, pitch effects, and experimental sound design to get you started instantly.
Cross-platform preset manager with XML-based presets compatible across all plugin formats and operating systems.

Sound Design Ideas

Add subtle depth with a few long grains and minimal randomization. Create rhythmic delays with short, quantized grains at high feedback. Build infinite sustain pads by freezing audio with high grain count and overlap. Design glitchy textures with extreme randomization and reverse grains. Craft shimmer effects by quantizing pitch shifts to octaves and fifths. Transform vocals into ethereal textures with diffusion and wide panning."

Inner City/Big Fun (Circuit Rhythm Instrumental)

video upload by Guinan

"Written in 1987 and released in 1988 Inner City’s ‘Big Fun’ was one of the first big crossover hits for House music internationally. Composed with minimal equipment and featuring Paris Grey’s iconic vocal, it set the template for many imitators and subsequent hits.

In the interview below Kevin Saunderson states that all he wanted to create was a track that could be played at the Paradise Garage, the birthplace of House. Nearly 40 years later it can still fill a dancefloor.

Much of the essence of the track comes down to the sampled sounds used. I’ve tried as far as possible to use the original sound sources for my samples and have recreated a version that fits the track into the Circuit Rhythm. What you hear (on both the instrumental and vocal versions) is recreated entirely on the Rhythm and recorded direct from the audio outs. See below for more details."

Rare Gear Demo: The Johnson Intonation Trainer (1966)

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by Instrument Attic

via this eBay listing

"The 1966 Johnson Intonation Trainer is a rare and intriguing instrument developed by the E.F. Johnson Company of Waseca, Minnesota. Originally designed to assess pitch-matching and pitch-discrimination abilities, this device has garnered attention for its unique features and potential applications in modern music production.

One of the standout characteristics of the Johnson Intonation Trainer is its full polyphony, allowing all 37 keys to be played simultaneously. Each key is associated with its own oscillator, enabling microtonal adjustments and the exploration of unconventional scales and tunings. The instrument offers four distinct voicing options, ranging from basic sine waves to more complex, reedy tones. Additionally, the “Scale Selector” switch provides a choice between standard tempered tuning and a tunable mode, with individual “Tunable Scale Controls” corresponding to each note on the keyboard for precise pitch calibration.

Housed in a robust fiberglass case, the Intonation Trainer features a built-in speaker, though it can also be connected to external amplifiers or mixers via standard 1/4” outputs. Some units include a vibrato effect, though functionality may vary between models.

In contemporary settings, the Johnson Intonation Trainer has found a niche among experimental musicians and sound designers. Its ability to produce rich drones and facilitate microtonal exploration makes it a valuable tool for creating unique sonic textures. The instrument’s vintage analog circuitry imparts a distinctive warmth and character that is highly sought after in modern music production.

Due to limited production and the passage of time, functional units of the Johnson Intonation Trainer are exceedingly rare. Finding one in full working condition, complete with original documentation, is a remarkable discovery for collectors and enthusiasts alike. The scarcity of this instrument, combined with its unique capabilities, underscores its status as a treasured piece of audio history."

"Made in 1966 in Waseca, Minnesota by the E. F. Johnson Company. Originally designed as an ear training and intonation device, but in practice it is a unique fully polyphonic analog synthesizer with extensive tuning control. Very few were made, and surviving examples in this condition are vanishingly rare.

CubuSynth Introduces ARKARION Eurorack Analog Synthesizer Voice

video upload by CubuSynth Modular

"The ARKARION is a complete analog synthesizer voice, housed in a Eurorack module, with digitally controlled signal routing. It combines the tactile experience of analog patching with the generative potential of randomized patches, all controlled via a single button or external gate signal.

Inspired by a fictional "DNA synthesis" concept, the ARKARION interprets a virtual genetic code to define routing schemes for CV and audio. This allows complex, evolving sound design with minimal patching.

This synthesizer is designed for users seeking a unique blend of structure and chaos, combining traditional subtractive synthesis elements with a digitally modulated signal flow. Whether played from a MIDI source, sequencer, or by hand, the ARKARION delivers a wide range of timbres, from tightly controlled tones to wild and unpredictable textures.
