Synth Stuff Ep. 92 - Modal Element One

video upload by tritonrecordings

"Fresh from Modal's oven is the Element One. I think the idea was to take their analog modeling engine and scale the programming side of things down for a sleeker interface, and instead focusing more on performance. Not a bad idea, and I can see this being useful in a live setting. The sound is great and covers a lot of ground beyond just analog emulation type sounds. It has some of the same UI quirks that irritate me about my Argon8X, but it's a great lightweight synth full of good sounds. I think Modal in general makes some underrated stuff, so check them out if you see one. The illuminated Modal logo does it for me too - I'm a sucker for that kind of thing..."

New Order, BBC2/Radio 1 simulcast ('Rock Around The Clock', August 28, 1984)

video upload by MrMartinPipe

Two Sequential Circuits Prophet-5s and two Octave Electronics Voyetra 8s. Emu Emulator there as well as custom trigger pads.

This one is in via Ivan Trajkovic aka deejayiwan.

Video description:

"Here we have - except for the three songs that YouTube has 'flagged up' for removal - the notoriously bad-tempered 'Saturday Live' set that was the legendary New Order's contribution to the BBC's 'Rock Around The Clock' music-marathon of pop videos, live performances and documentaries.
Some of the day's programming - notably, this New Order performance from the bowels of Broadcasting House - was simulcasted on the BBC's Radio 1/2 network, as there was no stereo TV in the UK back then.
This historic programme (New Order's "live radio debut on the telly", according to BBC presenter Richard Skinner) surfaced on an old V2000 tape that was being chucked out (together with the video recorder it was in). V2000 was an unusual (but at the time, technically-advanced) European home-video format, intended to compete with VHS and Betamax. Developed by Philips and Grundig, the now-forgotten V2000 had some cool features - like 'flip over' recording, and noise-free 'trick' playback. Don't laugh - this was a big deal in the early-mid 1980s!
The recording was alas in a very poor state - machine (which needed to be repaired) and tape alike had evidently not been stored carefully. I have cleaned up the visuals as best I can - and the result is not bad, considering that the source material is over 40 years old! Better still, I had the cassette recording of the stereo FM broadcast I made at the time - which I have managed to synchronise to the video.
I have it on good authority that the result is superior to what the BBC holds in its archives (allegedly a ropey off-air VHS copy, with hissy mono sound).

Erica Synths Syntrx II Review and Demo // Not just for Bleeps, Fizzes and Ambient Soundscapes

video upload by Starsky Carr

"The Erica Synths Syntrx II is one of the most talked-about synthesizers of recent years — but three years on from its release, is it still worth your money? In this in-depth review and demo, I finally get hands-on with this modern spiritual successor to the legendary EMS VCS3 and EMS Synthi, and I want to bust two big myths: it's NOT as complicated as it looks, and it's NOT just a crazy sci-fi sound effects machine.
🎹 What's covered in this video:

-Syntrx II vs the original EMS VCS3 / EMS Synthi — key similarities and differences
-Syntrx II vs Syntrx I — what changed and why
-The 16x16 digital pin matrix explained simply
-Using the Syntrx II as a standard 3-oscillator monosynth
-The trapezoid (looping) envelope in practice
-All-analog signal path walkthrough
-Onboard 3-channel sequencer, DSP reverb and delay, envelope follower
FM, self-oscillation, noise modulation, and filter techniques
-Sample & hold circuit — how to set it up
-The joystick as an LFO / recording modulation source
-MIDI setup tips (offset fix, CC assignments for X and Y axes)
-Patch saving — what it DOES and DOESN'T save, and why it matters
-Honest pros and cons

🎵 Extended drone demo — 5 minutes of the Syntrx II running a single live patch with the trapezoid looping envelope, FM, noise, filter modulation via joystick, and DSP effects. The full version was over 10 minutes — it really is that good.

💷 Price context: Original EMS Synthis now sell for £24,000+. The Syntrx II comes in under £2,000. If you've ever wanted that Synthi sound without selling a kidney, this might be your answer."

X1L3 - ALLEYKAT - DEV - NINE LIVES - NO REGRETS - module test build - swinsid - eurorack module

video upload by X1L3

The ALLEYKAT gets a front panel.

"First and flawed test build of the Alleykat module.
Nine lives - no regrets......

Completed the next schematic revision today ready for submission to fab. In doing so i ended up spending an hour on this flawed test piece knocking this up for a bit of fun.

When you consider how good it sounds (in a c64 kind of way) in it's current state, it becomes quite obvious how cool it will be when the filter is online and all the parameters are active. The test boards had numerous errors on them which have rendered the ring/sync and octave hopping inactive. The filter cutoff and resonance were also mis-routed in the schematic which rendered the filter unusable.

Swinsid in circuit this time. Does a decent enough job, but i've yet to see how it performs in comparison to a real SID or a superior clone when the ring/sync and filter come into play. The only difference i hear using just the waveforms and pwm compared to the usual 8580 i use for testing is that the swinsid doesn't sound as bright.

With a bit of luck i've fixed everything that was wrong with the first attempt and the next revision will work properly."

A Rare First Listen: Four Classic Oberheims

video upload by Jose's Vintage Keys

"I was lucky enough to borrow three beautiful vintage Oberheims from a good friend. Together with my own OB-X, that gave me the rare chance to put four classic Oberheim polys side by side: the OB-X, OB-Xa, OB-8 and EVS.

This is not a polished shootout or a scientific comparison. It is simply a first impression, a first test after the synths came back from major servicing. Just playing, listening and enjoying that unmistakable Oberheim sound.

Huge thanks to my friend for trusting me with these incredible instruments. I’m a lucky man.

Genki Instruments Katla #5 | Winterdagen

video upload by Winterdagen

"Time for a new video on the mighty Genki Instruments Katla lava synthesizer! While last rays of a setting sun were hitting my living room window, I was playing around with Katla's stereo CMOS distortion, and this beautiful gloomy pad emerged. You can drive Katla in no less than four different places. This took a little getting used to for me, but it makes for a super flexible synth engine. I've never heard internal drive sound this good on a synthesizer.

As always, thanks for having me Genki! I'm not getting payed to say nice things about Katla, and I think its beautiful sound speaks for itself:)"

Plinky 12 and Plinky v3

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"This video clip is a duet using a Plinky each from both generations: a Plinky 12 Chords providing glissandi and harmonies, and the original Plinky v3 from Thonk providing the main melody.

Enrica, engineer and musician of Düsseldorf-based synth maker Making Sound Machines, plays the original Plinky v3, with long melodic arcs and the characteristic melancholic sound at the touch of her fingertips.

Roland slides his fingertips along the rainbow coloured columns of Plinky 12 in Chordnotes view. The notes in this view are a stack of the chord notes for each of the harmonies from the chord palette at the bottom of the instrument.

This allows him to freely arpeggiate and transition from harmony to harmony. After the intro of the piece, Roland starts a harmonic sequence on Plinky 12 to accompany the notes Enrica plays on the original Plinky.

The lead synth in the beginning and throughout is captured directly from Plinky v3. All additional synth sounds and effects, the harp-like sound and glissandy in the accompaniment, are produced with Plinky 12's on-board synth engine.

Plinky 12 is a family of expressive polyphonic synthesizers. The three instruments are built around a shared polyphonic synth engine. Designed by mmalex, it evokes the unmistakable melancholic sounds of the original Plinky.

Each instrument is designed in collaboration with a different synth maker, lending each panel a distinct playability and unique character.

Plinky 12 Chords is a harmonic inspiration machine. It lets you improvise melodies and chords, with expressive control over voicings, progressions, and immediate musical play. Created by Making Sound Machines, Chords is the panel for finding beautiful harmonic movement quickly.

Plinky 12 Toadstep is a 4-track step sequencer built for super funky riffs, experimental self-generative melodies, and good ol' Acid. Created by Toadstool Tech, the designer behind the Ectocore Eurorack module, Toadstep is fun, immediate and easy to jam with!

Plinky 12 Blocks is an open panel built for experimentation, with monome-grid compatibility, Plinky style touch synthesis, and a browser-based coding environment just a click away. While it comes with a fully playable design out of the gate, creator mmalex invites you to build your own adventure with this panel. If you can imagine it, you can make it!"

Introducing Plinky 12 Blocks, Chords and Toadstep

video upload by Making Sound Machines

Additional videos below.

"We are super excited to introduce 3 new instruments today! Plinky 12 is a family of expressive polyphonic touch synthesizers. The three instruments are built around a shared synth engine. Designed by mmalex, it evokes the unmistakable melancholic sounds of the original Plinky. https://plinky12.com

While it comes with a fully playable design out of the gate, creator mmalex invites you to build your own adventure with this panel. If you can imagine it, you can make it!

In this video, Enrica and Roland from Making Sound Machines explore the three new Plinky 12 instruments: Blocks, Chords and Toadstep from left to right.

The track builds on a repeating loop created with the built-in sequencer on Plinky 12 Toadstep. The short sequence uses rhythmic step repeats, track step length and animated synth parameters to create an ostinato that keeps sonically evolving over the length of the track.

As the piece continues, Roland plays a progression of harmonies from the rainbow chord palette on Plinky 12 Chords, before launching a sequence that reharmonizes the loop heard from Toadstep. Enrica joins in playing sparkling arpeggios with her fingertips on Plinky 12 Blocks, the surface with the sunset colour-fade print.

As the track progresses, Roland plays a melodic line on Chords, then Enrica takes over with a melody on blocks. The Plinky 12 polyphonic play surface reads both play position and pressure of the touch. It enables bends and glides on the horizontal axis, while allowing for discrete arps in the vertical direction.

They end the piece with a tempo transition showcasing the septuplet feature on the internal sequencer."

Animal Factory Dirty Mirror × Korg Monologue // Fuzz Synth Jam (No Talking)

video upload by Animal Factory Amplification

"Use headphones for this one! Animal Factory Dirty Mirror dual parallel fuzz pedal running a Korg Monologue analog synth — no talking, no post-processing, just raw tone. This was recorded in one take to bring out how the Dirty Mirror becomes an instrument in itself.

A love letter to shoegaze, noise, and harsh textures, the Dirty Mirror pairs a modified Shin-Ei Superfuzz (the "Burn" channel) with a heavily modded Big Muff Pi (the "Churn" channel), plus a pre-fuzz delay modulated by an internal LFO and envelope follower. Hand-built in Mumbai by Animal Factory Amplification and debuted at Superbooth 2025.

Here it's sculpting the Korg Monologue's aggressive analog voice into fuzzscapes, drones, seasick vibrato, and pitch-shifted square-wave chaos. Recorded dry — no EQ, no reverb, nothing but the pedal and the synth. Drums from an MFB Tanzmaus (not processed)

Animal Factory Dirty Mirror Fuzz on MFB Tanzmaus | Dual Distortion Delay Jam

video upload by Animal Factory Amplification

"Use headphones or speakers with good bass! Dual fuzz chaos meets beat-driven synthesis! Watch the Animal Factory Dirty Mirror transform the MFB Tanzmaus drum machine with creative distortion and delay manipulation. This is pure experimentation—no tutorial, just sonic exploration.

Gear featured:
Animal Factory Dirty Mirror Dual Fuzz Pedal
MFB Tanzmaus Drum Machine

Not just a shoegaze and noise rock machine - the Dirty Mirror is the perfect fuzz for musicians exploring wall-of-fuzz sounds, experimental synthesis, drum machine effects processing, and unconventional gear combinations."

"The Dirty Mirror takes these two behemoths of sonic perversion and adds an extra layer of nasty – using the core circuit of our Coma Reactor Eurorack module.

This three footswitch, 15 knob pedal looks complicated – but it’s not:

The BURN Channel (left side) is based on our Chemical Burn circuit, a nastier FY-6 variant.

The CHURN channel (right side) is based on a heavily modded Big Muff Pi.

There is a short delay circuit before the fuzz circuits.

Both the fuzz circuits can switch between the input sound, 100% wet delayed sound or a blend of wet and dry.

The fuzz circuits are then mixed in parallel into a high-headroom output section.

For added sickness, the delay time can be modified by an envelope follower or LFO.

Choose your filthy reflection – from straight dual parallel fuzz textures, to seasick vibrato to long slow quasi-chorus phasey apocalyptica.

The delay can be used on its own for slapback, chorus and vibrato effects.

Yes, it can get very noisy.
No, you can’t do anything about it - so weep in pain and pleasure, and submit to the swarms of square waves that joyfully fill your room."

SynthFest 2018 - Synclavier History by Jean-Bernard Emond

video upload by SynthFest France

This one is in via Jean-Bernard Emond. Click CC at the bottom of the player for subtitles. This is an older video from 2018 but still interesting. This is also a good reminder that SynthFest France 2026 is happening this weekend: https://www.synthfestfrance.com.

"I invite you to revisit my short 2018 talk (33 minutes), still relevant today, on the history of digital synthesis—specifically FM synthesis. It covers everything from the NED Synclavier to Yamaha’s FM machines, and ends with the audio engines from the Hal Alles family tree (ATT Bell Labs), starting with the Alles Synth, then the Crumar GDS, and finally the DKI Synergy."

Mos-lab Main cabinet (Emu modular)

video upload by MOS-LAB

"Here’s a quick demo of my MOS-LAB EMU modular main cabinet driven by the Tangram Sequencer.

Apologies for the image quality — the room is quite dark, and filming aluminum panels is always tricky due to light reflections on the surface, which makes it hard to capture them properly on camera.

Still, you’ll get a good idea of the sound and workflow. More videos (with better lighting!) coming soon.

Enjoy!

"It is back, with a totally new design, more powerful than ever! The Mask1EX is a desktop synthesizer that you can use with your keyboard, DAW, sequencer or any other gear with MIDI. Like other Mask synths, it is based on our exclusive Bitmask synthesis technology which generates up to 512 different waveforms for oscillators. It offers 14-voice polyphony with two Bitmask oscillators per voice and 2x2 parts of multi-timbrality (two parts of single or dual layered voices). Each part comes with stereo effects to make the sound warm and rich, plus a master effect with delays and reverbs. Like the Mask1 keyboard, the Mask1EX MK2 offers an incredible playing experience with its dynamic articulation system.
