"We went inside the Frap Tools booth at the Berlin Superbooth to explore the Magnolia, a polyphonic synthesizer that has caught everyone's attention.

Magnolia stands out for its unique architecture, with two oscillators that break with convention: a through-zero oscillator that allows analog linear FM, evoking the classic timbres of Yamaha's FM synthesizers, but in a 100% analog format. It also features a more traditional oscillator with octave controls, variable waveform and a wave folder to add richness and timbral complexity. Want metallic sounds or subtractive textures? Magnolia dares to do both.

This synth also impresses with its polyphony and bithermality, allowing everything from dense sounds in dual mode to splits and morphing between presets. Each voice features two independent filters (low pass and high pass), extensive modulations with synchronizable LFOs, dedicated envelopes and an effects stage that includes analog distortion and digital slots for delays and modulations (still under development), as well as a built-in sequencer and expressive controls such as aftertouch, expression pedals and modulatable panning.

"THE PPG STORY
In 1975, Wolfgang Palm made synthesizer history with the PPG 1002. An early prototype featured retractable patch cables, but in the final production model, these were replaced with rotary switches for more versatile modulation. A key advantage of the 1002 over its competitors was its temperature-compensated VCO circuit, now further refined in this reissue, preserving its iconic sound.

The PPG 1020 (1977) introduced digital oscillators, paving the way for the 360 Wavecomputer in 1979, which marked the beginning of wavetable synthesis. This was followed by milestones such as the PPG Wave 2.3 (1984) with MIDI and the PPG Waveterm B (1985).

After PPG was dissolved in 1987, Wolfgang Palm collaborated with Steinberg and later co-developed the Waldorf Microwave (1989). In the 2000s, he released software synthesizers under his own name, including the PPG Wavegenerator, Wavemapper, Infinite Pro, and Phonem. In 2020, Palm transferred the PPG technologies to Brainworx, which became part of Native Instruments in 2023.

At the same time, Cornel Hecht, part of the PPG team since 2012, reviewed Wolfgang Palm’s original handwritten schematics of the PPG 1002. His mission: to faithfully bring the analog circuitry of 1975 into the present. The first prototype impressed Native Instruments, laying the foundation for this exclusive reissue.
Wolfgang Palm: "What's labeled PPG should also be PPG inside! That was and still is my motto. The new edition of the PPG 1002 is based on the original PPG circuitry."

But this reissue is more than just a synthesizer, it’s a fusion of technology and ecological responsibility. "Beautiful 50 year old Moog that can do things no other Moog can do. It's the only Duophonic Moog! You can set one osc as low note and one to high note for duophonic playing, set it as a mono synth, or even change the scaling of the high osc for microtonal playing. This Moog has the same oscillators and filter as the Minimoog Model D but instead of the Mini's third osc that doubles as it's only lfo, the S6 has TWO dedicated LFOs that can have separate wave shapes and rates and can be modulated by the eg! Modulation craziness. This Moog also has TWO amps! One signal goes through the filter, as usual, but there is a second amp that bipasses the filter. This means you can have a high resonance sweeping filter sound going (which kills all low end on every Moog) but you can beef it back up with the dry out amp. I've had most Moogs and think this is by far the best and most powerful Moog. I passed on a Minimoog for only 3k years ago and sold my Multimoog when I got my first S6. Everything works. Tuning and scaling was just adjusted and it's working great. I barely play it and have some studio changes in mind so it's on the chopping block. Sold as-is. No returns and I am not responsible for any guts getting shaken during shipping. It's 50 years old and it's in excellent shape for that age. Tuning and calibration info can be found online if you need it after shipping. Also considering selling the Polymoog 203a seen in the photos which is also fully functional and includes the rare Polypedals. A little demo video of the two can be seen in the link. The S6 tune drift in the video is actually a slow LFO and not just drifting. Also the video was done before I tweaked the scaling pots inside."

The SILHOUETTE SPORT is an innovative audiovisual synthesizer that transforms visuals and motion to sound and rhythm. The interdisciplinary approach liberates the inherent connection between various senses and actions like seeing, moving and listening. To play along these intersections wakes basic intuitions and leads to a widespread field of cross-sensual beauty, poetry and joy.

The SPORT has a camera on board, and it is portable: Ready to search and find visuals in the outside world to play with - dance like. It can also load picture and movie files. RYK Algo: a digital four operators FM module, eight algorithms , for harsh to smooth melodies. And you can easily use it as a simple four voice module, ideal for chords. Wave folding and shaping inside. Very versatile.

Westlich Performer: Eight tracks CV/ gates with interesting CV modulation sequences, euclidean mode. My choice if I would have only one sequencer. And midi capacities too.

LXR Drum : Digital, yes, but a good way to learn the basics of drum sound synthesis with subtractive and FM synthesis. It can to everything if you need percussion acoustic of digital drums. Seven voices too.

This setup can do almost every style of music.

Perfect working, exceptional deign. Inside is intact, top build quality, each pcb in its slot.. clean, incredibly like new! The five panel lamps are still the originals. Sound is special, awesome vco's and filters, A.M. Synthesis (left side on the bottom panel) is unique and a special feature that offer a sort of additional Harmonic Generators.. It's so incredible that in the late 70s such a high-performance synthesizer was conceived. Working voltage 220 volts, standard european voltage.

ContinuuCon 2025 Set for Paris, IRCAM - March 26–28

ContinuuCon Electronic Music Conference Scheduled for Paris, IRCAM

ContinuuCon 2025, the seventh international Haken Continuum Conference, is returning to France in March 26–28. This year’s event will take place in Paris, and will be hosted by the IRCAM Forum. It will be fully integrated in the IRCAM event with a room dedicated to ContinuuCon every morning.

Musicians, sound designers, software developers, and music enthusiasts are invited to explore the world’s most uniquely expressive electronic musical instruments through presentations, performances, and hands-on experiences. As always, ContinuuCon will focus on every instrument that features the Haken Continuum’s internal sound engine the EaganMatrix, including the Continuum Fingerboard, ContinuuMini, EaganMatrix Module for Eurorack, and Expressive E Osmose synthesizer.

ContinuuCon 2025 will also include a ContinuuCon Dinner (date still to be defined). Over these 3 days, Continuum inventor and EaganMatrix developers Lippold Haken, Edmund Eagan and Christophe Duquesne will join other authorities and some of the world’s most skilful Continuum players to share their expertise and technical knowledge. The integration in the IRCAM Forum will allow attendees to also benefit all the other conferences of the Forum to discover or go into IRCAM ‘s sonic research world in depth.

Haken Continuum players include film composer A.R. Rahman (who participated in last year’s ContinuuCon), Nine Inch Nail’s Trent Reznor, and The Who’s Pete Townshend, who said, “I absolutely adore it. The Continuum is already inspiring me to new ideas.” You may also hear the Continuum featured in the scores to Game of Thrones, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, and the recent Dune: Part Two.

"I offer from my collection a very nice example of rare Yamaha GS2. The first commercially available FM synthesizer of the brand, a bit differently built synthesis than its successors (for example, separate parameter settings for each 4 adjacent keys, so splits are possible, etc.). Very analogue, distinctive sound, a joy to play. This is also helped by the perfect wooden keyboard with relatively fast response. The instrument is fully functional with all accessories - pedals, cover/legs, original sound bank on magnetic labels (22 labels). GS2 is fitted with Synthark's sound ROM, it has 128 sounds from Yamaha Library 1 and 2, the individual banks are switched by a rotary switch instead of the Store button next to the label reader (which is internally disconnected, either the ROM or the reader can work, not at the same time) so access to the sounds is instantaneous. But can be switched back to the reader at any time. The instrument is really heavy (~80kg), it is located in Prague, but I can personally deliver upon agreement within DE, NL, BE, A, or we can work out some shipping."
