Analog Systems RS110 Multimode Filter Module

No title link. Just this shot via this auction.

Details:
"The pioneers of synthesis understood that the flexibility with which a signal could be routed through filters was one of the most important elements of a synthesiser. Their modular synths featured four different types of filter: high pass filters which remove low frequencies (thus making a sound thinner), low pass filters (often used to emulate natural sounds) and band pass and band reject (notch) filters for resonant and special effects. These filters determined the power and the sound of the instrument.

In the early 1970s the Minimoog and the ARP Odyssey defined the architecture of integrated monosynths, and the rest of the synthesiser world was to follow their lead for more than a decade. The Minimoog provided just a single low-pass filter, while the Odyssey offered a simple high-pass filter in addition to its low-pass filter (but this was neither resonant nor voltage controlled). As a result, large modular synthesisers remained far more flexible than their smaller brethren.

This situation persisted until the 1990s when multimode filters reappeared on some of the newer digitally modelled synthesisers such as the Korg Prophecy. Unfortunately, and in common with all its brethren, the Prophecy is incapable of handling signals from the outside world. This is because the filter circuits do not exist: they are modelled mathematically, and form part of the complex calculations used to generate the analogue simulation. In contrast, the RS110 is a true analogue multimode filter. It is built from discrete components, and it eschews the use of the filter chips used by other manufacturers of analogue synthesisers. This means that the RS110 has a unique character that sets it apart from the crowd

IN USE
The RS110 consists of a two channel audio mixer followed by four, parallel, resonant filters with voltage controlled frequency and a unique "insert" point in the feedback path that generates and controls resonance.

Filter Modes
The RS110 offers four filter modes. These are 24dB/oct low-pass, 24dB/oct high-pass, 12dB/oct band-pass and 12dB/oct band reject (often called 'notch') filtering, with the cutoff frequencies (Fc) of the high-pass and low-pass outputs being the centre frequencies of the band-pass and notch outputs. Each of these filter characteristics is described in appendix 2.

There is no switch to select between the modes because all four are available simultaneously from the appropriate output sockets. However, the cut-off and resonance can not be defined individually for each, and the controls act upon each mode equally."

Hartmann Neuron

Click here for images via this auction.

Details (apparently pulled from the Hartmann site which is still up, btw):
"Neuron's synthesis engine is powered by the technology found in neural networks (for more on this, see the section "Neural Networks"). It uses models as the basis for sound generation. In conceptual terms, these models are comparable to samples, and they are derived by analyzing audio samples. This means that in principle, any auditory event can provide the raw material for creating and processing sound in Neuron. It ships with some 100 of these models on its internal hard disk. Though this is a huge store of sound design resources, you are free to analyze audio resources (samples) of your own, using our proprietary ModelMaker software, and archive them in the form of user models. These models contain the actual sound as well as the parameter sets that were captured during neural analysis. Parameter sets are subdivided in up to three levels, and they may be manipulated via the resynators' sticks. That makes Neuron the first synthesizer offering dynamic parameter assignment tailored specifically to the sound that you select for processing. "

Sequential Circuits Drumtraks

Title link takes you to shots pulled via this auction.
Details:
"Thirteen drum sounds all with programmable tuning and level control. Extensive editing with copy and paste ability. There's even a mixer section for individual sounds, six individual outputs, one mono mix output, and cassette in/out for offline memory storage. Pretty basic and easy programming, record a couple patterns and link them into a song. The DrumTraks can send Roland sync/clock to control a TB-303, TR-909, TR-808 or TR-606. It is also fully MIDI capable and syncable. This makes it very easy to use with old analogs and new MIDI synths and sequencers."

MPC 500 Review on SIGHUP

"Akai seems to have ignored the synth side of samplers with the MPC500 (and possibly this extends across the MPC line), which is a little unfortunate. At the very least for OS updates, I hope they enhance the filter with highpass and bandpass modes, and possibly some modulators (for which there are at least some alternatives with the Q-Link slider). On the Q-link slider, it seems a shame that it can only be mapped to pitch, filter cutoff and volume. Be nice to at least be able to map to start/end points of a sample, to do some glitch cut-up stuff. Which is a concern that crops up all over this thing -- the designers have trimmed out anything that might lend itself to making music differently, i.e. not in the hip hop/dance loop/phrase kind of way."

A MIDIbox SID is born!

YouTube via d0pefish. Title link takes you to more info on C64Music!

"The MIDIbox SID has been designed to get sounds out of the SID which cannot be achieved with other solutions. In difference to programs that are running on the C64 like the Triad MIDIslave, AnyWare M64 or the Prophet64, MIDIbox SID features more software implemented high-resolution modulation sources (LFOs, EGs), independent sound engines for all 3 voices and a low-latency MIDI interface (no note drops...)"

via this auction

Details:

"This is the awesome Yamaha PTX8
It is basically a FM tone generator [Update via Loscha: "The sound engine isn't FM, it's 12 bit pcm samples, with envelopes and pitch and such, no filters."] that is completely editable and changeable. It has many kits and hundreds of sounds included from the totaly 80's drums sounds to sweet analog sounds. All sounds are completely customisable
The great this about this unit though is the fact that you can use it as a Trigger to MIDI converter. Using triger pads or mic signals you can actually convert live playing on the drums into MIDI information for sequencing or triggering events in Abelton Live etc
It has 8 trigger inputs and 8 audio outputs.
If you are looking for a flexible drum trigger brain that has a hure load of sounds included with it this is for you

It comes included with 2 cartrages. One with extra wave forms and another with extra storage for sounds and banks."

Ad Infinitum - UM406

Title link takes you to Ad Infinitum, makers of the UM406. Shot and details via this auction.

Details:
"The UM406, "Utilis Multis IV-VI", is six four-way multiples with 3.5mm jacks in a standard dual-width Frac-Rak module.

Very Handy!

In an analog modular synthesizer, multiples are used to route an audio or control-voltage output signal to more than one input destinatation.

The UM406 has three groups of two multiples, each group having a normally closed connection between the two 'mults', such that each group can function as a seven-way multiple when the leftmost jack on the lower row is left unpopulated. When the leftmost jack on the lower row is populated, the group acts as two independent four-way multiples.

This module is not RoHS compliant and does not fit a Blacet rack frame.

Please visit the adinfinitummusic website at alexiles.com for more options and to see more of our products."

ARP Slider Caps

"The early ARP synthesizers had multicolored plastic caps on their sliders. These caps were originally intended for mini toggle switches, but can be used on the sliders with a little coaxing. You can still get these from Mouser Electronics. They are made by Mountain Switch, and the Mouser part number is the same as the Mountain Switch part number."

Roland Teaser

Roland Teaser for 1/18/07, NAMM, is up. Title link takes you to it on the Roland home page. There are three flashes of what looks like the hardware. I grabbed two but couldn't get the last.
Update: you can see some more stills in this HC thread. The last shot I tried to grab was a slider. Also someone suggested it looks like the coming MV-8800 with color screen, which makes sense as the video states the revolution will not be in black & white.

Europa Upgrade - Roland Jupiter 6

J saw the "jupiter guts" post and it got him thinking about the Europa upgrade. He did a quick search on my site and noticed I didn't put up a post on it yet. He's right! It's been out since before I started the blog and I haven't come across a reason to post it yet. So... If you haven't checked it out yet, do it. In short it a major update to the Jupiter 6 adding additional arpeggiator modes, MIDI CC for all sliders and knobs, and a whole lot more.
