MOOG Sonic 6

Title link takes you to shots via this auction. Not the best, but you don't see these too often.

"I didn't realize when I got it that most of the first video game sounds were made with this synth, but you can definitely tell after playing around with it for a while. The thing I like most about this synth is the fact that you don't have to have it plugged into an amp to hear it. It has 3 built in speakers that can even take the fat low unmistakable Moog sounds.

The Moog Sonic Six is a 2-VCO duophonic synthesizer with a built-in speaker and a 4-octave, 49-note (C-C) keyboard. Each VCO can output sawtooth, triangle, and rectangle (pulse/square) waveforms as well as 2 "waveform generators." A "quality" knob adjusts the width of the rectangular waveform. White or pink noise is also available. The Sonic Six can be set for 3 keyboard modes; high note priority, low note priority, or duophonic. The Sonic Six can also be set to an alternate tuning across the keyboard (different interval between octaves of the keyboard). Portamento rate is controlled by a knob. The envelope section features a basic envelope, with variable control for attack and decay and a switchable release (follows decay) and sustain. It had a single VCF, low-pass voltage controlled filter. Two multimode LFOs are available. Their speed is independently variable and can be controlled by the envelope."

"Visit umop.com/parallax.htm for more music!
Here's another total and complete electro-bastardization of an American classic. This time I run "Devil Went Down to Georgia" thru the techno/prog wringer, with sincere apologies to Charlie Daniels. No vocals in this video, although eventually when I semi-formally record it I'll potentially add some vocoded bullshit (and hopefully leave out some of the flubs, too). For now you can hear it in its current state of already-too-stupidness!"

"MFB SEQ-01 triggering 2 LFO resets and 3 envelope generators. its being clocked off a PlanB Model-28 Tapper, then the SEQ-01 is sending LFO resets on two tracks and trigger envelope generators on 3 other tracks. thats it, no other modification sources. a Doepfer A-110 oscillator patched into an A-137 wave multiplier which runs into an A-105 SSM filter and finally to a PlanB Model-13."

George Harrison's Electronic Sound

I'm finally getting around to reading Analog Days, The Invention and Impact of The MOOG Synthesizer. I just read about George Harrison's solo project, Electronic Sound which featured the MOOG Modular synthesizer. I read about the cartoon version of the modular on the album cover and decided to look it up. Here it. You can find a couple more shots on this site.

Recording info:
Side 1: "February 1969 - Recorded at Esher in Merrie England with the assistance of Rupert and Jostick, The Siamese Twins. George - Moog Synthesiser"

Side 2: "November 1968 - Recorded in California with the assistance of Bernie Krause. George - Moog Synthesiser" Amazon links for each: Electronic SoundAnalog Days

Dave Smith on Keyboard TV

Title link takes you to the vids. When you get there, click on "NEW! Dave Smith" on the left. The Prophet '08 is covered.

Update: Dave Smith and the Prophet '08 is also featured in this month's Keyboard Magazine. It's worth a read although they imply the Prophet-5 was the first completely programmable polyphonic synth. Doh! See if you can name the synths with polyphony before the Prophet-5. The Prophet-5 was the first at something related though.

Amdek PCK-100 Percussion Synthesizer

Title link takes you to shots via this auction.
"The Amdek PCK-100 has been likened to the Boss PC-2 Percussion Synthesiser and looking at pictures of the PC-2 it would appear to be identical in terms of controls at least and even down the the choice of font! Hmmmmmm. I have read that Amdek was the user-kit division of Boss. However, I have to say I have never done a side by side comparison of the PC-2 and PCK-100 so cannot say here that they are identical in sound characteristics. However I can say that this unit is capable of creating some of the deepest BOOOOMs I have ever heard from any piece of kit. It is also capable of creating some very odd off-the-wall synth percussion sounds as wel as more traditional synth drum sounds and all using true analogue circuity. This is proper cool, no messing.

Included in this auction are the original assembly instructions / user manual, which present detailed instructions for modifications to the circuit to add extra oscillator waveforms or additional modulation possibilities. This unit has NOT been modified so if you are so inclined you can bend it either using the suggested modifications or by going off piste in true circuit bending style."

take care!"

TENORI-ON In Development Flick Set and Initial Pricing

Title link takes you to the Flickr set. It also looks like the price for the first run will be GBP 599 with free shipping, and will be a limited run in the UK. A straight conversion to USD would be approximately 1,200. The main production run should of course be less. Hopefully they will adjust the price down to something much more reasonable in the US. The unit will also run on double A batteries so one less wire to worry about.

Synare PS-3

Title link takes you to shots via this auction.
The Synare 3 percussion pad is dynamic and level dependent. There are two oscillators. Oscillator one can produce noise or an adjustable pitch. Oscillator two can generate an LFO (called SLO on the unit) or an adjustable pitch. Either oscillator can be turned off if single oscillator operation is desired. There is a filter on the unit as well, with the following controls: Tune (filter frequency), Oscillator 2 level, Sweep, Resonance, and Decay. The final amplifier section has Volume and Decay time controls. The resonance in the filter section can be turned up to get self oscillation.

FEATURES:
DYNAMIC CONTROL - The Synare 3 will act and respond like any mechanical drum. If you hit it harder, the sound gets louder. A softer strike will yield a softer sound. This dynamic action can also be applied to work other ways as well. The harder you hit it, the higher the pitch will shoot, or the brighter the sound gets. Perfect for accents.

SELF-CONTAINED - The Synare 3 is totally self-contained. No extra boxes, control panels or complicated wires or patch cords to worry about. Everything is in the drum, even the power supply.

BATTERY OPERATED - The Synare 3 is powered by two 9-volt batteries. No need to string extension cords or worry about AC. With a set of headphones or a small battery-powered amp, you can play your Synare 3 anywhere.

METAL HOUSING - The Synare 3 is housed in an all-metal shell. No need to worry about breaking or cracking the case. The Synare 3 is built to take it.

CONTROLS:
Oscillator 1 - Pitch Source
TUNE: controls pitch of Oscillator in OSC 1 position
OFF: no function
NOISE: white noise source
OSC 1: turns on Oscillator pitch
Oscillator 2 - Pitch source and controller
TUNE: controls pitch of oscillator in OSC 2 position or speed of LFO in SLO position
OFF: no function
SLO: makes oscillator an LFO controller
OSC 2: turns on oscillator pitch (or higher speed LFO)
Filter - Sound modifier or source
TUNE: controls sound quality of an oscillator or tune (pitch) of the filter
OSC 2: controls how much LFO (Oscillator 2) affects the filter
SWEEP: determines how much pitch drop the Tune of the Filter will have
RES: controls sound quality of an oscillator or turns the Filter into a sound source
DECAY: determines how long it takes for the Sweep to effect the Tune of the Filter
Amplifier - Controls how the output will sound
DECAY: determines how long the sound will take to die out
VOL: controls the volume of the output"
