EVI Serge by vgermuse Part 3

YouTube via matrixsynth, via Todd Barton, aka vgermuse:
"at the request of many folks on and off line, I have put together a 6 minute piece using just the EVI1000/EWV2000 analog synth. This features sounds I created for my work with Anthony Braxton and the Northwest Creative Orchestra. Sometimes the sounds are sent through Moogerfooger Murf, Moogerfooger Ring Modulator, Boss RC-20 loop and some reverb. I recorded the track via the mixing board so things are pretty clean." You can grab the video and other demos off of vgermuse's website. Follow-up to this post.

Formanta UDS

images via this auction
"Formanta UDS fully analog electronic percussion synthesizer. Formanta UDS is soviet version of classic analog beat-box so as Roland TR and Simmons. Synth was prodused in 80-s years in USSR on the same military plant in Kachkanar where well known synth Polivoks was developed. This one was made for export from USSR i suppose, because it has main panel layout in english. Sound of UDS is very aggressive and "military". And it looks like the piece of soviet army gear - heavy, khaki colored and studded with knobs. It is very powerfull drum synth. You have 5 independent channels of drum sound synthesis. In every channel you can change: trigger signal sensitivity, base tone pitch, pitch envelope time, amount of pitch modulation, noise/tone ballance, filter's cutoff for noise, accent amount, channel's volume. Then we have additional channel for cymbal and hi-hat synth sounds. UDS has its own onboard drum sequencer with 16 different drum patterns. You can start sequencer, choose one from 16 patterns and change its temp by knob. You can switch every synthesis channel to its preset sound or switch it in "synthesis" mode and then control channel's parameters by 8 knobs. Also you can trig every channel by external trigger source - drum mashine, midi-cv converter, analog sequencer or electronic drum pad. On its top there are mono sum audio out and stereo audio out. All audio plugs in common jack standart. You can get many cool grooves just using its internal sequencer, not to mention external triggering.

Here is my audio demo of UDS. Synth was recorded from its stereo audio outs direct to PC without any additional effects and without multitracking.

Dr. Who Tardis for Your Bedroom

Some lucky 10 year old kid got this Dr. Who Tardis built for his bedroom. Anyone know more about this? I'm particularly curious if it makes any sound of course. Everything I've seen goes back to this anemic article on The Sun which doesn't reveal much.

It would definitely make for one hell of a synth.

genoQs BlackSea Brings New OS 1.40

"BlackSea does not only look uniquely exciting - it also brings us the the brand new OS 1.40!

Pre-installed on all BlackSea, and of course installable on all Octopus machines, OS 1.40 adds several features with focus on live play. The detailed list is provided in the release notes document.

The OS can be downloaded in the service->OS software area of our web site.

Some of our favorites:
- Step Length multiplier, to have steps play up to 8 full notes at normal track speed
- Increased resolution of the MIDI CC stream, with CC messages sent in-between steps
- Page EDIT mode - a toy in itself!
- Step selection stores, to quickly switch between groups of selected steps
- Step selection inverse editing - you just have to try this..

We are very proud of the new features and the new OS. The true merit is once again with our user community, whose engagement and commitment was once again one of our main sources of inspiration and energy in the creation process. Thank you for that!

Finally, we would like to wish you and your families a wonderful, peaceful Holiday Season, and are looking forward to the new year, which may bring you all the blessings from above and within.

Yours,
Marcel + Gabriel"

"Mochika Analog Sequencer Synth - Rhythm Synthesizer By Atomo Synthesizers
Visit my blog.

Make insane effect loops, cool phrases, fat basslines or crazy percusion rhythms, change the sound in real time by tweeking the knobs on stage or in studio or connect it to your favorite effects (delay, flange, etc, etc)and create a wide sort of rhytm textures and soundscapes with this beautiful lighted analog sequencer synth box.

Hi!! This auction is for a beautyful hand built Analog sequencer synthesizer created by Alfredo Aliaga for Atomo Labs.

This synth features one square and saw waveform VCO (voltage controled oscillator) with a huge pitch range, from subsonic to ultrasonic sound

One square and triangle waveform LFO (low frequency oscillator), that modulates the VCO for the vibrato effect creating old school arcade Atari-like sounds.

White noise generator that triggers the VCO and can create percussion like sounds.
8 step Sequencer with note on/off switch and pitch knob for each step

It features a 1/4 inch audio output, 1/4 inch CV Output (to control other analog gear), 1/4 inch Clock input (gate in, to sync whit an external analog clock, like another analog sequencer), 1/4 inch Gate/clock output.(to sync whit other analog gear using the Mochika's internal clock)

Also the instrument is ligthed with 2 super bright green leds that indicates the LFO and Sequencer Rate, and 8 blue ultra bright leds to indicate the step that is being played. Very useful when you play it on a dark stage.

The Analog Sequencer is packed in a cool cristal acrilic case that shows all the hand made analog circuitry.

The instrument is powered directly from 110V or 220V AC, rubber feet, and comes with operation manual.

Dimensions: 9 inch(W), 7 inch(D), 3 1/4 inch(H. incuded rubber feet and knobs)

Nora: The Sequel - Better than the original!

Remember Nora? YouTube via burnellyow. via swisstony.
"Features all-new footage and more duets. Better than the original! This is not a trick taught to Nora. She began sitting at the piano at about one-year-old. She's three now. She plays only when the mood strikes her, which is usually several time a times a day for short periods.

"The EVI 2000 analog synth module of the EVI 1000 is producing long sustained sine tones which are now and then sent through a Moogerfooger Ring Modulator. The EVI is triggering a patch in the Serge that is creating random pitches and drastic timbral shifts. Hope you enjoy."

Plan B returns in '08!

Via Peter Grenader of Plan B:

"We'll be showing a few new things, not as many as in previous years, but the line is more mature now and that's to be expected. We're hoping to have the new case, and two modules which I haven't decided to take them into production as of yet. It depends on the feedback received at the show:

The first is a super-quiet headphone pre which uses the infamous 5532 Opamp.

The other is this device called a Wave Splicer which lets you merge waveshapes together. It senses the zero-crossing of input A and let's you dial when the transition to the second input occurs, but always returns to the first input at the beginning of each wave cycle. You could have a saw going in one and a square from the same VCO in the other, and the splice setting would determine when in the single cycle it would switch between the two. This combo would allow for a saw you could PWM. Infinite combinations would make for some interesting timbres.

Two VCOs at different pitches is another that sounds great, especially sub-octs or two completely different squares as you can PWM the + and - sub-cycle independently of a single waveform. Again - once a wave begins, it will switch to a second input and then back to the first before the next cycle starts again. It will give the four output M15 six completely unique waveform combinations: sine/tri, sine/saw, sine/square, tri/saw, tri/square and saw/square.

The upside of doing it as a module as opposed to just adding that functionality into the VCO to begin with is some of these sound more interesting than others and as an outboard it gives you the potential to morph from other sources, not just the parent VCO.

Both the Headphone Pre and the Wave Splicer are 4HP.

have a Happy Happy, Merry New New!"

SynthLab for the XO - One Laptop Per Child Project

Remember TamTam? (click to check out the video) TamTam is a music suite similar to GarageBand for the OLPC XO. OLPC or One Laptop Per Child is a nonprofit organization that is trying to get laptops in the hands of children across the world, who could not afford one otherwise. You can read more about the program on the OLPC website. They are currently offering a buy one get one free up until Dec 31st, so if you are curious you can buy one for yourself and one will be sent out to a child.

What's interesting to synthheads is it will also feature a modular synth program called SynthLab. Think Native Instruments Reactor, the original Seer Systems Reality and other module based software synthesizers where you connect various components to create sound. SynthLab is "designed for older children who are ready to venture into more sophisticated sound design, SynthLab is a mini-lab for acoustic- and electronic-circuit construction." Pretty cool.

iPhone Synth

YouTube via scribemedia.
"It's very much like Propellerhead's ReBirth (remember that one?) and other step-sequencers. I tried to demonstrate how some of it works but my big sausage fingers +plus+ trying to face my MacBook's cam just proved more challenging than I thought.

What's cool about it is that not only can you set each note in each step of the sequence, but the type of oscillator per note (ie square, sine or white noise for snares/claps), the volume of each step, and you've got 3 octaves to choose from.

But that's not the best part - as shown in the video, it's using the iPhone's accelerometer to mess with the filters - the cutoff and resonance.
