Practical Electronics Sound Synthesizer and the Minisonic
There is a current thread on the SDIY list regarding who has the oldest DIY synth. You might remember Jim Patchell's 1978 DIY modular.Geoff built the Sound Synthesizer designed by G.D. Shaw featured in Practical Electronics.
"I built the Practical Electronics Sound Synthesiser featured in the February 1973 issue of the magazine. I think it was the first DIY Synth to be published in the UK. For those who have never seen this, the designers page is here (Shaw's Corner), click on 'New Stuff v Old Hat' and scroll down to the front cover of the magazine"

"An interest in the physics of sound meant that 1972 saw the design of a Sound Synthesiser. The prototype instrument is shown on the far left. Practical Electronics agreed to publish the design providing that it was made in modular form and equipped with a keyboard. The resulting instrument is shown on the front cover of PE for February 1973 and the series ran for a total of thirteen months."

"Hi. I also built the 1973 Practical Electronics synth . Added the VCF that was published later. It had a sample and hold module that is still unrivalled. There were two simple but incredibly useful differential inverter/non-inverter/mixer amps. The ramp generators are very interesting eg: one ramp through the non-inverting and the other ramp output to the inverting input- this result to osc or filter. All my modules still work. This was a well thought out design. It was of course intended as a 'sound workshop' rather than a keyboard synth. The only glaring omission was the VCF. ... also had a great Ring Modulator..and voltage controlled stereo output amps."

El Aviador Dro are an outstanding band. Their 1st ever US tour brought them to a Rhumba club in Queens in 2006 where I captured the updated sound (sans 303) of "Nuclear Si":

Recording Oberheim DX for new Criborn track.

"Today we started working on a new track for Niclas Criborns solo project. He said he wanted a slightly more harder electronic feel for the track. So I started off by taking out the Electribe and then I just felt it would be too simple...so I used the Oberheim DX instead. I hooked it up to the Roland Re-501, a moogerfooger analog delay and the sinister Sherman Filterbank MK I and then into a Urei compressor.
I think it turned out o.k.
This film was shot at my studio, Roth Händle. It is located in Stockholm Sweden and is available for sessions, or full productions. For more info please mumble by www.roth-handle.nu"

"Tomorrow Thursday will be a big day because we will be changing the power supply for the Yamaha GX-1.
But yesterday I had a wonderful swedish band visiting me in the studio. The are called the beat from Palookaville and I couldn't resist turning on the GX-1 and let Torbjörn fiddle around with the giant synth. The synth is terribly out of tune because we didn't really let it warm up but you can sort of get an idea of the textures...YOu should also keep in mind that this is the first time Torbjörn sat down at this synth. Anyways it might be of some interest...
I think he was very intrigued by the knee control...

Dubsounds Vintage Drum Player and the KORG KR-55
I previously posted on Dubsounds back on May 16, 2006. Back then it was on their MOOG Polymoog page.Recently Kris wrote into the Analog Heaven email list with links to images of three version of the KORG KR-55, the original, the KR-55B revision 1 and the KR-55B revision 2. I asked him about putting up a post and he pointed me to the source of the images, the Dubsounds KR-55 info page.
You will find more info including history, images and samples as well as sample sets for sale. To check out the samples, click on the "Listen To My Beats" button. A player will come up in which you can select the KROG KR-55, and other drum machines. A drop down with the presets for each will come up. You can select any and listen the full rhythm.

A very historic item, as the sequencer in the MUSE is considered the very first digital instrument ever!, designed by two engineers from MIT, Marvin Minsky and Edward Friedkin. An extremely rare piece only about 240 of these were ever made, and not typically available for commercial sale. This piece is in excellent working condition. The woodwork is also in excellent shape. As you can see from the photos, the faceplate, writing and original lights have all been very well preserved also. The unit also comes with a detailed manual. The synth has a great sound, which can be monitored both through a built-in speaker, as well as an external speaker that can be easily connected through the back. The sequencer for this item is very unique and unusual. The knobs definitely makes me feel a more rich, almost as if I could afford a Buchla. It's almost like picturing your girlfriend is Shannyn Sossamon while you're...... *ahem*. Anyways this is almost like cheating... so aside from the wiggle causing hallucinations, I'm going to assume that they're a welcome change because I treat my gear like crap and a little give on the knobs will keep them from getting bent."
