MOTM-320 Voltage-Controlled LFO

via this auction

'The MOTM-320 is a full-featured Voltage-Controlled Low-Frequency Oscillator (VC LFO). Unlike the crude LFOs found in most synths, the MOTM-320 has 4 individual outputs plus a master SHAPE control. This control voltage will shift the shapes of the Pulse, Sine, and Saw outputs in unison. Both 1 volt/octave (temperature compensated!) and variable FM (through a reversing attenuator to go up or down) inputs are available.

Another unique feature is a SYNC input: a positive voltage will reset all 4 waveforms. You can sync to just about any waveform: from another LFO to EG's.

The MOTM-320 is not your standard cheap LFO: it has a full-blown VCO core with discrete waveshaping based on the Moog modular and the VCS3! The core has an astounding frequency range of 1 cycle in 30 minutes to about 2800Hz. A bi-color LED flashes at the LFO rate, and can be set with a jumper to indicate 4 different ways!

Don't sacrifice a VCO as a full-featured LFO: get the MOTM-320 and let the modulations begin!'"

MOTM-101 Noise/Sample and Hold

via this auction

"MOTM-101 Description

'The MOTM-101 is an essential part of any synthesizer system. It is a dual-function module, where the Noise Generator is linked to the Sample/Hold section without the use of patchcords. Each section can operate independent of the other.

NOISE GENERATOR

The Noise Generator uses 2 Zener diodes to create White Noise. This White noise contains spectral harmonics from near DC to well above hearing. This type of noise is useful for simulating cymbals, ocean waves, static, and other types of "nature" sounds. It is also useful in generating random signals into the Sample & Hold, and for aperiodic, high-speed clocking.

The White Noise is low-pass filtered at approx. 2500Hz to create Pink Noise. Pink Noise is useful for lower frequency sounds such as thunder. The Pink Noise is filtered even more to generate Random Output, which can randomly modulate filters and VCOs.

These three types of noise are found on many synthesizers. However, look closely and you will see the jack labeled VIBRATO, and its associated control pot! This is a MOTM exclusive: a high-Q bandpass filter (the panel control controls the Q) that generates sine waves centered around 7Hz of random amplitudes (and slightly varying frequencies as well). On the panel, a switch selects driving the bandpass filter with either white noise or the internal/external clock from the Sample & Hold section. When the panel switch selects white noise, the vibrato output is a 'wandering' sine wave, perfect for adding realistic vibrato and tremelo. If the switch is in the clock position, each time the clock cycles the output filter rings in a dampened sine wave (the ringing amount set by the panel control). When fed to a VCO, the VCO makes a unique "bbbooooiiinnngggggg" sound.

SAMPLE & HOLD

A Sample & Hold circuit is a sort of voltage memory: each time the clock generator cycles, the signal on the INPUT jack is captured and stored on a special capacitor. This voltage is buffered and fed to the OUTPUT jack. Even with many seconds between samples, the output voltage remains nearly constant (since no circuit is perfect, the output voltage will droop, but at a miniscule rate on the order of 1mv per second). The MOTM-101 contains an internal clock oscillator, whose speed is set by the panel control. A red LED flashes at the clock rate. Plugging another clock source (VCO, LFO, etc) into the EXTERNAL jack over-rides the internal oscillator.

Again, a Sample & Hold is a part of all synthesizers....but wait! Hmmmm...what's that switch marked Track/Hold? Another MOTM exclusive! In the HOLD position, the circuit acts like a "normal" S/H: the output is held steady at the start of each clock cycle. But, in the TRACK position, the output follows (tracks) the input when the clock is low (less than 1.5 volts) and holds the output when the clock is above 1.5 volts. If you are familar with TTL digital logic, this mode is referred to as a 'transparent latch'. From a musical standpoint, this can generate more unique sounds than other S/H modules.

The SLEW control adds portamento or glide to the S&H output. It can be adjusted from zero to 10 seconds.'"

Parallax - "Ryu." Live synth super-mega colon-blowing keytar soloing!

YouTube via hamsterdunce | July 10, 2010

"More music on umop.com/parallax.htm

Skip ahead to @3:30 for the keytar solo if you're the impatient type.

After uploading a live version of another "VIsit the Entropics" tune last week ("Umlaut" - which I promise to redo as well) and being thoroughly disappointed with its audio quality, I decided to offer up this fun indoors direct-audio performance of "Ryu" that's quite a bit more watchable. I'm basically just playing along with the CD here, and the solo is so incredibly hard to double that I decided to harmonize with most of it instead. The result is an occasionally messy wank that has moments of pure alien bliss.

Roland A-90: Battery explaination, cleaning and removing hammer action keys.

YouTube via TheSynthFreq | July 11, 2010

"Hi. :)
This is a short ,hopefully helpful video on how to locate the internal battery and how to go about removing and replacing it. Remember that the A-90 requires a CR2032 battery and that it should be replaced every 5 to 10 years to ensure best operation and avoid a leaking battery, which is dangerous for synths. These batteries are only about $2 and can be found at Walgreen's, or Radio Shack or any other store that carries batteries and electronics.
I also attempt to explain the process of how to remove the hammer action (P4 keybed) keys from the A-90ex. Often times after a long life, there will be lots of dust and grime under those keys since the grease traps the dust that falls in between them. I normally remove every key and weight once a year and give it a thorough cleaning as a preventative measure against dust and also to check the hammers themselves to find cracks or any broken weights. You can tell if a weight is broken by either the loud "pop" that is heard, or if the key "caves in".

Please enjoy the video and let me know if there is any further explanations needed. :)

:) TSF

Note: The A-90ex was not harmed in the making of this video. lol"

Elektor Formant with step sequencer

video upload by MusicMiK

"Finally i got the missing VCO module for my Elektor Formant. And there also was "something else" in the box, which clearly looked like a step sequencer.

After finding out where the loose cables go and where power has to go, it needed some repair and now works quite fine. According to the chip labels, this thing might be built 1978, it's a very simple design with a 4520 binary counter, 3 4051 for potentiometer multiplexing and sequence control, together with a 4001 which generates the reset signal for the 4520.
The main clock comes from a NE555, the output buffers are TL071 now as one of the CA3130 was dead.

I don't know more about this thing, it looks a bit like a kit, but it also might just be built around a commercial PCB (single sided hand-drawn layout but white print on the component side). No signs about who made this thing, no schematics available (but in fact, it could be developed from scratch in less than a day i think :)

No, i didn't take care of dialing in any well-sounding melody, so it for sure sounds a bit strange..."

Roland TR-808 T-Shirt by The Dole Shirt

Some pics of my recently received Roland TR-808 T-Shirt from The Dole Shirt. You might remember it from this video. I have to say, this T is pretty nice. It's a standard Gildan cotton T. I'll see how the print holds up over time, it does look great. I like the Dole Shirt logo on the back - it's not too large, about the size of the bottom of a beer bottle.

Lightfoot Labs: Goatkeeper3 (color variants)

flickr by Analogue Haven

via Analogue Haven where you'll find some samples.

"goatkeeper 3 is an all analog signal path, digitally controlled tremolo. it's unique sound is due it's analog vca (voltage controlled amplifier) and highly customizable waveforms. six of the eleven waveforms are standard; the other five can be created and saved using the waveform recorder function. either goatkeeper's depth knob or the expression/cv input can be used as the source for waveform recording. a four step sequencer multiplies the lfo's rate by either 1,2,3,4,6,8, or 16. a step can also be set to full amplitude or minimum amplitude. the random setting will select between 1 through 16 or minimum amplitude. lfo rate is set by tap tempo (requiring two or more taps), the expression/cv input, or external sync input.

features:
capable of completely unique sounds as well as standard tremolo

advanced lfo
four step sequencer
skip a step by setting it to ">>"
set the step to multiply the speed by 2,3,4,6,8,16
set the step to minimum or maximum amplitude
set the step to random, selecting between 1 through 16 ro minimum amplitude
waveform recorder function - draw an arbitrary waveform
six preset waveforms and five slots for user drawn waveforms

tap tempo speed control
set tempo duration from approximately 250 msec to 6 seconds
the resulting speed can then be multiplied by up to 16 times using the sequencer knobs

either the depth knob or expression/cv input is used to "draw" the waveform when in waveform record mode
expression/cv input for control over lfo rate
external sync input - syncs goatkeeper to an audio click track
100% analog signal path
relay bypass"

Synthesis Technology: E560 Deflector Shield

"Week 28 in my project to write one new song each week for the year 2010.
When I started this project to write one new song each week I hadn't planned to use my Tenroi-On for each week's song, but I find it easer to coordinate all the elements of a song using the Tenori-On than using a DAW/Tracker. When I start to work on my computer I get lost very quickly with too many possibilities. Maybe it's having a physical instrument in my hands, rather than the 101 VSTs on my PC, that helps concentrate my mind."
