Mystery CV-controlled quad audio box - Buchla?

via Brian Kehew

"My friend found this in some surplus yard near the Bay Area. It's a CV-controlled quad audio box of some kind, with joystick control. Missing most of its guts and no labels. Obviously not a production unit. Wonder if it's related to the Grateful Dead concerts in quad?"

Anyone have any ideas?

Update via Cooper Sloan in the comments: "Looks buchla... Besides proximity to Berkley and aesthetics the blue pcb is a clue."

via Brian: "Not Buchla from the people I've asked, and the connectors etc are different. But it seems so similar in style, so maybe a related copy. He had a lot of people work for him that could have built this as well."

via Dennis Matana on the AH list: "Looks like something from Elektor. They also used blue pcb's...and the connectors look similar. I'm restoring a Formant at the moment and also the vocoder from Elektor."

Update via gchang (Gary Chang) in the comments: "The obvious Buchla nod is the jack selection - using banana jacks for the cv inputs, but none of the layout is at all similar to Buchla devices, who rarely created anything with conventional VCAs.

My guess is that it is a custom quad locator made for a studio that had a Buchla system as the main unit of the room... "

Pantomation (1977-1979)

YouTube via VintageCG | March 02, 2010

"Pantomation was a very early tracking chromakey system from the 1970s. Originally intended for music scoring, the system was adapted to other styles of performance art. While crude by modern standards, the concept was decades ahead of its time; it can reasonably be considered an early forebear of systems like Microsoft's Project Natal."

via Retro Thing, via Jimmersound

Update via Richard Lainhart in the comments:
"Coincidently enough, I was involved in this project - I hard-wired most of the computer interface for the Pantomation system, later called the Electric Pantograph. There's a history of the project here, some of which is used in the narration of the film"

http://www.experimentaltvcenter.org/history/groups/gtext.php3?id=32

I was working as a musician/technician with EBA then, and knew Tom Dewitt, the main designer of the system, from the SUNY Albany Electronic Music Studio, where I studied with Joel Chadabe. You can see a brief shot of the mighty Moog CEMS system in that studio at about 3:35 in the video."

Pianist Pro V1.5 - Now with Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer support

Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer on Ebay

"Line 6 have recently made their API available for iOS developers to add support for their MIDI Mobilizer interface. We are pleased to announce that Pianist Pro will be the first application taking advantage of this, in a forthcoming V1.5 update.

Pianist Pro is the market-leading piano simulator for the iPad. Recommended by global media sources such as The New York Times and Rolling Stone Magazine, it was also recently used in a live performance by legendary band Squeeze on the Jimmy Fallon Show (NBC).

MIDI Mobilizer is currently the only hardware MIDI interface for the iOS platform, providing a pair of MIDI cables that can be plugged directly into external devices such as MIDI controller keyboards and modules, or a computer interface to control Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software such as Logic, Garageband or Cubase.

With our existing MIDI-via-OSC technology, Pianist Pro can already be used as a wireless master MIDI keyboard to control external soft or hard synths. MIDI Mobilizer now allows us to offer a robust wired alternative for live performance, together with bi-directional control enabling Pianist Pro to also act as a MIDI sound source or sequencer driven by an external hardware keyboard. Now you can record your song ideas on the road with nothing more than an iPad and portable MIDI keyboard, and then import those songs into your DAW via a Standard MIDI File when back at the studio.

We have put together a short video [above] showcasing a few examples of using Pianist Pro and MIDI, both with the new Line 6 interface, and with a wireless connection using OSC.

The V1.5 Pianist Pro update is currently "In review" at Apple and so we would expect it to go live within a couple of days. In addition to adding support for MIDI Mobilizer, it also adds wireless MIDI via DSMI, and optimized wireless MIDI via OSC.

Butsudan

"BUTSUDAN" - the Japanese's heart

"BUTSUDAN(the Buddhist altar)" has been a major Japanese furnishing goods not only as an altar to enshrine Buddha, but also as superior traditional handicrafts. However today, as the living environment around Japnanese families change, there are only a few families have "BUTSUDAN" in their homes.

"we want "BUTSUDAN" back to Japanese home,"

We have worked out to create a compact "BUTSUDAN" that may fit in the modern Japanese families and homes.

Now, we have brought to complete "BUTSUDAN" application for iPad.

"BUTSUDAN" applocation has some important functions that makes what this is as "BUTSUDAN"

Selecting a picture from picture library and inputting name on the
name plate, then you can enshrine pictures and name plate in "BUTSUDAN".

This application also has other ordinary "BUTSUDAN" functions such as lighting candles and sticks of incense, offering flowers and rice-cakes,
sounding a temple block and a bell.

** Drum Mode

This application also has innovative "drum mode" on board for young users who are not familiar with ordinary "BUTSUDAN".

Kong 808 Refill for Reason 5 / Record 1.5 Preview

YouTube via PeffTV | August 31, 2010

"First and foremost, this is an attempt to create a usable Roland TR-808 sample set for the Kong Drum Designer in Propellerhead Software Reason 5 / Record 1.5. From there, it's become a sound design experiment to see how the original sounds can be manipulated using the various effects in the Kong Drum Designer device. This is a preview of some of the patch sets for the refill.

The sampling of the TR-808 is fairly extensive with over 500 individual samples. 250 variations of the dry tones and their corresponding accent tones. Multiple samples of Hand Clap and Hi Hats reveal the analog nature of the 808 as no two samples of the same tone are identical.

Some tones are processed through some hardware and DSP to create special effect palettes, but the source of all the sounds is based on the 808 hardware.

Minimoog Model D w/ MIDI & signed Vintage Synthesizers

via this auction

seller's details:
"I’ve owned this vintage Minimoog (serial #7578) since late 1976 and am its second owner. In 1999, it was electronically refurbished and updated with the Lintronics MIDI retrofit by the best tech in the synth business, John "J.L." Leimseider. Excerpt from www.lintronics.de/minimoog.html: “The Lintronics MIDI Converter (LMC) is a high-performance MIDI interface designed by Rudi Linhard to place the expressive potential of the Minimoog under MIDI control. The LMC uses state-of-the-art digital circuitry and software and includes an internal, programmable, wide-range, multi-waveform LFO that can be used in addition to, or in place of, the Minimoog's LFO. Pitch, pitch bend, filter cutoff, loudness, modulation amount, and the internal LFO's rate and depth can all be controlled through MIDI in real time and with high resolution. In addition, the Glide and Decay functions can be turned on and off through MIDI. The LMC circuitry is contained on a single circuit board installed inside the Minimoog, and uses its power supply.” Note that the Lintronics retrofit is for reception only, not transmission, and has no effect on the Minimoog’s standard operation.

This Minimoog has always lived in an entirely smoke-free environment. It was used in a few outdoor concerts under the sun, resulting in slight warping on the right side of the black plastic faceplate, and the bottom right corner has snapped off. There are minor scratches on either side of the wooden cabinet, but otherwise the Minimoog is in perfect working condition. It comes with Dr. Tom Rhea’s manual, documentation for the LMC retrofit, a 9' S-trigger cable terminated with male ¼" TS and S-Trigger plugs at either end, and an ATA-rated Anvil case in which I’ve replaced the original, deteriorated innards with new polyethylene foam.

Bid now and win the auction and, along with two vintage 12" x 5" Moog stickers, I’ll include a brand new copy of the first edition of Vintage Synthesizers, not only featuring an outstanding article written about the Minimoog Model D by the late, great BOB MOOG himself, but also personally signed by the author SPECIFICALLY FOR YOU!"
