Galapagoose Live on The City Rises

Galapagoose Live on The City Rises, RRR, 02-10-10, Pt 1. from rambl on Vimeo.

"When Melbourne's Galapagoose (galapagoose.tumblr.com/) came into the RRR studios in Melbourne two weeks ago he set The City Rises alight with his 40 minute, 100% live set of deftly played head nodders and foot stompers. We've had calls, emails, likes, reposts and several hundred listens since he was on, and that was just for the music!

Now we have the videos to prove just how live it really was. I chose a few choice moments but if you want to hear the entire, epic 40 minutes go to: thecityrises.com/2010/10/the-city-rises-044-w-galapagoose/

And keep an eye out for Galapagoose in your area code...

ps. If you are interested in the machine that Galapagoose is using check out monome.org/ and be prepared for some seriously masterful geekery!"

Squarewave Parade Ming Ming Stereo Analog Ring Mod

via this auction

"Free State Custom Electronics

the Squarewave Parade Ming Ming - Used

Only 10 Made!!!

Here is a description from the Squarewave Parade website:

'yet another silly name. this is a stereo ( dual mono ) analog passive ring ( or "balanced" ) modulator that is also capable of producing an octave up if only one input is used (achieved via internal switching - there are no other controls). unlike most ring modulators you will find this one does not come with a built in oscillator. this is done on purpose to give you the chance to use your own modulator and as a result it gives you a much wider range of possibilities. everything from AM radio static to tempo matched drum loops can be used to modulate your source. use of line level instruments like synths, mixers, and sound cards would be ideal. being a passive design ( meaning it does not require any power source to operate ) you will need to increase the level of quieter signals, such as guitar, to get the ring to work. you can do this by adding a pre-amp, booster, distortion pedal, channel of a mixer, etc... before that input. you may also want to boost the output depending on your intentions. its made with hand matched germanium diodes for minimal signal bleed which i also matched between each of the two units inside. the transformers on the input and output will also yield a nice thick organic distortion when over-driven.'"

aurex LP : SampleDeck and Masher

YouTube via aurexlive | September 02, 2010

"The SampleDeck is a realtime sampling and remix device for the Novation Launchpad.
It uses 2 'samplers' to capture a loop while your song is playing and you have the ability to switch the audio to one of the samplers at any time you want. The Remix Sampler samples a 1 bar or 1/2 bar loop, it chops it up in slices and let's you rearrange the slices in any way you want. The Flex Sampler samples a loop (as long as you like) and let's you do Vinyl-like actions such as stopping/starting the plate, doing a backspin, reversing, ... You can remix and transform everything you want: just a loop, full songs when dj-ing or even a realtime input to remix a live band on the fly. On top of that, SampleDeck also includes an effects section to spice things up. I included a manual to explain all of it's functions and buttons.

You don't need M4L / Bome / ... to use this, just make sure you have a Launchpad and Live 8.1.3 or higher.

aurex LP : Masher

"The Masher is an FX Sequencer / FX Device made with Ableton Live 8 for the Novation Launchpad. Send any track you want to the masher and start cutting, mashing, repeating, looping, ... This works great for giving a track an extra boost when playing live or even for mixing/mashing two tracks in an original way.

You can sequence 4 different effects and the original track and you have a pad on the LP to flip between the sequenced/effected track and the clear and original track. On top of that you also have 6 master effects and 2 beat repeaters.

You don't need M4L/Bome/... just make sure you use Live 8.1.3 or higher.

- Troxic: drumcomputer

Studio Electronics MIDImini MIDI Minimoog rack module

via this auction

Not only does the MIDI MINI fit in a much smaller space and weigh a lot less than the original Mini - It's also got MIDI built in. That's right - no need to fuss with a MIDI to CV convertor and figure out how to hook it up to that crazy S trigger connector. But not only does it have MIDI, it also responds to after touch and velocity, pitch bend and modulation wheel. It's also got an extra LFO for vibrato, so you don't have to tie up the 3rd oscillator for this as you would on a stock Mini Moog. AND it's also got oscillator sync, which can be swept by an envelope generator for that Cars distorted guitar lead sound everyone knows It's also got switchable note priority modes. This unit makes a nice alternative to an original Minimoog due to its improvements, portable package and greater reliability.

Stockhausen: "Gesang der Junglinge"

YouTube via NewMusicXX | October 31, 2008

"Karlheinz Stockhausen: "Gesang der Junglinge" (Song of the Youths) (1955-56). A piece of electronic music utilizing both synthesized and vocal sounds. The vocal syllables are derived from the "Song of the Youths in the Fiery Furnace" from Daniel. Unfortunately, due to the time constraints of youtube videos, the last couple of minutes of this beautiful and historically important work of Stockhausen, were deleted from this recording."

You can find a great interview with Stockausen here, sent my way via Z of New Alliance East. Stockhausen was given some music by Aphex Twin, Plasticman, Scanner and Daniel Pemberton. You can find his critique in the interview.

As this site is primarily about the gear:

"Going back to Kreuzspiel - that was around the time you first started using
technology...

'Yes. 1952 I started working in the studio for musique concrete, of the French radio. Because I was very intrigued by the possibility to compose one's own sound. I was allowed to work in the studio of Pierre Scaeffer: I made artificial sounds, synthetic sounds, and I composed my first étude: Étude Concrète. At the same time, I was extremely curious, and went to the musée de L'homme in Paris with a tape recorder and microphones, and I recorded all the different instruments of the ethnological department: Indonesian instruments, Japanese instruments, Chinese instruments; less European instruments because I knew them better, but even piano sounds... Then I analysed these sounds one by one, and wrote down the frequencies which I found and the dynamic level of the partials of the spectra, in order to know what the sound is made of, what the sound is, as a matter of fact; what is the difference between a lithophone sound or, let's say, a Thai gong sound of a certain pitch. And very slowly I discovered the nature of sounds. The idea to analyse sounds gave me the idea synthesize sounds. so then I was looking for synthesizers or the first electronic generators, and I superimposed vibrations in order to compose spectra: timbres. I do this now, still, after 43 years.'"

The mods are the same as on the other 808 I modded, which is also up here"

AS3 Particle Node Sequencer

via Soulwire where you'll find the download.

"This sequencer is based around physical nodes, which connect to produce a variety of tones. There are two types of node, a neuron and a receptor, which are connected by synapses (apologies for the trite analogies). Neurons fire periodically, and if within a certain proximity of a receptor, this message is sent at a fixed speed along the bridging synapse. When the message arrives, the receptor is activated and responds by queuing it’s individual tone within the audio engine. Each receptor owns a randomly assigned note, and each neuron a randomly assigned octave; therefor a receptor will play it’s note in several different octaves depending on which neuron causes it to fire."

via Chris Borman on the Rhodes Chroma list:

"The August 1984 issue of Down Beat described Zawinul's keyboard arsenal at the time of Domino Theory. Zawinul's stage setup included seven keyboards: an Oberheim 8 Voice, an ARP Quadra, an E-Mu Emulator, a Rhodes Chroma, a Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, a Korg Vocoder with auxiliary keyboard, and a Prophet T-8. The T-8 was Zawinul's newest instrument, an eight-voice synthesizer with a touch-sensitive keyboard. "I have as much control as you can have," Zawinul said of the T-8. "It's velocity- and touch-sensitive so when you touch down, you can get your own vibrato; you can preprogram your vibrato and speed." In addition, Zawinul used a Linn LM-1 drum machine, a Sequential Circuits Polysequencer, and various harmonizers and digital delay units. [DB84]"

The ± attenuators on the filter audio and control voltage (CV) inputs, combined with and the filter's asymmetrical response are the reasons why Jealous Heart excels when used feedback and chaotic patches.
