'This module is a dual utility LFO offering manually variable wave shapes. Standard waveshapes are falling ramp variable through triangle to rising ramp, and variable pulse width. A fixed square is also available, as is a combination waveshape that is variable between the saw/tri output and the square. This is a MIX not a morph. Optional switches allow the variable outputs of the two LFOs to be intermixed.

The Utility LFO is based on the standard integrator/schmitt trigger oscillator core. Two pots in the integrator charge path allow for the adjustment of speed, and along with two diodes, for the adjustment of charge versus discharge time. Changing this ratio will allow the triangle/saw output to be adjusted through falling ramp, to triangle to rising ramp. At the same time, the output of the schmitt trigger will reflect this in the length of it output pulse.

A a 0 volt referenced comparator connected to the output of the integrator generates a square wave as there is always an equal portion the ramp/triangle wave above the 0 volt reference, though adjustment of the shape of the ramp/triangle wave does change the phase of this square wave.

Following the comparator is a buffered voltage divider to bring the square wave done to a more suitable level and also to drive one side of the variable output mixer pot. The other side of the variable output mixer pot is connected directly to the integrator output. The variable output is buffered is used post mixer by another op-amp.'"

Pixelh8's SONUS (ONE)

"Sonus (One)" is a spatial realisation of aleatoric or randomly generated music. Although not all of the music is left to chance, the player can intervene albeit in a seemingly haphazard manner. Use the blocks either to block the flow of the balls or to trap them removing them from play.

The software is in part inspired by the work and teachings of John Cage, with "Sonus (One)" adding the dimension of space to the music of chance. Not only letting "sounds be themselves" but giving them room to do so.

"Sonus (One)" is part of the "Otherwise Autonomous" collection of digital instruments designed and programmed by Pixelh8."

"I've resurrected some VST patches and put together an instrument and effects rack with some matrix routing. In this video, I load a couple of free VST plug ins: the Ticky Klav from Big Tick kvraudio.com/get/190.html instrument and the +delay from soundhack.com. I started with a simple sound, layered it up with multiple instances, then went nuts with multiple instances of +delay for a big mess of sound, quite divorced from the original. I use the matrix routers to send audio from the sources and also get some feedback on the effects, which is of course a bit dangerous as you will hear! I'll gradually introduce our controllers into the mix, but for now, I'm just triggering sounds with the Code (as you see in the MIDI source menu)."

Modular Synthesizer Cabinets

"This is a follow up video to my desktop modular synth video featuring a showcase of my new cabinet (DFMZ-2) and the desktop controller (DFMZ-Desktop) alongside my first cabinet (DFMZ-1). The Technosaurus Small Wonders Series Tower was also finalized this Summer and now all are set up and being used in my little studio.

The cabinets feature a custom stencil graphic to simulate the graphic style of the Technosaurus small wonders on all of the sides, back and bottom. The first cabinet was left raw after graphics and the front faces left natural oak to kind of give it that old school desk or laboratory equipment look. The second cabinet was laquer clearcoated (6 coats) after the graphics and polished to a glossy shine. The front face has decal pro graphics buried under the clearcoat at the corners and features custom hand laid pinstriping by BRUCE. The desktop controller features custom solid mahogany end caps with woodburning graphical pattern, cleacoated and polished to a high gloss shine. Sheet metal between the wood sides and fitting into milled groove on sides, also, the Doepfer rails feature a notch on the back side which receives the sheet metal enclosure for a snug, secure fit. Sheet metal painted with same colors and graphical pattern as cabinets, clearcoated and polished. The inside of the desktop was painted white to allow maximum radiance of the bright blue led's on the Monorocket distribution board, custom light pipe made for amplifying this light.

The music that accompanies this video was something I had on an old tape in the deck and was just used to have something to listen to in the video. Having some fun with the Korg DVP-1 vocoder with vocals from my friend Marcus Maximus. "He'll save everyone of us" - Enjoy"

In my current software I have temporarily disabled portamento control and instead use the portamento pot to control detune spread amount. The patch to replace portamento with unison detune is just 43 bytes, amazing what you can acheive with full hardware control..."

RABACAL is an national park in Madeira, Portugal. You can't go there directly by car, but the tour across the mountains is so great, even by day as by night, absolute stunning. In the clip you'll follow the night drive from Porto Moniz about Encumeada to Ribeira Brava. The main altitude is around 1600m, there's no fog, it are the clouds which i'm driving through."

I mostly am using it as a gentle flanger in this demo but it is far more powerful than what I demo here. I also finished a project where I was modifying a stock Q111 Pan/Fade module from Synthesizers.com. I added an attenuator pot to the control input and added an inverter circuit to the output #2. This enables the Panning portion of the module to output audio to two channels of my mixer in stereo. I have control over how wide the panning is and both output channels are normal (un-inverted) so there is no cancellation when sending to effects etc..

I am using several other delay units as well in this demo. TC Electronics D-Two is way in the background so it isn't really a factor. Strymon 's Blue Sky Reverberator is the heavy plate reverb in the background. The Korg Kaoss 3 pad is used to have some looping fun, but I tried to keep it low level so not to interfere with the demo of the 1310 delay module.

There are four separate voices playing in this piece from the modular. The sequencers are generating various time signatures and loops but all of the distorted flanging effect is the 1310 Digital Delay. This is one fun unit and a great addition to my modular synth.

The title is about the amount of time since I got serious about building a modular synth to work with. It has been a little over two years (9 seasons) since I made the commitment. No looking back and I am very happy with the move away from dedicated keyboards and soft synths (although I still use them for other things).

Thanks to Doug Slocum at Synthetic Sound Labs for the great delay module. He has other ideas in the works and I am very excited about the future of his endeavor."

"The HZ-600 was the first SD synthesizer, and was the only SD synthesizer built to look like a "professional" synthesizer, i.e., without built-in speakers or auto-accompaniment controls. In contrast to the bulky-looking Casio CZ line, the HZ-600 was deliberately styled after the sleek-looking Roland Alpha Juno 2 right down to the inclusion of an "alpha-dial" programming wheel. The HZ-600 was a 61-key, 8-note polyphonic basic-MIDI synthesizer without initial- or after-touch, and functionally was essentially an advanced Korg Poly-800. Like the Poly-800, all voices (in each channel) shared a single VCF, meaning the VCF envelope would retrigger when a new note was played, affecting all previous notes still playing. The HZ-600 included 3 levels of onboard analog chorus, 3 selectable keyboard split points, 3 selectable pitch-bender ranges, a modulation wheel, transpose, and a card slot for the new sleek Casio RA-100 RAM cards, which had 8K of memory.
