BITLEY Casio VZ-1/VZ-10M/VZ-8M Sound Bank

via Patrick Fridh on the MATRIXSYNTH Facebook Group

"The world’s most incredible journey of a tiny, tiny file

1. The Casio VZ sound bank was programmed by myself, naturally, on the front panel of my Casio VZ-1.

2. I later sold these sounds on 3,5″ Atari floppy disks and I think I had at a maximum 2 or 3 buyers of the soundbank, ever.

3. I worked from my apartement in the utterly small town of Gnesta, Sweden, with the address Stora Torget 1, 646 31 Gnesta. This was my first own address after having moved out of my parents’ home.

4. 18 years later I find the file on the internet.

5. The file is hosted somewhere in the United States.

I just find this incredibly amusing.

6. Naturally, the copying of the file originally was an illegal act. Given the historic event and how amusing I find this, I must say, that this utterly criminal act hereby is utterly forgiven. Seen as how it all flew back to myself, I would, incredibly enough even say that I salute the poor soul who did this. Even though I spent several months working intensively with programming the data, using such a totally confusing system as the Casio VZ-1 is, to do it.

7. Since I even had lost the backup of the file myself, the sound bank is now fully in the hands of the Public Domain."

You can find the sound bank on BITLEY here.

Pittsburgh Modular: Analog Delay

flickr By Analogue Haven

"Introducing the Analog Delay, from Pittsburgh Modular.

This is a brand new 16 HP analog delay designed around two 4096 stage low noise BBD chips. The Analog Delay features a clean 9/10th of a second adjustable delay time and CV control of Rate, Feedback, and Mix.

The delay range starts at about 55ms up to several seconds of "sludge". The maximum delay is set with a trim pot so you can choose to use the "sludge" or not. The module will ship with the max delay time set at 9/10th second.

The delay will self oscillate and can be FM'd using the Rate CV input.

The module should be available in April and it will cost $249.

MVIP with sequenced oscillator

YouTube Uploaded by DaveJonesVideo on Mar 6, 2011

"Made with the Jones MVIP and a sequenced AFG oscillator. The MVIP is a Euro module for image processing. It was controlled by a Z8000 sequencer that changed the speed of the AFG oscillator. A pair of A-110 oscillators and a multi-mode filter were also controlled by the sequencer to make the sounds.

Info on the MVIP (Mini Video Image Processor) can be found at www.jonesvideo.com"

"The MVIP is a Euro rack module, designed to fit into audio synthesizer racks made by Doepfer and other manufacturers. It is a stand alone video module, not part of the larger video synth system that I am still developing.

Specs:

Width: 14HP (2.8 inches)

Depth: 2.56 inches (6.5 cm)

Power: 140ma of +12 and -12 volts

Inputs: Composite video (NTSC or PAL), five control voltage inputs for +5 to -5 volts

Output: Composite video (NTSC or PAL) matches the format of the input, or jumper selected if no video input

Price: $595 plus shipping"

MVIP video synth manual control demo

Uploaded by DaveJonesVideo on Nov 17, 2010

"A demo of the MVIP Mini Video Image Processor using just manual controls. This is a Euro rack compatible video synth module that processes a single input in either NTSC or PAL. This demo doesn't show the voltage control capabilities. It just gives an overview of the types of video effects that the MVIP creates.

After, this recording goes into Audacity where it is doubled, compressed, equalized, downpitchshifted, remixed and "re-stereoed" in a certain way, always the same one. "

Muse Research Receptor 2 Komplete Demo

YouTube Uploaded by virtualoberheim on Mar 7, 2011

"http://www.museresearch.com/

Muse Research Receptor 2 is a hardware VST player in rack format. Instead of fixed functions and algorithms it's powered by freely expandable VST instruments and VST effects and so has virtually no limits in what it can do.

Receptor 2 can be used as piano module, synthesizer, sampler, drum module, effects processor and guitar processor.

Its connections inlude guitar input, headphone connector, analog stereo outs, s/pdif in/out, adat, MIDI in/out, usb, mouse and monitor connectors.

All functions of Receptor can be accessed by its front panel, so mouse and monitor are optional. If they are connected Receptor offers a graphical mixer environment and it too allows to edit the plugins with their graphic interfaces.

The featured plugins in this video include:

- Native Instruments Kontakt
- Native Instruments FM8
- Native Instruments Battery
- Native Instruments Guitar Rig
- SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II
- USB Plugsound 2 Fretted
- USB Plugsound 4 Synth Collection

Native Instruments Komplete 7 and the Plugsound Box Collection are pre-installed in the featured Receptor

Used Kontakt Libraries:

- NI Upright Piano
- NI New York Grand
- Scarbee EP200 Wurlitzer Piano

There's no noticeable latency while playing. Playing Receptor feels the same as playing a hardware instrument.

Highly recommended - it's a dream machine!

Program hi-hats with frostwave step sequencer

YouTube Uploaded by thetonewrecker on Mar 7, 2011

"Frostwave step sequencer is hooked up to send midi note and velocity data to an Alesis DM-Pro drum module. I've programmed a patch where all note numbers in the DM-Pro have various high hat and cymbal sounds only rather than full kits of assorted drum sounds.
The top row of sliders are sending a midi note number out based on position and the matching slider below sends a velocity value for that step. You can mute steps (via the buttons at the bottom) if needed, but setting the velocity down to zero is quicker. There is also a few spots showing switching the cycling step length from 4 to 8 steps and back.
This is an easy way to build interesting percussion loops to cut up later that are a bit more varied than the usual Roland xox style grid allows.
I also will run this into Ableton Live to trigger various clips in a track which can yield very interesting results."

A Warning to Those That Post Their Content on the Internet

via copyright.gov:

"Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include —

(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;

(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors."

MATRIXSYNTH is a news site. If you don't want it covered, don't put it out there. For what it's worth I have only received two requests to take content down in the last couple of years, but two is too many in my opinion. If you put it out there you usually do so to be seen. MATRIXSYNTH usually helps with that unless for some bizarre reason you put it out there not to be seen. Again: If you don't want it covered, don't put it out there. Once it is posted and people comment and link to the content, it stays up. See Creative Commons for content control.

Arduino Drum Machine Step-Sequencer / Groove-Box

YouTube Uploaded by williamkalfelz on Jan 19, 2011

'For Version 1.0.4 we added 2 Step-Note Tracks for Bass and Synth lines. This is a short demonstration of 2 patterns playing both Drums and 2 Synth Lines.

Those two new tracks, S1 and S2, have Note Selection per Step, Note-Off and Slide.

http://arduino.wusik.com
http://open.wusik.com"

via Rugged Circuits

Details via kickstarter:
"The Arduino Drum Machine is a 14-track Drum-Machine Step Sequencer with 2 accent tracks and 32 steps. Check out the videos -- it's a lot easier to understand when you see it: [videos above]

The Arduino Drum Machine is like the classic Roland TR707 but with some twists, as it actually has 32 x 1/32 or 32 x 1/64 steps. The 2 note-step sequence feature allows you to do bass and/or synth lines -- it's a MIDI groove-box!

Here's a picture of the first prototype PCB: http://ruggedcircuits.com/images/adm_proto1.jpg

And here are some videos of the first prototype working with a Duemilanove:

http://youtu.be/t5THWALtiw4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8WoKL1BMRc

Once we get this prototype into Wusik.com's hands we'll post a video of the whole drum machine software+hardware working together.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

This project is a joint collaboration between Wusik.com and Rugged Circuits. We've taken the breadboard prototype of the drum machine shown in the videos and made it into a proper Arduino shield that plugs in on top of an Arduino Uno, Duemilanove, or Mega/Mega2560 (not included). The software performs all the drum machine functions, but you can always tweak it to do whatever you want (with the source code reward levels). We will provide sample source code at all reward levels showing basic usage of all hardware on the shield.

We've added EEPROM, FLASH, and expandability options and connectors. Suggestions from backers are welcome too (as long as they don't break the bank!)

And it's not just a drum machine: the hardware is a general-purpose MIDI development platform and playground. The awesome software from Wusik.com is what provides the drum machine functionality, but you can run any software you want on your Arduino to make use of the hardware.

Here are the project specs:

* Arduino shield (we're aiming for about 8" x 3") that plugs on top of an Arduino Uno, Duemilanove, Mega, or Mega2560
* 512 kbytes of FLASH (beyond what's on the Arduino)
* 32kbytes of EEPROM (beyond what's on the Arduino), expandable to 128kbytes by adding more EEPROM chips
* 16 buttons with LED for each button
* 8 buttons for control functions (intended for up, down, left, right, shift, play, stop, record)
* 16x2 LCD with backlight
* MIDI IN and MIDI OUT interfaces
* System operation at 5V or 3.3V
* Designed to be compatible with Arduinos as well as Netduino and FEZ Panda

The Wusik.com drum machine software provides:

* 14 Drum Tracks + 2 Accent Tracks (a total of 3 MIDI-note velocities can be sent from each step)
* 2 Step-Sequence Tracks (each step has its own Note selection, Velocity is set by the accent tracks)
* Multi Pattern and Song Mode
* Number of Patterns and Songs depends on the total amount of system EEPROM -- the base system provision of 32kbytes of EEPROM has enough for 99 patterns and 99 songs
* Each pattern has 32 x 1/32 or 32 x 1/64 steps and 14 tracks + 2 accent tracks
* Each track has a note-number and MIDI-channel number, so you can also use tracks to output regular notes (one note fixed per track)
* Optional MIDI echo

NOTE: International backers (outside the USA) PLEASE ADD USD$10 to your pledge for any reward levels that require shipping physical items (that is, $50 and up). These items will ship by US Priority Mail International and usually take 6-10 days to arrive (though it is not guaranteed). Shipping by courier companies like UPS or DHL is much more expensive but allows for shipment tracking -- please contact us for prices. Also please contact us for combined shipping prices for group buys and multiple-order pledges."
