Maschine 1.6 in Underworld's live setup

YouTube Uploaded by NativeInstruments on Mar 28, 2011

"Underworld are one of the most successful groups to emerge from the UK's rave scene, releasing records and touring the world for over 20 years. In this revealing video, the group's Darren Price invites NI into the studio to witness the performance of a new track for Underworld's live set, created in just one day using only Maschine 1.6."

Ski Beatz in the studio with Maschine 1.6

Uploaded by NativeInstruments on Mar 28, 2011

"For over 20 years Ski Beatz has been producing forward-thinking beats for the likes of Jay-Z and Camp Lo. In this video, the one time MPC devotee discusses how Maschine 1.6 brings a greater range of creative options to the table."

The Press Release:

"Berlin, March 28th, 2011 – Native Instruments today released MASCHINE 1.6, a major free update for its acclaimed groove production studio. With the addition of plug-in hosting for instruments and effects, the new version significantly expands the scope and functionality of the system. MASCHINE 1.6 also includes a free download of the new KOMPLETE ELEMENTS bundle, and adds a multitude of other new features for studio production and live performance.

With added support for VST and AU plug-ins, MASCHINE 1.6 profoundly widens its creative possibilities, turning the system into a full-featured instrument host. Both the whole range of KOMPLETE INSTRUMENTS as well as all third-party instruments and effects can now be used directly in MASCHINE, complementing its integrated sampler and FX features. Due to an "Auto-Mapping" function, plug-in parameters are conveniently pre-assigned to the high-resolution knobs on the MASCHINE controller, allowing for intuitive sound tweaking directly from the hardware.

To give producers an even more comprehensive sound arsenal on top of the sample-based factory library of MASCHINE, the 1.6 update also includes a free download of the new KOMPLETE ELEMENTS instruments and effects collection. Based on the powerful engines of KONTAKT, REAKTOR and GUITAR RIG, it contains over 1,000 production-ready sounds selected from the studio-standard KOMPLETE 7 bundle, including Abbey Road vintage drums, Vienna Symphonic Library orchestral sounds, an assortment of sampled band instruments, various REAKTOR-based synthesizers, a versatile assortment of amp emulations and effect pedals from GUITAR RIG and more.

Further enhancements in MASCHINE 1.6 include an increased number of effect slots, a new "Pad Link" feature, individual swing per sound, clip and sample renaming, expanded Drag & Drop functionality, support for up to 32 audio I/O channels, full Mac OS X 64bit support, and a wide range of detail optimizations.

The 1.6 update and the KOMPLETE ELEMENTS bundle are available as free download for all owners of MASCHINE.

Orgon Enigiser test

YouTube Uploaded by copenhagennoiselab on Mar 28, 2011

"Testing out an Orgon Systems Enigiser. This synth is an analog 1 osc synthesizer with quite extensive routing capabilities and many filtertypes. The sequencing is done with a Acidlab Bassline2. No effects at all, the overdrive is internal, just straight into the computer. I recorded this little clip as there is almost no videos of it online.

I don't own this synth. I have only acted as a courier and got to play with it before I sent it to the buyer. So no questions about the machine, please.

My music can however be heard at:

"hardware: arc4
software: electric dharma wheels

I received a production-run arc4 with the final firmware on Friday. This signaled a mad scramble to update my work for that and the latest serialosc with arc support so it'll be ready when people start receiving their units in a few days. So what do I do on Saturday? Make a new app, of course. Sure, that totally sounds like the responsible thing to do.

After receiving the arc4, I thought it might be a good idea to produce an example that demonstrates a 'bank' of encoder values that you can switch between. That gave birth to an application idea involving triggering modal notes from a pool of probabilities across three octaves of scale degrees. There is a separate bank of pitches depending on clockwise or counterclockwise rotation so you can shift the harmony with a simple gesture. The weighting of scale degrees is programmable and editable in real time on screen or with a MIDI controller. This allows for a more controlled structuring of compositional development over longer periods of time. The speed of the rotation determines how often a note is triggered, and can also be used as a modulation parameter for the FM synthesis engine.

Relevant synthesis parameters are also editable on the arc as the notes are triggered. The state of these parameters is overlaid on the LEDs, so interesting patterns emerge when this mode is engaged. There was a really awesome bug where switching editing modes also transposed the output modally, so I built in a score feature that allows you to advance a programmed chord progression with a button push.

A sit-the-arc-in-your-lap-and-doodle app has been on my mind a lot and I have at least three good starts in this area, but other priorities have often pushed these out of the way. The prototype arc2 I had lacked the mounting bracket for the USB cable and the logic board was floating free inside the enclosure, so I always had to use it (carefully) on a stationary, flat surface. It is really nice to have an arc that can be moved around or used in the lap. My cat disagrees.

I recorded this video, holocene, as a demonstration of this app, which I'm calling electric dharma wheels. This is the raw output from the electric dharma wheels, with some Eos reverb added after the fact.

Tensai rhythm machine, 80s boombox with drum machine

via this auction

"This is a really odd item, can't find any info about it online!?

So what i can tell you is: it's a 1980's boombox with built in analogue drum machine!

I've recorded the output here so you can get an idea of the presets:
http://soundcloud.com/maily/tensai-rhythm-machine

This device can also be used as a 2 track recorder, featuring a guitar and mic inputs.

I think this could make the basis of a really interesting circuit bend or just a super unique addition to the collection of a drum machine/ 1980's/ analogue recording enthusiast.

More photos here"

Update: some additional info via Jan:

"this boombox was also distributed in Germany under the "Lehnert" brand and was called the "Lehnert Studio-5000". My parents bought one in 1978 or 1979, I can't remember exactly. I tried to find more information about it and the company in the web a while ago, but alas no success. And my mother threw hers away some years ago…

More pics on [via this auction]

Judging from the German labeling with the correct Umlaut usage, and the more detailed description of the device's functionality on the lower left of the German front panel (compared to the English Tensai version), I assume that "Lehnert" might be the original (German? Austrian?) manufacturer.

More pics of the machine's guts: [link]

On [link] you can see the manufacturing date of the tape motor is 1977.

The 2 way speaker system sounded really nice, the rhythm section allowed pressing multiple buttons simultaneously to combine rhythms, the external input allowed to use it as an amp for my first synthesizers (Casio VL-Tone and Korg MS-20), and you could use is as a limited 2 track recorder. I had a lot of fun with it 30 years ago."

Mutable Instruments Shruthi 1

via this auction

"Here Is a Mutable Instruments Shruthi 1 Analog synthesizer kit. It has been hand built by a professional and has the latest firmware. This synthesizer is a monster! With all analog filters and envelopes with digital waveforms it makes for the perfect synthesizer. The OS is constantly being upgraded, adding new features and better performance. These are very hard to get, as they only make about 30 of them every 3-6 months. This has the included case and will be ready to play when you receive it in the mail. Buying this kit from me is a great decision because if you do not have the time or the skills to make it, you can be assured to still get a quality build without potentially damaging the kit.

"Fitted with pitch control, distortion, M-Z3R0 death industrial delay circuit with filter, rate and feedback controls, pitch LFO with rate and depth control and atari punk console square wave oscillator.

Modified to the extreme, this beast can kick out an unlimited amount of glitching, noise and mayhem.

it has loads of internal sounds which can be mashed up with the embedded circuitry i've added as well as merged with the APC square wave for dual oscillator tones.

I've used one of these for some time to create hundreds of drum samples and bizarre incidental sounds.

This is a machine you'll have a lot of time for whenever you require something a bit crazy to drop into your tracks. You could pull off an entire power electronics set using this machine alone.

Synthesis Technology MOTM E560 Deflector Shield

via this auction

"Overview
The E560 is another unique DSP-based module that has no equal in the modular world, in any format.

It is a triple-mode effects module: thru-zero frequency shifter, phaser and ring mod. What sets the E560 apart from other DSP effect modules is the unique carrier wave morphing feature. Traditional frequency shifters and phasers use sine waves as the carrier/modulator, but the E560 has 8 different carrier waves (sine, triangle, square, saw, 16-point random phase, 64-point random phase, cross-modulated triangle/pulse and 3x sine) that can be continuously cross-faded to create never-before heard soundscapes. The 8 carriers are specifically selected to give the widest sonic palette, from simple frequency shifts to 64-note ‘pattern sequences’ to extreme harmonic content.

Technical details
SHIFT: a frequency shifter than can shift thru-zero with 2 simultaneous outputs (DOWN and UP). Like traditional frequency shifters, a sine carrier will generate a smooth shift but the E560’s 7 other waves will generate a vast array of harmonic content and even patterns of evolving timbral shift.

RM: a standard ring modulator (4-quadrant multiplying VCA) with a twist: the 2 outputs are always forced into quadrature (90 degree phase shift). The 8 carriers can produce everything from tremolo effects to gating to high degrees of distortion.

PHASE: this is an E560 exclusive mode. The audio input is applied to an 8-stage all-pass network. The 2 audio outputs are in quadrature, but in turn phase shifted from 0 to 360 degrees relative to the input. Not only that, the ‘vector’ the phase shift follows is the data in the carrier wavetable. The phase shifting can be linear (saw wave), traditional (triangle) or bouncing all over the place (64-random phase waveform).

Not only do you have full control over the effect, but also the wet/dry mix and applying either positive or phase-inverted (negative) feedback. This introduces peaking at certain harmonics or cancellation of those harmonics. Applying a slow LFO to the Feedback CV can produce a wide range of constantly changing spectral content.

Measures and weight
3U Eurorack module.
Module width 14HP (70.8mm)
Module depth 32.5mm
current draw: 110mA (90mA @+12V line and 20mA @ -12V line)"

Creating the Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode) bass line via Oberkorn MK3 and Telemark Synthesizer

YouTube Uploaded by rezfilter on Mar 27, 2011

"...by request!

*Watch in HQ for best video/audio quality!

Here's a recreation of the classic bass line from Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" (Violator!) using DM-style methodologies.

By utilising a step sequencer and a flexible analogue synth (Analogue Solutions Oberkorn & Telemark respectively), you can produce the moving / transitional effects inherent in a complex bass sequence such as this one.

Given the timing of the pattern, the Oberkorn was MIDI-stepped manually (see Midi-Stepping an Analogue Sequencer video for more information) and the pitch transposition was handled via MIDI as well. Alternatively, the pitch could be played live via MIDI.

The key is to take advantage of the precise opening and closing of the filter via Oberkorn CVB.

All settings will ultimately be approximate, as analogue synths will differ from machine to machine. Use the settings as starting points and then tweak away!

Enjoy (the Silence)."
