WMD TEST LAB - Pedro Eustache
Published on Dec 1, 2017 WMDevices
"One of the best parts about being in this industry and going to trade shows is meeting the amazing people that use our products to make music. Everyone takes a different approach to using what we create and when we get to experience them making music in the flesh it's always incredibly exciting and inspiring.
Pedro is no exception to that truth. In fact, he pushes the boundaries on what we knew possible with a only a couple eurorack modules. A wind player by trade, you can hear his work on films like Wonder Woman, Passion of the Christ, Kung Fu Panda, and many more as well as see him live on tour with the Hans Zimmer live production.
He has over 100 different wind instruments (many of which he fashioned by hand) and is also a bit of an electronics nerd. His interest in electronics and synthesis led him to the Lyricon wind synthesizer, a vintage analogue piece of gear that is controlled by a proprietary controller. This controller is much like a common MIDI wind controller, only it produces Control Voltage instead of MIDI information. He worked with a friend to produce an interface for this controller to interact with his modular synth. He puts that together with the Synchrodyne, routes different controls to parameters on the module, and creates tones and timbres we've never heard...
He hit us up when he came through for his most recent Denver performance with Hans Zimmer and wanted to show us what he was doing with the Synchrodyne. We set up some cameras, Alex put together a quick patch, and the two jammed.
Be sure to watch till the end as Pedro explains the patch right around 13:00
This performance was recorded in one continuous take and marks the very first time Pedro and Alex ever played music with one another. No practice, no plans, just two humans and a couple machines."

"ULTRA RARE Seiko keyboard synthesizer! Its almost impossible to find these, let alone find one with all 3 components with the power supply. They only come along once every few years.... and then in pieces and/or not working!
When plugged in the keyboard springs to life and plays fine. There are a ton of switches, knobs, etc. some of which respond, others seem to do nothing.... but that could well be the operator just needs to know how to set up and work this sophisticated instrument... and I admit I dont!
The DS-310 lights up initially then goes dark, but when you push a button lights up again. Again this could be how its supposed to work?
The DS-320 lights up upon power and seems to respond as it should. Note: the battery holder inside the case has cracked but could be replaced. The exterior case is fine with no issues."

Volca Keys Ambient Jam with Specular Reverb V2

"I just got my GFI System Specular Reverb V2 and this was the first sounds that came out when I hooked it up to my Volca Keys. I loved the sound so much that I just uploaded it here.
I used the Zoom MS-70CDR just to add the delay, which you can clearly hear at the start. The Volca Keys' delay is so noisy, which can be cool, but doesn't sound great when combined with a high-quality reverb like this.
Please use headphones to listen to this clip - the stereo reverb is great.

FOTN - Synth Jam Vol. 1
Published on Nov 30, 2017 DJ FOTN
"To close off the year I wanted to do something quite different to my usual DJ sets, so for episode 019 of my Sound Flight Sessions radio show / podcast I've recorded a live Synth Jam of interpretations of music that has inspired me over the years.
The set is in three rough sections, section one is inspired by the computer game music from my childhood that initially sparked my love of musc, part two features music from the producers that first really got me into dance music (Paul Van Dyk, BT and Sasha) and then finally in part three I wanted to play some of the more modern music that is inspiring me now.
I've named this 'Vol. 1' as there were so many ideas and directions I could have taken this in that I'm sure I'm going to want to do another one!
There were a few issues with the cameras, some crashed, some stopped recording and the lighting is a bit crap but you get the idea :)
All of the music was performed live using Ableton and various outboard gear including my Moog Sub 37, Moog Mother 32, Roland Juno-106 and 303."
Fredric Effects Releases BugBrand BugCrusher Stomp Box
via BugBrand:
"It has been a while since I made BugCrushers, but I'd still get emails asking for the old Micro version. These would always poke my brain and get me wondering - I knew I couldn't head back to pedal designs due to production methods, so instead I looked around for someone take it on themselves and that's where Tim of Fredric came in. I provided him a slightly updated design of the Micro/WorkshopCrusher and he's now brought it into production - so do please support him and buy direct! Will I ever do another BIG BugCrusher version? I don't know for sure - I did try a couple of design attempts this year, but nothing quite stuck. It would be a good thing to have in the Red lineup though."
via Fredric Effects
"The BugCrusher is an Analogue Sample Rate Reducer - a Sample & Hold circuit run at audio rates - which produces aliasing effects on your signal.
With the Rate set high this imparts a clear fizzle & crunch, while at low rates any high frequencies will seem to wrap-around in an effect somewhat akin to a clean ring-mod.
Despite the name, the BugCrusher is not an actual BitCrusher - most BitCrusher effects will have Sample Rate (x-axis quantization) and Bit Depth (y-axis quantization) and are typically digital in nature.
Tom Bugs, the creator, says 'Back when I was making BugCrushers, they were well liked for processing synths & drum machines, but the effect also has found favour with bassists as the low frequencies can pass through cleanly while the highs are crunched'."

BugBrand StereoCompress Back in Production
via BugBrand
"Finally I have the StereoCompress back in production with the first new batch released today.Over the year since it was last available I've had people regularly asking for it - it is, after all, a very high quality master compressor with interesting features and a great sound - but I spent a good while investigating whether I could have the design fully built for me. In the end life has proved a bit too much of a juggle right now to take such a step, but I still learned a fair bit in the process. So I'm doing this again like all my other designs - having the PCBs & SMD work done externally and then building the rest up myself.
Go here:::: http://bugbrand.co.uk/shop"
"The Stereo Compress (equal stress on the COM and the PRESS) further rounds out the line of red processors with a supreme quality stereo VCA compressor providing the proverbial sonic glue or adding a healthy dose of smash to your sounds. Happy gently coaxing the stereo bus or punching individual instruments into shape, the circuitry springs from a classic of British compression but entirely rebuilds the internals while combining several new twists, and is presented in a package that demands deep discovery within the realms of transient shaping.
The Stereo Compress is best considered in two parts - see block diagrams:
Audio Section -
The audio path is kept minimal with high quality components for low noise operation. The left and right channels are identical, each featuring Balanced Input Buffer, Compression VCA (2164 quad IC), Dry/Wet Blend VCAs (equal power crossfading for parallel compression) and Output Buffer. The unit can be used as a single mono compressor (use either left or right side) or ganged stereo, with the side-chain feeds being tapped post input buffer.
SideChain -
The SideChain signal is taken initially as an equal sum of left & right inputs, but this sum can either be externally processed using Send/Return loop, or a different signal can be inserted. The Insert point is followed by Low and High Cut filters (12dB/Oct) allowing frequency dependent compression.
The SideChain processing is arranged around a Feedback VCA stage and contains rectification, ratio setting (2:1, 4:1, 10:1), fully variable Attack and Release time constants, and wide range Threshold and Make Up Gain controls. A Gain Reduction meter shows how hard the unit is being driven and features internal LED indication to show when the unit is Active (low red glow for bypass, brighter white glow for active - Animated GIF of the Meter lights)."

Percussa Super Signal Processor Eurorack Module PCBs Arrive
via the Percussa Kickstarter:
"Hi everyone!
Exciting news - today we received the PCBs for the SSP.
They arrived about an hour ago and I immediately checked the quality of the top and bottom side, paying attention to small details such as whether the vias are nicely drilled in the center of pads, whether copper has 'leaked' over other copper potentially causing a short, and of course whether the through-hole components of the PCB sit nicely in the holes of the footprints or not. One other important detail I wanted to check is whether I could reach the display connector on the PCB with the display flatcable, which needs to be fed through a rectangular slot in the PCB. I had already checked that a million times before I sent off the files for production, in my 3D modeling software, and I had also checked it with a paper print-out of the PCB layout, but it's always good to actually check it in reality when you get the PCBs back. I'm happy to report that everything is looking good (at least with the naked eye). Tomorrow I'll be doing a final check using my microscope, and then I'll be kitting the parts and a couple of PCBs, and sending that off to our subcontractor so we can get a few prototypes built for testing. As always I'll keep you posted about the latest news. Thanks again for backing!

Playlist:
1. SSF Ultra-Random Analog 1/5: Overview (LMS Eurorack Expansion)
The Ultra-Random Analog (URA) is a very different take on the classic Buchla 'Source of Uncertainty' module. It is designed to be the clocked centerpiece of a complex random system or patch. This first movie features a brief drone jam using the URA, and then demonstrates each of its major sections:
0:00 short drone demo
1:36 specs & background
2:03 overview of major sections
5:15 sample & hold A
7:02 sample & hold B
9:28 toggle A/B
10:09 R-Flux (smooth random)
11:23 R-Pulse (random gates)
12:00 opto-integrator
13:14 cross-patching
2. SSF Ultra-Random Analog 2/5: Sample & Holds (LMS EE)
This second of five movies on the URA module dives deep into its two sample & holds, as well as the Toggle A/B Out that alternates between them. It is a particularly good overview of those who may be new to the use of sample & holds in general. The video breaks down like this:
0:10 “sample and hold” explained
0:32 sample & hold (S&H) A to pitch
2:35 S&H A to filter cutoff
3:34 sampling an external input
5:51 S&H A to VCO mix
6:44 sample & hold B
7:30 S&H B slew
8:02 external clock
8:52 using the two S&Hs together
10:08 toggle A/B
11:34 voltage-controlled clock
3. SSF Ultra-Random Analog 3/5: Random Gates + Opto Integrator (LMS EE)
This third of five movies on the URA module dives into its random gates & pulses section, including the associated opto-integration which can be used to smooth out those gates or an external signal. The video breaks down like this:
0:00 overview (including internal clock vs. random gates)
0:59 gate density & pulse divisions
3:10 triggering envelopes
6:02 opto-integrator
7:17 integration slope
7:45 processing other voltage sources
4. SSF Ultra-Random Analog 4/5: Random Flux (LMS EE)
This fourth of five movies on the URA module explains how its smoothly fluctuating “R-Flux” section works, including external voltage control as well as using it to add randomness to LFOs and envelopes. The video breaks down like this:
0:00 introduction
0:15 default R-Flux output (including clock rate)
1:25 R-Flux Influence CV (speed of changes)
2:25 R-Flux Probability CV (voltage range)
3:15 adding randomness to LFO shapes
5:08 adding randomness to envelopes
5. SSF Ultra-Random Analog 5/5: Audio Rate Clock Tricks (LMS EE)
This final movie on the URA module demonstrates a few “stupid pet tricks” with its voltage controlled clock: using it as a second VCO; using it to generate pitched noise that tracks the keyboard; and using it as a sample rate decimator to destroy your sound (which again can follow the keyboard). The video breaks down like this:
0:06 using it as a 1v/octave VCO
2:11 patching in a precision adder for octave offsets
2:50 pitched noise source
3:48 sample rate decimator (SR reduction)
