"The ED116 Extended SH-Noise is the same circuit as the ED115, but adds flexibility providing manual settings for the Red/Blue content of the Violet noise source and Rate control of the Random noise source.

Noise Generator

White Noise: This module uses the noise produced by the base-emitter junction of an NPN transistor, which is reverse-biased. The noise is amplified to a level of about 10V peak-to-peak.

Pink Noise: The pink filter is a 3db/octave filter which is pretty linear across the range 10 Hz to 15 kHz to within 1db across the full 50db range. A final stage buffer-amplifier sets the output level to around 10V peak-to-peak.

Violet Noise: The violet filter has two frequency dependent elements in the feedback path. The first feedback element on its own would produce a 6db/octave rise in the gain of the amplifier from 0db at 0 Hz via 3db at 9 Hz to 20db at 90 Hz. the second feedback element on its own would produce a 6db/octave fall in gain from 0hz to 1khz above which the gain would remain constant at 0db.

The combined effect of these feedback elements is that below 90 Hz the 6db/octave rise and 6db/octave fall cancel out, giving a gain of 20db. Above 90 Hz the gain falls at 6db/octave to 0db at 1 kHz, above which it remains constant. The result being that the bass end of the noise spectrum is boosted and "colored" noise is available at the violet output. A final stage buffer-amplifier sets the output level to around 10V peak-to-peak.

Random Noise: The random noise output is a 12db/octave lowpass filter which passes only the very low frequency components to produce an extremely low frequency "random voltage". Fluctuations of the random voltage are displayed on an LED indicator.

By default, the random output is an analogue voltage with a nominal range of around 10V peak-to-peak. However an onboard jumper allows this output to be steered through a dual comparator to provide a digital output.

The digital-random output generates +5V output whenever the random voltage is greater than around +2V, a -5V output when the random voltage drops below -2V and a 0V output when the random voltage is within the range -2V to +2V.

Sample & Hold

The sample & hold section takes an instantaneous sample of the input signal and presents it to the out output. The resultant output is a "random voltage" that changes on each positive edge of the sample input.

The sample connector is normalized to the random output of the noise section while the in connector is normalized to the white output (an onboard jumper allows the user to change this to either the pink or violet outputs if desired) of the noise section. Inserting a jack in to any of these connectors will allow an external signal to be used instead.

Noise

Ever wonder what makes up the different types of Noise offered on synths? David Hillel Wilson, curator of the New England Synthesizer Museum and host of Synth Museum posted the following on AH. Title link takes you to the Synth Museum website.

"OK Here is the theory. White noise has every possible sine wave all at the
same volume.
Unfortunately, since the Human ear hears frequencies logarithmically, the
pure randomness
of white noise sounds high pitched to us. Since we hear twice as many
frequencies in any
octave as we do in the octave just below it, to create a noise that "sounds"
right requires
that the amplitude of the noise drop off at 1/2x per octave, or 3dB/Oct.
This is the definition
of Pink noise. Further low-pass filtering can make red noise, while high
pass filtering would
make blue noise. There are, to the best of my knowledge, no exact
definitions for colors
of noise other than white and pink. The "Color" idea comes from optics:
Light containing
all colors in equal strengths is seen by the Human eye as "white". If we
remove the higher
frequency (shorter wave length) lights, the color literally shifts to pink,
hence the name."

Circadian Rhythms

"a patch focused around the tiptop audio circadian rhythms (CR) as the heart of the system that provides the main clock source and triggers for events.

the programming was done on all 8 channels of the CR in 2x32 mode. fills are set to 16th note. mutes, fills and additional programming are performed on the fly.

patch basics:

CR ch 1: main kick
sound source is the blue lantern BDv4 going through the modcan frequency shifter.

CR ch 2: snare
sound source is the make noise mysteryon who’s pitch is being modulated by the mod can quad lfo who’s synced to the CR main clock output. the output was split into a separate VCA who’s being opened by the sound machines light plane and sent to the mungo d0 with macro machines storage strip. the storage strip is being sequenced by the CR main clock output.

CR ch 3: closed hat
sound source here is the SSF quantum rainbow blue noise.

CR ch 4: open hat
sound source is the SSF quantum rainbow white noise though the intellijel µfold and then a bit of delay from the synth tech e580.

CR ch 5: glass percussion as well as delayed bass and end melodic thing
glass percussion sound source is the noise engineering BI. pitch modulation from the tiptop z8000. delayed bass is an intellijel dixie square run through the cwejman res-4 and.end melodic thing is the harvestman piston honda MKII.

CR ch 6: chord bursts
this is the intellijel/cylonix shapeshifter in sequence mode then run thorough the qu-bit electronic RT60 reverb.

CR ch 7: tonal accents
sound source is braids in meta mode. also being sequenced by the CR and pith modulated by the tiptop z8000.

CR ch 8: sub kick
sound source is the tiptop audio BD808.

acidy bass: trigger source for the acidy bass is the intellijel metropolis that is synced to the CR via the clock output. sound source is the intellijel rubicon thats being FMed by a DIXIE sine, then put through the cwejman MMF1 in low pass.

tonal drones: trigger source here is the divided output of the intellijel metropolis into two make noise pressure points that have been micro tonally tuned. the sound sources here are synth tech e350 and make noise DPO that share a common mutable instruments peaks ADSR. the sounds are then processed through the serge resonant equalizer and tiptop audio zdsp with halls of valhalla reverb card.

hi plucked melody in mid section: this is the qu bit nebulae playing back a sample of mutable instruments braids in PLUK mode playing a melody sequenced on metropolis then fed to the mungo d0. the nebulae is then processed through flame FX6 reverb.

"The Grp Synthesizer was developed to offer the enthusiasts of analogical sound a more affordable synth in terms of price and dimension in comparison with the precursor model A8, without renouncing to the quality and performance that characterize our synths. Being featured with the same step sequencer used for the Grp A8, this synth is able to guarantee nearly infinite sound combinations due to the new characteristics which have been implemented in the instrument, with the possibility to filter out external signals and to manage all the important parameters of the analogical generation chain.

The A4 has been derived from an audio section of the Grp A8 (of which it takes over the structure) and it results more versatile and eclectic passing from smooth and extreme clean sonorities to harder sounds thanks to the two distortion installed in the synth (one for each filter) and due to the possibility to make interact synth, ring modulator, external signals and step sequencer in only on mechanism with an immense sonority power. Majority of LEDs have been converted to Blue
Circuit Bent with Rotary/Toggle switch LED interface added (more info below)
Functionally appears to be 100% working and was thoroughly, tested using built in diagnostics
Pretty good physical condition there are some nicks and scratches
also a small dent in the back right edge of the case

Record button has a Red LED

The beat LED between the 7 segment displays is a Blue/Red LED

Circuit bend interface has two dual Blue/Red LEDs

All other LEDs are Blue

Circuit Bent all Blue LED Roland MC-505 demo
Bend interface consists of 3 rotary switches, 2 toggle (on-off-on) switches, and 2 dual Blue/Red LEDs

Bends are stable and at worst from testing will cause whine which stops once switched to new bend or bend is turned off via toggle switch
Bend usually work best with single patch.
Many of the bends just cause chaotic 'noise' and may or may not be usable depending on the use
All parameter changes can still be applied to bent sounds, EFX, Cutoff, Resonance, Reverb, Delay, etc.
Bent sounds controllable via MIDI

Warning: rotary switches stop at each end attempting to turn knob past stopping point could damage control interface

Do NOT try to turn past stopping point (resistance can be felt)

How to use bend interface:

Toggle switches are used to turn on bends, rotary switches then turned to change bends

Top toggle switch control

UP position connects TOP rotary switch with Bottom rotary switch blue LED will be lit,
MIDDLE position is off (disconnected)
BOTTOM postion connect TOP rotary switch with MIDDLE rotary switch, red LED will be lit
Bottom toggle switch control

UP position connects MIDDLE rotary switch with TOP rotary switch blue LED will be lit,
MIDDLE position is off (disconnected)
BOTTOM postion connect MIDDLE rotary switch with BOTTOM rotary switch, red LED will be lit"

Comments About the Sounds:
its pre analog with a VERY strong filter, 3 oscilators, fuzz and distortion effects. there is no stepping heard in any knob movements either. its sounds like maybe an sh-101/ mc-202 with a little tb-303 mixed in.. its very early 80's monosynth sounding.. not weak like mid-80's polys were. very heavy sounding, with good quality. it's exelent for analog leads and bass's, but dont expect any real pianos or organs or whatever."

MODULAR SYNTH JAM #1 - Techno Patch

"The first in a series of patch / synth jam videos. We Vine (search DivKid and follow us if you use it) a lot but 6 seconds isn't enough to share a patch properly.

These will be really simple for some and more interesting for others so we hope you enjoy them.

Here's some patch notes:

Kick - Envelopes are triggered via a quarter note midi clock and is a sine wave from an Intellijel Dixie going through an Intellijel uVCA II. With another envelope going to the Dixie pitch to create the kick and thump.

Clap - is a Bubblesound uLFO running at audio rate with the shaped sine (if I remember correctly) going into the WMD Geiger Counter, pushing the pre-amp and wavetable processing.

Hats - these are the high pass noise output from the Blue Lantern Mr. Noise module.

Noise) the sequenced noise sound in the white noise output from the Blue Lantern Mr. Blue module going through a Bubblesound VCA4p with the gain amount modulated by the GinkoSynthese TapLFO (synced to midi clock) with the random output affecting the VCA gain.

Bassline - all 3 rows of the Make Noise Brainds and 2x Pressure Points combo going into a Mutable Instruments Braids. Top rows goes to Braids pitch (1v/oct) input with the quantizer on, second row goes to Braids Timbre modulation and third to the Braids Colour modulation. All the pressure points outputs pass through a Thonk At-At-At for attenuation. Braids internal envelopes are trigger automatically (Braids auto-detects pitch changes) which is affecting the internal VCA level. So Braids acts as a single voice all in one module. The Braids output goes to a SOB filter from Animodule then goes to a Doepfer A-199 Spring Reverb, which then passes into a Happy Nerding FM Aid. The FM Aid then goes to a Malekko Borg 2 filter. Braids also has FM modulation coming through a Livewire AFG with the FM modulation depth adjusted manually.

Each part is mixed together on a pair of STG .mix modules. And as you'll see there's a fair amount of manual wiggling going on.

"I wanted to use our still-new Doepfer A-118 Noise source in a drum pattern. This is the result.

Here's the patch:

The envelope generator on the Moog Rogue is set to auto-trigger itself.

The Audio Out from the Moog Rogue is sent to the Symmetrical input on the A-119 External Input, only to trigger its Gate output (the Audio Out on the 119 is not used).

The Gate Out from the A-119 is sent to a multiple, and from there to:

1. The Trig. In on an A-160 Clock Divider
2. The Gate In on an A-140 Envelope Generator

The /4 output on the 160 is triggering a Boss Dr. Pad (Snare 1 setting). The output from the Dr. Pad is sent to the mixer (off screen).

The /8 output on the 160 is triggering the first envelope on the A-143-1 Complex Envelope Generator (set to Attack-Decay mode) the output of which is opening the bottom VCA on the A-132-3 Dual VCA. The output on the bottom VCA is sent to a mixer (off screen).

The CP2 gate out on the 143-1's second channel (set to LFO mode) is patched to the CV In on an A-150 Dual Voltage Controlled Switch (here acting as a VCA). The output of the 150 is send to the mixer (off screen).

The triangle output from a Plan B ELF LFO is sent to a Frostwave Resonator's input, the output of which is connected to a Frostwave Blue Ringer. The Ringer's output is patched to the Input on the upper 132-3 VCA; the output of the upper VCA is sent to the mixer (off screen).

The White Noise output from the 118 is sent to the In 2 input on an A-196 Phase Locked Loop. The Phase Comp. Output from the 196 is sent to the first Input on the A-150. The second input is left unpatched.

The Colored Noise output from the 118 is sent to the Input on the bottom 132-3 VCA.

The first output on the 140 is opening the upper 132-3 VCA.

The second output on the 140 is sent to a multiple, and from there to:

1. the Low Pass Frequency CV In the Resonator
2. to an attenuator, and then to the CV In on the Ringer

I think that's everything. Two A-118 noise channels, one Dr. Pad channel and one M37-->filter-->ring modulator channel. Panned for stereo but otherwise no outboard effects used.

We just got a Doepfer A-118 Noise and Random Voltage module. It's great!!

In this patch, the Colored output from the 118 is being fed into a channel on the A-132-3 VCA. The Random Voltage output from the 118 is being multed and sent to:

A. the Gate In on a A-140 Envelope Generator (the output of which is opening the VCA)

B. the Trigger In on an A-160 Clock Divider (the /4 and /32 outputs are sending CV to the two halves of an A-150 Dual Voltage Controlled Switch, strictly for blinkenlights purposes)

C. the CP3 In on an A-143-1 Complex Envelope Generator (the Mix Out of which is modulating the Low Pass Frequency on a Frostwave Resonator)

The output from the VCA is sent to the Audio In on a Frostwave Resonator filter; the Resonator is sent into a Frostwave Blue Ringer ring modulator; the output from the Blue Ringer is sent to a mixer, and from there to the computer.

The audio sync is a hair off. Please accept my apologies.

We recommend the A-118. I'm already finding it to be more useful than I'd anticipated!
