Moog Grandmother Patch Tutorials
videos by Moog Music Inc
Update: Moog - Matriarch (Patch Diary) by Knobs added below.
Playlist:
1. Grandmother | 2-Op Analog FM Synthesis
This video explores how to achieve analog 2-operator FM synthesis using Grandmother.
In its simplest form, FM synthesis is a sound design method involving two oscillators, typically using sine waves, where one oscillator is used to modulate the frequency of a second oscillator in order to create a new timbre. Adjusting both the depth of that modulation and the harmonic ratio between the two oscillators can yield a wide array of different sounds, ranging from harmonic and musical, to inharmonic and alien.
While FM synthesis is most often associated with digital synthesizers, the all-analog Grandmother is capable of a wide range of FM tones by incorporating the filter and modulation oscillator as sound sources.
No patch sheets were provided for the following:
2. Grandmother | Randomized Filter Envelope Modulation
This video explores using Grandmother’s sample and hold circuit to create randomized envelope modulation of the filter.3. Grandmother | Envelope-Controlled Oscillator Sync
Sample and hold (S/H) is a classic electronic circuit commonly used in synthesizers that features a signal input, a gate input, and an output. In practice, a continuously variable signal will be applied to the input, then every time the gate input receives a gate, the circuit will sample the value at the input, send that value to the output, and hold the output at that value until a new gate is received. This allows for many different applications, such as generating a stepped-random voltage from a noise source, creating gate-synced modulations, transforming smooth LFOs into stepped waveforms, analog sample rate reduction, etc.
Grandmother’s S/H circuit is actually set up to always generate stepped random voltages; this means that Grandmother’s noise source is hardwired into the S/H signal input. The S/H gate input is normalled to the modulation oscillator; this means the random signal will always be in sync with the modulation oscillator, and also enables the modulation oscillator’s sync input to be used to gate the S/H for synchronized movement with your playing, arpeggiations, or sequences.
Random voltage is a very powerful tool on a synthesizer, and can help to add some movement and surprise to your patches.
This video explores how to achieve envelope-controlled oscillator sync effects using Grandmother.4. Grandmother | Building Sequences Live
Oscillator sync is a very unique feature found on synthesizers with two or more oscillators in their voice architecture. It’s a process where one oscillator’s period (a single cycle of the waveform) is used to reset the period of a second oscillator. This imposed synchronization results in the synced oscillator taking on more complex waveforms as it’s forced to share the same base frequency as the oscillator it’s synced to, creating a distinct, harmonically rich, and almost metallic timbre.
Moog has a long history of featuring oscillator sync on our instruments, with the 1979 Moog Prodigy still being known for its especially great-sounding oscillator sync timbres. Grandmother takes things a step further by allowing for extended sync functionality via the incorporation of patch points, offering classic Moog tone, while also opening up new pathways of exploration.
This video explores creative approaches to building sequences live using Grandmother.
Grandmother features an analog step sequencer capable of storing three sequences, each containing up to 256 steps. Typically when building sequences, users will enter sequence data while the sequencer is stopped, allowing you to add each note/rest/tie/accent step by step. Sequences can also be edited in real time by flipping the MODE switch to REC while the sequencer is running and pressing keys or the LHC buttons, overwriting any previously stored sequencer data.
This demo looks at how to use the sequencer to first establish a sequence length and create a metronome for yourself while the sequencer is stopped, and then build a sequence on the fly as the sequencer is running. This approach can be a nice way to incorporate improvisation and spontaneity into your writing process, and not have to think too much about planning out your sequences.

tELHARMONIC Harmonic Algorithm
Published on Aug 6, 2015 MAKEN0ISE
"For the Harmonic Algorithm, H-OUT, each of the three voices is a 24-partial harmonic oscillator, using
high-resolution sine wave generators. The timbre is varied by the CENTROID and FLUX parameters, with CENTROID
setting the loudest of the 24 harmonics, and FLUX setting the steepness of the gain roll-off around that center
harmonic. When FLUX is full CCW (0% modulation) the spectrum is flat and sweeping the CENTROID will ripple the
spectrum (like a string harmonic). When FLUX is increased, the harmonics surrounding the CENTROID decrease in
amplitude and the sound becomes more focused upon the center harmonic, which causes modulation of the
CENTROID to have a more dramatic effect.
When FLUX is not set to 0%, a trigger or gate in the H-LOCK input, or a press of the H-LOCK button, will cause the
partial that is currently selected by the CENTROID parameter to be locked ON at full amplitude even after
CENTROID changes. By sequencing CENTROID and Locking harmonics, many additive timbres can be found. Press
and hold the H-LOCK button for 1 second, or set Flux to 0% via panel control or CV, to clear all locked harmonics.
This parameter affects all three voices of the H-OUT, but does not affect the P or N OUTs."

Roland Juno-6 (with Juno-66 Tubbutec mod) VCF audio rate modulation by Moog Matriarch
video upload by MIDERA
"My friends and I lamented the fact that my Juno-6 Juno-66 mod was not entirely completed, in that it does not have access to the LFO shape functions. One of my friends suggested sending the S/H OUT from the Matriarch into the VCF input in the Juno-6. So... I did, and then switched it to WAVE output and... well, this is the result of that.
The Matriarch LFO goes into audio rates and it brings the Juno-6 into new territory. Not only can I access S/H LFOs, but audio rate manipulation. I can also sync the LFO manipulation if I use the Arpeggio sync input in the back of the Juno.
At some points I do utilize the Tubbutec mod with its power arp (i.e., sequencer). Also, the voices are all slightly detuned. Enjoy the noodling.

Patchblocks Launches minijam studio Kickstarter Campaign
Exploring the tek.drum Published on Apr 2, 2017 Patchblocks
Kickstarter campaign here.
"Mindflood Ltd., the company behind the Patchblocks brand, was founded back in 2013. It was a result of the academic research of Sebastian Heinz, the founder, CEO and CTO. During his research he developed the idea to Patchblocks and brought it to a prototype state, which ended up to be the content of the first Kickstarter campaign (12/2013). This became one of the most successful synthesizer campaigns on Kickstarter.
In 2014 Sascha Goetz, an old high-school friend of Seb, joined the company as co-founder and started to take care of the all operational tasks. From then on Patchblocks were promoted heavily on key trade shows and many events all over Europe. That allowed the team to build a global retail and distribution network, as well as extending the Patchblocks product line. Those extensions are the Midiblock (2015), which enables connectivity with MIDI equipment and the Keyblock (2016), a miniature Midi Keyboard, which can directly be connected to the Patchblocks.
Besides the new minijam studio (details below) there was also a brand new 3-channel mixer added to the product portfolio. PBMIX3 is a battery powered, portable audio mixer with send and return chain.
For the minijam, the project team was extended by Filip Vandueren (Sounddesign), Andy Wilson (Engineering), Gnichi Mohamed (Engineering) and Carsten Bellan (Design consultant).
The company currently has its main office in Holywood, just outside Belfast, Northern Ireland.
minijam studio
The project started in early 2016 with the idea of creating something that still follows the Patchblocks philosophy in terms of accessibility, affordability and fun. Feedback from customers and retailers pointed to something more hardware, less software. The result was not just one single unit, it ended up in a whole product line, which combines a lot of different studio hardware in a small size.
minijam is based on the idea of what happens when you boil down a hardware studio or live performance setup to very compact and affordable products. Maybe compromising pro-features, but not compromising the enjoyment of noodling and jamming with such machines.
The studio includes a drum machine, a wavetable synthesiser, an analog filter, a mixer and a speaker. It gives you the feel of jamming with hardware equipment, all bundled in a ready-to-use set with impressive sound.
Each device is powered by a rechargeable battery and can be used standalone or as part of the set. You don’t need any software or mobile phone. The mixer keeps all connected devices synchronised and also allows for the integration of other hardware with it’s sync triggers on the second channel of the stereo connectors. (e.g. Pocket Operators, Volcas, etc.)

Richard H Kirk: A tribute to his music and legacy
video upload by CatSynth TV
"We pay tribute to the pioneering electronic musician Richard H Kirk, passed away on September 21, 2021. He was a member of the group Cabaret Voltaire, whose mix of experimental electronics and dada sensibilities was very influential in the 1970s, and work in the 1980s combining electronics and pop elements influenced industrial music. Kirk continued to record and perform as a solo artist from the 1990s onward. He reformed Cabaret Voltaire as a solo project in 2009.
We send our thoughts to his family, friends, and collaborators."

===
Introductory video. Lots of talking and discussions of strategies and usage in systems.
Be sure to use the navigation/progress bar to jump to sections of interest for repeated viewing and pausing. I left many snapshot/screengrabs up for only 5 seconds as the video is already quite lengthy and one can easily pause upon what one wishes to see in greater detail.
More in the way of actual use coming up in next videos. I'll show it in my 24-panel system and then either my 10-panel or 4-panel (currently out on loan). We'll go through the pages that are served up by the WPM, etc.
Answers to a handful of likely questions:
Q: How does it work?
A: It is a WiFi server and serves up (currently) two web pages that are accessed via a web browser. I've tested it on a Mac, iPad Pro, iPhone6s, and my ancient iPhone 3GS. The 3GS renders the main page strangely (fault of the browser due to its age and lack of updates) but it does work. Any cheapo Android should work and Studio.h have tested a few of them.
Q: Will it work with v2 (non-Primo) 200e systems?
A: Yes, there is a switch for this shown at 01:37
Q: Is it possible to change the log-in information?
A: Yes, the WiFi name and password can be changed. I'll demonstrate this in the next video. There is also a switch, at 1:37, showing that the system can be made entirely 'Open'. Live dangerously!
Q: Will this enable preset management of my 208 variant?
A: No. None of the 208 units are e-series compatible. They simply don't have the hardware onboard for e-series knob positions, slider positions, patching, levels, etc.
However, for the Easel-K owner, you've just level-upped your 223e!
Q: Will it coexist with existing Buchla Preset Managers (206e/225e).
A: Yes, as shown in this very video plus the leveraging of Preset Management Strobe Mode. See 04:00
Q: How much does it cost? How do I order one?
A: $400 USD and drop Studio.h a line on: http://studiohsoftware.com/contact
Bravo, Studio.h!"

Moog in the mid sixties as a less bulky, more affordable alternative to the famous experimental RCA Mark 2 (which filled several rooms), it became the instrument that made synthesized music popular, especially thanks to Walter Carlos' album "Switched On Bach", a massive hit in 1968. Other artists, like Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Emerson, Lake & Palmer also explored the possibilities of the Moog in mainstream music and even used it for live performances. But the modular systems were generally too complex and expensive for most musicians, designed as they were for studio composition of electronic music, and Moog went on to produce more performance oriented instruments such as the brilliant Minimoog.
System 1 consists of 2 cabinets.

2. How to make ambient music with LIVEN Ambient Ø
3. Layering tones with LIVEN Ambient Ø
Press release follows:
Soundscape Synthesizer LIVEN Ambient Ø Immersive Ambient Generator
4 layers of tone and texture̶Drone, Pad, Atmos, and Noise̶merge to generate resonance and transformation.
Blendwave Modulation Synthesis
Newly developed synth-engine with 6 structures, designed to create undulating and fluctuating tones.
Noise and Space
The Noise layer processes 8-second stereo sampling loops with noise blending and pitch modulation.
Extensive Effects Section
9 types of lush Reverb with shimmer, plus 6 types of effects including Tape Delay and Master Chorus.
Sequencer on Each Layer
Records performances, notes probabilities, and evolving tonal changes.
Immersive Ambient Generator
Ambient Ø (zero) is incredibly easy to use. Start by playing a tone from one layer using the note hold function. While listening closely, simply tweak the knobs to modify the tone and add other layers to shape a pleasing sound.
Blendwave Modulation Synthesis
We conducted extensive research into creating undulating and fluctuating tones for Ambient Ø, resulting in the development of a new wavetable-based synthesis.
Blendwave Modulation Synthesis combines 6 unique structures with 32 WAVEs featuring complex harmonic transitions, making it easy to create powerful low drones, lush pads, and transparent pizzicatos, perfect for ambient music.
4 knobs / 8 parameters offer a wide range of tone creation.
A WAVE contains 128 harmonic tables, allowing for diverse tonal changes such as moving from basic waveforms to complex harmonics. The WAVE is
represented by a yin-yang icon, with the yin representing moves in the reverse direction through the tables during modulation.
6 Structures
Each structure has a different number of oscillators and modulation circuits. ATMOS 1 applies ring modulation, while ATMOS 2 applies FM modulation.
Noise and Space
The Noise layer includes 8 specially selected nature sounds, offering noise blending, pitch adjustment and modulation to infuse unique spatial characteristics.
Additionally, it allows for up to 8 seconds of stereo sampling from the line input, letting you create personalized textures.
Extensive Effects Section
Ambient Ø is equipped with 9 types of lush reverb, each offering unique spatial dimensions and brightness settings. You can individually adjust the reverb send and shimmer send (for layering octaves) for each layer.
In addition to the reverb, the Ambient Ø offers
an effect unit with Tape Delay, Reverse Delay, and 4 master effects; Overdrive, Bit/Rate Crush, Tilt EQ, and Stereo Chorus.
Sequencer on Each Layer
You can not only layer the four tones, but each layer also includes a sequencer that allows you to record keyboard performances.
Furthermore, you can record changes in numerous parameters, including level, pan, and filter movement over time.
16 Ambient Sound Pattern Palettes, crafted by expert sound designers
No need to start from scratch. Choose a palette that fits your mood, start playing tones, tweak the knobs, and layer them following your heart. Thus, your inner thoughts and emotions will be crafted into sound.
Play On The Go: Portable, Built-in speaker, and Battery-powered
Leave your usual workspace and try using Ambient Ø in your living room or outdoors. As its evolving sounds mixes with the surrounding environmental noises, you are likely to experience genuine Ambient Music.
