50th Anniversary of the Moog Modular Synthesizer - Details on the Emerson Moog Modular Clone

Published on Oct 11, 2014 Moog Music Inc

"October 12, 2014 marks the 50 Year anniversary of the unveiling of the Moog modular synthesizer at the Audio Engineering Society's (AES) New York convention. On that day in 1964, Dr. Robert Moog introduced the world to a completely new type of instrument that would go on to change the course of music history and influence decades of future instrument design. Told by a Moog engineer, Moog Historian, and Bob Moog himself, this mini-documentary explores Moog Music's quest to resurrect the original methods, materials and designs used in the foundational modular synths. Through recreating Keith Emerson's modular system, Moog Music rediscovers the power, elegance, and enduring legacy of its first instruments.

"Moog’s 1:1 Recreation of Keith Emerson’s Modular Synthesizer shown at AES ‘14

Asheville, NC, October 11, 2014 — Tomorrow, October 12, 2014, marks the 50 Year anniversary of the unveiling of the Moog modular synthesizer at the Audio Engineering Society's (AES) New York convention. On that day in 1964, Dr. Robert Moog introduced the world to a completely new type of instrument that would go on to change the course of music history and influence decades of future instrument design.

The Moog modular synthesizer was comprised of individual electronic modules, housed in a wooden frame, and it made use of voltage-control as a new way of creating powerful sounds that had never been heard before.

After its debut at AES, the scientific-looking Moog modular instrument that made extraordinary new sounds with rapid alterations and exotic tonal colors, started to gain in popularity. Musicians began to establish the Moog system as the archetype of synthesis. One of the earliest and most famous artists to adopt the new instrument was Keith Emerson, keyboardist for the innovative band Emerson Lake and Palmer. Touring the world for over forty years with this unique instrument, Emerson has made his Moog modular system the most recognizable synthesizer of all time.

The 50th Anniversary of the Moog Modular is a historical landmark for musical instrument design and popular music. In celebration of this momentous occasion, Moog Music has faithfully and painstakingly recreated Keith Emerson’s Moog modular. This new Emerson Moog Modular System (EMMS) utilizes original design material and parts to duplicate each facet of Mr. Emerson’s custom instrument down to the smallest detail. The modules in the EMMS are built exactly as the originals were in the Moog Factory in Trumansburg, NY in the 1960s: by hand-stuffing and hand-soldering components to circuit boards, and using traditional wiring methods. Today, Moog also released a mini-documentary featuring a Moog engineer, a Moog Historian, and Bob Moog himself, that explores Moog Music's quest to resurrect the original methods, materials and designs used in the foundational modular synths.

"It's a dream come true for us to bring back these instruments that our company is so known for, and to make them visually and sonically perfect. It's even more perfect that exactly 50 years after the first Moog synth was shown to the public, people can come to AES 2014 and experience the new Emerson Moog Modular System," said Brian Kehew, Moog’s Historian.

This towering recreation of the world's most recognizable synthesizer will be on display in Moog booth 1028 at the 137th AES convention in Los Angeles, CA through Sunday 10/12/14. It is the first time the Emerson Moog Modular System has been shown to the public since it’s unveiling at Moogfest 2014.

Of the 5 Emerson Moog Modular Systems Moog will build, only 1 remains available for sale. The price is $150,000 USD. To inquire about purchasing the last remaining Emerson Moog Modular System, contact Steve Maass at Moog Music. 828.251.0090 ext. 205 or email steve.m@moogmusic.com. Serious buyers only please."

SynLimb live modular set as aired on modular.world Ep 3 (June 13 2020)

"Live modular performance with our SynLimb arm-prosthesis-to-CV hack. I've been practicing a lot and am slowly getting there. The modular is sequenced by the Winter Modular Eloquencer in the first half; I then transition to the Toraiz Squid. It was a lot of fun to play this in our living room. Thanks to my husband Daniel for filming. This was aired on modular.world on June 13 2020 with a Q&A afterwards:"

eowave instruments modular to be shown at Modular Square

"June, Saturday, 4th:
Integration of modular systems into digital platforms with Eowave Eobody3 for Modular
Back from the NIME 2011, Eowave will stop at ModularSquare's to present their new Eobody3 for Modular. These new modules open the world of modular systems to different protocols like OSC, MIDI, USB, DMX... to control your modular systems with your IPad without any computer or to control your software with your modular system.
www.eowave.com/modular.php
info@eowave.com"

"With Eobody3 for MODULAR, Eowave has developped a range of modules (eurorack format), which offers a real bridge between modular systems and other protocol devices. With a choice of 6 modules to control modular synthesizers directly with USB, MIDI, sensors, computer, Ethernet (OSC), IPhones, IPads, lights and vice versa… Eobody3 for MODULAR is the missing link between the modular world and today’s technology. It’s now possible to control modular synths parameters with softwares, to control softwares with modular synths… You want to use your IPhone as a controller for your modular synth? No problem! While most of IApps only offer digital sounds modular synth simulations, we've chosen to take IPads control possibilities to take advantage of all technologies.

Eobody3 MODULAR modules are working with the module EO-300 Eobody3 MODULAR CORE. Then, add the module of your choice depending on your needs"

Raul Penas Modular Wild

via Raul Pena (videos below):

"Hello All. This is Raul Pena.
Just wanted to announce a new business venture I have begun which may be of interest.
Its called Modular Wild. There are two parts to this new project. The first involves a new weekly Video Show featuring Eurorack Modules. The show was designed using feedback from my Raul's World of Synths Video tutorial series.

Five different type of segments to the show: PROFILE (a segment featuring a brief overview of a given module or topic), SOUNDS(a segment featuring video demonstration(with only text narration, for those who don't enjoy talkies), PATCH IT (an extended segment creating a complex patch using at least 6-12U of modules, lots of patch cables afoot, with narration), FEEDBACK(a segment based on questions and/or comments from viewers), and last but not least MATHS MINUTE(a segment dedicated to the Make Noise Maths which features a different patch from the manual done in under one Minute!). I spoke with Tony from Make Noise prior to completing a significant group of these videos to ensure no infringement occurs but did secure the Maths Minute title as a copyright.

The second part of my new venture is the business side. I will also be available for producing video demonstrations for manufacturers, private individuals,or anyone else who thinks they could utilize my video services.

Details on this available on my website raulsworldofsynths.com or modular wild.com. They are now one and the same site but each have separate Youtube channels. Any questions or comments please get in touch.

I also have released a new CD soundtrack for my new show as of yesterday. I will be using the proceeds from this cd to offset the cost of the upcoming productions, equipment, maintenance, etc.Basically also a nice way for those who wish to show their support for Raul's World of Synths and Modular Wild.

Here's the iTunes link.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/modular-wild-sounds-from-rauls/id577850941

Going forward I will continue to release Raul's World of Synths Videos (as long as I am able to do so) on thursdays, and one weekly episode of one of the five segments weekly (not one of each a week, maybe if I was doing it full time :), but the segments will rotate and demand will have an effect on which segments stay and which go, if any.

That should do it. Hope everyone finds some benefit to this. Thanks to all the wigglers here and everywhere else.

Super excited about this new project. Thanks.
All the best."

Upcoming Sound Labs at Amsterdam Dance Event Oct 14 - 18

Workshops at this years' Amsterdam Dance Event currently include Moog, STEIM, Ginko Synthese, and Falafular Synths. Details follow.

ADE Sound Lab: a modular synth heaven

"The modular synthesizer has always been an integral part of dance music, and ADE Sound Lab will shed a light on its heritage during a three day modular synth bonanza.
If you're planning on visiting ADE Sound Lab make sure to grab the annual ADE Card, which allows you to access MusicTalks and live performances.

Modular synths have been on the rise of late. Their new found popularity boosted the modular market in unforeseen ways. The market has spiked like never before, and there are ever more and more musicians, artists and producers making their own modular set up in search of unique sounds and machinery.

ADE Sound Lab focuses on the history and heritage of synths by inviting sound designers, inventors and even some legends of the modular world to inspire you with talks, workshops, performances and a Modular Market. By exhibiting the latest inventions in (modular) synthesis ADE explores the realm of the development of new electronic instruments, (modules for) modular synthesizer systems and audio installations, as well as innovations in the field of image and visualisations of sound. Amongst other work, ADE Sound Lab introduces the Modular Expo.

Do It Yourself Synth Building Workshops
You can not only play around with existing modules and modular systems, but you can also build your own synthesizer. ADE Sound Lab offers several Do It Yourself workshops, some free of charge, others for a fee. The latter will ensure you can take your brand new, playable synth back to your home studio.

Moog’s Chris Howe will head the workshops on Thursday and Friday. Friday will see a workshop that will be led by STEIM - Hypothetical Instruments, which will focus on the future of electronic music, what instruments will be needed and how we will correspond with those yet-to-be-invented modules. On Saturday, the DIY Workshop will be hosted by Ginko Synthese who will let you build your own synth with their very own DIY kits. They’ll even let you make a case to harness the instruments. Falafular will host on Saturday. If you like to learn more about prices and workshop registration, keep a close eye on our website and the respective event pages.

Workshops
Moog Werkstatt by Chris Howe (Moog Music Inc, US)
Werkstatt Workshop provides a way for synth experts and novices alike to explore subtractive synthesizers. Through hands-on instrument modifications, participants will learn the fundamentals of subtractive analog synthesis and the control voltage paradigm. Analog synthesizers have long had their own maker culture born of curious engineers, physicists and hobbyists who have created and crafted their sounds through electronic experimentation. It is our goal to share our love for learning, music, and electronics by encouraging everyone to create the world they want to hear, one mod at a time.

STEIM - Hypothetical Instruments
In this workshop you can design machines for creative expression. Working with low and no-tech, you’ll build non-functional instruments aimed at inventing the music machine of the future. By taking as a starting point how an individual imagines the experience of playing electronic music, we will spend the afternoon making the perfect machine or instrument for that person. This process is directly informed by the designers and researchers from Native Instruments, Johannes Kepler Universität and STEIM, with the goal of making instruments that are positioned on the bleeding edge of technology.

Ginko Synthese
Ginko Synthese, the braindchild of Jan Willem Hagenbeek, aims to close the gap between the stage and the studio. At ADE Sound Lab they will be presenting easy to build cheap DIY kits. The components are available at a reasonable price. The popularity of these kits is currently spreading across the world fast, meaning that a lot of new user codes are becoming available almost weekly. You can use these modules as granular oscillators, wavetable oscillators, drum synths and even as clock sources just by uploading a different code.

Falafular Synths
Falafular is the SDIY brand that enabled Falafelbiels (Niels Kloet) to build himself a fabulous modular synthesizer. The ’S’ in SDIY stands for soldering, and Niels Kloet will show you the nit and grit of Do It Yourself synth building.

ADE Sound Lab is organised by ADE, in cooperation with Creative Industries Fund NL, the Dutch fund that offers sound pioneers and innovators an opportunity to demonstrate what they are working on, as well as helping them to develop their talents further in a 'hot house' environment.

ADE Sound Lab
Dates: Thursday Oct. 15 - Saturday Oct. 17
Time: program starts at noon
Venue: Compagnietheater
ADE Sound Lab is a free program (except for the ADE MusicTalks series and live performances, free for ADE Card holders, also accessible for 1 & 5 Day conference ticket holders)."

"An analog synth composed of modules

Eight modules

The volca modular is a semi-modular synthesizer consisting of independent analog synth modules, digital effects, and a sequencer. Each of the modules has been carefully selected for its stand-alone completeness. The modules are internally connected so that sound can be produced even before connecting the included pin cables, and the routing is shown by white lines on the panel. Module connections via a pin cable take priority over the internal connections, bypassing them.

SOURCE:

This consists of a triangle VCO carrier and a modulator. The complex overtones generated by FM modulation are sent through a wave folder circuit to add additional overtones, producing a distinctive sound. This module is important in determining the basic character of the sound of volca modular.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!!!  I hope 2012 treated you well and I wish you the best in 2013!

As I do each year, I thought I'd reflect a little on the past year.  These posts are always difficult to write, and I always wing them, so bear with me.  It's impossible to justify a whole year's worth of synth coverage in a single post.  The following is just a small bit of what comes to mind when looking back.  You'll find a top ten list of posts with the most page views followed by my picks for the year further below.  Apologies if I miss anything, and of course, if you have anything to add, feel free to leave a comment below.  I'm curious what you, the readers of the site, felt stood out in the world of synths this past year.

First, I want to begin this post with a HUGE THANK YOU!!!  If you are reading this it obviously means you have come to this site and some of you have been coming here for years! Thank you for sticking with me. This site is a journey I hope to continue for years to come. Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to showcase their synths, and thank you to those that share what they find! Thank you to those that link to the site and help spread the word on MATRIXSYNTH via Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and your own websites! And of course, THANK YOU to all the sponsors on the right who believe in the site enough to support it!

A nod to previous New Years posts, pictured to the left is the MATRIXSYNTH world domination map. :)  I always think it's worth taking a look at who's watching the site.  Synths are global and you are looking at a map of the readers of MATRIXSYNTH.  Everything you see in green represents a visit from that country.  The darker the green, the higher the number of visits.  This is just for the year, but for the life of the site, we still haven't gotten a single hit from North Korea!   I don't know what they have against synths!  ;)   You'll find the top 10 visits by country further below.

This is the eighth New Year the site has gone through!  The focus for the site this year has been the same as previous years, and I plan to keep it that way.  This site is about showcasing specific synths, not just synths in general, and not just news and press releases.  The focus is on the individual synths that have existed throughout history, the technology behind them, and the lives they lead with their odd owners, myself included.  :)  Yes it is about the gear, their makers, and their players.  It has always been my opinion that synths in general have a tendency to be undervalued. Compared to say collectible guitars, they are often discarded and devalued in favor of next year's model, next year's technology.  It has always been my opinion that every synth has something of value to offer,  something specific and something unique that gives it its character. I built this site to showcase that.  This site is about the history of synths as their history unfolds - videos and images of synths being played and used, by both those that make them and those that play them.  Vintage synths being offered in the second hand market, being exchanged from one sonic explorer to the next. It really is a wondrous thing. Think of the magic synthesizers bring into your world. That is what this site is ultimately about.  Some posts may not seem to make sense now, but they will in time, because they will be a look back in time. A day in the life of a particular synthesizer.  I love analog and I love digital. I love all synths and this site celebrates that.

And now for a little reflection on the year. This year we had a total of 16678 posts including this one.  That comes out to roughly 45.69 posts a day.  Not a single day of the year went without a post.  So what dominated the synth year?  Mobile, modulars and a few dedicated hardware synths.

New Roland Demora, Scooper, Torcido & Bitrazer Eurorack / Desktop Modules Leaked

Update: Pics & additional details on Demora, Scooper & Torcido added below along with a new pic of the System-1m.
Update2: System-1m details added below.
Update3: New System 500, video, press release, details on Bitrazer, and higher res pics added below.

[Initial post - updates below:

Two quotes via Analog Industries:

"Details of the long-rumored Roland Eurorack modules leaked today, ahead of the Musikmesse announcement. In a nutshell, four 21HP DSP-based stereo effects units (delay, distortion, 'scatter' effect, and bitcrusher/filter) with both 9VDC and Euro power connectors on the back, along with USB for Aira connectivity, and the ability to live as a desktop unit. $299 each."

"I will say one thing: these will be a powerful gateway drug, as they will be a much less threatening introduction to the platform. But for the real Euro user, they miss the mark by a country mile. What a waste of the biggest and best R&D department in the industry."]

Radikal Technologies DELTA CEP 1.6e Firmware Update

"Radikal Technologies takes DELTA CEP A paraphonic semi-modular synth several steps further forward with free firmware updates

MÜNCHEN, GERMANY: cutting-edge sound specialist Radikal Technologies is proud to announce availability of the latest (Version 1.6e) firmware update for its illustrious DELTA CEP A paraphonic semi-modular synthesizer — serving up nine essential synthesis ‘modules’ melded together to form a potent yet straightforward starting point to the ever-widening world of the Eurorack small-format modular system — that builds upon its impressive feature set with several significant additions, free for existing owners…

Its introduction earlier this year to widespread critical acclaim saw Radikal Technologies’ DELTA CEP A living up to the PARAPHONIC-MODULAR wording boldly blazoned across its feature-packed front panel. Pushing its cutting-edge sound-specialising creator’s product lineup to the forefront of the ever-widening world of the Eurorack small-format modular system, the deftly-designed DELTA CEP A can function as a standalone synthesizer or — when removed from the chassis — a 68HP-occupying Eurorack module forming the centre of a powerful modular voice. Whichever way it is brought into play — purchasable as a desktop paraphonic semi-modular synthesizer or Eurorack paraphonic semi- modular synthesizer module, the DELTA CEP A is the perfect starting point for any modular user.

Today, the DELTA CEP A paraphonic semi-modular synthesizer represents an even more potent force in the ever-widening world of the Eurorack small-format modular system, thanks to extensive firmware updates, culminating in Version 1.6e, that build upon its impressive feature set with several significant additions, as follows.

Firstly, Radikal Technologies has helpfully seen fit to expand the DELTA CEP A’s already powerful FX section above and beyond the giveaway (FX: 1. TAPE 2. DELAY 3. CHORUS 4. PHASER 5. FLANGER) wording highlighted on that feature-packed front panel to additionally include a stereo reverb algorithm. As such, it is now perfectly possible to add stereo reverb to those tape, delay, or chorus effects, for instance. It is also perfectly possible to morph those new reverb parameters as well with the INTERPOLATOR section — certainly separates the DELTA CEP A from the Eurorack pack! Put it this way: with this sound-stimulating section, users are afforded an ability to store so-called ‘snapshots’ of sound creations into the DELTA CEP A’s internal memory; moreover, users can consequently play those snapshots sequentially, creating cool sonic sequences. Saying that, they can cleverly create smooth transitions from one snapshot to another, allowing for some stunning sound morphing effects!

Excitingly, the LFO 1 section can now be assigned to different modulation targets without having to use any patch cables; creatively, this allows for assigning the LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) modulation to multiple targets simultaneously with independent modulation depths for all targets. That said, the ADSR section’s envelope generator can also now be assigned to different modulation targets without having to use any patch cables; creatively, multiple targets can be simultaneously controlled with independent modulation depths. Deeper still, the INTERPOLATOR section’s already powerful morphing function also benefits from those new routing capabilities since internal routings can be morphed! Musically- and sonically-speaking, users can now explore a whole new dimension of dynamic soundscapes.

So, having installed its latest firmware updates, how do discerning DELTA CEP A users access those welcomed additional parameters? Pressing the SHIFT button locks the SHIFT function to more easily enable additional parameters; its associated LED (Light Emitting Diode) flashes until the SHIFT function is unlocked again (by pressing the SHIFT button again).

Additionally, the MOD input in the MIXER section now controls the volume and saturation of the SWARM OSC signal; speaking of inputs, the SYNC input in the LFO 1 section now performs perfectly and allows for synchronising the LFO to another LFO or the GATE signals. (Holding the SHIFT button allows access to the note values of the LFO with the SPEED knob.)

Needless to say, the DELTA CEP A now reacts to MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) program changes, but be careful; if it receives a program change while the user is editing a sound, any changes to the sound will be lost.

Last, but by no means least, thanks to the latest (Version 1.6e) firmware update, it is now possible to share presets directly between two DELTA CEP A paraphonic semi-modular synthesizers. So what else can Radikal Technologies say? Not much — other than concluding that its illustrious DELTA CEP A has taken several significant steps further forward, courtesy of a rigorous regime of firmware updates. Ultimately, then, the DELTA CEP A ships with the latest firmware, which existing users of course can access and install for free.

The DELTA CEP A is available for purchase — priced at an RRP of €899.00 EUR/$999.00 USD (Eurorack) and €1,198.00 EUR/$1,298.00 USD (desktop) — through Radikal Technologies’ growing global network of authorised dealers.

For more in-depth information and access to the latest firmware updates, please visit the dedicated DELTA CEP A webpage here: https://www.radikaltechnologies.com/delta-cep-a-2/ (Existing DELTA CEP A owners can download the latest firmware updates for free.)
