Fissure 💔 (Hapax 2.0 // Perfourmer Mk2 + H9 + Pill // TR6S // LXR02 // JU06 + Deco v2)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"February 2024, back to the 2-Minute format! (well actually it was a 4:30 jam with a bridge, an outro with different chords etc. but had to justify a bit the name of the channel I think 😅)

This jam is built around a 10-step pattern from the Hapax sequencing the Perfourmer (through the H9 reverb and Pill ducking pedal, triggered by a GATE track from the Hapax). To make this 10-step pattern which drives the whole track sound a bit more complex, I made it play with 3 different voices of the Perfourmer (this is one of the main reasons I bought a Perfourmer a few years ago!). Hence each note is playing a voice with a different oscillator. So it's a 10-step sequence where the oscillators are being played in round robin mode each 3 notes. To make it even more spicy, I also used the Hapax's real-time RANDOMIZER MIDI effect which is transposing some notes randomly!

For the PERCUSSIVE parts, we are in a more classic mode with the main DRUMS being played by the TR-6S and the secondary DRUMS by the LXR-02 (both still sequenced by the Hapax).

And the BASS, is being played by the JU-06A through the DECO v2 pedal."

Synthetic Sound Labs Announces Soleil String Synth Pod & Modulation Orgy 2.0

Details on each follow. Check with the dealers on the right for availability.

TABLE-TOP MIDI STRING SYNTH POD ANNOUNCED

Inspired by the early vintage synths of the ‘70s such as the Elka Rhapsody and ARP Solina, the Soleil POD is a tiny low-cost Lo-Fi MIDI String Synth table-top box.

Capable of playing 4 paraphonic notes with 2 oscillator ranks per note. Waveforms are continuously variable from thick sawtooth thru variable pulse widths for more reedy sounds. The second rank is detunable for lush pads and honky-tonk riffs.

The Soleil contains built-in modulation / vibrato LFO, the depth of which can be controlled by MIDI. Attack and release envelope times are individually adjustable and share a single VCA making this a “paraphonic” instrument. A gate output jack allows convenient triggering of external effects and synth equipment, and its state is displayed by an LED.

MIDI is input via a 3.5mm TRS Type “A” jack, and responds to keyboard running status as well as pitch bend and modulation. An LED MIDI displays MIDI activity.

MIDI channel defaults to channel 1 but can be easily reset to other channels using a unique sequence from your controller keyboard at power-up, which is retained in non- volatile memory.

A fine tune control allows accurate tuning to other instruments, and an output volume control is provided. MIDI, Gate Out and Audio Out are standard 3.5mm (1/8”) jacks.

Power is supplied from a user provided +8 to +18 VDC 2.1mm coaxial jack, center positive power source, and draws extremely low current.

Quality, solder masked, fiberglass-epoxy printed circuit boards and meticulous hand- crafted assembly assure years of trouble-free service.

Synthetic Sound Labs has been in the analog synthesizer business since 1973. The Soleil Pod is the newest in SSL’s continuing line of outstanding analog synthesizer devices.

Pricing is $179.95 US and is available off-the-shelf from SSL and Distributors Worldwide.

UPDATED LFO MODULE ANNOUNCED

Just over 10 years after the release of its popular original 2260 Modulation Orgy LFO, Synthetic Sound Labs have recently released an updated and improved version.

The new 2261 Modulation Orgy has completely reimagined firmware that includes improvements such as waveform morphing and random wave slew. The new module width is now only 8 HP (half the width of its 16 HP predecessor) and is available with either black or silver faced panels.

DETAILS

The 2261 Modulation Orgy is a unique Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO) that offers unmatched modulation flexibility. It features both manual and external voltage control over LFO Tempo (speed), tempo Multiplier, Waveform and Waveform Distortion.

Eight Waveforms are produced, including Sawtooth, Ramp, Rectangle, Triangle, Sine, Sweep, Lumps and Random with morphing between adjacent waves. Waveforms may be further modified using the Wave Distort controls.

A front panel button or external Sync input allow synchronization to precise multiples of the musical beat permitting timed vibratos, tremolos, and clocking of external sequencers and sample & hold type devices. Multiple 2261s may also be cascaded to provide complex polyrhythmic modulation patterns, which is aided by use of the Clock output jack. The Clock output also serves as a powerful input clock multiplier.

In conjunction with the Multiplier controls, LFO Tempo (frequency) is adjustable from approximately 0.1Hz to about 50Hz in six overlapping tempo ranges.

The external Level CV input responds linearly and is normalled internally to +5V so that with no input, the 2261 outputs are at maximum. This convenient input can frequently save a separate VCA when doing voltage-controlled modulation depth.

A panel LED / push button shows the LFO output rate. Knobs are conveniently placed and top quality 1/8” jacks permit smooth, effortless patching.

Quality, solder masked, fiberglass-epoxy printed circuit boards and meticulous hand- crafted assembly assure years of trouble-free service.

Synthetic Sound Labs has been in the analog synthesizer business since 1973. The 2261 is the newest in SSL’s continuing line of outstanding analog synthesizer modules.

Pricing is $250 US and is available off-the-shelf from SSL and Distributors Worldwide. Silver panel – Model 2261S. Black panel – Model 2261B

Superbooth 2023: Tiptop Audio - 296 Spectral Processing Module & Cables

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Gur Milstein from Tiptop Audio at Superbooth 2023, where he showed us their recreation of the Buchla 296 spectral processor module. The 296 has 16 bands, each of which have three bandpass filters, which are extremely narrow and amplified so it's not your typical EQ, but rather a sound design machine with all those inputs and outputs and its internal cross modulation for vocoding and beyond.

296 Spectral Processing Module Available: Summer 2023

Price: TBC"

Superbooth 2023: Tiptop Audio - Art - Polytip Cables

"We met with Gur from Tiptop Audio to find out about their latest project called Art. Art produces a signal they’ve been working on for over a decade that fixes the tuning problems of Eurorack systems. With Art, they can link multiple modules together and play polyphonically. This led them to develop discrete polyphonic synthesizers that can be built from separate oscillators and filters, and they also revived the Vortex 6, a fully polyphonic module which is a clone of the PPG wave 2.0 with 8-bit converters from the '80s and has six built-in oscillators. Vortex 6 can use their newly developed cable, the Polytip cable, to patch the audio out from the Vortex 6 into the audio in of the octopus filter.

With the Polytip cable, they can patch up to eight signals that carry all the signals, such as the eight filters, eight envelopes, and six VCAs of the modules. This opens up a whole new world of sonic possibilities and Tiptop are continuously working on this project and plan to release more modules that use Art in the future."

Bengal by Max for Cats - Version 2

video upload by max forcats

https://www.ableton.com/en/packs/bengal/
A free update for Bengal and Live 11 users.
Bengal 2.0 adds MPE and small usability enhancements.
Max for Cats crafts Software Instruments, Effects, MIDI devices, Sound Design and Samples for Ableton Live.

Combining the textural intricacy of FM with the freeform approach of a modular system, Bengal is a sound designer’s dream with its four operators, eight voices of polyphony, six audio effects and a flexible modulation architecture centred on an interactive virtual patchbay.

Bengal is a semi-modular synth, meaning that although its component modules (operators, filters, etc) are all fixed, they can be patched together in a huge range of configurations in the giant Patch panel at the bottom. Connect square output sockets to round input sockets by dragging virtual patchcords between them – it couldn’t be easier. Bengal is also eight-voice polyphonic, so it’s just as at home blasting out huge chords as it is one-finger basslines.

Serious FM

Each of Bengal’s four operators generates its waveform using a bank of 20 editable sine wave partials or a wavetable – over 40 are included, and external samples can be imported by dragging and dropping them directly into the GUI. Independent ADSR envelopes with Curve shaping and optional Looping are also in place for every operator, along with Feedback controls for really making them scream. The modulator/carrier routing is chosen from a selection of six FM algorithms, giving access to a variety of sonic starting points right out of the gate.

Dual filters

Bengal gives you not one but two multimode resonant filters. Filter 1 offers a choice of five switchable types – Moog-style ladder Lowpass, regular Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass, Notch and Comb (with adjustable bipolar Feedback) – as well as Drive and wet/dry Mix controls for dialling in analogue-flavoured saturation and parallel processing, respectively. Filter 2 can be placed after Filter 1 in the signal flow or fed in parallel with it, and morphs smoothly between Lowpass, Bandpass, Highpass and Notch types.

Wild at heart

Modulation is key to Bengal’s architecture and sound. Running from 0.1Hz to speeds in the audible range, the two LFOs serve as regular parameter modulators or additional FM sources, while both the six-segment Breakpoint envelope and ADSR envelope can be looped and curved. The eight-step sequencer’s no slouch, either, outputting MIDI notes or modulation data, and featuring scale snapping, swing, and randomisation of pitch and velocity.

For even more movement, Bengal’s four Modifiers let you mess with its modulation signals in various ways, including smoothing, scaling, applying mathematical functions, and four-way mixing. There are also six audio effects onboard – reverb, delay, distortion, chorus, limiting and stereo widening – for processing and polishing prior to the final output.

Patching playground

With more than 50 modulation source parameters and 60 targets available, Bengal makes assigning the two easy and creatively rewarding with the Patch panel. Simply drag virtual cables from sources to targets as you see fit – each connection point can accept multiple cables at once, so you can really go to extremes!

via this auction, also on Reverb

"Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 with gligli upgrade in full working condition. Amazing sound and the v2022 gligli firmware update turns this 600 into a hefty Prophet 5 contender. More routing options, more LFO and lfo routung, Prophet 5 type envelopes, "rebounce" that prevents double triggering, more stability, better tuning and so much more! The overlay on the left side of the data membrane panel is for gligli 2.0 but will send a manual of the v2022 update that explains all the routing, operation and execution of all the v2022 functions... that said, most of the text on the 2.0 upgrade is still as it is stated."

Sequential Prophet 5 / 10 Rev4 - Promethean Vol 1 - first 40 Custom Patches Vid 1 of 2

video upload by Orano Music

"Finally I got around to creating a bank of 80 sounds for the stunning Prophet 5 / 10 rev4 Patches available at https://www.orano.co.uk/shop

This is the first 40 sounds in the pack. Next 40 will be on Reel 2 of 2.

And yes I used the arp from the Trigon-6 a couple of times, I understand the P5 / 10 doesn't have an arp, but it lets you all hear how certain plucks etc will sound arpeggiated. :)

To keep the Preview / Demo Videos as honest & transparent as possible, I have used only chorus and a tiny bit of reverb. If a video with effects would be preferred, just let me know and I'll repost with decent amounts of Chorus, reverb & delays etc.

This was put together by popular demand, and a custom bank I was unsure if I would ever do. The Prophet 5 / 10 was always a hesitant buy for me, due to it's mono output, but boy was I wrong, and I am so glad I took the plunge and grabbed the Prophet 10! this synth has got to be one if not the best synth I've ever owned, it is remarkable! This is the first P5 / 10 custom pack from me but most certainly will not be the last! :)

The bank (which has ended up a labour of love), is one where I didn't go searching to see who and what songs the synth has been used in, but a custom bank of sounds that came straight from the heart and head. The pack is full of Gorgeous Pads, Emotive Keys. Fat and Funky Basses, Leads, Plucks, etc all full of analog goodness!

The bank has been freshly baked using the latest firmware 2.0.4 which adds some amazing features to the P5 / 10 rev4! more control with aftertouch and velocity, Q Compensation which thickens up the higher resonant sounds (similar to bass compensation) adds a nice bit of punch!

Please ensure to have 2.0.4 (or higher) on your P5 / 10. to take full advantage of these great new features!

Hydrasynth Manager 2.1 Tutorial

ASM adds features and functions to perennially popular Hydrasynth range with major (2.0) firmware update available for free

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA/HONG KONG, CHINA: creativity-sparking sensational products provider Ashun Sound Machines (ASM) is proud to add features and functions to its perennially popular Hydrasynth range — comprising the original Hydrasynth keyboard and Hydrasynth desktop, announced to widespread critical acclaim in September 2019, followed by the flagship Hydrasynth Deluxe and portable Hydrasynth Explorer models announced in September 2021 — with a major (2.0) firmware update available for free as of March 15…

As an appealing appetiser, ASM’s major (2.0) firmware update adds three more memory banks to the Hydrasynth keyboard, desktop, and Explorer models, matching the Deluxe’s existing eight banks for a total of 1,024 patches. Put it this way: all are cutting-edge digital wave morphing synthesizers that positively invite their respective users to get involved in designing sounds, so more memory makes sense. Speaking of sound design, each Hydrasynth oscillator — OSC 1, OSC 2, and OSC 3 — now includes a new BitRedux (bit reduction) parameter that allows users to choose between OFF, 16, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 bits.

But — given that the 2.0 firmware update readily ranks as a major one — there is more, including more modulation options, thanks to a new modulation source called VoiceMod (voice modulator) that allows users to offset values for each voice that can then be applied in the Mod Matrix to vary chosen parameters per voice. Digging deeper, all five envelopes — ENV 1 through to ENV 5 — and LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) — LFO 1 through to LFO 5 — have new Quantize options, so adventurous users can quantize their outputs to achieve unique stepping effects. Excitingly, now it is possible to choose to advance through the steps with each new note on with the LFOs in Step mode, meaning users can play through the steps one by one with each new note press.

For flexibility in the studio or at home, Hydrasynth’s version 2.0 firmware update also allows users to bypass each of the (Pre-FX, Post-FX, Delay, and/or Reverb) effects globally in the system page — to record a dry signal without having to edit each patch, in other words. Thanks to the 2.0 firmware update, Hydrasynth users can choose how the sustain pedal operates. The three options available are: Sustain — traditional sustain (as it has always worked), Sostenuto — press and hold a single note while playing notes above it, and Mod Only — disables the sustain function, allowing users to then route it in the Mod Matrix.

Meanwhile, mention must briefly be made of other added features and functions, to include: Arp range expanded to six octaves; new Arp Step Offset parameter; Bank selection from browser window; ability to randomize all steps in LFO Step mode; new display Dim, On/Off options; Glissando mode added to Glide options; fine control for more subtle options offered by Vibrato; and Local On/Off status recalled (with in-screen reminder). As ASM CEO Glen Darcey duly concludes: “We hope you like the new features in 2.0. I would ask that you download the manual; there are some good tips and tricks on each of the new features and functions in there.”

Buchla 259 | Episode 02 | Playing the Oscillators

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"In episode 01 I started with the Main/Principal oscillator. But a complex oscillator also has a modulation oscillator. In episode 02 I am going to focus on the 'dual oscillator' side, which could be useful for anyone with two VCO's in a case. The original title was 'surfing the oscillators' because it's inspired by a @vgermuse Todd Barton live improvisation from 2012 where he actually played the 259 on instinct, just fiddling knobs. Part one of the video is music from the actual recording: https://soundcloud.com/user7621213/bu...

Playing the oscillators by hand is possibly the most fun and gratifying experience with your modular. Just have a big reverb nearby! So I hope you have FM inputs to play with. I am saving the modulation/FM bus for episode 03 and I may finish the series with a 'build your own complex oscillator with anything you can find'. In this episode I am also revisiting the Furthrrrr Generator with the 'strong zero' core. I mentioned that the digital core may not be the best choice if you're looking for an analog 259 experience but this does not mean it's bad. It's quite the opposite.

We'll stay in complex territory this month. Next up will be a Cosmotronic Vortex video because all the material I shot for this series deserves a separate item. If all goes well, I'll have a Cs-L video planned and finally a Lubadh 'reel life' episode with 2.0 firmware. So plenty to study and hopefully something to look forward to."

Quick guide for LIVEN Lofi-12 v2.0

video upload by ChrisLody

"LIVEN Lofi-12 v2.0:
https://sonicware.jp/pages/liven-lofi12

● Chopping
Two new voice modes called ‘Drum’ and ‘Chop’ auto-slice samples easily with the newly developed Downbeat Divider*. Sliced sections of a sample are then spread across the keyboard making finger drumming possible.

● Resampling
Patterns and tracks can be resampled by internally recording the audio output into a new sample. Real-time resampling of your keyboard playing is also possible.

● Remix Effect
A beat repeater effect ‘R.MIX’, added to the master effect options, makes glitchy real-time performances possible.

The new features are designed to work well with each other so you can easily create drum tracks with auto-slicing and record lively performances that are not constrained by the grid of the internal step sequencer. You can also resample samples and tracks for infinite effects processing and even build your own beats and kits ready to be sliced up in the Drum and Chop modes.

The new features in version 2.0 will further expand your creativity!

*…Downbeat Divider is an auto-slicing function that divides the entire sample into equal portions of equal length by setting the length of one beat. Set the length by the [VOICE] ADJ. It can be set from 0 to 255 for a maximum of 1 second. The default is 0.5 seconds at 167.

PLEASE NOTE: The new Drum sounds I describe were revised shortly after the video was finished so are available as individual samples rather than a bank. Therefore the upload procedure is not the same as shown at the start of the video. Sonicware has provided an update guide for the firmware and new sounds so please refer to that for guidance."

Serge Modular Paperface 2.0 - Rhythm & Stealth

"Exploring the rhythmic side of the Serge Paperface easel - Serge's 2022 redesign of the original 1st generation Serge synthesizer from 1973. Single take recording."

See the Random Source label below for more.

HELIOS

"The Serge HELIOS is a powerful voice panel that brings the raw Paperface oscillator sound to a new level and is the ideal basis for both tonal and experimental sound explorations. Serge's redesign of the 1973 VCOs adds temperature compensation and exceptional tracking over 6+ octaves. The Oscillator+ adds an PULSE OUT with pulse width modulation.

The voice panel comes built and calibrated in a superslim boat and is designed to be powered externally (e.g. with a mobile PSU) - PSU not included."

TEMPO DI ROMA

"TEMPO DI ROMA offers a unique combination of sequencing, programming, switching and logic, that brings Paperface to a new level. The classic GATE sequencer is no longer alone - two 4-step programmers that are also sequencers (with HOLD, RESET, UP/DOWN) can be run independently. Serge's new metronomic Clock is a precise, temperature-stable analog tempo source that can bring any of these sequencers to life. Three Bi-Directional Switches allow complex combinations of the Sequencers (or even audio signals). The bottom switch is special: it includes a Flip-Flop so that with the first trigger, the Switch is turned ON (and stays ON), until another trigger turns it OFF again. An additional FLOP output is also added. Last not least the panel contains a PEAK&TROUGH section. With logic signals, PEAK (max function) acts like an boolean OR, TROUGH (min function) like a boolean AND. However, PEAK&TROUGH can also be used with audio signals or CV.

The sequencer panel comes built and calibrated in a superslim boat and is designed to be powered externally (e.g. with a mobile PSU) - PSU not included."

PARIS-FLASH

"The Serge PARIS-FLASH combines the key Serge modules of the Paperface era, especially slopes and envelopes, into one panel. While it may look like a system primarily designed for CV-Control, it is equally strong in the audio range.

The slopes panel is to be released in SPRING 2023 and will come built and calibrated in a superslim boat and is designed to be powered externally (e.g. with a mobile PSU) - PSU not included."
