1. Grainmakers Playlist Introduction

I've been working on a huge video over the last few days and when I reached 30 minutes I decided to break it up into a playlist. This is cool! I can make updates and add new modules as they emerge. It's not supposed to be the ultimate grain guide, but it's cool to hear all modules chew on the same sample and hear what comes out. It's easy to be impressed by a bad module with a great soundsource, or underwhelmed by an amazing module that need to process something unworthy of its grains. So it all comes down to what they have to offer. And there are no bad modules. It's great fun to hear how a standard concept can turn into completely different experiences. So this is just a short playlist introduction.

In this episode, Beads needs to chew on a reference performance.
Beads is an effect, but it can process an internal wavetable synth on its own.

Loopers are often confused with granular synths, especially with the Morphagene. Loopers don't grain or spray, they're digital tape machines.
Sometimes, when you think you're into grains, you'd actually been looking for a looper. It's time to show the difference, so they're an important addition to the lineup.

6. 1010Music BitBox MK2 | Grainmakers Playlist

The BitBox may not seem an obvious choice for granular processing, but if this playlist were a competition, then BitBox MK2 would be the King of the Grainfields. Granular processing offers limited CV support in the current firmware, but the sheer processing power is almost an insult to the other modules. Fortunately, it can't offer the hands-on experience like dedicated modules.

8. Melotus Versio | Grainmakers Playlist

It's a Versio. What can I say. Awkward, special, amazing and breathtaking. It's unique feature is no pitch control. While this sounds like a flaw, it's almost a musthave feature when you run notes, effects and chords through it. Don't touch the melody. Just make it grain. Top 3 module in my list. And if it doesn't fit your needs, install a different firmware! If you own a different Versio, give it a shot. Nothing creates techno atmospheres and backdrops like Melotus.

9. MISO Cornflakes | Grainmakers Playlist

This is the last one for today :). Still a few more modules to cover, but it's already a great list. Here's MISO Cornflakes chewing on the Lexer piano. Again, it's a totally different experience, because Cornflakes adds special harmonizing features and stacking of grains. No other module has it - as far as I know. It can make wonderful new sounds from something familiar.

I already made plenty of Arbhar videos, but this is the second V2 video. In this playlist, all granular modules in my collection need to process the same audio file so it's easy to figure out what they do. Now it's Arbhar's turn.

11. Clouds & Clones | Grainmaker Playlist

This playlist would not be complete without a tribute to Clouds, one of the first modules in Eurorack that brought grains to the case. Clouds was launched in 2015 and discontinued in 2017. But that wasn't the end of it. It's been revived and extended in many forms, making it one of the most successful modules in Eurorack even today. From a techical perspective, Clouds is no match for the modern grainmakers in this playlist. But from the perspective of production value it's still a super useful module, especially if you manage to install the Parasite firmware. It's easy to forget that granular synthesis doesn't need big buffers. Sometimes a small 1 sec buffer is exactly what you need to get that desirable classic granular stream.

12. Combinations | Grainmaker Playlist

I got a question if Lubadh and Mojave would make a good combo. I had no idea. I figured this whole playlist is still 1-dimensional. So I patched these two up and then and I just had to make this video! I am still using the reference track so you get a good idea of how big the sonic playground becomes when you combine any looper with any granular engine. Results may vary, but wow. The bottom of the Rabbit Hole simply has a doorway to the next one. And it always gets deeper than the one before.

13. ADDAC 112 | Grainmakers Playlist

I may have unintentionally kept the best for last. The 112 combines a looper and granular engine in one big module. This is the last entry in the playlist.
The 112 will return soon for a dedicated video with some carefully selected samples to play with.

14. I missed a few | Grainmakers Playlist

After finishing the 112 video I was confident I covered enough 'grainmakers' in this playlist. I doublechecked if Disting EX and Phonogene should be in it, but no. The third one definitely needs to be on it! It doesn't show up when you search for 'granular' on ModularGrid, but it immediately went to my personal top #2.

Nice Condition, overall very clean!

This is a classic of FM synthesis. This edition of the DX7 has the pretty, cleaner sound of the MKII as opposed to the grittier sound of the original MKI.

I would say the sounds are also more powerful than the MKI.

I just installed new batteries in all 8 modules - they are metering 3.3 Volts

This one is loaded with 8 banks of my favorite sounds.

Sounds from the Yamaha VRC Collection, SoundSource Super LA D50/D70 collection, and various other carts I have owned over the years.

I consider these patches to be of high caliber, I cannot guarantee that you will like all 256 sounds but there are lots of great ones.

Fully Functional. I have been using this as two large 4 DX7 Synths for years. I like to route these to a mixer and mix between 4 sounds each to create 2 huge sounds."

The Matter II was sequenced by a synced XAOC Batumi (LFO) into Doepfer A-166 (Logic) and a Befaco Muxlicer (CV-Seq/Switch). That's all..

Processed by an Elysia Nvelope 500 (to emphasize the clickyness), Karacter 500 (stereo widening) and a bit of EQ and compression. Reverbtail from Eventide H9 (Shimmer) through Strymon El Capistan Tape Delay."

Yamaha CS-80 Blade Runner 2050

"This track is using sounds only from the Yamaha CS-80, an iconic analog synthesizer from the late 70s. Vangelis used it a lot for the soundtrack to the original Blade Runner movie and it appears Hans Zimmer used it as well for the 2049. This track is produced and composed by www.firechild.se using the Yamaha CS-80 as the only soundsource. Additional effects include the AVID Revibe Reverb, Oakley SE-330 Ensemble Chorus and Oakley Human Voice which give a choir like sound when feeding it with pure sawtooth waves. This piece of music is an original composition but of course inspired by the mood and vibe of the original Blade Runner soundtrack. Listen in big speakers for the best sound experience. Yes, you read the title correct.. I connected a pot lid to my modular system, cookin' up some ambient tunes :)

Really, I have no idea what I am doing but it is great fun :D I recently got the Mutable Instruments ears, and also today bought a KORG CM-200 contact microphone to be able to add acoustic elements and textures for processing in the modular.. now this calls for a pot session right ? :)

Ears gets the audio signal from the CM200 microphone, which in turn sends audio to the MI rings, strumming is being done on a random fashion with the 2hp Turing Maching using a clock in maths.

1v/Oct in on the RIngs is quantized with the penrose, which has LFO in from the tides, on a slow rate.

/Odd/ channels from rings goes straight out to 1U mixer mixer, the other /Even/ goes into the morphagene which is in sound on sound mode and plays back everything it hears in reverse .. + some glitchy stuff.

Braids soundsource (drone) Maths is controlling the filter on the uVCF which the braids goes into.. . and the Ripples filter is in serial controlled by the second maths channel plus retriggered by the gate out from MI ears.

everything then goes into the EQD pedals + Keeley engineering reverb for FX treatment.

Oh, and at 03.55 I am humming/singing one note drones into the pot lid (now there is a sentence you don't read that often) .. none of the camera angles captured it, but this is what you hear if the sound sources might be a bit confusing :)

Booom, and be careful the track is very dynamic, listen to it on moderate volume the first time.. :)"

How did it all started?

It started with the idea to build a Lunetta style synth (a synth based on digital logic chips (mis)using them for creating sound, a creation of Stanley Lunetta, therefore the name). For me it is also appealing to have the devices very compact (the KORG Volca series gave me lots of inspiration here), so I defined a small module format (about 10 x 2.5 cm). I liked the concept of abusing electronic parts, which gave the project it's name (AE: abused electronics).

Over the time I felt the wish to add this or that 'conventional' module, like Filter, Envelope, VCA, and one by one I ended up building a "standard" modular synthesizer!

What's special?

Compared to the usual Eurorack Modular Synths, we have some differences here, mainly to get a small form factor and cutting the price:

Modules are not Eurorack compatible

The Oscillators module is not working in 1V/octave standard (due to the roots in the Lunetta approach); but a 1V/octave VCO will be added soon to the modules palette

Patching is done via simple patch-wires and small pin-sockets (not minijack-cables as in the eurorack-world); this cuts the cost drastically and also saves a lot of space on the module. Another advantage: Module outputs are mostly dual or triple, which makes "Multiples" modules obsolete

Generally, AE modular follows the "not-so-perfect" approach; circuits are sometimes simplified and show their own character in some points - it's intentionally a contrast to the high-polished stuff we get from digital synths / DAWs / plugins. But always the usage as an artistic tool is considered!

The design style is also a little special: The frontpanels are not (expensively) printed, but rubber-stamped; I like this somehow "unperfect" look - I hope you too! (Don't worry: a special, durable color is used.)

What's not different is, that you get a real modular synthesizer: The selection and arrangement of the modules is absolutely free! You can add new modules later (simply remove 2 screws, plug in the module, fix the screws again) or rearrange them according to your needs.

In this Kickstarter project, two different preinstalled module racks are offered:

The modules in detail:

MASTER, I/O: The master module with power supply, Input/output jacks (1/8" mono minijack) for audio and control voltages and MIDI-Input (via a breakout cable). MIDI works either omni or on channel 1. MIDI Clock/Start/Stop are provided via the bus to the modules; same with CV/Gate for Notes and one Controller.

2OSC: 2 Oscillators with Squarewave, Triangle and Sync outputs, Sync and CV input

NOISE: A noise generator (white noise, digitally based with variable frequency)

FILTER: A filter with lowpass/bandpass/highpass output, adjustable frequency and resonance (Wasp type)

ENV: An AD type envelope (Attack/Decay) with switchable Sustain and two time ranges

2VCA: A dual voltage-controlled amplifier for controlling signal levels or modulating control voltages

LFO: modulation oscillator with squarewave (adjustable pulsewidth), triangle or falling sawtooth output, two time ranges

2S&H: A dual Sample&Hold module, for creating random or stepped control voltages

2ATT/CV: For attenuating control voltages or as voltage source

MIXER4-4: A mixer for signals or control voltages with four adjustable inputs and additional four "full-level" inputs.

DELAY: A delay with a lo-fi, analog character

LOGIC: Combines two inputs by different logic rules (AND, NAND, XOR); for rhythmic patterns and also interesting for audio signals (gives ringmodulator-like sounds)

STEP10: A trigger sequencer with up to 10 steps, for creating gate patterns

The future of AE modular:

If you know a little bit about modular synthesizers, you will see that we have the basic modules in the box; but the fun get's much bigger with additional other modules. If this project succeeds, there will be a lot of other modules available that are planned or already under development like:

Burbank, CA - August 4, 2015 - Spectrasonics has released Omnisphere 2.1 with a streamlined 'Sharing' feature for sharing user sounds and a new Library Publishing capability. Version 2.1 is an update to the company's recent v2 upgrade of its flagship software synth. In May, Omnisphere Version 2.0 was released with vastly expanded new synthesis and creative capabilities for sound design, along with significant user interface innovations, and thousands of new sounds. Sharing sounds is simplified in Omnisphere 2.1, the end-user can simply shift-click on a few Patches or a few Multi-patches and then save them to be transferred to a friend or musical collaborator who also has Omnisphere 2. Sharing patches automatically includes any user audio, which is especially convenient with custom patches. Sharing multiple types of Patches, Multis and user audio all at once is easier too, with Project sharing; the end-user can just collect a set of sounds in a project, and then share the project.

The new "Publish Library" feature in v2.1 was created for third-party developers of Omnisphere libraries. It allows developers to easily export, or "publish" a library of Multis and Patches, along with any associated user-created Soundsources, as well as graphic images for the custom library in a single .omnisphere file format. End-users can then easily install this package into their systems with a single step.

"I got an old dialer, monted this good old piece to on of my modules and configured the dialer as a sort of signal interruptor. This video shows the first sound check. I'm not really satisfied with it. Maybe I need more soundsource or a better signal dispatcher. There is a lot of room inside of the box :-)"

(www.etsy.com/people/MichaelRucci), run through a noise-machine by drmoonstien (www.youtube.com/user/drmoonstien), which alters the soundspectrum. the distortions are controlled by body contacts, as you can watch in the video. the body contacts allow a very intuitive handling. at least the sound passes the memory man by electro harmonix, a delay/reverbdevice with a lot of possibillities."
