Taiga - Paraphonic Modular Synthesizer
New desktop synth from Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers packs a powerful punch with 3 oscillators, wave folders, innovative vactrol-less dynamics, and more!

January 31st, 2023 - Pittsburgh, PA - Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers today announced Taiga, a 3-oscillator paraphonic synthesizer.

Taiga is a powerful, complete, modern, and modular instrument that's a tour de force of the Pennsylvania based analog synth R&D team's recent inventions. Taiga wraps these new tools into a surprisingly accessible package that provides a massive pallet of 100% analog sounds to its users.

Taiga’s sound can be attributed to three uniquely Pittsburgh innovations. A trio of huge analog oscillators, the unmistakably smooth sound of the Pittsburgh Filter, and the warmth + punch of the unique Dynamics Controller. These enable you to not only create sounds that would be traditionally expected from an analog synthesizer but also to explore new sonic textures and performance possibilities.

Taiga oscillators
Waveforms generated by the three Taiga oscillators stretch beyond the basic geometric shapes and sounds associated with analog synthesis. Taiga waveforms pass through up to three proprietary, cascading waveshapers designed to precisely manipulate their symmetry and harmonic content. In addition, each oscillator includes a robust six-stage wave folder to add even more complexity and depth to the diverse sonic palate of Taiga.

The 'Pittsburgh Filter'
The Pittsburgh filter has defined the sound of Pittsburgh Modular from the moment it was introduced. A signature gummy and relaxed sound with no dead spots that has been tweaked to perfection. It offers a warm, smooth sweep through the full frequency range and a sweet resonance that does not roll off the low end. This generation of the Pittsburgh filter is specifically designed to ensure a remarkable interplay with Taiga’s oscillators.

Pittsburgh Dynamics Controller
Pittsburgh's new Dynamics technology imparts Taiga with a uniquely organic depth and presence. By simultaneously managing both amplitude and harmonic content, the Pittsburgh Dynamics Controller expands beyond the one-dimensional VCA found in other synthesizers. It does this by utilizing new advancements from traditional low pass gates to add additional definition and dimension to the voice of Taiga.

When used in low pass gate mode, sounds shed harmonic content and become warmer as they decrease in volume. This mimics how sound waves react to their environment. Because of this connection, the Taiga sounds more natural or complex compared to other instruments.

Echos, Mixer, MIDI, and much more
Pulling no punches in rounding out Taiga’s capabilities, Pittsburgh has included MIDI to CV conversion, mixer, preamp with soft clipping overdrive limiter circuit, analog bucket brigade delay, dual envelope generators, digital multi-modulation tool, LFO, noise generator, clock-synced arpeggiator, and an internal clock with tap tempo (can be externally synced too). You can use Taiga without patching or dive into its 60 patch points to use its components as separate modules with external devices or reroute its internal patching. The creative possibilities abound!

Synth Jam 90: Roland Aira T-8 beat machine

video upload by Marcus Padrini

"Um dos lançamentos mais divertidos Roland dos últimos tempos. A T-8 é uma Groovebox que reúne alguns timbres clássicos de drum machines da marca e o icônico synth bass da tb303. Sequenciador de 32 steps, distorção, delay e reverb, além de uma série de outras possibilidades. Tudo em um instrumento muito compacto, que funciona sem fios, com bateria recarregável via USB-C. Esse texto acabou sendo um Review 😅 #synth #drummachine #rolandt8"

Sunset at the balcony while playing synths + emergency radio

video upload by Agustín Spinetto

"I've been playing my modular synth at the balcony and catch some of the colors of the sunset. Also connected my emergency radio, that has a winding crank for getting electricity, and live looped it using the Monsoon module. Everything was controlled and played with the sequencer from Korgs that I bought a couple of months ago, and I am still learning how to get the best from it.
I specially like how it gets dark as time pass by, Check it out!

VMC - midi orientated eurorack modules with voltage control

video upload by Florian Anwander

via https://florian-anwander.de/vmc/

"The VMC-System is a series of modules for Eurorack systems, which provide MIDI handling and (analog) clock handling in a broader sense. The modules are internally connected by an additional ribbon cable, which provides powersupply, MIDI busses and an analog clock bus. Basically this bus can be combined with the Fluxus Modules by http://soundcomplete.net/ if an adapter board is used.

The modules are distributed under the brand name fanwander.

The following modules are planned:
Euro-Pal: a euro rack version of the MIDI-Pal - with kind permission of Emilie Gillet (Merci beaucoup!). Clock-Man: a master clock generator for MIDI-clock, DIN-sync and analog clock. Assumingly including a shuffle and swing function.

Break-Beat: a bar orientated start / stop / restart function. The idea is based on the Mungo-Enterprises Sync2 (I give big kudos to John Pillans!).

DIN-2-CLK: a DIN-sync to analog clock converter. This will be the "professional" followup to my DIN-Sync to analogue clock interface

All modules are available as assembled modules and as kits. Frontpanels and PCBs may be sold separately.

At the moment a first production run has started with the following modules:"

"The VMC-1 is a generic module, which combines an ARDUINO NANO with a display, five buttons, three digital-inputs and two control voltage inputs with amount control.
This module may run various software.

At the moment (12/2021) I offer only the SQ-3P sequencer, but other programs like chord-trigger, voltage controlled MIDI-converts, or similar will follow soon.

You need at least one of the Input/Output modules listed below to connect the VMC-1 to youre MIDI-environment. For details see the VMC-1 users manual

Width: 18HP
Depth: 40mm

Powerconsumption:
if powered with +12V ~300mA, if powered from +5V ~250mA, less if used without LED backlight

The modules are distributed under the brand name fanwander."

Explore the many faces of granular
Graindad is a granular effect for high quality realtime audio manipulation. Freeze, texturize or reorganize & slice your audio, triggered by transients, clocks or MIDI notes. A complex modulation system with intelligent randomizers provides astonishing results. Filters, reverbs, delays and the all-at-once manipulating Harvester complete the package.

Key Features
Grain Engine with up to 64 grains
12 main controller for easy handling
Harvester: Innovative modulation system
Freeze, Stutter, Glitch, Texturize
Multiband transient detector
Host sync and transient clock
16 step trigger sequencer
LP, BP, HP, Band Reject filters
HQ reverb, spring reverb, shimmer, delay, flanger, chorus
Complex dry/wet envelope
Modulation system with countless random functions
Morph between Harvester and modulation

What Graindad can do
With up to 64 grains Graindad offers extensive possibilities to define your sound in realtime. With 12 main parameters, quick and powerful access to granular synthesis is provided.

There are basically 2 modulation systems: a classical system with modulators like step sequencers, lfo, & envelope, for familiar access. And a modulation system called Harvester, which provides an easy and playful way to control multiple parameters at once in a visual manner. These two modulation systems can then be mixed for uniquely complex results.

Randomization is a big part of Graindad - varying amounts of randomization can be applied to nearly every parameter. Furthermore, there are dedicated functions to define when randomization should be generated, for example, a transient in your audio signal can trigger a randomizer.

See https://sugar-bytes.de/graindad for additional details.

CRUMAR BIT 99 SYNTHESIZER MIDI CONTROLLED

video upload by Davide Micheli

"The video I made is on the BIT 99 electronic synthesizer built by CRUMAR in 1984. The purpose is to show some technical characteristics of the vintage electronic synthesizer.
In particular, I updated the firmware by changing two EPROMs (see the following site: https://www.untergeek.de/shop/crumar-...)
The MIDI controller is the 'Stereoping's Synth Controller'.
In the video I play some patches whose synthsizer parameters are changed in realtime by means of the MIDI Synth Controller.
To emphasize the versatility of the MIDI Synth Controller and the deep 80's sounds of the BIT 99 synthesizer, I recorded a bass sequence on CUBASE and transmitted via MIDI to the BIT 99 synthesizer.
While the sequence is being played by the BIT 99, some parameters of DCOs, VCOs, VCF etc...are edited in realtime. LFOs are modified too.
The video is improvised and I hope it is useful and fun for fans of vintage electronic synthesizers."

Seiko's Forgotten Synthwave Dream Machine

video upload by HAINBACH

"In 1983 Yamaha released the DX7, which became the most successful synthesizer of its time. To much less acclaim, Japanese watch-maker SEIKO put out the DS-System in the same year. All but forgotten today, the DS is rather strange - it consists of a home keyboard that can be expanded with an additive synthesizer and a sequencer module. A complete flop when it came it, but rather charming for today's Vapor- and Synthwave schooled ears.

ER-99 Online Web-Based Roland TR-909 Emulator by Extralife Instruments

video upload by Extralife

Update: video added above.

"Play the ER-99 free here! https://extralifeinstruments.com/er-99/

Celebrate electronic music history on 9/09 day with ER-99, a web-based instrument 🎛️ based on a famous Japanese drum machine from the 1980s. It was built to celebrate 9/09 day 2022 🎉!

All of the drums are synthesized using the WebAudio API. The hi-hats, crash, and ride cymbals are produced from sampled audio.

The complete source code is available on Github: https://github.com/matthewcieplak/er-99"

Original post:

This one is in via Extralife, maker of the Super Sixteen DIY Eurorack Sequencer, featured in additional posts here.

"This year, to celebrate 9/09 day, I've built a free, open-source analog drum synth you can play in your web browser. It's called ER-99, and you can play it here (works best on desktop devices!)

You can program patches and sequences on the web interface and save them as presets using the menu below the sequencer. (I have also added MIDI input for sync with external sequences).

You can also read the complete source code on Github. It's surprising how simple many of these sounds are to make!

The original Japanese drum machine that inspired this project is an analog sound design masterpiece, and you can read circuit analysis about its clever use of noise and bandpass filters over on Network 909. I've tried to use the same techniques in the digital domain but I'm sure I can tweak them to get even closer sounding: http://www.network-909.de/circuit.htm"

Making Sound Machines Coming to Dutch Modular Fest

Dreamy Shuffle, Lush Pads: Stolperbeats and Digitone
video upload by Making Sound Machines

"We're off to Berlin - excited to be hosting a workshop at Schneidersladen, tonight at 7:30 pm.

We will be playing a short modular live set, spill the beans on our setup and share our deepest and darkest secrets about deliciously bad timing in #Eurorack. You're invited to swing by, and we look forward to hanging out and chatting afterwards. You will have to sign up via mail - info@schneidersladen.de

We recorded this dreamy little sketch during the search for our live set - a very simple setup using the Elektron Digitone as a sound module for its lush synth pads and slick drum tones, sequenced and shuffled by our #Stolperbeats drum trigger sequencer via MIDI notes. The module in turn receives MIDI from the super portable OMX27 keyboard by Denki Oto (with backlit linear Cherry keys - love it!)

Stolperbeats, roughly translating to 'beats tripping over themselves', is our drum trigger sequencer designed to create shuffled beats influenced by the gritty push-and-pull grooves from the golden age of Hiphop. We've always been fascinated by taking our beats offgrid to give them more fluidity and life. This module allows you to easily dial in and seamlessly switch between all the shuffle, feeling and groove we would, in the past, painstakingly nudge together in a DAW.

Stolperbeats is used here in its 'MIDI Rec' mode, originally envisioned as a quick way to map pitch, channel and velocity from drum machines onto the modules instrument channels by matching the selected instrument to the incoming MIDI data. Turns out this is really fun to use as a transpose with an external keyboard to provide shuffled melodies to the Elektron #Digitone.

If you are in the Netherlands, come see us at Dutch Modular Fest 2022 in Utrecht on Saturday Sept 3rd - we'll have a booth there next to the lovely This is Not Rocket Science (TiNRS) and Vaski, who will both show amazing new stuff."
