Hataken Interview

Back on March 31, I put up a post on Hataken, a Japanese DJ artist who primarily uses analog synths. At the time, Shane Chisolm, the manager of Don Juan Dracula mentioned Hataken was working on a remix version of DJD's "Take Me Home". Shane asked me if I'd be interested in doing an interview with Hataken, and I thought why not. It would be interesting to hear his perspective on the world of synths as a live DJ artist. The following is the result of that interview. Note, this is a long one. You will want to use page down to scroll through. If it is too long for you, I recommend reading one or two questions each time you visit the site. Each DIY item below would typically have been a separate post. There is a lot of interesting stuff here. That said, I start with an introduction followed by asking Hataken how it all started for him. Note the focus is primarily on synths as this site is about everything synth, and Hataken delivers. The gear he has both worked with and designed to meet his specific needs is overwhelming. There's also an interesting interlude on experimenting with frequency counters to produce specific frequencies of sound known to have healing properties, and of course there is a bit of the age old discussion of digital and analog.

Before we start the interview, I want to thank Hataken for taking the time out for this, and I want to thank Shane for suggesting it. It's a fascinating history of a DJ synth artist with interesting perspectives that I'm sure I will come back to over time. Be sure to check out the video and link to more at the end. And of course be sure to check out Hataken's website.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Korg Wavestate 2: Modular Clouds 50 Generative Performances (Presets). Sound Demo/No Talking.

video upload by Anton Anru

"Modular Clouds" is a collection of 50 dreamy generative performances for Korg Wavestate. This is my one of the hardest works, I made a huge effort to create this soundset. Wavestate is a very complicated synth, and I dived deep into its features and possibilities.
🔋 Get the soundset: https://bit.ly/36FBL3S
Highlights:
☑️ Each performance is made from scratch: lanes, modulations, settings...
☑️ True wave sequence 2.0 synthesis, extensive and deep use of unique Wavestate features, that make the presets stand out from other synthesizers (subtractive, wavetable, FM...)
☑️ Thoroughly set parameters and complex modulation.
☑️ All 8 Performance Knobs/Macros are assigned to different parameters. They give changes from subtle to dramatic.
☑️ Vector Envelope adds movement. It has its own motion, and you may tweak it to change the timbre.
☑️ ModWheel add expression.
☑️ Making each performance took me about 60-90 minutes.
☑️ No external/additional samples are required.
☑️ Performances' volumes are equalized for a comfortable browsing.

Modular Gameboy Triple Arduinoboy

Published on Jul 10, 2016

Note there are two videos in this set:
Modular Gameboy triple Arduinoboy
ARDUINOBOY triple gameboy modular synth

Some of you might remember the first iteration of the Triple Gameboy Arduino posted in 2011 here.

Details from the first video above:

"GAMEBOY TRIPLE OSCILLATOR
heres some holy chill music from some LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER DIY synth.

Is something i initally made 3 years ago as a stand alone module to match some other gameboy powered modular machines i built, but it got taken apart i found it in the shed a couple of weeks ago and it was rusted and mouldy, so i took the idea and made it better. this one is midi, in this video it is sequenced by a number of Arduino midi sequencers designed around a modified code of this :- http://brendanclarke.com/…/04/23/arduino-based-midi-sequen…/

Its core is an Arduinoboy designed by Trash80 with some EMS smart cards with his mGB software on them. on top of that it has some oscillators which effect the clock of the gameboys, hence making them tuneable by slowing up and down the gameboys speed, all 3 of them work off each other to make a fatter version of just 1 of them that is all. the processor clock speed is also controllable by CV. the initial sounds by the gameboys are channel 3 which is the WAVE channel, one of the midi sequencers up top out is used to record the cc from control voltage of that knob to the right which controls the wave table.

the pulse channels and the wave channels are panned so they can be kind of seperate so they can go into different reverbs and into the mixer.

its all powered by the midi sequencers which is all clocked by an alesis hr16, i pre played in the apregiator style sound into one of the midi sequencers prior to recording this cus its really hard not to mess up, so just muted and unmuted that. along with a lot of drum patterns which are triggered by various step sequencers and probability triggers.

the front panel is loose because im having problems booting all of the gameboys up at the same time from the front panel, and seinse the back of the gameboys are inside ive kinda gotta pull it out and turn it on and off again if it crashes. but hopefully will be an easy fix.

the keyboard controller is a bit of a mess, the controls on the front panel was a master clock so i didnt have to use the Alesis HR16 but it didnt really work very well so i had to bypass all of that and solder the end of a midi cable straight to the arduino in the controller... work in progress.

its all doused in reverb to sound kinda HOLY.

SO YEAH HOLY GAMEBOY. you can find out more on the older project at :-
ZIBRAZIBRAZIBRA.COM
and the old one i built is here :- [posted here]
filmed and added some closeups after. hence the clock speed being slow in the close ups."

Moog Sound Studio: DFAM + Mother-32. 50 Combo Patches. Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the soundset for a semi-modular system Moog Sound Studio: DFAM + Mother-32. It is a collection of 50 patches that include basses, drums/percussion, leads, plucks, textures, FXs.
There is a wide range of sound colors inside the pack: massive and gentle, aggressive and soft, bright and dull, melodic and inharmonic tones, straight and polymetric patterns.
🔮 Get the soundset: https://bit.ly/3x756yg

Highlights:

✅ high level of interconnection of the synths
✅ thoroughly set parameters
✅ detailed notes for patches full of tips and tricks
✅ audio examples in 3 versions: DFAM only, M-32 only, both together
✅ to recreate these patches you need up to 12 patch cords
✅ one of my hardest work ever, I spent up to 2 hours for each patch
✅ FREE BONUS: 150 samples with Scale and BPM (70-128 BPM), Wav 24/44100

The main point of the soundset is the high level of interconnection, not just syncing the two synths with independent timbres (individual presets for DFAM and Mother-32 are also available on my website). In this patchbook the timbres of the synths are soldered and can’t exist separately:
🔸 they modulate each other with LFO and Envelopes
🔸 a sequence from one synth change parameters on the other one
gates and triggers interaction breaks predictable patterns
🔸 audio signals from VCOs may be used as modulation sources to create harmonies/intervals or crazy experimental inharmonic tones
🔸 or they may be used just as audio sources that go to the other synth to be processed with its (different) filter and envelope and get the «second life».

At the same time, they play different and clear roles, it’s not a sound mess, but two synths working in close cooperation.

Moog Matriarch: 50 Poly (Paraphonic) Patches. Sound Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

https://antonanru.sellfy.store/moog/

"Welcome to the soundset for a semi-modular synth Moog Matriarch.

'Polychrome' is a collection of 50 paraphonic presets that includes vintage strings, lo-fi keys, rich pads, warm stabs/chords, bright leads, dark drones, generative-style and FX-like timbres. The presets vary greatly from the point of view of complexity: some are simpler and will work in any track and genre, some are experimental and will make your tracks sound unique.

The soundset is suitable for ambient, electronica, techno, minimal, deep, house, progressive, trance, psy, lounge, chill out, downtempo, IDM, industrial, breaks, drum'n'bass and others.

Matriarch suggests great tools for stereo sound: two filters, independent VCAs, BBD Delay. I modulated them a lot to create wide and beautiful patches, that can be hardly recreated on other hardware (especially analog) synths. Matriarch has an absolutely fantastic feature set and I tried to intensively use it to create exclusive timbres.

The soundset is presented in the form of PDF-Document. Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, what parameters worth tweaking during the playback, how to develop the timbre during a performance. If you make all the settings consciously and try the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn many things about the synth and discover its true depth.

Each patch has an audio example, it helps to understand how a patch is supposed to sound. No external effects on Matriarch, built-in BBD Delay only.

Undertow - Mimeophon, Morphagene, VCV Rack, O Coast, Neutron

Published on Nov 3, 2019 Omri Cohen

"'I've recorded a whole session and all I got is this stupid thumbnail'... Yeah, I was stupid enough to delete the wrong folder so all the footage I got left is this one picture I took so unfortunately, there's no video of the performance this time. Anyway, I also sing a bit in this one and the lyrics are from Undertow by Leonard Cohen. It was all recorded live and there are some patch notes further down. Here are the lyrics:

I set out one night
When the tide was low
There were signs in the sky
But I did not know
I'd be caught in the grip
Of the undertow
Ditched on a beach
Where the sea hates to go
With a child in my arms
And a chill in my soul
And my heart the shape
Of a begging bowl

If you like what I do and want to support my work, consider joining my crew on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/omricohen

You can get the WAV file of thie performance and also the indivisual stems on my Patreon page - https://www.patreon.com/posts/31218953
and also the VCV Rack patch file - https://www.patreon.com/posts/31282704

Patch notes:
-----------------------
- In VCV Rack I have Rainbow (4ms SMR) going into Clouds creating this organic pad.
- I've used the Make Noise Mimeophon as a synth voice and played it with the Keystep, recording it into a looper in VCV Rack.
- Rainbow is also sending pitch information to the Wave oscillator from Blamsoft for another layer of the pad.
- In VCV Rack I have the NoteSeq from JW sending 8 notes to a sequential switch and from there to the O Coast. So the O Coast is playing this fast arpeggio that I bring in and out at certain times and it's going through Chronoblob 2 in VCV Rack for a nice ling delay.
- For the bass, I'm using Basal from Vult and the Neutron, using another sequential switch to send different notes sequentially. The Neutron is also going through Chronoblob 2 and Plateau in VCV Rack.
- I'm recording my voice with the Zoom H6 directly into the Morphagene so as soon as I'm done singing, the Morphagene plays back the mangled version. I didn't have any more inputs in VCV Rack left for the Morphagene so I had to send it directly to the DAW and add some reverb and such there, but it was recorded live with the patch itself.
- The same Note Sequencer is sending another arpeggio to an FM voice with a couple of FM-OPs in VCV Rack."

Have you ever tasted psychedelic space soup?

Its taste is different, a taste you have never tried before. After the first teaspoon of this soup the world is different, everything is vivid, colorful, glowing, rainbow and liquid. You can hear the colors and see sounds. You enjoy every simple thing and everything is new and magical. Things that were grey and boring before are extremely interesting and colorful. Sounds are flying around you, you can touch them, you hear many spirals, aliens, fairies, echoes, sounds are reflected from walls, decomposed into molecules and reassembled. Some time after eating space soup you are back from magicland to mother earth. Everything is same like before again, but at the same time different forever. You never look at the world the same way, now you have new optics, endless joy and every new thing is magical and interesting.

There are many effects in the plug-in market. But we wanted to create something totally new with original sound which sounds like psychedelic space soup. Something that is progressive but very creative, playful, funny and easy to play at the same time. Something that brings lot of joy, psychedelic atmosphere and magic results to your production.

It is almost impossible to explain sound, algorithms and functions of Psychedelic space soup plugin. It creates special spirals, modulations, magic 3D space, psychedelic reflections, new dimensions, resonances, fractals...

Psychedelic space soup is progressive, psy-experimental effect which works perfecty with any EFX sounds from film music to psytrance, hitech, fullon darkpsy, proggy or psycore, with beats from experimental to psychillout, ambient or psydub, with any synths, indie / psychedelic rock and dub guitars, voices, vocals, percussions from minimal, progressive, techno experimental, film music to modular synth beats.

You can use this effect to transform basic FX synths and samples to something totally different, change simple synth to hybrid modular / analog sounding superspiral, change basic boring beat to psychedelic trip around universe. You can use it also with psytrance, minimal, techno or progressive percussions, claps, snares, blips, hihats. You can use it with pads, acid arps, fullon psy leads, risers.

Audio Damage Introduces Continua Virtual Analog Synthesizer for Windows, macOS & iPad

Introduction Published on Jan 8, 2020 Audio Damage, Inc.

"A brief overview of Continua, a virtual analog synthesizer for your Windows, macOS, or iPadOS music-making. Continua bucks the current trend of Robocop wavetable synths to bring you a somewhat more chill environment. Morphing oscillators and filters ease your sonic environment in to place, while custom chorus, delay, and reverb algorithms blend it in to a huge and complex soundspace.

Full MPE implementation and modulation routing for days make Continua an incredibly expressive synthesizer, while TUN file loading allows explorations outside equal temperament. A true player's synth, Continua is both bedrock and atmosphere. Try the demo at http://www.audiodamage.com today!"

Moog Grandmother: Modular Experimental Patches. Sound Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the patchbook for a semi-modular synth Moog Grandmother.
«Explorer» is a collection of 50 experimental but usable presets: 12 Leads, 10 Basses, 9 Plucks, 10 Arps, 6 Drones, 3 Chords.
It includes aggressive, bright, detuned, freaky, noisy, atonal, metallic, generative, evolving, rhythmic timbres. This soundset is opposite to my previous one, «Analog Classics», where I made more regular/basic/classical timbres. In «Explorer» bank of presets, I tried to dive deeper in a modular nature of Grandmother and get most interesting and exciting results.

🔊 Get the soundset: https://bit.ly/3x756yg

The patches are suitable for many genres: Techno, Ambient, House, Deep, Progressive, Trance, Minimal, IDM, Downtempo, Lounge Chill Out, Electronica, Dark/Noise, Industrial, Breakbeat, Drum and Bass, and many others.

The soundset is presented in the form of PDF-Document. Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, what parameters worth tweaking during the playback, how to develop the timbre during a performance. If you make all the settings consciously and try the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn lots of things about the synth and discover its true depth.
Each patch has an audio example, it helps to understand how a patch is supposed to sound. To recreate these patches you need up 8 patch cords.
You should also install firmware v1.1.3 or higher to have access to all settings used in this soundset.
