DECtalk PC is a speech synthesizer card designed to translate ASCII text files into synthesized speech output. From there, it can get interesting.

dectoke1.mp3

dectalk_legacy.php6

This is an external Dectalk Speech Synthesizer useable with virtually every computer PC, Mac Linux et al... This is considered to be the gold standard, the best and most well known of all the hardware speech synthesizers. There are a number of on board standard voices including "Perfect Paul” the default voice of the unit, appearing on the Momentary Lapse of Reason album. There are 8 basic presets plus a user defineable voice : Perfect Paul, Huge Harry, Betty , Rita, Ursula, Kit ,Dennis, Frank, NV (user defined). There are voices in British English and other languages available. At one time the software and voices were quite expensive but time and ubiquity has eroded the cost and it is an inexpensive proposition to design voices now.

This is a very programmable and playable useful board. It can be used as a musical instrument or voice output in place of a monitor. It is easily modified both input and output and the 7.2 rechargeable flat pack battery makes it completely hum and noise free. The power supply has a ferrite bead that cuts down in hf noise and some ESDI.

HighSage - Lindow's Window

YouTube via shagghie | February 02, 2011 |

"This original track / live performance (see HD/HQ vid link) is dedicated to Michael Lindow, an amazing muralist from Detroit. Mike painted the cover art for Time:Space 2 and a series of murals for Derrick May. I'm hoping this track will help get the word out that Derrick is trying to reconnect with him. Please send me a msg here or hit me up on twitter: highsage , if you have any 411 for Mike.
Sampled my TB-303 for lead acid and sampled X0XIO on bassline. Pitched down Acapellas from Katy Rokit (with permission). Machinedrum TRX kick, with sampled hats from my TR-909.
The length of the track is exactly 20:20, which reflects Mike's perfect vision for a techno future that is still unfolding into space and beyond. There is no art without intention.
note: vid still uploading to youtube. please watch / listen in HD/HQ when it's up. Please PM me asap with any contact info for Mike."

Livewire Vulcan with reset / sync mod

Livewire Vulcan with reset / sync mod from Danjel van Tijn on Vimeo.

"Demo of a mod done to the Livewire Vulcan to allow independent reset of the two LFOs. To the right of the Vulcan you can see a 4HP panel with the two jacks mounted, behind this is a circuit board designed to interface to the Vulcan and process incoming triggers. Jack1 is normalled to Jack 2 so that one cable can trigger both resets. Modules used: MFB SEQ-01 (provides the triggers) Livewire AFG (single oscillator that is being modulated) QMMG (not doing anything until the later parts where I modulate its in LPG mode) Doepfer VCA (just being used as an attenuator) The SEQ-01 could be replaced by any source of rhythmic triggers including gates from your midi to cv converter. The demo starts with no sync and simple modulation and then I start to patch more complex triggers and cross mod. Sorry for the poor quality! I forgot to turn on the camera light.... future videos will be better :) Also this mod may be offered as a kit, check the muffwigglers forums for more details. I plan to add switches for selecting mod sources and jacks to patch in external CV to the SUM/DIFF/MAX/MIN circuits"

"This project started a year ago with a ‘non-working’ Emu Proteus/1 from Ebay... the years have not been kind to this synth and now most software out of the box can do what it can in spades. But rather than throw it away I decided to mod the crap out of it and see what I could come up with."

I made molds of the original knobs and casted several out of clear resin before I found a couple I really liked. PAIA 9710 VCA/Mixer in Metasonix drag

via brian comnes:

"OK so I got this PAIA kit 4 years ago - started it and then moved to Chicago where I did nothing on a bench for 3 years - now that I'm back on West Coast and have a workbench again I finished the job. This is a PAIA 9710 VCA/Mixer done up in a yellow box with 1/4in jacks. I built it so my Metasonix TM-3 VCO could have an envelope and VCA controller and thus be useful beyond just droning on.

Anyway there are 3 shots, open, closed and on the bench with the TM-3 , a Moog Freqbox, and a JKJ MIDI/CV controller. I find the TM-3 works great when it's FM'd by the Freqbox, it makes for a rather meaty sound that can be controlled by Volts/Oct setting from the JKJ. I can wire the TM-3 directly but have to switch to Hz/volt but the TM-3 is not very temperature stable, i.e pitch/tuning changes noticeably the longer you leave it on. That's no biggie but you can see why an R-60 controller has value in a Metasonix set up.

I hope to have some Soundcloud samples in a week or so, I'm still learning to play the TM-3 with a ribbon contoller - sort of the Trautonium from hell.

Peace
Brian"

S-trig Control of Space Echo Footswitch

YouTube via chromeeumm | February 01, 2011 |

"The footswitches used with Space Echos switch a connection to ground, hence why I tried employing an s-trig adapter to automate control of these functions from a modular synthesizer.

Please note that the various Space Echo models appear to implement their foot switches differently, and I've only attempted these tests with this RE-150 and an RE-501. Its my understanding that in the RE-201, the footswitch stops the entire tape transport (motor, etc... ). Consequently, this might not be a good idea to try with those units! In these other models, the tape remains running all the time.

The s-trig adapter used here (home-made; based on a 2N3904) failed to work in controlling the footswitch functions of my RE-501. I was, however, able to leverage a Synthesizers.com Q128 analog switch to toggle a connection to ground (using a home-made 1/4" shunt in one of the Q128's throws ). This works great with the footswitch jacks of the RE-501, and is especially fun when used to engage the sound-on-sound looping feature.

Thanks for watching, and happy Space Echoing!"
