"With regret, selling my Seiko DS-250 and DS-310. It took me a long while to track this one down, and even longer to acquire the programmer that really opens it up and makes it incredibly unique. You may see the keyboards come up from time to time, but in most cases, they are really beaten up or missing the proprietary power supply. Finding the synth with the programmer all in great working order like this pretty much never happens.
This listing is for the DS-250 keyboard (the best of their product line) the DS-310 programmer, and the original power supply.

All of the keys and buttons work fine, although the LED light on the detune/transpose control flickers a bit. You'll also see that the F1 key is tilted. It still works fine, just looks out of alignment. The rear of the DS-310 programmer has a large crack in the plastic, but it does not impact the functionality at all. You can still program sounds perfectly fine. Overall, this synth is in excellent functional condition. I used it on my last two albums without any issues at all. I will be very sad to see it go....

I recorded a video demonstrating the synth so you can see that everything works. In the video i point out some of the cosmetic flaws above. Click here to check it out:

http://youtu.be/AeqLgbqb0cg

What makes this synth unique:
- The sound character. It really doesn't sound like anything else i've heard.
- The ease of programming the additive harmonics.
- It's bi-timbral...so you can split or layer two sounds...each with their own MIDI channel.
- It has perfectly functioning MIDI in/out/thru.
- Different output options (RCA and 1/4" plus headphones)."

"Part filter, part distortion, part delay, many flavours of noise and lots of ways to destroy.

Analogue mixer, analogue filter, analogue distortion, digital delay (for the crash factor).....

The video is a bit of a long runner and i made the mistake of lots of hands getting in the way moments, having not made one for a while. But it's worth checking out most of it if you like the idea of one of these. They're pretty good fx units with quite a unique character of their own. Capable of some pretty unhinged audio damage. In a way a bit like a sherman filterbank although obviously not as large or as intricate. It's not quite sure what it is but whatever it is it does it well.

The chimaera has a two input mixer fed to a high pass / low pass filter which is then fed through a variable distortion circuit and into a digital delay to a single output.

A selection of things end up going on here. People are often looking for a good distortion for a TB-303. I'd say this is one. In fact i'd say this is perfect for that kind of thing. If you've ever enjoyed using rebirth and the trippy / over driven sound you'd easily get out of that then this comes pretty close.

Another demo of some drums, similar to the prototype demo i uploaded months ago. The lfo to the filter and delay has since been improved as has the distortion. Lots of little tweaks. With those revisions finished the pcb for this was finalised and i'm happy with it now.

There's then a demo of it on it's own just using the filter resonance as a sound source going to the dark side with the delay crash and modulation. Whale songs and insect chatter. Not particularly musical in conventional terms but a good show of it's lfo routing and capacity for fx and the abstract, even with no input.

Finally a bit of improvised Charles Clouser style horror film type stuff. A monomachine drone and a little key melody underpinned by a cassette in a four track played backwards and slowed down, which leads into a drone / delay overloaded climax. Great modulated delay at the start.

Chimaera also has a 3.5mm cv input socket to the filter cutoff if you fancy hooking it up to your cv capable synth or modular.

The idea was to make something with a fluid feel that you could go in so many directions with. It never gets old. The more you mess with it the more tricks you pull out of it. Putting even a cheap toy keyboard through it or a rubbish drum machine sounds good. Maybe i'll film those soon.

With the uploading of this video a small batch of these are available. I've been on and off of this project for months and it's finally finished. Message me if you want one. If you miss out on this run and still want one let me know because i can quite easily build you one."

"A generative and (mostly) self-running piece, with elements of drone, dark ambience, glitch and terrifying sub-bass.

The main sound source is Braids in Wavetable mode, which is processed in three ways:

- Through a Doepfer A124 Wasp filter, which is FMed by a Dixie II sine that tracks a variation of the sequence that drives Braids.
- Through a uVCF that is also variably FMed by the A124's output. Resonance is high, so that when it's not being FMed it sinks down to a low, distorted sine bass.
- Through a Metasonix R54 and Serge Resonant EQ to pick out some higher harmonics, then into an Optomix which is rhythmically struck.

The first two get lots of delay from a Vox Delay Lab, and the last goes into an Erbe Verb, whose Size parameter is modulated by a very slow uLFO to create constantly shifting spaces.

'Melodic' sequencing (and I use the word rather generously) mostly comes from a Turing Machine into an A156 quantiser, with transposition from Moskwa. Other sequencers, LFOs, and Turing Machine expander outs modulate the FM amounts and decays, filter sweeps, Erbe Verb modulation amount, "bassline" overdrive, pluck pattern and other parameters."

The goal was to create something in 48hrs, although due to the set time in a different time zone and my work hours, I did this in 12hrs (woke up and started at 10am and now uploading at bit before 10pm), haha, so maybe not the greatest mix and thought out concept, BUT it was a great incentive to get back making few more music clips, yay! :D"

Modcan Dual Delay: Feedback and Granular Delays

Published on Oct 30, 2014 Chris Penalosa

"A few patches that experiment with the Modcan Dual Delay CV inputs for asynchronous, granular delays.

First patch
No audio input. Modcan delay mode is in resample, medium delay time. The filter in the feedback path allows for more dynamic feedback.

Second patch
Input 1: Shapeshifter wavetable is set to Basic1 for both oscillators for a FM synthesis patch. Rene is sequencing the pitch, which is being clocked by an LFO via CV X input. Out 1 from the Shapeshifter is sent to the Borg 1 and Rene's X gates are pinging the Borg. Final out is sent through the Dual Delay Ch. 1. The delay CV is being modulated by two Peaks' free-running LFOs.

Input 2: Braids is set in FM mode and is sequenced by the Brain Seed, which is also being clocked by a LFO. Braids is sent to Borg 2 and Brainseed's trigger out is pinging the Borg 2. Braids is then sent to Modcan Ch. 2 and the Delay CV is modulated by 4 asynchronous LFOs."

"Dave Smith Instruments Releases New OS and Soundset for Tempest Analog Drum Machine Gets Enhanced Feature Set and New Sounds, Beats, Projects

San Francisco, CA—January 3, 2015—Dave Smith Instruments has released a new operating system for their acclaimed Tempest analog drum machine that adds a number of highly requested features — as well as entirely new internal sounds, beats, and projects. The new version, OS 1.4, ships with newly purchased instruments and is also available for download from the company’s website for users wishing to upgrade instruments with older versions of the OS.

Notable among the new features are:
• Increased sequence length (up to 128 sixteenth notes, or 8 measures of 4/4) • Arpeggiation
• New modal scales
• Free-running LFOs
• Compressor envelope controls
• Quantize disable
• A total of 928 new factory sounds, 64 new beats, and 16 new projects

Co-developed by Dave Smith and noted instrument designer Roger Linn, Tempest has been embraced by musicians from a wide range of genres for both live performance and studio recording. “The new OS adds several powerful new features to an already powerful instrument,” said Smith. “And we’ve enlisted the talents of some heavy-hitting sound and beat designers to come up with a extensive amount of new content that’s not only fresh and inspiring, but also versatile.” The new content takes advantage of the new OS features and was over a year in the making.
As Smith puts it, “Our users have put Tempest to a lot of really creative and expressive uses and this upgrade is going to allow them to take it even further. We can’t wait to hear what they do with it.”

The Tempest has a MAP of $1999.

Price and specifications subject to change."
