TR-8 & Ableton Dark Techno Jam With Custom Samples

Please support me on my bandcamp: synthesisminimalis.bandcamp.com

Hello ladies & gentlemen! Ever wanted to use custom samples on your Roland Aira TR-8? Well, I sort of came up with a solution, all you need is your machine at hand, a usb cable, and Ableton Live. I myself have been looking all over the internet for something like this but couldn't find it anywhere so I decided to have a go myself...
It's basically a custom midi mapping for Ableton, I've set up a drum rack and mapped all the sliders and knobs accordingly, i.e compression and attack on the kick, etc...

Just make sure to drop your samples inside the simpler presets in the drum rack and NOT DIRECTLY TO A DRUM PAD, this will erase the mapping I've accomplished with my blood, sweat, and tears.
Even more fun will ensue if you've got an audio interface with multiple outputs handy, scatter your brains out with your custom samples using the built-in scatter effects, simply assign a pair of stereo-outs to your external inputs, then route all the internal drum sounds to one of the assignable outputs instead of the regular L/R outputs, then you just route the audio out through the Aira and back in, and voila, amygdala tickling sound effects that would put even the death star's lasers to shame!"

Dave Smith Instruments "In The Spotlight with the PRO 2" with iVardensphere

The second in Dave Smith Instruments' "In The Spotlight with the PRO 2" is with Scott Fox, aka iVardensphere, is up.

"Scott Fox is a unique quantity in the world of modern electronic music. Hailing from Edmonton Canada, his project ‘iVardensphere’ emerged from Fox’s desire to explore both heavy electronics and his love of world percussion, anchored by a love for deep sound design and crushing rhythms. That passion, combined with an ever-evolving and maturing production sensibility, have become the project’s trademarks. Over the course of five full-length albums and innumerable remixes, Fox has become one of the foremost live and studio musicians in North American industrial.

For all of its grandeur, Fox’s sound has proven remarkably fluid. Monolithic analogue synth bangers share space with simmering groove-based instrumental experiments, tribal industrial drum workouts and deep, textured ambiences.

There’s no mistaking the scope and gravity of an iVardensphere track when you hear it.

We sat down to talk with Scott about about how he’s using his Pro 2."

"Hello here I have a 230v vintage "1989" Studio Electronics MIDIMINI 3 Osc Mono Synth of a beast for sale kept in a well cared for smoke free studio, the SE MIDIMINI is basically a Moog MiniMoog Model D but in a rack format, SE would remove many old vintage Model D parts and put them in their SE racks and include a tone of additional features like more dynamic mods such as VCA, VCF to respond to velocity, after touch pressure and MIDI, as well as using the 3rd Osc for modulation purposes, they also included a extra LFO which the original Model D boards did not have, later SE made clone replicas of the Model D some of these included original Model D boards and replica boards, both however sound amazing to my ear, with the SE synths you get MIDI implementation as well as solid rocking tuning stability, without having to pay the sky rocketing prices and maintenance the original Model D's need and seem to be going for these days."

"An ambient aleatoric modular patch.

Noise Engineering Numeric Repetitor sending gate pulses to the Tonnetz Sequent which is sending (modulo) pitch cv to three Q106 vco's. Filtering and EG's are all synthesizers.com and Oakley Audio.

A Flame Chord Machine is also used for pitch duties to three more Q106 vco's and a Mutable Instruments Rings.
There are doubling of the pitch data to a noise patch using a pink noise source and a pair of Q960 sequencer to control a cv FM Radio module to a CGS Real Ring Modulator then through a MOTM 440 LPF into an Encore Frequency Shifter. The FS is cv modulated by a 10v signal from MI Frames. The Down output of the FS is sent directly to Clouds right channel. The Up output of the FS is sent through a Makenoise Echophon in pitch shifting mode. It is 1v/oct controlled from a fourth channel out of the Flame Chord Machine. The feedback output of the Echophon is sent to the left channel input of Clouds the left output of Clouds is returned to the Echophon feedback input and the mix out is back into Frames via a Yusynth Minimoog filter.

Frames is amplitude modulating the Clouds outputs.

Loads of pseudo random voltage and gate timings from two Turing Machines and 4MS QCD. The main clock is from Cubase dinsync to a Pamela's Workout.

Intellijel Plog is used for a Malekko Switch module to shift the vco third and fifth cv's from the Tonnetz, and the input to the Chord Machine. It is also used to toggle the 2nd Tone factor on the Chord Machine.
Two Maths and a Quadra are employed to control timing to the Frames automation.

Other FX include a Z-DSP in Halls of Valhalla, a Behringer Chorus Space pedal and a Strymon Blue Sky pedal. A pair of Lexicon MX200's are used for subtle reverb and delay."

Patch Notes #16 - Arpeggios with Make Noise René

Published on Aug 28, 2016 Voltage Control Lab

"Patch Notes #16 explores our latest tutorial, using René as an arpeggio sequencer to create complex chord progressions and musically interesting improvisations on them.

Make Noise Tempi is mult-ed out to the René X-clock input (stepping through the chord root notes), and another output at 4 times the clock rate is routed to the cycling channel 4 on Maths, then out to the Y-clock input on René (stepping up the “arpeggiated” chord tones). The QCV output is routed to the pitch input and the Y-gate output is routed to the gate input on the 0-Coast, which is routed out the Malekko Mix4.

The mult-ed clock sent to René is also sent to Brains/Pressure Points, one channel of which is routed to the 1v/Oct input on the main oscillator of the DPO. The final output is routed to the MMG in low pass mode, then to an open channel on the Optomix (which isn’t really doing anything to the signal, actually). The modulation oscillator is in Sync mode, the main osc expo FM attenuator is at noon, as is the FM bus knob. A looped channel from the ADLFO is routed to the Fold section input. Optomix out to the Mix4.

Another channel on Tempi is routed to clock the Ornament & Crime in Piqued mode, generating a Euclidean rhythm with fluctuating fill amounts modulated by another looping channel on the ADLFO. The O&C rhythm is routed to channel 1 on Maths, which is then controlling the second channel on the Optomix. The Both input is being modulated by yet another looping ADLFO channel. Braids is routed through Ripples LP2 mode (FM modulated by another ADLFO channel), and into the Optomix channel. Braids is in Meta mode, the FM input modulated by the stepped random output from the Wogglebug (also clocked via Tempi), the pitch modulated by the smooth random output. The Timbre and Color are modulated by the Malekko Anti-Oscillator in LFO mode, the triangle output to Color, Mayhem to Timbre. This is producing the glitchy percussive rhythms.

Two channels from Tempi are routed to clock and reset the Malekko Varigate. One channel on the Varigate is sent to the Envelator, which is modulating the Dual Borg kick drum we’ve explored before. A second channel is triggering the snare from the Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas.

Everything is routed through the Mix4 and then through the Mutable Instruments Warps delay in the Parasite alt firmware.

"This unit is of later production (SN: 1474) and is very stable and in great shape. The only issue is with three adjacent keys: C#, D and D# 5 (upper-most register): These notes play as they should, but the aftertouch is intermittent and the volume is occasionally louder as compared to the rest of the keyboard. This may be a problem with the pressure sensors underneath those keys, a wiring issue, or an issue with an associated logic chip. Other than that, there are no problems with the synth; it sounds fantastic after it warms up, and all 8 voices (16 really) blend with the expected fatness! All features, sliders, switches, presets, etc. work as they should."
