Steampunk Dieselpunk styled Shruthi-1 with Door Handle

via this auction

"Unique handmade steampunk/dieselpunk styled synthesizer module. Inside the case is a Shruthi-1 monosynth/sequencer with SMR-4 filter from Mutable instruments. This is a hybrid design with extremely flexible digital oscillators fed into an analogue filter and VCA. See http://mutable-instruments.net/ for full details of functionality. The case is wooden with a solid brass sheet front panel. The panel is not perfect and has a few “dings” on it but they add to the atmosphere of the case. The pressure gauge and handle are there purely for aesthetic purposes and serve no function (although the handle does move and I did consider hooking up to a pot for filter sweeps etc.). The unit can be battery powered (6 x AA rechargeable or alkaline) or can be supplied with 9v via the socket on the rear (centre +ve). What looks like old fashioned bulbs are in fact LED's cunningly disguised to look like bulbs! They respond to the button pushes to assist in identifying which menu is active.

Unlike a mass produced plastic gadget, the case of this synth is not perfect. But that's not the point...it is quirky and you won't find another like it. It is 'new' in the sense that I haven't taken it out of the house or used it other than for testing. But it does have a “handled” feel because it is...er... handmade :-)"

TECHNICS SY1010

via this auction

"Manufactured and sold for the Japanese market, this was a low cost alternative to the many monophonic synth's that were so popular at the time. This was Technics dipping their toes into the synthesizer market at home in Japan first. Obviously the SY1010 never became a classic and Korg and Roland went on and changed the music world with their own synthesizer offerings. It was a powerful and capable little mono synth in it's own right in any case, although it was not heavily marketed apparently though and as well being manufactured by a company more known for home stereos and turntables. So it was that the Technics SY1010 remains the Technics company's only foray into the analog synthesizer market. Some years later they did produce a few different digital and sampling keyboards but this remains the only all analog musical instrument in the company's history."

They also did the WSA physical modelling synth.

"Note: Although I am associated with Folktek as a visual artist/sound designer, this work is unaffiliated with Folktek.

This is the ultimate live glitch visual production tool. Every professional VJ should have one of these in their arsenal. It has an amazing way of fragmenting, fractalizing and freaking whatever video you process through it.

This WJ has TWO modes of operation:

SOUND VISUALIZATION MODE:

By plugging a well-amplified audio signal in to the modified AVE-3 you can profoundly glitch the visuals in a variety of unique ways.. all in real-time. Just take a look at the videos below. This mode is good for veejays, performance artists or art installations.

VIDEO SYNTH MODE:

Without sound you can use the control box to hone in on a variety of glitch effects and looks, some not possible in sound visualization mode. This mode is good for post production, experimental film & masking/overlays.

Of course both modes can be combined. In fact it is encouraged.

All original functions of this mixer work except the mic input, headphones input and the titler input (all which were safely removed to make room for controls).

The original physical condition of this unit is a 9.5/10. About as clean as they get.

This device is perfect for:
Adding a unique look to your indie tv/film/event production.
Providing you with a variety of effects you can't get with After Effects.
Live professional VJ work .
Making dubstep music videos.
Lo-fi enthusiasts.
Inducing epilepsy.

This device is not perfect for:
HD football games and your 20.2 megapixels HDR HDMI gizmos."

Building DIY SammichFM 2011

YouTube Uploaded by Synthnl on Dec 10, 2011

"This year I build a Wilba SammichFM DIY synthesizer kit. It is bases on the famous Yamaha OPL3 sound chip that was also used on the famous Sound Blaster Pro 2.0 and SoundBlaster 16 ASP sound cards. It is a 4 voice FM synthesizer that sounds a lot like the famous Yamaha DX series. During the construction of the synthesizer I filmed the whole process. This movie is an excerpt of the 4 hours total build time. I made the 3D animations myself in Cinema 4D. The music you hear in the background in a track called 'thermosphere' from my 'AtmoSphere' album that I released in 2008. More information on the album on http://www.synth.nl/AtmoSphere. If you are interested in the whole build process of the SammichFM you can read that back on my blog on this URL: http://synthnl.blogspot.com/search/label/sammichfm"

Moog Voyager Signature Editions - SN 338

via this auction

Here's something interesting. If you look at the second pic you will see the back has a "VOYAGER by Bob Moog" sticker on it. I've only seen others with a standard Moog sticker. I believe there were only 600 of these that all came out around the same time, so aside from wood type, I assumed they were all roughly the same. If you are lucky enough to have a signature edition Voyager, take a look at yours.

For those not familiar with the signature series, Bob Moog hand signed them in the square to the left of the display. Click the top pic to see it.

Update via the world of next tuesday in the comments: "It's "Voyager by Bob Moog" because it was sold in England and had to be re-logoed for legal reasons because someone else scooped up the trademark for their own use.. In terms of numbers, yes, far fewer were officially built for UK sale."

FreeEWI for iOS

"Virtual inline MIDI event mapper for iOS

FreEWI (pronounced free-wee) was designed as a free add-on for MidiBridge for EWI players, but can be used by anyone who needs to map MIDI events between apps. For mapping to/from external MIDI interfaces (or CoreMIDI network), MidiBridge is required.

Using FreEWI inline in a MIDI event stream, events can be processed as follows:

- Remap incoming MIDI channels to a different channel
- Remap incoming controller messages to a different controller
- Translate incoming controller messages to channel pressure (aftertouch)
- Remap incoming program change messages to a different number
- Transpose incoming note events up or down

Although primarily designed for use with MidiBridge, FreEWI can be used with other apps that have CoreMIDI virtual support. In order for another app to be compatible, the following applies:

- Generating app must be able to write to FreEWI's virtual MIDI port.
- Receiving app must be able to read from FreEWI's virtual MIDI port
- Generator and receiver can be same app

FreEWI supports fast switching to and from MidiBridge, so you can fast-switch/launch MidiBridge from FreEWI and vice-versa. Other OMAC apps that support fast-switching will also be able to fast-switch to FreEWI.

FreEWI does add a small amount of latency which varies depending upon the speed of the device and how busy the device is. Runs on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and requires iOS 4.2 or greater."

"Let me introduce you one of the best innovative iPad/iPhone apps, which brings a totally new concept of a touch-less, audio-visual application that literally make music in the air and visual effects at the same time. The audio control of generating sound can be compared to the theremin. The trick is that you need not to move or touch your device.

The application uses a combination of the magnetic sensor, great graphic possibilities, and marvelous sound which are offered by iPad/iPhone and iOS. The magnetic sensor is placed just around the biohazard sign on the app's view, so closer you get with a magnetic stuff the higher tones are generating. By included keyboard you can determinate in which musical scale will magnetic fields play sounds.

The sounds are very suitable for music like funky, dub step, electro, trip hop, noise, and many more.

So just grab some magnetic, metaled stuff or get closer to them by upper-right corner of your device and try out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eslyZi7TSNI

Use:
– unique musical instrument
– the most impressive metal detector ever
– practical tool to teach/learn how physics or music works
– magician's tool, to make illusion of a magical hand

Features:
– uses 3D space around magnetic sensor to make sounds and animations, touch-less control
- up to 5 octaves available (depends how strong magnet is)
– change speed or variation of particle animation sequences
– change particle size of animation sequences
– variety of 5 synth instruments simulating sound of organ, human voice, clarinet, flute and
saxophone
– tune color or vibrato of the generating tone
– change sound volume
– set your own musical scale by the virtual keyboard to be played
– save your settings
– play along with your music library or on the background while playing another touchable or shakeable instrument (more feasible for dual-core devices)
- designed for iPad2, but iPhone version included

iPod devices does not have possibility to detect magnetic fields so you cannot use them as the musical instrument (only basic tone is generating)."

"Inspired in part by Leif Elggren's Virulent Images/Virulent Sound (if images can be virulent, can sound be virulent too?), blackdeath is the first open hardware/free software noise synthesiser with the plague inside.

Embedding epidemic and plague simulations amongst other data generation algorithms for granular re-synthesis of incoming audio signals or self-generated feedback, blackdeath represents a virulent yet highly controllable noise/audio engine with built-in, switchable distortion.

Alternatively you can abandon the plague carrier and code your own sampling software to make use of resident 512 Kb RAM (64 seconds of audio sampled at 8000 samples per second), 8 bit DAC (Digital Analogue Convertor), and digital switched distortion(s). A prototype area is provided to design, test and run your own distortion designs..."
