OP-1 Kids Song "Brusha Brusha"

YouTube Uploaded by djthomaswhite on Jan 30, 2012

"Here is a rough preview of a sing I have comped together with vocals into the OP-1 on board microphone, internal synthesizers/drums and all laid down to the tape. It's a rough idea, but my son Kieran and the shows we watch (Yo Gabba Gabba, Wubzy, Sprout, Nick Jr, Sesame, etc.) got me thinking about writing some kid-focused music. Kieran is learning to bruch his teeth and I have been singing him the melody for some time now. The OP-1 made it really quick and easy to rough out a basic idea. The synth parts were sequenced with "Endless" sequencer and the drums were written with "Pattern" sequencer. "Brusha Brusha" has a catchy repetitious melody and in the least I am inspired to finish this piece of music and write some more tunes to sing with my son.

All music and Lyrics have been written by me for Natural Rhythm Music 2012."

These also added to Part 1 here.

"Here is Part Two of the 3-Part "Making a Remix" OP-1 video tutorial. In this example I plug the OP-1 into the computer to capture the audio instead of using iPhone and iPad microphones. Further ideas towards the composition are presented, mostly showcasing editing and arranging of sampled audio bits within the OP. Part 3 will showcase taking these audio ideas out of the OP-1 and into Logic in the Mac to show how using the OP-1 as a launching pad for music composition can end up.

The song I am working on is "Let's Get It Together" by Manjane on Bomb Digital out of San Francisco. The final version will be the Natural Rhythm Remix and will be out for sale digitally by summer."

OP-1 Tutorial: Bouncing Tracks

Uploaded by djthomaswhite on Jan 30, 2012

"Here's an overview of some different ways to bounce tracks and audio around in the OP-1. This has been a popular question in response to my tutorial videos. The good news is you have options and there are more than one way to bounce audio. However, you can't just bounce track one to track two, and you can't bounce a track to another in an overdub fashion with a button combo. You can get this result with a little creative thinking and extra work... this is the theme of the OP to me. I hope you enjoy this video tutorial!"

OP-1 Tutorial: Bounced House Demo

Uploaded by djthomaswhite on Jan 30, 2012

"Here's a follow-up demo to my tutorial on bouncing tracks in the OP-1 that shows how bouncing (Lifting in groups or sampling from groups of tracks) pieces of some tracks can be the inspiration for a whole new musical composition. Some tips and tricks are thrown in, but this is mainly about demonstrating the process of working with previously bounced audio pieces (in this case bar at a time). Thanks for stopping by to check out another one of my videos."

Controlling an Andromeda A6 with a Steiner EVI Breath Controller

Andromeda Filter driven through CV input by Steiner EVI

"Steiner EVI used as breath controller through CV to modulate Andromeda A6 filters. Multi tonguing and human voice growling near last half to show some exaggerated modulation and possibilities."

via Infrablue on electro-music.com:

"Some real time playing around with CV input using a Steiner EVI as a breath control source. Notes and pitch bend played on Andromeda's keyboard.

All the modulation of volume, tone and filters are done in real time with the breath control through CV input by normal blowing as well as humming with my own voice into the EVI, multi tonguing and pallet fluttering into the EVI. Sound its self is from the Andromeda VCO's etc.

A Yamaha BC can do this stuff as well but it would need to be converted to CV instead of midi.

The playing is a little clumsy and also exaggerated to show the modulation... For most of the patches here, I usually like less resonance on a melodic line but these demonstrate the CV quite well.

Near the last half the resonance and growling grow progressively more extreme for demonstration. There are about 4 different patches throughout.

I was up all night excitedly playing around with the CV input... glad I finally got around to trying it! So happy to finally get breath control going on an Andromeda!

And here are a few tracks from about 17 years ago with melodies done on that same EVI using it's own analog sound module to compare. (Initial flute sound is EVI playing VL70-m module in a duet with an analog EVI square wave.)

The Analog Lab NYC-MaxiKorg Ext Audio In/CV Filter Mod

YouTube Uploaded by TheAnalogLab on Jan 30, 2012

"Consider if you will:

A MaxiKorg modded by The Analog Lab in NYC.

-External Audio Input
-CV Filter input for both hi and lo pass
-inputs for upper and lower voices

These input jacks route control voltages to the filter's cut-off setting. The Hi and Low-Pass filters each have their own individual control inputs. The filters are optimized for 0 to +10 Volt control signals, making it compatible with most analog synthesizers available. The voltage is combined with the front panel controls, adjusting the traveller sliders for the correct swing on the external CV inputs.

Because the Maxi-Korg does not have a way to turn off individual oscillators, the two toggle switches on top function to disconnect the Ring Mod oscillator from the signal path.

Here, we have run a TR-707 into the MaxiKorg for a quick and dirty little demo.

Enjoy!

FORMANTA RHYTHM FRET NECK SOVIET USSR GUITAR KEYTAR

via this auction
mechanical animals

"The unit has one connection plug - Soviet 5DIN. As far as I know it used as an addition to FORMANTA UDS and MARSH UDS drum sets. Unfortunately I don't posess any of these so I cannot test the unit anyhow. It has 7 buttons on front side and 2 on the back. According to manual while tapping the "SPHERIC THING" the unit sends trigger commands to the control module. Probably it can trigger any drum machine or kinda. I cannot know that for sure, sorry. The unit is in good cosmetical condition (a few scratches as seen on the photos below)."

Update via the world of next tuesday in the comments: "Keytar? More like Drumtar. Lets say your band's keyboardist gets a keytar and starts dancing around the stage wielding their axe. Pity the poor drummer stuck there in back behind his kit. Well if you have enough rubles and know the right people a drummer can be dancing around the stage too. By the way, the DIN is to connect to several channels in a drum brain, it's not MIDI. "

The GREATEST Custom Studio Keyboard Stand!

via this auction

Some great synth spotting below as well. Note the Con Brio, Conn Electric, 360 Systems, and OB-Mx amongst others..

"Perfect for someone with a large keyboard/synth collection and want to keep it close without a lotta space. It is a 6 tier keyboard stand for wall mounting. It's VERY strong, and mounts to the wall (please find studs to screw into!) securely with long screws/bolts. It's welded iron, with some foam pads added to each tier. Over the years, I've had many people approach me about making another, but I never did. It will be a bear to ship, but it's possible. I'll leave it at "local pickup" for the auction, and IF you want to ship it, we'll deal with the cost them."

3 RARE VINTAGE SOVIET LELL EFFECT PEDALS

via this auction
mechanical animals
(RSS)
"INCLUDES (FROM LEFT TO RIGHT): LELL EP (PARAMETRIC EQUALIZER), LELL DD (DRIVE DISTORTION), LELL CZ (DIGITAL DELAY) :::

LELL were the first normal stompboxes made in Russia. They had normal guitar jacks and even a 9-volt socket - same format as BOSS pedals. The footswitch pad reveals a battery cavity underneath.
The company still exists! It's website for some unknown reason claims the company was established in 1992. But look at the pictures - we've got a proof it was active in the 80's. The headquaters is located in Moscow, on the Lower Krasnoselskaja street.

In general, it must be said that some of the LELs sound interesting and useful. The die cast metal boxes of LEL fx's are heavy and solid, but the jacks and some other components tend to break which renders many of these pedals useless for gigging, but they're still very cool for a studio.

#1 LELL EP (PARAMETRIC EQUALIZER)

- 4 control sliders include level, frequency 50Hz-500Hz, frequency 500Hz-5kHz, frequency 5kHz-15kHz, and 3 control knobs for each frequency +/- 12dB.
Like most Russian analog gear this pedal produce different sound from well-known guitar pedal brands.
This pedal is truly PARAMETRIC not graphic equalizer.
Body made of metal. Power standard BOSS type AC adaptor or 9V battery operation.

#2 LELL DD (DRIVE DISTORTION)

The Drive/Distortion features two circuits in one pedal and the mini toggle switches between them. Two upper knobs are overdrive and distortion gains and the lower row of master controls affect both effects.

The overdrive section is more useable because the noise this thing produces is terrible and the distortion amplifies it too much. But I like the sound of the overdrive: it's not brutal and it aplies a very strong EQ to the signal. It cuts everything except for middles in a narrow 800-10kHz range (no' it's not from the manual, it's what I hear). The "filter" knob shifts the frequency peak around 1-5 kHz. All the rest of the knobs affect different gain/volume stages. I use this pedal mainly with vocals - the EQ it produces is very telephone-like and it makes the vocals cut through.

#3 LELL CZ (DIGITAL DELAY)

"Digital Delay" in Russian goes like "Cifrovaja Zaderjka", and while in Russian "CZ" makes sence, it was lost when it was transferred to another language. In fact, there was no chance to convert it into "DD" (digital delay) since the DD pedal already exists - it's "Drive/Distortion".

Thanks a lot http://www.meatexz.com/ for the info."

Bob Moog Foundation Announces Pilot Program of Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool Curriculum

"Bob Moog Foundation Announces Pilot Program of Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool Curriculum in Asheville City Schools

January 30, 1012 – Asheville, NC The Bob Moog Foundation (BMF) proudly announces the launch of a pilot program of its hallmark educational project, Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, at Asheville City Schools’ (ACS) 2nd grade classrooms.

Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool (formerly known as MoogLab) ignites the creative and innovative spirit by teaching children the science of sound through the magic of music. The experiential curriculum, which meets state and national standards, integrates intuitive, engaging electronic musical instruments to teach the physics of sound to young students. For the pilot phase of the program, the 2nd graders are using theremins, which were donated to the BMF by Moog Music, Inc. In addition to an introduction to the physics of sound, students are taught about scientific method using examples from Bob Moog’s science notebooks, as well as examples from other seminal inventors.

The SoundSchool curriculum was developed over the summer of 2011 by a team of music and science educators along with music technologists. Jonna Kwiatkowski, PhD, Assistant Professor at Mars Hill College, an experimental psychologist specializing in creativity, coordinated the curriculum team.

Following the development of the curriculum, the BMF collaborated with eight participating 2nd grade teachers from ACS, teaching them the necessary background knowledge regarding the concepts of sound in preparation for successful teaching of the SoundSchool curriculum. This professional development was conducted in the Fall of 2011.

The pilot program will run for 10 weeks during the winter and early spring of 2012, after which an assessment measuring science proficiency and creativity will be issued to participating students as well as to a control group who will use a state provided kit-based curriculum.

The curriculum development and teacher training have been guided by Donalyn Small, Instructional Coach for Science at ACS. “This unique opportunity has been an honor for our district. It gives our students a chance to learn the concepts of sound using lessons that have been designed using a constructivist approach. They are innovative, authentic and promote creativity as well as 21st century learning skills. This partnership was timely as the state has recently adopted New Essential Standards for Science. The SoundSchool curriculum reflects these new standards,” Small explains.

Following the assessment of Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, the BMF plans to seek grant funding to grow the program nationwide. Currently, the Foundation is conducting a fundraising campaign on IndieGoGo.com in an effort to raise $50,000 for the program.

The last in a series of kickoff events will take place on Tuesday, January 31 at Vance Elementary School. BMF volunteers August Worley and Ben Hovey will explore ideas, invention, sound, and music with 2nd grade students as an introduction to the course work that will ensue over the next 10 weeks."

Two Bugbrand SV Filters Having a Party

YouTube Uploaded by otoskope on Jan 30, 2012

"An illustration of the complex waveforms you can get from just a Bugbrand PRC3A SV Filter when fed back to itself. The signal chain is one SV filter to each channel (L and R), nothing else. Feedback strength, and self-modulation (frequency, Q) for each filter are controlled by some auxiliary circuitry (VCAs and bipolar modulators) run by gestural sources (sequencers and looping envelopes).

More on this specific technique here: http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=51588

Actually, the cross-modulating envelopes (2xENV1, in the lower row of the modular) create rather interesting rhythmic patterns. It is an interesting technique. Each envelope modulate the other's timing.

Apologies for bad image quality."

'MIDI-IF' allows you to be able to control Monotron++ by keyboard. VCA works as noise gate. But you can use it by external cv to control its expressions (option). The schematic of VCA is also based on MS-20. It's getting to be almost MS-20 clone now.

The sound you hear is all played live by the musicians and their smartphones. In this case we are playing on the app-instrument "thumbjam" for iPod touch and iPad. [iTunes link] By lifting and lowering the devices tone and volume can be modulated. In this way an expressive play can arise.

However, the DigiEnsemble Berlin plays more than classical music, its musicians experiment with a wide range of genres, play
heavy metal, avantgarde or compose own pieces.

Literally "Largo by Handel" is a praise to the shade of a plane tree.

Homemade drum pads

"I have an idea for a drum interface to use with some of my homemade synthesizer modules. But to make that I need some drum pads. In this video I am therefore making a set of drum pads out of some wood (some of it is actually chipboard) and some old speakers.

The music is something I made in 2002. I used the Yamaha HE-8 organ, Roland CR-1000 drum machine, and JX-8P synthesizer."

"After making the drum pads I need to build some sort of interface that can convert the short electric pulses from the pads to an analog voltage that can control other musical devices.

The music is something I made back in 2003. I played it on Yamaha HE-8 and Viscount RBX-850 organs, Roland CR-1000 drum machine and JX-8P synthesizer."
