Stylophone Trio

YouTube Uploaded by peahix on Mar 28, 2012

"Hear a fancy recording of this piece here: http://soundcloud.com/peahix/stylophone-trio [embed below]

This is a live performance of a trio I wrote for stylophones. The stylophonists are myself, Scott Paulson and Christian Hertzog. This was performed at the UCLA library as part of an all-stylophone concert organized by Scott Paulson. There are a few mistakes here and there, and the mix isn't great, but you get the idea!"

"I was commissioned to write a piece for Stylophone by Scott Paulson of UCSD to be performed as part of the Stylophone Festival he put on at the library there. I decided to write a Stylophone trio, and exploit all the various features of the instrument. The performance wasn't perfect (see video link), but I put together this recording that gets the piece across pretty clearly. The only thing I had to cheat on was the palm mutes, because I wanted to record direct instead of sticking a mic on the speaker. So I used a low pass filter in Cubase instead."

Yamaha TX81Z FM Synth Sounds Demo 1

Behold. This is the TX81Z FM rack mount synthesizer. Truly an undervalued piece of gear, and a powerful secret weapon for the most adventuresome tweakers. I've been going full-on honey badger w/ FM synthesis programming my own sounds into this little gem. And I absolutely love it!

Some patches are going through a Lexicon MPX550 (offscreen) set on "Gothic Hall" reverb preset. And some are just bone dry.

List of patches:
0:17 DrtySecret. Very unique FM pitch interval sound.
0:44 Rhodes. Delicate electric piano tones.
1:01 81Z State. Old school acid house bass. 808 State.
1:27 Wowocaster. Notes played fast legato (upper) it sounds like a fake strat. Held notes (bass) swell and growl. Wow, man.
1:47 Filthy FM. Raunchy, dirty, crunchy lead sound.
2:03 Harder FM. Old school hardcore rave sound.
2:27 DrkMachine. Brooding Sci-fi horrorshow sound.
2:49 AttackBass. Conventional bass w/ quick attack transient.
3:14 WhurlyEP. Electric Piano. Queen, and Supertramp.
3:44 AuroraBlue. Gorgeous atmospheric pad.
4:10 PaddedEdge. Digital, Edge-y pad."

TB MIDI Stuff iPad Editor for the Yamaha FS1R

TBStuff ported several pages of my Touch OSC editor for the Yamaha FS1R. That editor was mapped for The Missing Link. This TB MIDI Stuff port works with CoreMIDI over USB so you do not need The Missing Link for it to work, although it will work with it over wifi as well. A cool thing about this editor is that communication via USB is two-way, meaning if you change a parameter on the FS1R, it will also show up on the editor. Also, this editor shows you the value as you edit so you can dial in edits more precisely. Currently there are templates for the following pages: fseq, Cmn, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and EQ. More may follow as TB MIDI Stuff has time, but I thought any of you with an FS1R wouldn't mind giving these templates a try. You can find them here.

SONICA SN 595 of 650

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction
"Only 650 of these strange instruments were made since their they began manufacturing them in 1979. Shaped like small lute with a guitar like neck and speaker inside that was the voice. They player could sound notes by touching the frets on the neck that produce at between sitar and violin. Comes with case and original user manual/warranty certificate.

After Mattel had used the concept for the "Magical Music Thing," Frank Evantoff developed a more precise keyboard and incorporated it into this new instrument, which he called The Sonica. In 1979, the first Sonicas were produced, a collaboration with Larry Heller. There were 650 eventually built, but very few are seen nowadays. Serge Tcherepnin of Serge synthesizers (analog modular) did the oscillator design, and the oscillator inside the Sonica is indeed a Serge oscillator! ( LOOK FOR SERGE TCHEREPNIN'S NAME ON THE HAND PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD!!! ) The bodies have an interesting gourd/phallic shape, and were carved wood. The neck is incredibly comfortable, and easily fits into the hand, facilitating the sliding action used for playing the Sonica.

The sound of the Sonica can best be described as somewhere between a sitar and violin. When run through a simple delay, an amazing array of soundscapes are derived. The front panel features a Key/Pitch Knob, and an On/Off Volume Knob. It boasts 15 keys with additional half step notes. It also features three buttons. Analog “Slider” which is a tremolo type effect, Analog “Tone” which is actually a tonal boost, and “Half-Step” which raises the note an octave. It features a built-in speaker, with an 1/8 inch output to connect to an amplifier or recording device. It runs on one 9-volt battery which is installed by accessing a plate on the backside of the device. The Sonica really shines when sent through a tube amplifier, producing a crystalline sound unlike anything I’ve heard before."

"Moog Polymoog serial no. 3270. Very good optical fresh condition (s. photos) Complete with the original Moog legs which act as it's stand. We have never used it live and has been kept safe in our London studios. However I do know that in 1983 it was taken out on tour by the previous owner when it had it's huge flightcase on coasters!

The Polymoog has been serviced every few years to keep her in working condition. A full service was given this month and has been given a good bill of health. The keyboard was totally restored which included many hours of work but what a great reward to see this fine instrument in almost new condition again; new bushings were installed and the internal parts were updated to the service manual spec.

The internal boards were all restored and a list of new parts were installed including; a total rebuild of the power supply, this one is a Moog psu. Being one of the later serial numbers it has had all the final engineering changes that Norlin music issued in the final edition of the service manual before the end of it's production in late 1980. This actual Poly was owned by Chuck Berry in 1983"

BugBrand Turns 8 & Beam Night @ Cafe OTO

via the BugBrand mailing list:

"The start of April marks the BugBrand Anniversary - we now enter the 8th year of Bug.

As such, it is often a good point to take stock and I thought I'd give some updates as BugNews this year has so far been sporadic.

Firstly - this Wednesday I am heading to London to play at Cafe OTO: I will be doing a 'regular' Modular performance and also premiering a new demo/ installation approach where I give quick & personal 10-minute performances via headphones.

This drives the stereo audio straight into your ear-holes, while also offering you a close-up view of what is being patched & tweaked. It should be fun and a bit different..

So, on to the news discussions.
BoardWeevils continue to be the only regular production for now: http://www.bugbrand.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=110

Since the end of last year I've been making noises about i) getting the PT Delay back in to regular production & ii) making further standalone devices.

I thought I'd just make a few small changes to the PT Delay design, but life is never that simple! There are always several ways to skin a cat (metaphorically, naturally) and I guess I've been over-investigating the different possibilities.. I think I'm now on to redesign prototype number four and I'm still not quite done! Yes, there are changes afoot, but I'm not going to reveal much more until the point of production is actually reached. In essence, despite a general lack of public progress, this is one of my most pressing projects at present and I've been learning plenty along the way.
Fingers crossed for a release before the end of May, but no promises for now.

The continued investigations of other standalones (and, actually, modular developments too) move in quite similar ways to the PT Delay - forwards, backwards and plenty of sideways maneuvers! In many ways I've been taking something of a pause & breather the last few months to allow myself to refocus on design approaches and consider how best to take BugBrand forwards.

Yours, with fascination and fun,
Tom Bugs"

Using Percussa AudioCubes to Control Your Hardware

via the Percussa Blog
"Most of you maybe wondering whether it is possible to send MIDI data from the AudioCubes to your hardware synthesizers? This is easy to do. There are several applications for the AudioCubes you can use to do this, two of the most recent apps being Improvisor and Evolvor."

"With Improvisor, you can do generative music composition. Improvisor is basically a special step sequencer in which several sequences can interact which each other, add up to each other, … they can play back at different speeds, and each sequence can be linked to an AudioCube, letting you experiment with melodies and rhythms simply by putting the AudioCubes together..."

"With Evolvor, you can generate complex curves for controling sound parameters. You can start with drawing several of these curves, which can then be looped continuously. The curves can be added up to each other, generating completely new curves. With Evolvor, you can continously modulate many sound parameters, more than you could by turning knobs using your hands. The beauty of the software is that it is try interactive envelope generation, not preprogrammed automation: each AudioCube can be linked to a different control envelope, and when you put the cubes next to each other, the envelopes will magically add up..."

JUSTFX - Electronic track made using effects pedals

Uploaded by Poppaneedsanap on Dec 1, 2011

"Everything is modulating everything. A quick track using nothing but a few effects pedals. Well... I used TL Space for the reverb and also some panning.

For those that might give a shit:
The low pass freq. is being modulated by the square LFO output of the CPU-521. The triangle output gets bent by the slew limiter and modulates delay time on the MF014Z and the Frequency of the carrier on the MF102 ring mod. The delay is mixed 100% wet so you get the non-delayed beating of the low-pass and the delayed signal from the ring mod.
White noise from the CPU is fed into the loop of the delay."

There is a key click for the electric piano and a brass voice filter cutoff. Brass does has a filter envelope. While the Lambda isn't up to the PS series of synths it does use 3 master oscillators and a chorus circuit. With some ingenuity fuller sounds can be created beyond the thin pulse waves of the dividers. Although an Oberheim SEM is shown, it isn't routed in this video. Also, the wind affects the audio at times."

Flight of Harmony Choices Demo

YouTube Uploaded by DJjondent on Apr 2, 2012

"This is a quick demo video mainly on the Flight of Harmony "choices" Eurorack module. Sequenced using Modcan's Touch sequencer. Sounds from the Atomosynth's Koe.

The Flight of Harmony "choices" is a joystick that you use to influence (amplify, attenuate, etc) incoming CV signals that you can then send to other modules.

It has separate gate & trigger outputs,2 cv inputs and 2 corresponding CV outputs.

In the first part of the video I don't use any external cv. Just triggering the Atomosynth using the choices trigger buttons and its internal DC source. The horizontal axis (left-right) of joystick controls pitch of Koe. The vertical axis (up-down) of joystick controls the VCA (thus volume) of Koe. Or you could use it to control any other voltage controlled module .. eg filter, whatever u like.

When a external cv plug is inserted, the unit automatically switches from its internal DC source to the input signal.Don't forget to disconnect the gate from the choices module when doing this.(unless you want to manually gate/trigger).

Many thanks to Matt from Rhythm Active for supplying the Modcan Sequencer, The Atomosynth Koe. and of course the Flight of Harmony "choices" Eurorack module.

Using Moog Animoog w/ Ableton Live - iPad / iOS Sound Design Tutorial Pt 3

Uploaded by DubSpot on Apr 2, 2012

"More info - http://bit.ly/HPrHQ6
In the third and final installment of our video tutorial series on Moog's Animoog iPad app, Dubspot Instructor Matt Cellitti offers sound design and production tips and tricks and shows you how to use Animoog in a Digital Audio Workstation.

The final installment of the Animoog tutorials will hopefully give you a few more tricks on how to create some really cool sounds in this great app. Once you have created an interesting sound with a unique path, I will show you how to "stretch" the orbit across your path to create thick sounds, triggering multiple timbres at once for radically transforming sounds. Moving the path around the X/Y axis will allow you to essentially create several different presets inside of one saved sound. I might start with a slow pad if I begin in the top left corner, yet morph to a sharp lead sound by pulling the path down to the bottom of the Y axis.

Lastly, it is important to realize that the signal coming out of the iPad/iPhone headphone jack comes in at a lower volume level than we would like. Simply use some effects inside of a DAW or other host program to boost the signal and create more interesting effect chains for Animoog. Set up an effect chain just once and save it for instant recall when you need it again. Works great in both Live and Maschine. - Matt Cellitti"
