iYM2151 Poly Mode Trick

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. Checking out iYM2151 for the iPad, I noticed that although it's eight part multi-timbral, each part is monophonic. I contacted the developer to find out if there was a way to play a single voice polyphonically. It turns out the app has a somewhat quirky method for polyphony. You can have up to eight voices of polyphony by setting all eight voices to the same patch in the Main screen. You can actually set up various combinations, for example 4 voice strings and 4 voice organs. Whichever is selected indicated by the little sideways triangle is active in the various editing screens including keyboard for playing. There is a limitation with the implementation though. The envelope release stage is cut off when triggering a new note or notes. It essentially gives the impression of polyphony only being active for the immediate triggering of notes. I mentioned this to the developer and he verified this is how it is currently implemented, and that he would like to change the behavior to match what you would expect. As this app is based on "a single-chip FM synthesis implementation, an eight-channel four-operator sound chip. It was used in many 80's arcade games and home computers," the current behavior is somewhat expected. See my original post here for further details and videos. Be sure to forward to the track demos in the video playlist to get an idea of what this synth is capable of. After looking at some of the editing screens, this is a fairly editable FM synthesizer. Check out the user manual at http://www.detune.co.jp/detune/iym2151

VSP-330r2 Choir Strings Demo (VP-330)

YouTube Published on May 7, 2012 by gstormelectro
Update: Video re-Published on May 8, 2012 by gstormelectro

"Trial and download versions now available!
http://gstormplugins.blogspot.com/2012/05/vsp-330r2-voice-synth-plus-is-here.html

G Storm Electro is proud to introduce the new version of the VSP-330 Voice Synth Plus VSTi plugin. Redesigned from the ground up, version 2 is a software synthesizer that emulates vintage HUMAN VOICE synthesized formant choirs and STRING sounds inspired by the rare and nearly extinct Roland VP-330. The VSP-330r2 emulation is possible through synthesis techniques just like the original instrument, not samples, using a newly developed quad-delay ensemble effect.

The 8' SHIFT DIAL affects the tuning of the 8' Male HUMAN VOICE sounds. By increasing the dial, the tuning of the 8' can be increased by 1 octave maximum. This enables the user to achieve different tuning intervals with relation to 4'. This feature was not on the original instrument.

The PITCH SHIFT SLIDER and the PITCH SET DIAL are used in conjunction to transpose the keyboard down.

Slider and Potentiometer labels will radio data values when parameters are changed.

BALANCE SLIDERS give Independent control of HUMAN VOICE and STRINGS volume levels.

Vibrato introduces a sine wave LFO pitch modulation to the Human Voice section.

THE HUMAN VOICE SECTION has independent controls for the LOWER and UPPER key ranges, has its own envelope independent of the STRINGS section, and ENSEMBLE toggle button.

The STRINGS SECTION has Toggle switches that control STRINGS on and off for the LOWER and UPPER key ranges independently, has its own envelope independent of the HUMAN VOICE section, and ensemble toggle button. TONE is a low pass filter that makes the STRINGS brighter or duller."

Circuit bent modular style Roland TR-626 drum machine

YouTube Uploaded by frostedminipete on Aug 29, 2009

"Fooling around with my favorite, biggest project so far outside (mind the "outside" noises). The first section of the video is just mods applied to a single pattern repeating. The rhythm at times due to the RAM being scrambled :] but it's all one pattern until the switch at 4:14 ish

This thing took forever to finish. There's more info at the burnkit2600 website on the TR626 section and here: http://tinyurl.com/nz5ukl

Fully rehoused in custom cut and stained wood, huge patch bay (96 points including multiplexing bay and 12 patch control bay), volume knobs and kill switches, kit switches, "fill" switches and buttons, pitch down, distortions, and... the possibilities are literally endless with this thing.

You can create little squarewave melodies with it as well by replacing certain sounds with synth sounds and then changing the pitch. I didn't do much of that in this video, this was just fooling around.

Everything I've done to this machine is fully documented. You can access it on the burnkit website in a word document. I need a website of my own :P"

Buchla 259e and 267e demo part 1

YouTube Published on May 7, 2012 by Oxix52

"This is a demo of just the 259e and 267e together. I also used the 207e, but any mixer can work. I ran the output of the 259e in to the top filter band of the 267e. The two band inputs are normaled so that a signal going in to the top filter also goes in to the bottom one. It doesn't work the other way around, though, bottom to top. I panned the two filters opposite each other to get a stereo effect."

"This is the rare pro spec stereo model. Flexible, and fun this makes lots of really interesting sounds and combinations. MIDI interface, plenty of inputs and outputs and built in stereo speakers allow you to compose anywhere without being connected to any other gear. This unit was made by the original Synsonics Corporation, before Mattel bought them and cheapened everything up.

It synthesizes the percussive sounds of the cymbal, snare drum, 2 different tom tom drums, and a bass drum. Additionally, three memories are provided to allow the storage of drum patterns.

The Synsonics Drums is powered by 6 C-cell batteries and has a 9 volt power supply input. A technique called multiplexing is used several times in the Synsonics Drums. In multiplexing, one line or group of lines is able to carry signals for use by different parts of the systems at different times.

Some of the features:
Headphone jack
RCA jacks for stereo output to an external amplifier
LED indicators
Record and playback, 3 memory locations
Snare, cymbal, tom tom, bass drum and other sounds
Use fingers or drum sticks

Complete with original box and cables as shown. Unit is in very good condition – looks good as shown and works GREAT!"

The patch uses the X and Y outputs as audio streams (they also drive the o'scope) and the Z is used with DUSG to generate an envelope of sorts. The rate control is fairly high (hence the audio output). A pair of LFOs are driving the rate and gain. In addition I periodically twiddle the knobs. The volume is low at some points and but quite loud at others, so be careful...."

Then I added some harmonies and the melody on the Technics SX-C600 and the in/outro on the little Roland SH-2000 with some added echo.
