Tiptop Audio BD909 Demo Video and Review by Various Vicarious

"just got the tiptop audio BD-909 a few hours ago. thought i'd check out how it sounds.

here's a link to tiptop's site

http://tiptopaudio.com/

here's a higher quality soundcloud link to the audio in the youtube clip (more oomph)

nothing fancy w/this patch here. simple pattern from Intellijel uStep and a bit of modulation from a Wiard/Malekko envelator and i hit the accent now and then w/a different gate from a clock divider. in this case the doepfer A-160

there is no EQ or compression. it goes from the module's output to a jackie 1640 to a lynx aurora to logic. nothing was done in the box either. what you hear is from the module.

does it sound like a 909 BD? i don't know.. i don't really care.. i think it sounds good.. and if you are into 909 i'd bet it's pretty close. i've used 909s before and it's good enough to do that kind of thing (to my ears) and for all i know it's dead on.. but i haven't used a 909 in a while and as i said. i don't care.

the parameter ranges are pretty good. enough to get good variation and not get all squirrely or turn into a bass synth. it responds well to modulation and the overload is nice.

The Daily Loops Project - KORG Poly-800 & Boss SE50

"Loop created with a Korg Poly 800 and a Boss SE50. At the beginning of the track we hear the four samples, bass, melody, pad 1 and pad 2 plus a simple pattern to listen as drums could sound together. then I put each separate patterns in the above order for you to use as they wish. There is a pad 2b is the same as one with a subtle difference in the four compass. It adds a melody that descends chromatically: C - Eb - D - Db, could be used in part B, bridge, etc.. Finally a diminished arpeggio from the note C.

bpm: 120 key: Cm

I think there is enough material to compose the hit of the summer!
Thank you for continuing this project and enjoy this loop!

PS: If you get to write the next summer hit not forget of Los Sabios Duendes!"

"An original Drum Machine... To use it, you will first have to add a Pulse to your board(s), then add some instruments. When the pulsation created by a Pulse button reaches and touches an Instrument, the Instrument's sound will be played. You can set the Pulsation circumference, the number of pulses per bar and its offset. The sound quality is really cool. Unfortunately, there are two things missing which are a little bit annoying... You can't view the BPM of your Project and there is no sharing feature... A Good App nonetheless."

"Pulsr XT lets you create music loops and beats by chain reactions.

Peter Gabriel's MusicTiles for iOS

"Featuring music by Peter Gabriel and other artists in 25-years celebration of the iconic So album by Peter Gabriel. 7 song versions included (incl. 3 Peter Gabriel song versions). IF CRASH, PLEASE REBOOT FIRST. EUROPEAN INNOVATIVE GAMES AWARD nominee. The app allows anybody – novices, musicians, and expert composers – to remix songs in a playful manner using virtual modular tiles.

Each tile has a color and represents an instrument or a particular musical stem. For instance, a yellow tile may represent guitar, and a light blue tile may represent vocal. When two tiles are put next to each other (connected), they will start playing. For instance, connecting a yellow and a light blue tile may produce guitar and vocal sound. However, the sound of each instrument depends on where the tile is connected. Connecting a tile to the North side gives one sound, another sound is produced when connecting the tile to the East side, another sound is produced to the South side, and another to the West side. Having two, three or four tile neighbors connected may also produce different sounds, depending on how the music composer has made the song. For instance, the guitar may sound in up to seven different ways, depending on how you connect the tile representing guitar.

By playing around with the modular tiles of a song, you will discover the different sounds of the tiles, and become able to make your own remixes. Your remixes will depend on how, where, and when you connect and disconnect the tiles, and how well you train yourself to do this.

Red tiles have no music in them and can be used as default tiles that allow you to produce the sound of a specific side of another tile. The red tiles make it easier for you to make "islands" of tiles. It is not necessary for all tiles to be connected. You can, for instance, put them together in islands of two and two. The way you choose to put the modular tiles together all depends on the way you want to play with them to produce your favorite sound.

In the bottom, there is a menu through which you can choose the song that you have downloaded and want to play with. You download new songs by pressing Download Song, choosing the song you want to download (e.g. from Buy a MusicTiles Song), and entering your Apple ID password for payment. Song bundles (with three song versions) are 1.99$ each. OFFER on So album with 26 song versions for 13.99$. Afterwards the song is downloaded and stored in your app for you to play with it.

Next to the play button, there is a record button which allows you to record the performance that you are making into your own version of the song. Afterwards, you can replay your recorded version of the song from the menu (MT Mixes). You can also email your recorded version of the song to your friends or share on www.musictiles.com by sending to share@musictiles.com.

Songs may use more or less tiles, depending on the number of instruments being used in the song, and some songs may use A, and B pieces on iPads. In such a case, the different pieces can be chosen in the small bar above the menu bar. Above this bar is another small bar indicating the time, which may facilitate your musical performance with the modular tiles."

First Look at Moog's New Analog Synth by Herb Deutsch

NAMM 2013: NEXT FROM MOOG...

Published on Jan 9, 2013 MoogMusicInc·221 videos

"During Moogfest 2012, Synth Pioneer and collaborator of Bob Moog, Professor Herb Deutsch, visited the Moog Machine Shop to explore Moog's next generation analog synthesizer while in it's research & design phase.

Since the inception of the synthesizer, Bob Moog tested his ideas, instruments, and sounds with musicians and colleagues, most notably Wendy Carlos and Herb Deutsch on the Moog Modular systems.

This spirit of collaboration continues at the Moog factory to this day and is essential to our work. It is a key part of the product development process, as it furthers our ideas and helps us shape better tools for musicians."

http://www.moogmusic.com/sight-and-sound/product_demo/namm-2013-next-moog

Update: Some notes/analysis (I may add to this so check back and of course, feel free to add yours in the comments): It sounds aggressive. Note the Multidrive - pre-filter gain in addition to the overload on the Little Phatty. Also pointed out are the sub oscillator and noise generator.

It looks tiny!  It will be interesting to see how it is ultimately packaged.  The one Herb is playing in this video has a two octave keyboard and is smaller than the Phatty. A new mini Mini? A new Prodigy?

Note he never touches the left panel. On the right the large knob is obviously the filter cutoff knob. Bottom right of it is the Multidrive. I'm guessing the bottom left would either be resonance or possibly a separate gain knob for the Multidrive? The center knob to the left appears to be the sub oscillator. To the right you can clearly see what looks like two ADSRs and a Volume knob. Possibly a separate headphone volume knob? The bottom left knob on the board is the noise generator and to the right of it (the bottom left of the two adjacent knobs) I'm guessing is Filter Env amount as it adjusts the filter amount as he turns it.  What's the knob to its right?  A separate Res Env amount?  That would interesting.

As for the left board, there are three switch type knobs in the top row.  I'm guessing one selects the oscillator for the corresponding knobs, one for oscillator waveform, and one for octave pitch.   What's not clear though is if this is a one osc plus sub or multi-osc plus sub synth.  I only hear one osc plus sub.  You don't hear the typical beating between oscillators, but then Herb mentions "stable oscillators" in the plural. The knob above and below the sub oscillator knobs are likely oscillator levels.  The bottom row on the left looks like they could be a pitch envelope.   Finally, a knob for audio in and the last two knobs for an LFO?

As for sound, my initial impression was that this sounds aggressive. More so than my Voyager. Similar to the Minitaur (see my review), but drier sounding for some reason. I'm guessing it's just the patch he's playing, but we'll see. To date, I'd say the Voyager, Phatty series, and to a large extent, the Minitaur all have the same tonal quality. They have that creamy analog Minimoog feel to them. It will be interesting to see if this synth can go in another direction. The first obvious thought would be Arturia's Minibrute. Herb doesn't make a point to call out a completely new direction for the Moog sound though. His message is the classic Moog filter sound with new Multidrive and Noise.
