Bob Moog Foundation Unveils Historic Schematics from Archives

"Asheville, NC - March 2015...

Today the Bob Moog Foundation releases 15 new schematics from its vast archives of hardware, conceptual drawings, photographs, vintage catalogs, design schematics and more. The release is the second of its kind, following 20 schematics shared on the Foundation's eighth anniversary, August 21, 2014. The Foundation's archival mission is to preserve the past to inspire the future. To that end, work on the expansive collection is implemented with the purpose of sharing the historical and technical information contained therein through collaboration on museum exhibits and online releases.

The recent selection of schematics spans an 18-year period (1964-1982), diverse designs, and several engineers. Many of the earlier schematics were hand-drawn by Bob Moog and represent both seminal developments in the evolution of the Moog synthesizer and custom one-off designs developed specifically for experimental musicians. Their content ranges from formative oscillators, filters, and power supplies to rare capacitance actuated relays to layout designs for some of the most iconic Moog modular synthesizers.


Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director, remarks, 'The Bob Moog Foundation takes great pride in its preservation work. We are stewards of a remarkable history, based on Bob's technical genius and collaborative spirit. While he is a central figure in much of what we uncover, equally as important are the extensive collaborations with fellow engineers, and a breadth of pioneering musicians. Ultimately, the archives demonstrate the power of one person's work to inspire another person's work. Our goal is to share this powerful paradigm to the greatest extent possible in order to inspire future generations of innovators and creative thinkers.'

Many items from the Bob Moog Foundation Archives, including schematics, are on exhibit at Switched-on: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer, at The History Center in Tompkins County in Ithaca, NY. The exhibit runs through May 30, 2015.

- MIDI support has been added (currently just note on/off, pitch bend and sysex for sending samples)
- User interface for editing patches
- Battery backed SRAM memory for storing samples, patches and sequences (eventually)
- ADSR envelopes for square and noise channels
- Three LFOs (sine, square, ramp up, ramp down, triangle)
- Detuning
- Transposing
- Pitch envelope modulation

A steady stream of music since 2008 has made Ikonika one of UK dance music's most interesting acts - equally influenced by Streets of Rage and Rich Harrison, and peppering club forms from electronica to techno with her trademark synthlines and drum fills. She's released two albums, 2010's Contact Want Love Have and 2013's Aerotropolis, and this year will be celebrating the 10th birthday of her regular label Hyperdub.

Van Allen Echoes - a musical journey in eight minutes from sun to earth

"This piece was inspired by sounds which were created by atmospheric lightning discharges and their interaction with the Van Allen Radiation Belt. These sounds* have been detected and recorded by the University of Iowa (http://www-pw.physics.uiowa.edu). I further processed the sounds using the GRP A4 synthesizer and than augmented them with a 'spacy' piece of music. As always recorded live in one track and using the famous coat from Kazakhstan. Why does the piece last 8 minutes - it's the time particles need from sun to earth and reach the Van Allen Radiation Belt - we can see them as polar lights.
The video snippets are taken from the NASA homepage (www.nasa.gov).

*The Van Allen Probes EMFISIS Waves instruments detected these signals with two orthogonal magnetic antennas (Bv and Bu) during UTC hour 18 of September 11, 2012. The predominant feature is a barrage of whistlers which originate with lightning discharges on Earth. These signals propogate along magnetic field lines through the thin ionized gasses of space which allow the higher frequencies to travel faster than the lower frequencies. This results in a frequency dispersion and the characteristic whistling tone, which also sounds a little like science-fiction movie sound effects."

I used this mostly to have Bassline/Synth out through a distortion on it's own channel, and them you've 2 channels to isolate the drums to go through hard crunching compression. If you like to sidechain compression to the main bus, then you've got another output to do that with, too. The sequencer is capable of highly complicated fill ins and live arrangements that no other device is capable of. This is one of the only genuinely Unique pieces of music production technology. Fill ins and variations on the right hand size 8 buttons mute only the instrument they're playing on (so, a Snare fill mutes the Snare from the main pattern, not the whole pattern)..."
