New Intellijel Mixup - Compact Mono/Stereo Chainable Mixer Eurorack Module

Published on Dec 20, 2017

"The Intellijel Mixup is a high quality compact audio mixer module for Eurorack. You can connect up to two mono inputs and three stereo inputs for a total of eight possible audio channels. Level controls and muting switches are available for the first three sets of channels. It also offers the handy ability of being chainable so that you can link more than one module to create an even bigger mixer."

"Mixup is a versatile, expandable audio mixer for eurorack format. It has eight front panel inputs and two outputs. Inputs 1 and 2 are single-channel mono inputs, each with its own mute switch and level control; Input 3 is a dual-channel stereo input with a shared mute and level control; and input 4 is an auxiliary unity-gain, non-mutable stereo input.

Using bus connectors on the back panel, you can chain multiple Mixups together in series, giving you the ability to mix together even more inputs, or to create sub-mixes for routing around larger systems.

Because Mixup is designed specifically for audio (and not for CV mixing), it uses AC-coupled circuitry (which reduces the potential for ‘pops’ when muting and unmuting audio), and it uses audio-grade, logarithmic attenuators for a smooth, even response across the entire volume range."

Can the SH-01A sound like a Juno?

Published on Dec 20, 2017 ranzee av

"Here I explore the similar characteristics of the SH-101 and Juno synth architecture. Both having single oscillators, the same waveform options, PWM etc. So if we put a chorus on the SH-01A will it sound the same as the JU-06?

I'll try out the Boss CE-5 chorus ensemble pedal as well as the MXR analog chorus pedal ... which one sounds better?"

Accent - Modular (and more) Jam #22

Published on Dec 20, 2017 Jay Hoskins

Title: Accent
Genre: Electronic Melodic Ambient Downtempo
Artist: Rite Rain Causality - Jay Hoskins

"Played live and recorded directly from the stereo mixer outputs.

I replaced the Tempi with a Pamela's New Workout and midi breakout which is easier do a master clock with run/stop and sync the external gear. In this jam the Pamela is the master clock. The circuit is just doing drums this time.
Drone comes from the Mutable Instruments braids through the Eowave Fluctuations filter which has independent modulations on A & B channels and then panned left and right in the mixer. It is sequenced by the Make Noise Rene. Drone audio is double through rings and modulated by Pamela.
The same sequence plays a line on the Studio Electronics Tonestar 2600 along with several modulations.
The bass arp is on the Akai Timbre Wolf in polyphonic mode. Since the notes rotate through the oscillators it is easy to have each voice have a slightly different texture and make it interesting.
Finally the Korg MS-20 provides the primary melody and theme."

"The second video in the series where we take a look at building a patch from scratch on the Volca FM. We're back looking at pads, but this time taking somewhat of a more "traditional" route to get the richness we're after by layering multiple carriers. We also look at how we can manipulate the envelopes to get more attack out of our patches.

i am lucky enough to have a modified RS202 with an audio ext in in the chorus ensemble
i just played with the Jupiter 8 through that chorus (a short piece from Alarcen / Goyone, initially played on a Solina)
It's interesting to hear quad vco (dual mode) or triangle in an ensemble chorus"

BARD Synthesizers - IVAN (Phosphor/Vacuum Tube Overdrive/Distortion) @ patch.audio

Published on Dec 20, 2017 eightball

"BARD Synthesizers - IVAN is phosphor/vacuum tube asymmetric overdrive/distortion module for eurorack modular synthesizers.

IVAN's heart is Russian vacuum tube IV-15 which can act like soft/hard clipper, saturator, wave procesor."

'Ivan is an overdrive unit that uses tiny Vacuum Fluorescent Display to process incoming audio signals (yes, because it’s a triode!). It accepts DC coupled signals as well allowing it to operate as cool and nice indicator (still with useful AC coupled output). It offers a plenty of gain and hot 10V peak-to-peak output of asymmetrical triode-diode clipping.

Radical Frequencies Dual Precision Oscillator (LMS EE)

Published on Dec 20, 2017 Learning Modular

Playlist:

1.Radical Frequencies DPVCO 1/4: overview (LMS Eurorack Expansion Project)

The Radical Frequencies Dual Precision VCO features a pair of oscillator with excellent tracking (6 octaves is the claim) that go from slow LFOs up into very high frequencies. It offers both linear and exponential FM, pulse width modulation up into the audible range, and soft sync. The advantage of having two oscillators behind one panel is that it features a lot of intelligent normalization, as well as jacks with attenuators to plug in external signals. This first movie features a demo arpeggio showing off the major features, and then demonstrates each of its waveforms and major sections:

0:00 demo
2:51 specs & background
4:07 tuning range
5:13 pulse width modulation
5:58 square wave
7:06 sawtooth
7:45 triangle
8:35 sine
9:17 (repatching & retuning)
10:00 soft sync
11:06 preview of next two movies

For more details about using the Dual Precision VCO (as well as other modules I’ve made videos for), I encourage you to join the Learning Modular Patreon Tribe: https://www.patreon.com/LearningModular. 2. Radical Frequencies DPVCO 2/4: static FM (LMS Eurorack Expansion Project)
In this second movie on the Radical Frequencies Dual Precision VCO, I focus on dialing in frequency modulation using the front panel controls, without any external envelopes or VCAs. If you’d like a demo of the differences between linear and exponential FM – and what things like waveshape and offset mean to the resulting tuning – this movie is for you. Near the end, I also demonstrate pulse width modulation, including the great sound you get when you modulate it with an audio oscillator as well. Here is a breakdown of what’s covered when in this movie:

0:00 overview
0:46 triangle versus sine for carrier
1:04 entrainment
1:50 linear FM
6:49 exponential FM
12:11 pulse width modulation
13:18 combining techniques
13:51 cross-modulation

3. Radical Frequencies DPVCO 3/4: dynamic FM (LMS Eurorack Expansion Project)
In this third movie on the Radical Frequencies Dual Precision VCO, I focus on dynamic frequency modulation where I use an external envelope and VCA to dynamically change the FM depth for each note played. I compare linear versus exponential FM, showing where linear is good for tonal and sustained sounds while exponential is good at percussion as well as adding pluck or strike to the start of each note. Here is a breakdown of what’s covered when in this movie:

0:00 overview
0:38 the basic patch
1:20 dialing in enveloped linear FM
3:45 enveloping exponential FM
4:54 FM percussion sounds
5:47 adding an FM strike or pluck
7:49 layering techniques

4. Radical Frequencies DPVCO 4/4: soft sync (LMS Eurorack Expansion Project)
In this fourth and final movie on the Radical Frequencies Dual Precision VCO, I focus on its soft sync function. I explain how sync works, compare soft and hard sync, and play around with creating alternate timbres and glitchy enveloped sounds using soft sync. Here is a breakdown of the final movie:

0:00 an overview of sync
2:28 tuning the master lower than the slave
3:26 tuning the master higher than the slave
5:01 soft sync variations
6:54 enveloping the slave’s pitch (including hard sync comparison)
9:18 layering techniques

There are a couple of very dynamic parts in the video, please be careful with the volume the first time you listen.

Ho, ho, ho!

Someone planted an idea in my head the other day, and I just could not let this go and leave for Europe.... without doing a Christmas song. :)

This is not your ordinary cheerful Christmas tune, it is more of a freeform experimental interpretation of the old classic "deck the halls" melody played in minor key.

The modular is doing all the work on this one, Braids droning away with a 3xSaw through the ripples filter, Rings is doing the melody played by me on the beatstep, a heavily chopped up jingle bells rhythm sample in the morphagene plus some sequenced bass/drum/beats sort of in the BIA by the Octone.

FX, RE-20 + keeley electronic caverns shimmer reverb + delay.

Arturia CMI V Tutorials

Tutorials | CMI V - Episode 4 : Spectral Synthesis

"Multi-award winning music software & hardware developer Arturia have released a tutorial series on the finer details of CMI V, their recently unveiled recreation of the Fairlight CMI: the 'mother of all samplers' that changed the face of contemporary music production.

Presented by Glen Darcey, this 4 part video series covers the key concepts of the instrument, letting users quickly familiarize themselves with its features and functions. This series includes a quick tour of the instrument, shows you how to load and edit samples, and explores the new Time and Spectral synthesis possibilities.

While ludicrously powerful and undeniably revolutionary, the original Fairlight CMI was typical of early digital instruments: sluggish, temperamental, and notoriously difficult to program. Despite these quirks, whole studios based their sound around the unparalleled capabilities of this revolutionary sampler, and many now-legendary record producers made the CMI their signature mix ingredient.

Reborn for the modern production age, CMI V has been revamped, reworked, and reimagined to create an equally ground-breaking instrument, built to inspire today’s musicians just as the original did since its 1979 release. Building on the classic sampler functions that are now second nature to most 21st century musicians and producers, and true to their form of revitalizing retro instruments with powerful new features, Arturia have created a living, breathing, true synth & sampling instrument.

Sculpt harmonics and gain access to vast waveform controls with the Spectral Synth; import audio and create your own personalized sample-scapes; and take command of 32 harmonic sound envelopes in the additive Time Synth. CMI V is truly the triumphant return of a giant, a fitting tribute to the monumental sampler that inspired generations of musicians, and turned the whole industry on its head.

CMI V is one of four new stunning vintage instrument recreations that are included in V Collection 6 - Arturia's groundbreaking retro synth and keyboard package. Containing 21 instruments, each modeled after a keyboard that changed the face of music as we know it. Within V Collection, you'll find meticulously modeled analog synths, digital powerhouses, incredible performance keyboards, acoustic and electric pianos, organs, a string machine, and even a sampler.

Breathing life back into the most iconic keyboard instruments of all time, V Collection is the ultimate creativity launchpad, and an essential studio tool for the modern music producer."

via the seller: "I bought this Novation Peak a couple weeks ago based on it being MPE-compatible (Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression). It's virtually n-e-w (I think I have to spell it like that or eBay has a fit). But, to be honest and not over-promte I'm listing it as Used rather that N-E-W Other. My purpose was to use the Novation Peak with a Roli Seaboard Rise. It does the MPE thing for the most part, but it doesn't integrate as tightly as I'd like in that regard. For one thing, I haven't got the MPE pitch bend to really work properly with the Roli. The Novation Peak works fine with 'regular' keyboards, of which I have several. And because I have several keyboards and a bunch 'o modules I don't really need another sound module that doesn't completely do what I bought it for. As a regular 8-voice polyphonic instrument it sounds great, really great. I'm tempted to keep it anyway, but I'm not really going to use it like I wanted to."
