ALEXANDER NEVSKY / PROKOFIEV / THEREMIN

copperleaves | February 04, 2011 | 1 likes, 0 dislikes
Alexander Nevsky is one of the great heros of Russian history. He is reputed to have driven an army of Livonian Knights (German "warrior monks") from Russia in the year 1241. The decisive battle was on the ice of the frozen lake Peipus (in Russian "Chudsko-Pskovskoe ozero") in the spring of 1242.
The Russian film director, Sergei Eisenstein, made a movie of this epic battle in 1938 and hired composer Sergei Prokofiev to write the music for it. ALEXANDER NEVSKY is considered by many experts to be one of the great movies of all time, and the piece of music in this video (transcribed for theremin) is from that film.
Following the Battle On The Ice, there are hundreds of dead soldiers lying in the snow and a young maiden walks out onto the frozen lake looking for her lover, and sings, "I shall go across the snow-clad field, I shall fly above the field of death, I shall search for valiant warriors there....."
The composer Prokofiev had spent some time in Hollywood in the 1930's, and had made a study of the new science of soundtracking for film. Director Eisenstein said of Prokofiev, "He is a man of our time and a man of the screen. He understands how the screen can reveal not only the outer appearance of things but their inner nature as well. He is able to dress objects in sound and instrumentation, bringing them to life with shifts in tone and timbre, adding an emotional dimension to images through his orchestration".
Prokofiev later took his score for ALEXANDER NEVSKY and made a cantata out of it for mezzo-soprano, chorus and orchestra. The interesting thing about the composition is that the music, as powerful as it is, does not overshadow the film. It complements it perfectly while remaining one of the composer's most enduring works.
The theremin in this video is the 1929 RCA that was once the property of the late Hollywood thereminist, Dr. Samuel Hoffman."

ARP 2600 2601 v1.0 with 3620 keyboard

via this auction
"The “orange and black” 2601 is the last 2600 version produced by ARP. It is the most reliable version, an update to the more common grey version. None of the modules are set in epoxy, making it more serviceable in the long run...
Here are a list of the specific repairs:
4 slider tips were repaired with identical replacements.

NOS handle was fitted (quasi-identical)
NOS keyboard connector was fitted
Some Polyfusion-specific internal normalization was removed
Polyfusion front panel gate input removed and capped
2 Polyfusion connection inputs removed from the left side and patched
(one tiny hole on upper right panel left (see pics)
new orange LED in the power indicator
New capacitors on the power supply
Tolex on both cases was cleaned and refinished.

Filter upgrade :
the 4072 filter was upgraded to correct the “error” causing the filter to open to a maximum of around 12k, now it's nice and bright when fully open (28k apparently). The filter kept its original character, just with extended range. The upgraded 4072 is a very nice sounding filter, just as good and useful as the previous moog-like filter Arp used, but a bit more unique and exclusive!

The reverb tank was changed top a looong type 9 NOS replacement. The first 2600s' had this type of tank and are known for their longer, fuller reverb.

Haible (JH.) String Filter Prototype
"This is my Prototype of the "String Filter" Project
It's tested, adjusted, and consists of two populated PCBs
For building a complete synthesizer module, some diy work is still needed, connecting front panel elements (not included), but the populated and tested PCB will certainly make the DIY efforts a lot easier than usual."
Phisynth - Max/MSP Synth Featured on Cycling '74

via Philippe
"This instrument was created as part of our latest dance spectacle Absorbe-moi
The starting idea was to create an instrument dealing with sound synthesis and reacting directly with the movement of the 2 dancers. Their movement is tracked live and analyzed by another computer, then the main characteristics of it (X position, Y position, Height, Width, X gravity, Y gravity, speed and luminosity) is smoothed and transmitted as normalized data into the synth and used (of course with some latency) to modulate any selectable parameter of the sound in real time (external modulation sources 1 to 8).
Inspired by some of the tools I regularly use and love (Access Virus TI, Nord Modular G2, Native Instruments FM8 and Massive) I soon began to build my dream synth, with all the features I wanted, some of those only partially available in the products mentioned above.

KORG M1R-EX M1 rack mounted synth

"The Korg M1R is pretty much an M1 without the keyboard. It can do everything the M1 can. The layout is similar to the M1 and it even has the M1's built in sequencer.
The M1R EX is a M1R with double the internal Multisound ROM (8 meg vs. 4 meg). This is the same Multisound ROM found in the T-Series. The M1R EX was sold new and as an upgrade for the standard M1R. Because of this the synth may or may not be labeled as an EX model.

Since the M1R EX is the top of the line rackmount synth in the M/T Series line it is sought after by those who want the "M/T Sound" but don't have space for the full sized board."

BOSS RPS-10 Digital Pitch Shift/Delay

"Ideal for Ultra-High Speed Pitch Shifting and Superior Sound Quality
The RPS-10 is a single unit which combines digital pitch shifting and delay functions in its compact dimensions. The heart of this machine is a newly-developed high-performance custom LSI which allows the RPS-10 to have a flat frequency response of up to 15kHz as well as ultra-high speed shifting with virtually no difference between the direct and effect sounds. Pitch shift is continuously variable between -1 to +1 octaves. Along with harmony effects, wide-ranging sounds can be created, from pitch-shifted chorus effects to octave effects. There is even a tuner output terminal for instant visual confirmation of the amount of pitch shift when connected to a Chromatic Tuner (TU-12 etc.). In addition, a keyboard control allows the amount of pitch shift to be controlled from a keyboard which is connected to the unit. Delay time is variable over the range of 25-800ms. Applicable to both modes is a INV position to produce a "reversed tape" sound." from Bossarea.com

VINTAGE FARFISA VIP-233 COMBO ORGAN with Strings

"Second only to Vox in popularity during the 1960s, Italian manufacturer Farfisa is probably the only other really well-known purveyor of Combo Organs.
