--Black, Blue and Green paint job--

I've built upwards of 40-50 machines for different bands, musicians and producers across the world on commission (and through eBay) over the years who would assure you that I know what I'm doing ~ check my feedback! These various instruments are being used in live performances and studio production. This keyboard is not only noisy, but made to be musical. Most of my circuit bent instruments with musicians and performers in mind... and, in this case, also for everybody else who enjoys the endless amount of glitching sounds the Casio SA series keyboards can make.

About the features!
[All are demonstrated in video below]

Glitch trigger:
On the left of the keyboard is a large knob and a button; the knob corresponds to intensity of the glitch that will result from a button press. For instance, if the knob is turned all the way to the right it will make a full connection when the button is pressed which cuts out the sound momentarily and will either result in a heavy glitch when often will continue indefinitely, or a crash (turn the keyboard off & on again). While the keyboard glitches it's also possible to modify what's happening by adjusting the knob and pressing the button again. Pressing the glitch button while the knob is not turned up fully will result in, often, a shorter glitch which does end and then brings the keyboard back to it's original status.

When playing the keyboard, playing the demo song or a rhythm, or (if the knob is turned up higher) while no sounds are happening, glitching will start (may take a few presses if no sounds are going off). Most commonly the resulting glitches are a modification of the sound coming from the keyboard at the time of the button press, but there's really no way to tell what to expect. The video I've made for this keyboard provides some examples of what you can achieve with it. Random patterns, sounds, drones, repetitive noises, mellow slowed down tones... it's essentially limitless.

[To stop glitching/if keyboard stops sounding, just turn it off and back on]

Distortion/feedback knob:
This is the knob to the right of the keyboard. When turned it causes interesting noise/feedback, and while playing the keyboard or rhythms it causes some heavy variable distortion/feedback depending on its position. This mod by itself can transform some of the cheezy sounds of this keyboard into some sort of distorted squealing monster.

Distortion opto theremin:
So on the very right of the keyboard there's a photo cell and a switch above it (bottom switch). When you engage the switch it turns the opto theremin on. The more light hitting the photo cell = the more distortion you get. Be creative with it! Wave your hand over it while you're playing the keyboard to produce sweeping distortions by changing the amount of light hitting the photo cell! A strobe light can cause some crazy pulsating distortion/modulation...

Crunchy/light distortion switch:

This is the top switch on the right of the keyboard. It does what it says and creates a different sounding distortion when engaged. Sounds heavy and very noisy if used in combination with the other distortion; pitch of this distortion slowly steps upward when a key is pressed as well. Goes great with simple rhythms.

Hidden Voices switch:
Fun mod for the SA-2. The middle switch on the right of the keyboard allows you to access 25 additional keyboard voices not included on the stock SA-2. To access them, you engage the switch and use the first 5 lowest keys on the keyboard as you would use the 1-5 buttons to select a voice. So, F = 1, F# = 2, G = 3, G# = 4, A = 5. As seen in the video, by pressing F(1) followed by A(5) while the switch is engaged selects a Jazz Organ voice. After selecting a voice you just flip the switch back. I'm not sure what to name each of the voices available with these buttons, so you can explore :P

RCA Video output:
So here's something that you generally won't find with many other bent devices. Basically, it's just a simple RCA jack on the left of the keyboard at the bottom of the speaker grate. This can be plugged into a TV, projector... anything that accepts RCA video (though I wouldn't suggest sticking it into your big expensive 60" plasma screen.. I offer no guarantees on this!) I have used this on various TVs (large and small, CRT, LCD) and on projectors; it looks pretty cool. The video demonstration doesn't do any great justice to the appearance, but shows you what it does.

The visuals that it creates are, essentially, horizontal black and white waves/lines Higher pitched sounds create lines that are thinner/closer together. Smoother preset sounds (like square and sinewave based voices) are more clear solid lines, while crunchy or distorted voices are more dotted and scraggly. Combinations of notes and other sounds cause interesting clashing wave forms and things. Would be great for live performances. It's somewhat memorizing to watch this while the machine is glitching... random visual patterns that correlate to the sound.

Other features:

Two buttons [to left of distortion knob on keyboard] added for triggering drum sounds. (Left/blue is Kick, Right/green is Snare)

A 1/8" output jack is located on the right of the keyboard for plugging into an amp/mixer/recording device/headphones/etc...

Speaker on/off switch (Left of keyboard, bottom of speaker grate) for when using output jack.

Blue power indicator LED at the top of the speaker grate.

*This keyboard runs on 4AA batteries. The battery compartment cover is included."

"For your consideration is this late 1970’s uber rare Fairlight digital sampling keyboard controller serial number SNC088040 rev2. It appears as if someone has recently painted the wooden cover black. It is made utilizing a metal frame with wood panels, it’s all there but rough, making new wooden panels should be easy for one with wood working expertise and a little white paint. The keyboard and electronics inside are surprisingly nice and clean and appear to be all-original. There is a broken key however looks like a good candidate for gluing. The components and internal parts all look clean and original; the screws that hold the cover to the keyboard are missing. A fantastic start for those interested in a Fairlight rig or perfect for restoring an existing Fairlight..."

Old Crow's Oberheim OB-X Clone Project

via oldcrow on Muff's

First post with initial diagram above: "Ever since playing MC's OB-X at AHMW, I got it into my head to try and make one--gotta be cheaper than ebay! This meant making my own voice cards, first in the original form factor to test first on a "host board" to power and provide pots and switches for the voice board under test, then later in an actual OB-X. Since the vintage cards used CEM3310s and discrete everything else, I made the EGs in non-custom form using JH's VC_HADSR as a design reference (it was inspired by the 3310). It works on a breadboard, so they're in the CAD schematic and the "hard" part of the layout is done: the VCOs. I squashed the circuits a bit in order to open up some room on the board as my EGs were going to be a tad larger than a single 16-pin chip; they each use 4 chips, 4 transistors and a handful of passives. Throughhole parts as my eyes have gotten too bad to hand solder SMT very well (but I have a full SMT factory line for that if I ever make more than 8 of these ;)

The CA3080s are replaced by 13700s, which are dual 3080s. I do not bother with the darlington buffers. The CA3086 transistor array is replaced by two LS318s, and those mount over SMT TC resistors (see A3A, A3B in image). I do use some SMT bypass caps as the original board features no bypass caps whatsoever, save for the DC filter caps on the local voltage regulators."

Follow-up with the pics below: "Slowly the master vision takes shape: here is a nearly-finished host board with a fully-populated carrier board mounted to it, and the carrier board loaded with a slot adapter and attached crowbx voice board."

For those not familiar with Old Crow, you can find his site here. He has been most often referred to here on MATRIXSYNTH for his KORG Polysix battery fix.

"The Malekko Richter series of modules offer the same great sound, ergonomics, musicality, and quality that made the Wiard 300 series legendary, at a fraction of the cost and size in Eurorack modular format.

The Malekko/Wiard Oscillator is a great-sounding, solid analog Oscillator/LFO with some serious tricks up its sleeve.

Fine and Coarse frequency controls are provided. Volt per octave and exponential (with attenuator) CV frequency inputs are provided. An output for each waveform is provided (Sine/Triangle/Square/Saw). A second series of outputs are provided for phase-modulated versions of the Triangle, Square, and Saw waveforms. The phase of the 2nd series of waveforms is determined by the Phase control, along with the Phase CV input (with attenuator).

Many great modulation effects can be produced by using the various outputs of this Oscillator in a patch. Pull out the large Fine/LFO control to enter low range, and your Oscillator becomes a phase-modulated LFO! Set the 2nd series of outputs to a 90 degree offset and use external inverters to achieve full quadrature output.

One of our favorite patches with this module is modulating another oscillator's frequency and sending the modulated oscillator's output back to the Oscillator's Phase Mod input. Phase-Mod-Synced FM!

The Triangle 2 wave tends to create extra harmonics at various phase offsets, but the Sine wave provided by the Malekko Wiard Oscillator is one of the purest of any analog Oscillator.

Note: Tri2 has added harmonics.

Four Waveform Outputs: Triangle, Square, Saw and Sine
Additional Dual Outputs for Triangle, Square and Saw useful for Phase Modulation
1v/oct CV Input
Attenuated CV Input for Frequency

Noisebug (RSS)

"NOTE: The "Phat" version is 3HP wide, so you can fill all the holes in your rack even if you have an odd number of HP.

The original 2HP / 3HP 2x6 buffered multiple!

Multiples are handy, but the more ways you split your signal the weaker it gets.

The Multiplicity VI is a buffered multiple; every single output jack regenerates your signal. Whether you are splitting audio or control voltages, there is no degradation.

Multiplicity's channels are cascaded, giving you flexibility in how many ways you split your signal. Plug a signal into input 1 and it will be available from all 6 outputs. Add a different signal into input 2 and it breaks the chain; signal 1 comes out 3 outputs and signal 2 is available at the remaining 3.

Multiplicity VI has Cascade In / Out jacks on the back so that several modules can be cascaded together without sacrificing front-panel connections. Connect several modules together and it's like having one giant spread-out buffered multiple module. You can also use it to provide a "default" signal that is available when you aren't using the Multiplicity for anything else.

All that flexibility is crammed into a skinny module which is available in either the original 2HP version or the new "Phat" 3HP version. Replace all those non-buffered multiples or fill up extra spaces in your rack with something handy.

Specifications:
•Power supply: +/- 12 VDC (reverse-polarity protected!)
•Power draw: 16ma / 16ma
•Width: 2HP or 3HP
•Depth: 1.77in / 45mm

Includes:
•Multiplicity VI Module
•Doepfer-style Power Cable

The patents are printed on the top of the unit. I was curious what they might be so I did a quick search at http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.htm and found the following for each:

4246823 - Waveshape generator for electronic musical instruments

Abstract
In a wave shape generator of the memory reading type, a waveshape memory stores sample values of a wave each value being represented by an integral address. A coefficient memory stores coefficients for nth order interpolation. Unknown intermediate sample values not stored in the wave shape memory represented by non-integral addresses and are approximated by multiplication of stored sample values of the waveshape and corresponding coefficient values on the basis of nth order interpolation. Use of the interpolation method assures smoothness of the wave shape with respect to time and thereby minimizes quantization noise while permitting use of relatively small memories.
