Boomstar 3003—OK Sek Rocks

"I guess your just what I needed, Boomstar 3003, to rock this LFO- crunched, "ring-back," synth hero grind. A touch of CLA2A and 3A here and there to rein in the squelchers, gives the ears a lucky break. No EQ, but after market pitch changes occur throughout, and a salting of "stadium" and "guitar room" make for indulgent fun at end.

Yamaha CS60 Analog Polyphonic Synthesizer - Presets Demo

Published on Jul 30, 2014 karmacomputer

"This is a very brief demo of the preset tones (patches) on the Yamaha CS60 Analog Polyphonic Synthesizer.
http://mattoverse.tumblr.com

Note: The resonance was set to off and the brilliance to the middle (nominal) position. Additionally, the synth is fully warmed up so the tuning issues you hear are a result of the oscillators needing to be tuned.

Audio was recorded direct at 24bit/44.1k through a Steinberg MR816X interface into Logic Pro X and dithered to 16 bit before being combined with the video in iMovie. Video was recorded with an iPhone 5 with a fisheye lens to enable the whole synth to be in the frame."

Zombies 1985 - A New Film by Tara Busch & Maf Lewis to Feature Synth Score by Tara & Benge

Many of you are likely familiar with Tara Busch & Benge, featured numerous times here on MATRIXSYNTH. It turns out Tara is a film maker as well as musician extraordinaire. She and Maf Lewis are currently seeking funding for their new film, Zombies 1985.   There's only 24 hours to go!  You'll find the campaign on Kickstarter here. The film will feature a live score composed by Benge & Tara. Brings back memories of John Carpenter who also composed the scores for his films on vintage analog synths. Definitely looking forward to this one.

Left: "Composers Tara Busch & Benge Edwards working together in the studio with John Foxx."

Below: Zombie Tara & Benge

Some details for the archives:

"A short film with live score set in 1985 about a self-obsessed man who fails to notice the Zombie Apocalypse happening around him.

OVERVIEW:

'Zombies 1985' is one in a series of short horror and science fiction films that are created to be performed with a live score. Here's an extract of a live performance for one of our previous films, "The Silence".

Zombies 1985" tells the story of greed and self obsession in 1980's Britain. The film will be created by the collective I Speak Machine, directed by Maf Lewis, score composed by Tara Busch and Benge Edwards, and featuring Lee Bane.

PLOT:
Steve is an upwardly mobile entrepreneur who believes he has come up with the next big thing - the next Rubik's Cube. 'It's going to be bigger than Betamax!'.

The film covers his journey home from a super successful day at the office where he's all but closed the biggest deal of his life. Just a couple of mobile phone calls on the way home and it's in the bag. However, as he races back to celebrate with his wife and kids, we witness his fall from apparent certain victory to increasing infuriation - everyone's suddenly stopped taking his calls. His anger and desperation boils over when he can't get anyone on the phone....not his secretary, his investors, or his wife. All the while, the Zombie Apocalypse is happening around him; he's just too self absorbed to notice it... until he gets home."

An Interview with Synth Artist Dan McPharlin on 7 Electrons

Many of you will recognize the creative works of Dan McPharlin from posts here on MATRIXSYNTH.  Terry of 7 Electrons wrote in to let us know they recently interviewed Dan.

"He's an artist primarily but is also a musician and synth head so there's some serious synth content in the interview. Also of interest to your readers, he contributed artwork to the moments lost project (by analog sweden) of music inspired by bladerunner."

Curious if the battery is dead and the presets have just been wiped out, or if something is actually damaged.

"This synth is mostly functional and was recently serviced; all keys work, white noise slider is a little dirty, all sliders recently cleaned. Sample and Hold triggers repeatedly, but doesn't output random, changing notes as it should. I believe this Axxe model has the 'Moog' filter. Previous owners put this synth through hell, and it appears rodents or a dog have gnawed on the wood ends. Seriously. This video is to present the sonic possibilities and character of this machine, not my playing potential. For sale on ebay now."

"Issues I'm aware of:

1. Sample and hold triggers repeatedly, but doesn't output random notes as it should.
2. White noise slider is a little dirty/scratchy
3. Low output not functional-high out put works fine.
4. Audio output produces a subtle, but noticeable high frequency "hiss". (Its not from the white noise generator)"

"This synthesizer is in excellent (mint) condition inside and out and includes custom maple wood side panels. This synthesizer was recently serviced (2011) and was given a clean bill of health by Wine Country Productions, the predominate experts in Sequential Circuits repair and sales (invoice included). This is one sweet sounding synthesizer with its dual oscillators, two different sequencers, onboard arpeggiator, glide/pitch wheels, poly-modulation and has 100 memory patches to store your own sounds along with 100 preset voices.

The P600 has two oscillators per voice with sawtooth, triangle and variable pulse waveforms. The oscillators can be individually tuned or synched together. The P600 was the first available synth to implement MIDI. The P600 is great for creating analog effects, swells and drones. Its big brother is the legendary Prophet 5 and similar quality VCF and VCA sections of the Prophet 5 can be found here. The P-5’s Poly-Mod section has also been passed onto the P600."

Emulator X3 Sampling Synthesizer Simply The Best

Published on Jul 30, 2014 DigitalSamples

A look back at the Emulator X3 promo video.

"Emulator X3 is known as E-MU's most powerful software-sampler ever created after 40 years of synthesis experience following the success of its successors, Emulator X and Proteus X. This is the 3rd and last version of their great software sampler that inspires most audio enthusiasts and musicians who love to record, create and chop their own samples from scratch and design a unique blend of sounds.

Emulator X3 new sampling technology provides users the the best MIDI control of any soft synth in the market allowing you to map control messages that supports program and bank changes, which means multiple banks of sounds can be loaded. Featuring Xstream™ 24-bit/192 kHz, Streaming Engine, sound quality is totally unmatched using E-MU's patented pitch interpolation and precision 32-bit floating point processing. Unlike Emulator X and Proteus X, this is the only sampling tool that has native support on 32-bit and 64-bit applications both for Windows XP, Vista and is indeed compatible to run on Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems."

via Wikipedia:

"Following E-MU's decision to end sales and production of its hardware sampler line in 2003, Emulator X was released as the company's first entry into the software sampler market in 2004.[1] Emulator X2 was released in 2006,[3] followed by the third and final incarnation, Emulator X3, in 2009.[4] The product has since been discontinued[5] and is no longer available to purchase from either E-MU or its parent company, Creative Technology."

Welcome to the first video in my new Gear Spotlight series. The goal is to create a song using one electronic instrument each week. I wanted to start with a challenge, so here is my song, composed entirely on a Arturia Microbrute. One voice, no presets. Each sound completely made from scratch.

It took a while and some research to figure out how to get the drum parts sounding close to something drum-ish, but in the end I think it all turned out good!"

Make Noise modDemix 2014

Published on Jul 30, 2014 MAKEN0ISE

"The modDemix features 2 identical direct-coupled balanced modulator circuits that may be used together or independently for Ring Modulation, VCA, Mixer, Signal Multiplication, Voltage Controlled Polarization, Attenuation and more.

Unique balanced modulator circuit turns OFF around zero volts at the Carrier/ Control INput, making the circuit behave well as a VCA

STRENGTH is a Combo Knob, with nothing patched to STRENGTH CV IN, it works as a standard panel control, setting Level. With signal patched to STRENGTH CV IN, it works as an attenuator, setting the strength of the modulation.

Both circuits feed a summing stage, allowing the module to be used as a voltage controlled mixer

AUXiliary IN allows for the stacking of multiple modDemix and/ or Optomix to create larger mixes

Able to introduce warm distortions to audio signals, sounds like no other VCA or Ring Mod

MAX BLINKENLIGHTS, 8 LEDs packed into a small 6hp module

Pairs well with MATHS and Optomix
