Som pics of the Seattle Synth Meet 2016 hosted on Sunday, January 17, at Substantial.
Great venue and great hosts. Big thanks to Tom, Cindy and Shawn for hosting!
Update: and some pics via Larry Kleinke, aka Computer Controlled:
"'In The Beginning' is an older synthesizer composition I finally realized on what I could not for the life of me remember which synths I used (Memorymoog.). My style of synthesizer music could be Ambient, Chillout, or Space Music; but I suppose it doesn't even matter. Please "show more" for more info. I hope you have a good subwoofer. I have set this performance to a 'video.'"
"Wondering how to begin designing effects in Audulus? You can't get more simple than a Tremolo.
A Tremolo effect (known to Fender enthusiasts as "Vibrato" but we'll get to that one later) is a modulated amplitude (i.e. volume) level. Electrically, this is usually done by driving a lamp or LED with an LFO circuit, while the audio path runs through a light-dependent resistor (LDR). The Light + LDR makes an Optocoupler. This isolates the LFO from the circuit and keeps your audio path super clean.
In Audulus, however, none of that is necessary. All you need to make a Tremolo is an LFO and a Level node. Apply the LFO's output to the Level node, run your audio in and out, and bam, you have a Tremolo!
This tutorial also shows you some beginning steps you can take to modify the LFO: adding to the signal increases the "floor," or how low the volume gets. Multiplying the signal (really, dividing, since we're multiplying by a number between 0-1), will expand or shrink its overall range.
The 2 Minute Tip series breaks apart topics on Audulus into bite-sized chunks. I don't talk during the tutorials (though there are a few notes that pop up), and this is so that international viewers who don't understand English well don't feel left out. Familiarize yourself with the node menu and my navigation won't be so mystifying. In the future, we'll develop a finger press indicator so you can see where I'm tapping.
"Well, actually this is a single E950, recorded in one take with output through the E580. Clock is from the E102 to Brains/Pressure Points along with Rene, with CV outs from both to the E950. Audio output from the E950 goes to the E580, and Delay and Tap Outs to the WMD Multimode VCA A and B input channels. CV A is from an A-143-2 envelope and CV B is modulated from the E950 Digital Out, which also hits the Offset input of the E580.
Headphones are best, but remember, it’s just noise. :P"
"Of all the 26 products in the Plan B line, this was the only one which tanked. Few understood it, but those who did got more than 1. While it is not being exercised close to it's full potential in this video, you can get a description of what it was capable of here:
"Two Q107 filters in series - highpass followed by lowpass, a bit of resonance on both, simulating a Korg MS20 kind of thing. Recorded straight via an Apogee Duet into an iPhone 5. The VCO outputs are attenuated quite a bit before they hit the filters to reduce crazy distortion, and it still sounds pretty badass. i'm controlling both filters' cutoff with a Q125 Signal Generator into a mult, just so i can control both filters with one knob. Sequencer is the Q960/Q963 with a Q128 Switch to break up the triggers and a Q961 to set the gate time, and a Q117 S&H to hold the CVs over the non-triggered steps."
"It allows you to compose and manipulate 64-step sequences and upload in browser directly to soundcloud. I'd be happy for you to post the above on your blog if you find it relevant."
"This is an amazing synth module is a faithful recreation of the original Minimoog, with several impressive innovations. Its onboard programmable effects processor including delay and other must-haves gives this baby huge sound. Adjustable velocity control of filter and amp sections adds more expression than the original would allow you. Built-in filter overload, external input to filter, and best of all, 12-voice polyphony make this just about the most formidable Minimoog clone ever made. Extensive midi implementation gives you control over even more features.
I updated the firmware on this unit two years ago. This is difficult to do if you don't have access to a system running Windows XP (so bear that in mind if you're considering buying a similar unit from anyone else!). The firmware update solves many of the initial bugs which users compalined about early on..."
"It's a wonderful bass oriented synth, almost like having three TB 303's in one box that could be played monophonically, polyphonically (for chords), or in unison for a monster four oscillator sound. It's built like a tank, is completely analog (no DCO's here), and has an incredibly robust step sequencer with pattern chaining and auto fill (part A or part B for every sequence). There's a myriad of sync options as well for the sequencer including MIDI and analog triggers so it will integrate perfectly into a modular synth set up. Also, it makes a fantastic and compact MIDI controller.
It's a bit of a sleeper box but the sound quality is really good and is capable of making some amazing bass patches and really aggressive sequences with the onboard distortion."
Dave Smith strikes again with a new offering for modular synthesizer users — the DSM02 Character Module. It’s a sound designer’s tool kit of five unique digital effects for shaping, twisting, and mangling sound in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. These effects, Girth, Air, Decimate, Hack, and Drive form the Character section of DSI’s acclaimed Prophet 12 and Pro 2 synthesizers and contribute to their distinctive tone in a big way.
“Girth” provides low-frequency harmonic enhancement for adding weight and density.
“Air” provides high-frequency harmonic enhancement for adding definition and presence.
“Decimate” performs sample rate reduction for adding lo-fi grunge.
“Hack” is a bit crusher capable of trashing an otherwise clean signal nearly beyond recognition.
“Drive” adds overdrive and saturation, with warmth at one end of the knob and harmonic overload at the other.
Plug It and Play It
The DSM02 is a 14 HP Eurorack-format module with interconnections made using 3.5 mm phone jacks. Two independent audio inputs and two independent audio outputs with shared control allow mono or stereo operation. A 24-bit, 96 kHz resolution digital signal path provides uncompromising signal fidelity.
Inject Some Mojo into Your System
If you’re looking to take your modular system into new sonic territory, the DSM02 may be just the ticket. It’s a fast and affordable way to inject your system with some serious mojo from two of the world’s most in-demand synths.

This is the Korg Polysix with the Kiwisix upgrade. This demo features both original patches and factory presets. The main advantage of the Polysix is the 3-BBD chip ensemble effect, which shares the likes of ARP Solina and many others.
Another really cool feature is the external filter control input. No, it cannot filter external sounds. But it can take voltages from external devices like a sequencer and use that to step-modulate the filter.
The Polysix is also good at arpeggios and bass. What's better than bass?...more bass!...you can stack all six voices in unison mode for insane bass action.
There is a trick you can do to achieve filter high-resonance self-oscillation, and nothing else. To defeat the main oscillators, set the OSC to Pulse Width and set the Width to maximum. Make sure the sub osc is also turned off.
0:00 Choir sound, filter self-oscillation FX
0:28 to 2:24 Filter is being modulated, via the external filter control jack, by a control voltage coming from the Beatstep Pro
2:24 to 3:22 String Ensemble
ALL synthesizer sounds originate from the Polysix. A Volca Beats provided rhythm backing, Big Sky and Timefactor for effects. All tracks were recorded direct to Cubase SX3 via E-mu 1616. NO additional production, eq, compressors, mastering, etc. was used. "

"'A Nordic Perusal' is a synthesizer composition I realized on the great Clavia Nord Lead 1. My style of synthesizer music could be Ambient, Chillout, or Space Music; feel free to make up your own mind or I might invent some crazy name for my style. Please "show more" for more info. I hope you have a good subwoofer. I have set this performance to a 'video.'"
"Here's a tune I made in the OP-1 yesterday. It features internal synths and drums with a sample bank of my voice added through the internal microphone. I am filming how I navigate around my 1-Bar to 8-Bar loops for playback and recording. Sorry for the shaky camera (I was moving the floor a bit while recording). Years later and the OP-1 is as crafty a tool as it has always been!"
"A split patch on the Synthesizers.com modular synthesizer, featuring the Q116 Ring Modulator on the left hand, and the Q117 Sample and Hold on the right hand."

"Join us June 9-11, 2016 in Asheville, NC for ContinuuCon, the first ever Haken Continuum conference. We will celebrate this uniquely expressive musical instrument with concerts, workshops, lectures and more. The natural beauty of the Asheville area combines with its deep heritage of surprisingly advanced musical thought (once home to musical luminaries such as Bela Bartok and Bob Moog) to provide the perfect location for this conference."
"First patch playing with Feedback consol from the harvestman no other sound source.... just Feedback... some delay & reverbs. Some colors from the Bionic Lester and Malgorythm MKII. Modulation by Double Andore v1 & MKII
Maths wogglebug & pressure points also used."
"Okay! Now for something completely different! Warning: Loud noises, feedback, distortion and sonic destruction. Not for the weak of heart or ear. Better audio (hehehe) here: http://soundcloud.com/user7621213/buc...

"In this video give a general introduction to using Shimmer. It's not totally comprehensive, for that you should read the manual on Valhalla's website, but this tutorial should give you a decent idea of what the controls do, and how to get various effects out of it."
Korg Minilogue - some patches I designed and some messing around
Published on Jan 17, 2016 Daniel Davis
"A few patches and sequences I've made the last couple of days. Also, at the end I mess with an INIT patch and make some noise. The ML is run through the Boss DD-500 digital delay, but I try to demonstrate each patch raw as well.
This is a great little synthesizer. I'm sure people will be bored to death very soon of it, though. It's going to sell a brazillion unites, and basically be the next DX7 or Microkorg. Personally, I think that's a good thing."
"This listing is for an extremely rare YAMAHA CS-80 Vintage Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer. To add to its rarity, this particular CS-80 comes directly from the personal gear collection of legendary musician, Eddie Van Halen. This synth has been part of Ed's recording and touring rig and was in use up until the late 90's...
PHYSICAL CONDITION - Very Good. The outer case is a little beat up, some covering peeling at spots, the internal unit has some cigarette burns, a few minor blemishes, but it all looks very good overall considering the age. All knobs and sliders and buttons are intact and solid. Clean!
WORKING CONDITION - Very Good. A small group of about 6 keys around the middle C have some movement side to side. This is believed to have been due to an intentional modification done by Ed, we are not sure why. It does not affect any of the normal functions of the keys. The unit has recently been serviced by a veteran Hollywood technician. All the various electronic functions have been tested and are working properly."
"ARP 2600P Synthesizer with 3604P Keyboard
Comes with keyboard connection cable (original) and power cable (not original)
Up for auction is the incredible ARP 2600P Synthesizer with 3604P Keyboard. This is a functioning unit (with the exception of the issues listed below) and is cosmetically in great shape for being over 40 years old!
With minimal restoration this classic analog synthesizer could be restored to is original glory.
Serial Numbers: 26958 (synth) 36958 (keyboard)
Known Issues: Reverb unit is not functioning, Sine Wave normal on VCO-1 not functioning, Internal speakers not functioning, Cable between keyboard and synth unit works but has intermittent connection, crackling sound on sliders (will go away after being exercised)"
"STEINER CRUMAR EVI is an monophonic analog synthesizer with unique breath controller
invented by Nyle Steiner (he also produced excellent synth like Synthacon,Microcon etc).
STEINER CRUMAR EVI has 2 osillators,3waves( Sawtooth, Square, Rectangular ) selectable and doubled.
Analog synth module has 5knob (Volume, Breath Level, Resonance, S.E.D. ( Spectral Energy Distribution ), Tune)
4 Switches for Wave select and Touch Modulation(ON/OFF), and Signal Output.
Breath Controller has four playing keys and unique octave shift roller(8 octave) ,
and 3knob (Tune, Scale, Portamento), 3adjustment (T M sens,Breath zero,sens),
bottom side has metal sensor for Touch Modulation.
STEINER CRUMAR EVI 's sound is very fat and warm pure analog synth sound like Mini-Moog,
It has very deep bass to sharp analog lead sound!
This item is in mint condition and works like new."
"This is one beast of a synth! Analog all the way controlled by DCOs oh and its bright yellow too!!It has been likened to the Waldorf Microwave for its capabilities and sound architecture.
An opportunity to acquire something rare that will not come up often for sale and offer something different to your creativity. Its a UK built synth in its entirety.
One minor fault: the lead screen doesn't show the number fully however this does not affect function and has never bothered me."
"Recreating by mistake some of the famous words of R2D2.
Little eurorack synth featuring Make Noise Wogglebug, Flame Talking Synth, Doepfer A-174 joystick."
"Just taking a listen through the presets of this rare vintage drum machine by Nomad. It features 12 rhythms with tempo and hard/soft control which filters the sound.
"The hive mind of the net has awoken and built itself many avatars. How will the old inhabitants react to this new form of being? Will the old way of life be destroyed, or shall we embrace this machine? Or will it, in its infinite growing knowledge, force its will on us?

"'Night of Color' is an older synthesizer composition I realized on the great Memorymoog (among other synths.) See this post for a playlist with four new videos featuring sounds from the original Clavia Nord Lead. The first video went up yesterday so if you've already seen it you can skip it of course. The other four just went up today.
"The first use of the new power supply, a unit with variable output. My normal Neon supply is 200v DC fixed. The rack modules and the tabletop 3 lamp unit were run at 172v, the two part device atop the piano was run at 200 from the normal supply. The range of variations is astounding and I look forward to future experiments. For this one 6 different musical parts. Low drone, two part higher voiced chord partial, two tonal rhythmic elements, and a melodic phrase."
Note the flat panels going into the case. Check out the Karl Welty label below for a previous video of it.
