Improvisation LXIII: Crescendi

Published on Apr 9, 2016 Sacred Synthesis

"I often use YouTube as a sort of musical notebook, a place to keep musical ideas that I intend to develop later into actual compositions. This improvisation is a typical example. By no means do I consider it a polished composition, but only a rough sketch with plenty of blotches.

The primary purpose of this piece was to practice crescendi (or crescendos) using one soft patch on the Poly Evolver that builds and another on the Prophet '08 that meets it at its high point. Pardon the audio annoyances for the first minute or so, but the piece begins with the soft patch using a pedalpoint or long sustained bass note. This patch uses an LFO to very slowly modulate the filter cut off frequency. If you play it somewhat quickly, the LFO doesn't have a chance to open the filter, so that it remains dreamy and dark. If you sustain a note for more than a second, the filter begins to open. So, the crescendo is built into the patch and is controlled by the keyboard playing technique; no wheels, pedals, or tweaking are necessary. In order to create a dramatic crescendo, I simply sustain a chord on the first synthesizer, with the other synthesizer ready with the next chord progression; it's at that point that I switch from the PEK to the P '08, which has a PWM brass patch on the lower end of the manual and a sawtooth solo on the higher. A second Prophet '08 contributes an additional soft pad that I use together with the PEK.

This improvisation uses a combination of sounds that is very uplifting to play. I must confess, this late night session was among the most enjoyable I've ever had.

Instrumentation:
DSI Poly Evolver Keyboard
DSI Poly Evolver Rack
DSI Prophet '08 Keyboard (2)
DSI Prophet '08 Module
DSI Evolver Desktop
Hammond XPK 200L Pedalboard

Effects:

Alesis Nanoverb 2 for delay

New KORG Stageman 80 Rhythm PA Box Spotted at the Musikmesse

Spotted and shared by Gösta Wellmer at the Musikmesse.  Not seeing it on their site yet. Curious what it is and why it's so big.

Update: it's the KORG Stageman 80. I thought it looked familiar aside from the electribe knobs of course. The size is due to the built in speakers. It's a portable PA with built-in rhythm machine. From the site:

"You need rhythm for your solo performances. You have a rhythm machine, but you want your performance to feel more 'alive.'. The STAGEMAN 80 is a multi-function portable PA amp that will meet those needs. This unit contains a large number of high-quality rhythm patterns that can even respond to tempo change in realistic ways, due to KORG's new 'Real Groove Technology.' The STAGEMAN 80 can act as your personal drummer to support your live performances or practice sessions; you can even create a rhythm structure that's appropriate for your own song, while using a foot switch to control it in real time. With high-output, high-quality stereo speakers, it can also be used as a live PA. It additionally provides a recorder and audio player, as well as a full-featured mixer. The STAGEMAN 80 lets you perform with optimal sound backed by the ultimate rhythms.

"MOOG Opus 3 Vintage synth with heavy duty case. All keys and functions work properly, except the mode button switch on the articulator section. This is stuck in the first position. Other than that all sliders are great with minimal crackling and all pots are perfect. Pitch wheel and tuner work properly. Only a few scratches on the wood panels, and some green paint smear on the front plate. Comes with hard case and power cord."

Stroke Machine is a great app BTW. It's from ex-Waldorf's Wolfram Franke. It's as much of a standard synth as drum synth as well.

Live Korg Volca Jam 32 : .Microkorg & Korg Volca

Published on Apr 9, 2016

"In this jam I ended up stripping my gear down. I still own everything not in the video, I just wanted to make a Microkorg / Volca jam. I like how it forces me to use the Volca's features more. The Korg Volca beats supplies the beats. I locked time with FUNC to about 3 o clock and brought in some depth to create the drums stutter effects. The Korg Volca Bass supplies the intro pitch bend synth line and electro style bass. I used all 3 VCO's and mute function to get the most out of the Korg Volca Bass as possible. The Korg Volca Keys takes care of the lead sequence. The Microkorg is played live and takes of the pad and lead. Waves SuperTap 6 was used for Delay on the Korg Volca's and Microkorg.

Arturia Origin Synthesizer Faulty Encoder Replacement/Repair

Published on Apr 8, 2016 paulshillitomusic

This problem happens with other synths using encoders as well. He mentions oxidation and dust after 4:25. Sometimes rotating them 30, 60+ times will take care of the problem, so give it a try before replacing.

"In this video I show how to replace the faulty encoders which occur on the Arturia Origin desktop synth.

This could also apply to the keyboard versions too.

I replaced all 33 encoders with the Bournes PE16 series encoders which are of a higher quality than to factory fitted Chinese ones but you might just want to replace a few.

Cost for the parts was approx $70 including shipping and tax to the UK from the USA.

I show which ones are needed, the tools to do it as well as some of the issues i faced doing the job.

The new encoders are made by Bournes and the part numbers are as follows.

I got them from http://www.digikey.com/

The datasheet on the Bournes encoders is here https://www.bourns.com/pdfs/pec16.pdf"
