Yamaha Montage Day 2 - Exploring FM Bass and Leads

Published on Jun 20, 2016 Earmonkey Music

"I laid down a TR-8 (606 kit)/Simmons SDS 8 drum loop, and added a little kick from the Montage. Then just started laying down parts. Kept the Rhodes family simple. The basses are all FM. I just kind of messed with the knobs and performance settings. The way you can manipulate FM on the fly with the Montage is wonderful. So many different timbres. Tried to stick with FM for the leads as well, though some are layered with AWM. The Montage is just fun to play so this video is probably too long and it's full of mistakes. But it was fun for me :)"

"Just serviced: The synth got a very good cleaning, inside and out, and the aftertouch was restored.

AFTERTOUCH: I've had five JX-8Ps in my life and I can assure you 95% of the 8Ps out there have no working aftertouch due to their age unless the aftertouch was serviced and restored. This one I just restored last week. It's a tedious process that involves opening it up and removing the whole key bed. Then each of the 61 keys and 61 key springs are removed. (while the plastic keys are out, I gave them a sudsy soak overnight, then cleaned each key, one by one, dried, and re-lubed each with lithium grease). The multi-layered aftertouch strip is opened and each part cleaned or scrubbed and the carbon impregnated contact strips reconditioned and re-carbonized. Re-assembly of the strip is very difficult, but I've done this process with success now to five JX-8Ps.

The aftertouch is very cool and a must have feature for any JX-8P. By pressing down a little harder on keys you are already pressing, you can add brilliance, vibrato or volume swells. By changing your LFO settings, the "vibrato" added can actually do some really neat stuff beyond basic vibrato."

Roland SH-101 through a Boss CE-2B Bass Chorus Pedal (+TR-606, DM-2W) demo by Jordan Passmore

Published on Jun 20, 2016 Jordan Passmore

"In this demo I am running a sequenced SH-101 through the Boss Bass Chorus CE-2B pedal, followed by a Boss DM-2w Delay. The CE-2B is nice with synths because it actually has a dry/wet knob on it so a bunch of the original signal isn't lost, which is too frequently the issue with synthesizers used in tandem with guitar pedals.

The drums are the Roland TR-606 and the Boss PC-2 Percussion Synthesizer (the PC-2 is doing the mild synth snare sound)."

Boss PC-2 (+TR-606, SH-101) Demo by Jordan Passmore.

Published on Jun 20, 2016 Jordan Passmore

"This demo is focused on the Boss PC-2 Percussion Synthesizer. The PC-2 is triggered via the Roland TR-606. The 606 is also triggering a simple bassline sequence on the SH-101.

The PC-2 is great for many different percussive sounds, like frequency-modulated blips to simple tom(esqe) drums. The PC-2 is ran through the Boss DM-2w analog delay in this video."

Future Retro Officially Releases

We saw the videos, we now have the official release details.

via Future Retro:

"Today I am excited to announce the official release of our brand new 512 touch keyboard.

The 512 is much more than just a touch keyboard, and provides control over both MIDI and CV/Gate synthesizers simultaneously, with note on/off, pitch, velocity, aftertouch, mod wheel, pitch bend, and clocks. With many unique and very musical features such as user definable scales, different forms of scale mapping, defining scales from external MIDI notes, octave/linear/scalar note transposition methods, user definable chords with chord inversion, changing MIDI channels on the fly and much, much more. All of these features can be applied to any of the 512’s different modes of operation including: operating as a keyboard, arpeggiator, sequencer, MIDI to CV and MIDI to MIDI converter, or while using the Poly modes allowing you to play up to 16 monophonic synthesizers polyphonically.
The 512 also offers the ability to define user preferences including velocity and aftertouch curves and ranges, CV vs. MIDI octave offset, definable response times for pitch bend and mod wheels, as well as touch sensitivity control allowing each user to tailor their unit to the desired response.

The 512 MAP price is $800, and officially begins shipping today."

Streets of Rage - Intro Soundtrack (Live)

Published on Jun 20, 2016 Synt5

"This is our live synth performance of the iconic intro songs from Sega Genesis games Streets of Rage 1 and 2, originally composed by Yuzo Koshiro. Scroll down for more info.

Every melodic line has been transcribed note-by-note from the original arrangements and played live using hardware synthesizers, along with a sampler for drums. No computers were used.

From left to right, gear list and synth players were:

Korg M1 - França Guimaraes - M1 piano
Sequential Sixtrak - George Frederick - Synth solos #1
Korg Microkorg, Roland Sp404 - Guillermo Caceres - Bass, drum triggering
Yamaha An1x - João Marcos - Synth solos #2
Roland Jx-10 Super Jx - Raul Guimaraes - Pads

As you might have noticed, our arrangement combines both intros for Streets of Rage 1 and 2. The Streets of Rage 1 part goes up to 1:45 min, and then blends into Streets of Rage 2. In 4:19, just after SoR2 climax, we go back from SoR2 to SoR1 and finish as SoR1.

For the drums, we used the classic sample from Soul II Soul's Keep on Movin' , originally released in 1989. Recorded with a Tr-909, this drumloop would later become a staple for many electronic productions in the 90's, of which Enigma's Sadeness (1990) is usually the most remembered. It is extremely likely that Koshiro had this exact drum sample in mind when setting the mood for the SoR intro, so it made sense to use it in our version.

The piano sound in the Korg M1 is another interesting case. The M1 had already been available for 3 years in 1991, and was still extremely popular at the time. Its piano sounds found their way into all sorts of arrangements, especially in dance/house music trends, and became one of the most recurrent sounds throughout the 90s. If Koshiro had to choose a piano sound to record SoR, this would have to be the one.

The Sequential Sixtrak that plays the solo is quite convincing. The only problem is that it does not offer an option to quickly turn the portamento on/off. So, for some passages, you can see it being edited live.

Our barely functional 30 year old Roland Jx-10 provided us with some of the nicest pads available. The sound is a custom patch edited from a classic "Soundtrack" preset, and makes extensive use of its 12 voices and built-in Roland chorus unit. This would be our personal choice in a SoR recreation anyway, and the Jx was very happy to see some action again.

As usual, please forgive the grainy quality, the shaky cameras and the few misplaced notes, we were just having fun."

"I bought this synthesizer more than a year ago and normally it doesn't take this long to make an instrument playable again. But because I had to make an entire new circuit board after having been forced to give up on the old one it became a quite long process.

But now it is finished and therefore I have made a short demo where I play one of Ronald Erle Grainer's most well known melodies: The theme from Dr Who (in case anyone haven't heard it before). Everything is played on the SY-1 and only echo is added in the final mix."
