Ambient Synth and Guitar Meditation - Poly-61 and Artcore AG86

Published on Dec 24, 2016 Stephen Hummel

"Volume 4 of the 'Circuits and Strings' series from subtractiveLAD aka: Stephen Hummel.

A peaceful, deep ambient meditation based on a chord progression performed on my Korg Poly-61 and a loop pedal jam on my Ibanez Artcore AG86.

I made the patch on the Poly-61 and ran it through my Boss RE-20 Space Echo, with a little Line 6 Verbzilla.

The ambient guitar is the result of effects from my pedalboard, mixing bus and DAW.

New Hachi Step Sequencer for Novation Launchpad Pro + More

Hachi Step Sequencer Controlling a TT-303

Published on Dec 24, 2016 Mike Perkowitz

"Hachi runs on a Novation Launchpad Pro [+more, see below] and includes multiple sequencers. This video shows the step sequencer controlling a TT-303.

Each of the 8 columns is a step, and the note can be modified by octave (orange), velocity (green), slide (gray), tie (dark blue), repeat (pink), and so on.

For more info, see: https://github.com/perkowitz/issho"

"Hachi

A multi-function midi sequencer that runs on a Novation Launchpad Pro and a headless computer like a Raspberry Pi. Hachi is written in Java, and so can run on a Pi (tested), a Mac (tested), and many other platforms (untested), with or without keyboard and monitor.

Hachi (= 'eight' in Japanese) can run up to 8 'modules' at a time. Available modules include several midi sequencers, a paint/animation toy, and a sequencer-controller that lets you coordinate your sequencers. Hachi is a generalized version of this simpler sequencer that I wrote for the original Launchpad. That basic sequencer runs as one module in Hachi."

"Some excerpts of the last session in 3 parts, using mostly Pittsburgh Analog Replicator and Bugbrand DRM1 driven by Pittsburgh Timetable in the second part.

Until 0:17 = first part is how the patch started. how it surprisingly did sound after I powered on the systems.
0:18-0:54 = second part is a sweet spot I stumbled on while playing ans changing settings to find a sound I liked. I loop it here quickly to make it more noticeable.
From 0:55 on = last part. End of the session.

If you compare the beginning with the end of the session you’ll see how I got lost so to say :)
Did not really matter as it’s always fun, but the original idea was to develop the first part!"

"Vintage EDP wasp synthesizer. Fully functional with MIDI and power supply and original manual.

This synth was professionally restored by Dave Brown at Modular Synthesis and is featured on his website. Pictured of the inside are viewable there. Although the synth wasn't actually broken it exhibited odd behavior due to aging components. Dave solved all the issues and it now works very well and sounds fantastic. Dave also installed an Elby MIDI interface which has the latest firmware."

"Vintage Oberheim DS-2A Digital Sampler S/N 273

Fully tested using a Kenton Pro Solo MkII to provide Gate and CV while driving a Dotcom Modular Synthesizer. The following Gate types were verified:
• S-Trig No Pull-up
• V-Trig Low (+5V)
• V-Trig High (+15V)

All other sequencer functions were tested and proved to be working as designed. A photo copy of the DS-2 user manual will be included. There are some minor interfacing differences between the DS-2 and DS-2A. However, they are operationally identical and the DS-2 manual provides a good description of operation.

Please note that the sequencer provides a Trigger output and does not sustain the notes. The amount of sustain is controlled by the sequenced synthesizer's envelope generators using the decay and release controls. This sequencer records Keyboard CV voltages and the time between Triggers. During playback the sequence rate can be modified with the clock rate control and the pitch can be modified with three selectable transpose controls. This is a hands on type musical tool and is a lot of fun to use.

Cosmetic condition is excellent, almost mint. There is one cosmetic defects that should be noted. There is a slight indentation on the top left side. It is barely noticeable. All control pots, switches, push buttons, push button lights and indicator lights are working. The gas discharge display is working and in fantastic condition. Inside is clean with no sign of repair or modification of any kind..."

Exploring Black Holes 19122016 No.01 // Korg Monotribe & Zoom MS-70CDR

Published on Dec 24, 2016 Computing.Sound

🛰🕳🔊
Exploring the MS-70's SpaceHole algorithm.
The manual states that it's based on the Eventide SPACE BlackHole algorithm, which according to Eventide's website originated their 4000 series Ultra-Harmonizers rack-mount units.
There's also a plugin from Eventide called Blackhole.

But here I stick to the Zoom pedal. Although the plugin might also get me in the future...

Korg monotribe ➡ Zoom MS-70CDR [SpaceHole] ➡ audio interface

I love the combination of the two units.
Both small.
Both relatively affordable.

And as much the monotribe's (insert basic synthesizer or sound source of your choice) limitations can frustate for some uses, in this case they make it quite fantastic and a lot of fun, at least for me.
Particularly the 🎀 ribbon 🎀 controller.

Update: How it was made:

Sequencing modular synth with a computer: the envelope follower

Published on Dec 29, 2016

"In this video I'm explaining how the Christmas video was made.

I'm using an envelope follower, followed by a 10x voltage amplifier, bringing audio levels to CV levels.
Then I used Pure Data (https://puredata.info/) to create a sequencer that is actually sequencing the amplitude of a simple 10khz sinewave.
The envelope follower converts different audio volumes to different DC voltages, then they are amplified by a factor of 10 and can be fed to anything eurorack!

I'm then mangling with the matrix mixer, routing both audio and CV around the main oscillator, a Big Muff Pi overdrive and a Crybaby Wah.
Yes! My matrix mixers are ACTIVE and can seamlessly manage audio and CV, all without distortion.

I'd like to release an eurorack module with additional features, like max and min, a mic preamp, a gate out with threshold, and so on! If you would like to see a particular feature in an envelope follower, just ask!
