Microvolt 3900 Introduction Video & Official Press Release

Published on Feb 13, 2018 Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers

"A brief tour of the Microvolt 3900. A modern, semi-modular synthesizer inspired by the instruments designed by our heroes. The Pittsburgh Modular Microvolt 3900 takes a new approach to building a raw, analog monosynth with a host of unconventional and inspirational features. Patch cables optional."

Update: And the official press release:

"Pittsburgh pens love letter to the analogue monosynth with Microvolt 3900 desktop delight

PITTSBURGH, PA, USA: having turned heads and opened ears at The 2018 NAMM Show last month in Anaheim, CA, electronic instruments-maker Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers is proud to announce that it is taking preorders on its Microvolt 3900 — duly destined to delight desktop synthesizer supporters anywhere as a modern, semi-modular synthesizer inspired by the instruments designed by the company’s heroes, though taking a new approach to building a contemporary analogue monosynth with a host of innovative and unconventional features that makes it stand out from the sound of the crowd — as of February 14…

Thanks to Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers’ new temperature-stabilised, dual-VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) oscillator core, the analogue audio engine of the Microvolt 3900 feeds a set of timbral wave-shapers carefully crafted for deep harmonic shaping, allowing a layer of additive synthesis alongside the classic synthesis waveforms. Waveforms are fed into the binary filter, a custom state-variable filter architecture allowing for near-infinite resonance — with or without self- oscillation. Sonically speaking, this creates a juicy, fluid filter, adding depth and energy to the oscillator that can capably scream on demand!

Harmonized

Harmonized from Jochen Bohnes on Vimeo.

"Finally, I've reached the 70s (again!).

5 oscillators, 2 as an octave for "melody", in between 3 harmonic tones. I've written a 5 octave harmonization of 12 tones, every octave different - done with Max/MSP.

For a slight detune I used a wrong calibration curve with one of the two melody oscillators."

Korg MS20 | Science Fiction

Published on Feb 13, 2018 Alex Ball

You need to be careful triggering that secret patch setting at :22 in.

"I've been after a classic 70s synth for a while and kept returning to the sound of the Korg MS20. This synth has been through various versions and reissues, but this is the original from 1978 (with the type 35 filter for the nerds). I couldn't believe my luck when one came up for sale two miles away.

It's a completely different sound to my 80s synths (the reason I picked one up). You can overdrive the filters incredibly easily and it has a very fuzzy sound. It's probably most famous for the main riff in Daft Punks "Da Punk".

It's also semi-modular and there's loads and loads of patching possibilities. If that wasn't enough, you can also run instruments or vocals through it and process them, although I'll get into that in another video probably, once I've learned how to harness it!

For now, here's a spot of Tangerine Dream meets Rush meets Genesis using the raw sound of th MS20. This is the first thing that came out when I started jamming with it!

Synths:
Korg MS20 sequenced with SQ-1
Roland JX-3P (not seen in the video) doubling the sequence in stereo in the background.

Electric Guitars: Ibanez JEM 7DBK, Squier Jagmaster, Ibanez Tubescreamer, Boss CE-2 Chorus, Fender Blues Junior II, Mic'd with an SM57
Acoustic: Alvarez Baritone, mic'd with an AKG C414 (as seen)
Bass: (not seen in the video, but it's there) Fender Jazz Bass, Orange OB1-300, DXX 266Xl Compressor

VSTS:
GForce Software MTron Pro
Past to future drums (two kits, one take panned left, the other right - 70s style!)
Sound Dust Hammr Growler

Plug-ins: Goodhertz Vulf Compressor, various Waves and Izotope plugins, Past to future reverb impulses"

Serge Modular Synth Chaotic Ping Feedback #TTNM

Published on Feb 12, 2018 The Tuesday Night Machines

"This is a chaotic filter ping patch, based around the Infinite Melody module, which modulates everything and receives the whole system's audio output to create an unstable feedback loop. MORE INFO BELOW :)

---------

PixelNoises Synth T-Shirts by The Tuesday Night Machines:
https://shop.spreadshirt.com/pixelnoi...

---------

Audio gear used:
Best of CGS Serge BOG + MARSH
... and some Final Cut Pro X Reverb

Patch Notes:
Phew ... well ... okay, let's try to write that down. The DUSGs and one NCO ping the filter, one Utility LFO plays a constant drone through a modulated Wave Folder. Everything is mixed and sent to the VCF. The LPF output is recorded and the BPF output is acting as noise source for the Infinite Melody, which modulates pretty much everything, including the NCOs pitch. The NCOs act as Clock and Advance trigger sources for the IM. Because the Infinity Melody shit registers need to be constantly filled sequentially using the Advance triggers, weird rhythms can happen when you play with the Clock and Advance speeds (here my NCO square outputs). The Feedback from the BPF output into the Infinite Melody's Noise input then creates chaotic patterns that can be somewhat stable but then break out at the tiniest nudge of a knob."

Man Teaches His Grandma How To Play Synthesizer

Starting off tentatively, she becomes progressively more engaged with the device, switching between the different modulation effects to create a modern techno sound."

"FORMANTA EMS-01 is an electronical music instrument combining a polyphonic organ and a monophonic synthesizer. It was produced by Katchkanar radio equipment factory "Formanta", which is the manufacturer of such well-known makes of synthesizers as Polivoks, Formanta, Maestro etc. It bears the same logo on the package and retains some of its most impressive capabilities. It is designed to perform music of all genres and to create various sound effects while recording soundtracks for movies and plays, or studio recording. The organ has a 5-octave keyboard, 6 preset sound timbres, frequency vibrato with adjustable vibrato delay, decay adjustment and a stereophaser (both for organ and synthesizer). "If you are wanting an awesome synth that sounds warm, bassy, brassy, shrill, chilly, searing, cutting, rhythmic, atmospheric, or really anything. This baby can do it all. Its sounds super fat, but is super light so its perfect for gigging as well as a mainstay in your studio."

An interesting side note is that these came with the Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 presets as part of it's factory patch banks. It's not as organic or warm sounding, but then a Prophet-5 can't really cover everything a Nord Lead can. Both are great synths. The Nord Lead has a ton of character. I will never sell mine.

Byron The Aquarius shows how to get more funk out of your synth

Byron The Aquarius is a master of Roland’s classic Juno-106 synth, as he proved on his recent Against The Clock episode. After he finished the challenge, we asked him for his tips on using the instrument – specifically how he gets his keys sounding so funky.

The solution to getting Funkadelic-style sounds with any synth – not just the Juno-106 – as Byron explains, is a lot easier than you might think. See how he does it above and revisit his Against the Clock here."
