Novation Peak Wavetables

Published on May 7, 2018 Tim Shoebridge

"In this video I go through all the additional wave forms that are available for the Novation Peak polyphonic synthesizer in order to give you an idea of what they sound like and how you might use them. This has ended up being a very long video, over 55 minutes in total, but hopefully it might be useful to you if you are thinking of investing in a Peak or want to know its capabilities in comparison to other synths."

"This is a brilliant introduction to modular synthesis on abudget or a nice portable add-on to a small system. The new module prices are between 20 and 30 Euros, making it an affordable way to create analogue synth sounds, let alone a modular system that runs to thousands of pounds."

"These Yamaha CS series vintage synths are as analog and organic as they come and this specific model has been thoroughly tested including the oscillators (very important for the CS series synths). Every key, slider, button, and feature is working flawlessly.

For those not too familiar with the CS-15, it's the only model of the CS series that can produce two triangle waves, and these sound nice and colorful. Other synths, even many analog ones don't come anywhere near this one. This is mostly due to the unique discrete design which give all waves, including the triangle richer high end frequencies, so they really pop especially when using the filters. Also, combining a triangle wave with another square, pulse width, or sawtooth adds a smooth and thick texture to the sound due to the fact these are truly unique oscillators.

Yamaha also added a brilliance slider in front that affects both filters simultaneously and LED's for each of the ADSR envelopes. And these envelopes on the x5 setting can extend out about twice as long as the former CS synths. Yamaha also re-designed the layout to be more logical. Just looking at the flow of the entire panel is so much easier to follow and work with than previous CS synths. The CS-15 with it's two oscillators can produce everything from punchy bass to screaming leads with an organic quality and life."

LoopA - DIY MIDI Looper Introduction (MIDIbox platform)

Published on May 7, 2018 Hawkeye

"After about three years in the pipeline, we are proud to announce the LoopA v2 [you can find a post from 2015 here]. Thanks to Andy, there are now PCBs - and we have also finished a DIY acrylic case. Public availability (PCB and essential kit for hard-to-get parts) is expected somewhen in June/July, also John from Modularaddict.com did show interest and wants to resell those boards for the U.S. based folks!

The LoopA will definitely not be a beginner DIY project, as some SMD soldering and somewhat precise board interconnection work is needed, but a BOM and a full documentation about the build process will be released, so it should be doable :-). On the plus side you will receive a very compact unit (only 38mm height packing three stacked PCBs), a lot of MIDI interface functionality and a very responsive system that is designed to be "easy to use" and inspirational. Like not starting up your DAW and updating drivers but just sitting at your favourite synth and hacking in some lines! :)

Here are the main features:

* six polynote tracks linked to individual MIDI configurations
* six scenes, allowing for a total of 36 in-memory MIDI clips
* graphical note display on an OLED, that shows clip notes and also edit changes like transposition in realtime
* four MIDI OUT ports, two MIDI IN ports, one OUT port is configured as an optional BLM expansion port (later)
* non-step sequenced recording, clips can be dynamically requantized during live sessions
* note-editor for fixing recording errors
* transposition, scrolling and time-scaling of clips
* disk operations (full recall), storage to SD card
* BPM setting and MIDI sync from "upchain" devices like a master MBSEQ

Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet X at Superbooth 2018

Published on May 7, 2018 Synthtopia

"At Superbooth 2018, we talked with Gerry Bassermann about the new Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet X synthesizer.

The Sequential Prophet X is a bi-timbral, 8-voice-stereo (16-voice mono) synthesizer that combines samples and synthesis. At the heart of its sound is a newly developed engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through analog filters."

Perfect Circuit Systems: Glitch Series

Published on May 7, 2018 Perfect Circuit Audio

"In the 1980s, digital music technologies promised vast new sonic capabilities. So came the Yamaha DX-7’s digital FM, the Fairlight CMI’s sample-based workflow, the peculiar additive approach of the Technos Axcel, and the sequencing options afforded by computers and specialized hardware. A new world of sound was revealed, and many artists sought to find its boundaries: when they did, they found the inharmonic aliasing, abrasive sputters, grinding timbres, and mind-boggling rhythms that grew to define progressive digital music.

Perfect Circuit Audio’s Glitch Series is a family of Eurorack modular synthesizers for musicians who want to explore novel digital synthesis methods that revel in this aesthetic of malfunction. Featuring modules by Make Noise, Noise Engineering, The Harvestman/Industrial Music Electronics, and more, the Glitch Series places digital destruction under voltage control.

Strymon BigSky Eurorack Module Conversion by Million Machine March

via Million Machine March

"I was glad to see Strymon released their first eurorack module this year. Their Magneto module looks like a great entry and should fair well against others in that space. However after deeper analysis I find the module is lacking in a few areas. So, here I took their BigSky pedal and converted it over to a eurorack module. Having CV control over the parameters is a must and honestly, after using more CV, I could not go back to the original pedal again without them!"

Mister Rogers would be proud of this remix! - itijik Dollar Crate Sessions

Published on May 6, 2018 itijik

"Dollar Crate Sessions is about exploring the art of sampling using dollar records found at thrift shops. The abandoned vinyl that didn’t fit in their collection. The badass record that gets a scratch and is tossed in the garbage. One man's trash is another man's treasure!

For this session I had my Instagram followers pick out of three records, and they chose none other than Mister Rogers, 'A Place Of Our Own'! I recorded a lot of raw material by manipulating the turntable and the new Echo System by Empress Effects. I created a few sounds on the Elektron Digitakt, but the majority of the work was done in Ableton Live. This is a different approach for me, but I love how it worked out...even though it takes a little longer ;) There's a lot of good stuff I haven't included because it didn't fit the final beat I chose, but that just means more to play with later!

Thanks for watching my videos, I hope you enjoy! Leave a comment and tell me what you think.

"Hi Guys.

Today recorded the demo of Vertice Filterbank from Euterpe Synthesizer Laboratories because there are many questions as to how it sounds or works.

Samples come from Akai MPC 1000 each output separately to the filter input. The first filter on Drums, the second on Bass sound and last on Pads. three types filter LP, BP, HP in extreme saturation great overdrive.

the song is simple so I have not pressed the parties hard. wait for something stronger soon but I think that also shows Vertice in a good light.😁

For me awesome filterbank.

"At Superbooth 2018, Behringer was displaying a wide range of engineering prototypes of clones of classic electronic music gear.

We talked with Rob Belcham, Senior Principal Systems Engineer at Music Group, and got a quick overview of what Behringer had on display.

Many of the synths displayed are being developed by a team in China and are prototypes, so the UK-based engineers that we talked to were seeing them for the first time at Superbooth.

Belcham, however, is supervising the development of the RD-808, a clone of the classic Roland TR-808 drum machine, so he was able to give us a lot more insight into its design and development."
