Arturia MiniBrute 2 Overview by CatSynth TV

Published on May 17, 2018 CatSynth TV

http://www.catsynth.com

"First of three videos exploring the new MiniBrute 2 monophonic analog synthesizer from Arturia. In this first installment, we focus on the synthesizer voice features:

Oscillator 1 waveforms and modulation
Oscillator 2 as a bass or FM source
Filter modes
Filter modulation
Self-oscillation of the filter
The BRUTE Factor
Putting all together into a complex patch
Exploring a patch from the included Cookbook.

From Arturia's website (https://www.arturia.com/minibrute-2/o...
"From the earliest electronic instruments, synthesizers have expanded and enhanced the possibilities available to musicians. We decided not only to apply this mantra to the sound of our new instrument, but to synthesizer itself. MiniBrute 2 was born! A synthesizer that would sound huge and yet be compact, self-contained and versatile. An instrument that would be both comprehensive and evolving."

Part 2 of this series will look at the sequencer and arpeggiator functions, and Part 3 will explore using the MiniBrute 2 with external elements, including the RackBrute. Please subscribe to this channel to be notified the next installments are released."

"The Synthesizer works and sounds great. The condition is excellent for its age. Included are copies of the A & B sound libraries (50 disks with multiple sounds on each disc), boot disc and extra chips. See photos of the finish, but very nice natural/normal wear, no noticeable flaws to the finish, only one scratch I can find on the back."

Remember these? Alesis' first professional synth, a 76 key rompler from 1993.

via Wikipedia: "In the Quadrasynth's composite synthesis system, up to four "tones" are used to create a single "patch" or synthesizer sound. These individual "tones" are created by using 16-bit digital single-cycle waveforms or digital samples as oscillator sources, and are then processed via a digital non-resonant filter, various LFOs and envelope generators, and so on - in the usual manner. The Quadrasynth contained 16MB of ROM containing PCM-based waveforms and samples, with the option of expanding the sample base via PCMCIA expansion cards which plug into the back of the synthesizer.

Vector Synthesis with Pure Data and the Vectrex by macumbista

Vector Synthesis - Disembodied Hand from macumbista on Vimeo.

"This video employs my Vector Synthesis library for Pure Data to produce an animated vector image using audio signals, which is then displayed on an XY oscilloscope. Here, the shape being displayed is a 3D OBJ file, rendered as three audio signals -- one for each of the X, Y, and Z axes -- with rotations applied to all three dimensions. Display monitor is a 1950's tube oscilloscope which got hot enough to toast bread during the making of this video."

Beaver & Krause Grace Cathedral Performance (1971)

Published on May 17, 2018 Moog Music Inc

"As one half of the electronic duo Beaver & Krause, Bernie Krause performed with the newly invented Moog synthesizer on hundreds of popular recording sessions through the late 60s and early 70s -- contributing the electronic sounds of the future to albums from The Doors, The Monkees, the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young, and The Beach Boys.

Over two nights in in January of 1971, Bernie Krause recorded his Moog Synthesizer IIIp in Grace Cathedral -- with a reverberation time of 7 seconds -- for the Beaver & Krause album Gandharva.

This archive footage, unreleased for nearly 50 years, shows Bernie Krause and Paul Beaver in collaboration with the Gandharva ensemble during their live session in the Grace Cathedral. Krause set up mics throughout the entire church and asked the musicians to walk through the nave as they performed, emphasizing the illusion of space on the recording.

Bernie Krause is the recipient of the 2018 Moog Innovation Award -- presented at Moogfest 2018, the annual music, art and technology festival in Durham, North Carolina. This award recognizes over 50 years of visionary work that has redefined our understanding of creativity and deepened the possibilities that can be shared between human and machine.

The enduring magic of the Radiophonic Workshop | Resident Advisor

Published on May 17, 2018 Resident Advisor

"We look back on 60 years of the pioneering electronic music and sound effects workshop.

Visit the RA feature page: https://www.residentadvisor.net/featu...

'It was a place for experimentation,' says Roger Limb, who's been a member of the Radiophonic Workshop since 1972, "full of weird and wonderful sounds which people were not quite sure what to make of." It is easy to forget how mind-bending something like the Doctor Who theme would have sounded back in in the mid-'60s, at a time when almost all music was acoustically derived. Breakthroughs like this were made possible by the pioneering experimentation at the Workshop, which was set up at the BBC in 1958 to record sound effects for radio programming. Techniques were developed on-the-fly using tape manipulation, oscillators and early synthesisers, laying the groundwork for countless musical movements that would come afterwards. The Workshop closed in 1998, but some of its members have continued to channel its spirit into live performances and recorded music. We followed the group to a recent show at the Science Museum in London to hear about the Workshop's 60-year-long journey.

MFB Dominion 1 - Stoner Drone From Outer Space - While We Were Sleeping

"While We Were Sleeping - MFB Dominion 1 - Stoner Drone From Outer Space - While We Were Sleeping - recorded live

This tune has been steadily making its way through the intergalactic charts and has hit number one in the stoner drone chart on Mask-Bazoo.
Zoopa from the Supernova times has described it as "A catchy fun tune although a bit short, leaving a taste for more" but then he is known to play Grizmos's 20hr silence piece to kick off a party.
Anyways I have decided to share it with my fellow humans, so hope you enjoy it.
- or -
A live recording of a Drone using my lovely analog MFB Dominion 1 synth. The Drone gradually breaks up into pitched harmonics that are produced by a sample and hold LFO, feeding into the filter cutoff and finally, a delay to lift the drone into the stratosphere and beyond.
So relax, have something to get you into the correct state of mind (optional) and play through good speakers or headphones (a must).
Part of my serendipitous journey through the analog and digital domain.

UNO Synth Tutorials

Published on May 17, 2018 ikmultimedia

"UNO Synth is the ultimate portable, monophonic, true analog synthesizer and IK Multimedia’s entry in the hardware synthesizer world.

We combined our two decades of experience in software and hardware development with the expertise of Italian boutique synth-maker Soundmachines and IK’s synth guru, Erik Norlander (one of the brains behind acclaimed synths like the Alesis Andromeda). The result is a no-compromise instrument with massive analog sound that’s also easy to use with hands-on programmability and advanced features at an unbeatable price.

Seasoned synth professionals and beginners alike will love UNO Synth’s high-quality, pure analog audio path and its ultra-compact form factor. With both classic and modern synth sounds instantly at hand, UNO will put a smile on the face of synth fans of every musical genre. All this in a synth module that can be easily carried anywhere."

Playlist:

1. UNO Synth Tutorial 1: Getting Around the Synth
In this video, learn how to get around UNO Synth - IK's first analog synthesizer. UNO Synth is both powerful and easy to use. Not a synth guru? 2. UNO Synth Tutorial 2: The Sequencer
In this video, learn about UNO Synth's powerful and flexible on-board sequencer. Get creative with IK's first analog synthesizer!

The UNO Synth keyboard also doubles as a step-edit control for its built-in sequencer. Sequences can be programmed both in real-time or in steps and include up to 20 synth parameters for every step, making the UNO Synth sequencer among the most powerful in its class.
3. UNO Synth Tutorial 3: The Oscillator Section
In this video, learn all about the oscillator section of UNO Synth - IK's first analog synthesizer. UNO Synth's oscillators are the core of its true analog sound, allowing it to excel in producing the rich, warm, punchy, deep bass sounds that are the core of a high-quality monophonic synth, while also making UNO Synth perfectly designed to bring a wide sonic palette of leads, drones, arps, sequences, sweeps and effects.
4. UNO Synth Tutorial 4: The Filter Section
Learn about UNO Synth's analog filter section. The pure analog filter brings all the warmth, depth and fatness you’d expect from a real analog synth. The multimode resonant filter can be used for subtle tonal modification or screaming aggressive resonant sweeps. A custom-designed overdrive circuit lets you easily dial in modern saturated tones. And of course, you can modulate the filter with the filter envelope, LFO and performance buttons, as well as automate it in the sequencer and via external MIDI controllers.
5. UNO Synth Tutorial 5: The Arpeggiator
In this tutorial, learn about UNO Synth's powerful arpeggiator. The multimode built-in arpeggiator with 10 different arpeggio modes and a 4-octave range makes UNO Synth a joy to play for keyboardists and non-keyboardists alike.

If, of, by and for Itself // 0 Coast krell patch & Lyra-8

Published on May 17, 2018 theProxyServer

"Ok, so you probably can't dance to it...
The 0 Coast krell patch was illustrated on one of the Make Noise patch vids - and I've put it though some H9 shimmer 'verb.
The Lyra-8 kicks off in a fairly 'neutral' place... and then heads for a whiff of turmoil...
For me, the Lyra-8 is pretty much sonic wonderment - but then, I'm not much of a dancer."

Xaoc Zadar Prototype

Published on May 17, 2018 Xaoc Devices

1973 Quadruple Envelope Generator

· Four indepenent channels
· More than 200 unique shapes
· Cycle time range: 0,08ms to 20 sec.
· Shapes can be radically modified in two dimensions
· Complex envelope looping and chaining features
· Assignable CV inputs to cotrol almost every parameter
· Preset slots

Based on the general idea of synthesis by deformable vector shapes, Zadar allows you to choose from a wide variety of envelope functions, designed to suit pretty much any possible usage scenario. From basic and simple to complex transients, from looped modulation cycles to rhythmical patterns, from quasi-randoms to perfectly regular functions, natural envelopes extracted from various acoustic and electronic instruments, abstract fractals and physical models, etc. — they all work great as envelopes but also as stepped sequences, LFOs, resonator exciters and so on.

Starting with one of (literally) hundreds of shapes defined by freely scalable vectors of breakpoints stored in the memory, envelopes can be tweaked and adjusted to the heart’s content. Each shape consists of up to a thousand of segments, and it may be warped in time and amplitude, reversed, stretched from a fraction of milisecond to about 20 minutes, and of course attenuated. By manipulating these parameters you can easily obtain a plethora of new shapes, but it doesn’t end here.
Envelopes can be repeated, looped, chained and each channel sports a freely assignable CV input, allowing for most of the above mentioned transformations to be externally controlled as well.

Operating Zadar is quick and straightforward thanks to the set of four “endless” encoders. Menu diving has been reduced to minimum, and is actually only needed for the advanced settings. A crisp OLED screen provides the necessary visual feedback in real time. All the settings can be stored and organised in preset slots.

There are plans for even more functions to be added in later firmware revisions. Also, a small but very useful Nin expander module is planned, sporting yet another set of individual, assignable CV inputs and manual trigs for each channel for better tweaking comfort.
