Tokarev Protosynth V1LP + V2 + Microbrute + hardware MIDI player

Published on Nov 20, 2018 Konstantin T

"Making some music on the Protosynth V1LP with extended controls running in polyphonic mode, along with the first prototype of the Protosynth V2 (on top), and the Arturia Microbrute on the bass. The synths are receiving MIDI note data from a handbuilt MIDI hardware player which loads a multitrack MIDI file and outputs MIDI data on 4 MIDI ports. The audio output of the synth is input to the computer through a multichannel audio interface and some VST FX are added to the signal chain before recording the master mix."

Vinyl Debut by NYZ - SHFTR FRQ - Featuring Aphex Twin's Sequentix Cirklon & PreenFM2

"+ [Special note for track A9 - SHFTR_CA#BB1] => A huge shout of thanks to Richard D James for gifting me a Sequentix Cirklon sequencer and PreenFM2 synth during my Regional Arts Fellowship in 2017! This was the first track I made using this gear. You can also read up more about my open source Farey Sequence FM programming tool for the PreenFM here =>

NYZ of Noyzelab has a new release out on neon orange vinyl (limited to 300 copies) titled SHFTR FRQ which features PreenFM2 sequenced by the Sequentix Cirklon. You will find a track off the release above. Below you will find some exclusive pics sent my way from NYZ and info on the release from Forced Exposure where it is available in the US. The album is available in the UK from Boomkat here. Update: it's also available at Phonica Records, Norman Records, Juno Records, Redeye Records, and Bleep.

"The Death of Rave is honored to plate up the vinyl debut by NYZ; the cult, algorithmic/ generative music project of award-winning artist/scientist Dave Burraston (Bryen Telko, Noyzelab). The A-side revolves 14 succinct blatz, ranging from cranky percussive pieces to queered microtonal dissonance and SAW II-like atmospheres -- notably including one track made on a Sequentix Cirklon sequencer and PreenFM2 synth gifted him by Richard D. James. The B-side contains a steeply immersive spectral drone tract that (never) ends in a locked groove, especially cut at D&M, Berlin. The results are wholly unique and speak to the endless, playfully experimental variation of NYZ's art/research. They reveal visceral, alien microcosms of curdled microtonal tunings and proprioceptive chicanery bound to thrill and induce strange, new sensations in even the most hard-to-please fiend of electronic music. It's strongly recommended to followers of Russell Haswell's chaotic gnash, the mind-bending tunings of Aphex Twin, the visionary algorithmic scapes of Roland Kayn, and Eliane Radigue's microtonal meditations. In Dave's own words:

"SHFTR FRQ is a series of experimental studies into simple synth setups controlled by varying levels of generative complex systems [MANIAC cellular automata]. SHFTR FRQ was recorded over the last six years on an ever-changing hybrid of equipment encompassing the domains of modular and MIDI-based microtonal sound synthesis [analog and digital]. Setups were always ultra-minimalist, often with just the MANIAC cellular automata sequencer and one or two modules/synths to provide a consistent sensory focus. The studies range from ultra-short sequences, micro-ditties, investigatory motifs, to a full length high spectral drone meditation."

Burraston has previously collaborated with Alan Lamb on recordings of a mile-long telephone wire in the Australian outback, and more recently he issued nearly a dozen NYZ tapes and CDs with some of the most crucial modern music labels, as well as a number of releases under the Noyzelab and Bryen Telko aliases. In 2014, Dave self-published SYROBONKERS!, the most technical and in-depth interview ever given by Aphex Twin. Screen-printed jacket. RIYL: Russell Haswell, Aphex Twin, Eliane Radigue, EVOL/ALKU, Roland Kayn."

Critter & Guitari - Arp-II & Arp-III for Organelle

Published on Nov 20, 2018 Critter & Guitari

"Today we released two arpeggio patches that use probability to control whether or not an arpeggiated note plays.
Arp-II has two independent arpeggiators that feed notes into a multi-synth. Choose one of nine synth voices from the multi-synth and let the ocean of arpeggiated notes lap onto your beach and/or capsize your boat!
Arp-III has three independent arpeggiators that are fed into a subtractive synth. While not as 'synth-y' as Arp-II, the additional arpeggiator makes up the difference!

Both patches are Link enabled for tempo syncing with other devices on a shared wireless network. (WiFi adapter required; sold separately.)"

DIY "IKEA Hack" Plate Reverb. Sub $100.

Published on Nov 20, 2018 LeoMakes

Cool new DIY video from supporting MATRIXSYNTH member, LeoMakes. Update: part 2 added below.

"Watch Leo make a surprisingly good-sounding and "playable" plate reverb using an IKEA shelf and some basic electronics. It's a quick build that costs less than $100 in parts!

NOTE: This is a super-hacky prototype I made quickly as a proof-of-concept. It sounds nice, but there are several things that I will improve as time goes on, so keep an eye out for that (I'll post updates here).

Here are the parts I used. In case anyone is wondering, I am not endorsed or compensated by IKEA (or anyone else).

IKEA Bror Legs ($16):

IKEA Bror Shelves -- you need two of these ($17 x 2):

A transducer (there are many options; here is what I used):

Two piezo pickups (again, many options; here is what I used):

There is a lot more research I would like to do with the selection of transducer and pickups (and probably a lot of other things). If you build one of these or have made your own plate reverb in the past, please feel free to share your valuable wisdom in the comments!"

DIY "IKEA Hack" Plate Reverb Part 2 (Sounds amazing now!)

Published on Dec 11, 2018 LeoMakes

"Leo makes major improvements the (now famous) IKEA plate reverb in his last video! Total upgrade cost is about $40 and makes the reverb sound 100x better!

Audio Examples at 12:54

Here are the upgrade items and their approximate costs:
- Angle grinder (I rented it for $8/day)
- Cutting and sanding discs for angle grinder ($9)
- Box of springs ($8 and you only use a few of them)
- M4 screws, washersand wingnuts ($5)
- MDF board ($9)

I have made IR (impulse responses) of both the original and upgraded versions of the plate. I'll make a video about that soon and will be sharing the files for free. Please stay tuned for that.

If you build one of these or have made your own plate reverb in the past, please feel free to share your valuable wisdom in the comments!

The ASV - Complete Synthesiser Voice by Oakley

via Oakley Sound Systems

"The Oakley Analogue Synthesiser Voice, or ASV, is a complete analogue synthesiser in a 5U wide, or four MU width, module for the MOTM and MU formats. It consists of the traditional synthesiser architecture of two oscillators feeding a single filter, via a mixer, and then to an amplifier. Two identical four stage envelope generators (ENV1 & ENV2), and one sine wave low frequency oscillator (LFO) act as modulation sources to control the sound in a dynamically interesting way.

Each voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) is based around a classic sounding sawtooth core. VCO2's frequency can be hard synchronised to VCO1 by a front panel switch. Both sawtooth and variable width pulse waves are generated. These are both available from the socket field but only one from each VCO may be selected in the audio mixer that feeds the filter. An additional triangle wave from VCO1 can mixed with the audio signal from the filter prior to the final amplifier.

The AVS also has a sub-oscillator. This produces a triangle wave output that is half the frequency of VCO 1, that is, one octave below the pitch of VCO1. By default this is sent to the third level control on the mixer although this can be overridden by inserting a jack plug into the 'mixer in' socket. The sub-oscillator's output is also available on the socket field.

The pitch of both VCOs may be controlled by a master tune control on the front panel. Two octave switches independently control the base pitch of each of the VCOs. Each switch covers a range of three octaves. The pitch of VCO2 may also be offset from VCO 1 by the VCO 2 Tune control. The range of this control covers just over one octave from unison at the 9 o'clock position to an octave above at around 3 o'clock.
Pitch may also controlled by external control voltages (CVs) and internal sources such as the LFO and ENV1. Front panel pots control the depth of this modulation.

The pulse wave output from each VCO can be manually controlled by the pulse width controls. At their middle settings both pots will produce a 50% pulse wave, ie. a square wave. The pulse width of both VCOs can be dynamically altered with external CVs, or internal sources. Both VCOs use special circuitry to make the their average voltage output equal to zero. This reduces audible thumping when the pulse width is modulated quickly."

"Here we have a Moog Rogue in excellent condition. I'm selling it because my current gigs are demanding that I get something with presets, and I can't justify having more than one analog mono-synth at the moment.

The power supply is a replacement that I had to put together myself, due to how difficult it is to obtain a power supply of that wattage/connection size - It works absolutely perfectly, so don't be put off by the electrical tape.

I've included a video of me using it live, (skip to 9:26), and I'm happy to answer any questions."
