The workshop is at Thonk HQ in Brighton on Saturday June 22nd 2019, please arrive at 9.30am. Thonk is an inclusive and gender positive environment. The workspace is wheelchair accessible with accessible toilets. "Just for, as they say, '$hits and giggles' I decided if it were possible to do a proper rendition of my absolute favorite Genesis track, 'The Brazilian' using only one of my synths. As some of you know, I am blessed to own a few fantastic synths, but only one of them was able to satisfactorily pull this heavy percussive piece off - The Modal Electronics 002! kfhkh At first wasn't sure I would even be able to coax out enough satisfying sound from my 002 to cover this complex synth and percussion song, but with a little time and effort I'm very pleased with the end result. I only used reverb, delay, and EQ with the tracks I recorded to Cubase from the Modal 002. I hope you enjoy it as much as I had in recreating this brilliant Genesis treasure."

Prophet REV2 | In the Valley

"A demo that a number of people have been asking me to do for about six months, so I'm hoping it does the instrument justice.

The DSi Prophet REV2 (2017) is the successor to the Prophet 08 (2007) that was itself the comeback Prophet synth after Sequential had closed their doors thirty years prior.

Its heritage is legendary with the Prophet~5, Prophet~10, Prophet T8 and Prophet VS being a few of its relatives. It's also in good company with modern siblings such as the Prophet 12, Prophet~6 and Prophet X/XL.

Whilst it can do decent "classic" analogue sounds, retro patches would underplay all the modern things the REV2 can do. The 3 envelopes / 4 LFOs and comprehensive mod matrix combined with modern connectivity and synchronization make it a very convenient workhorse and I imagine players and engineers would have dreamed of functionality like it when the original Prophets were in their heyday.

You can stack patches, but the voice count halves when you do that. As mine is the 8-voice version that leaves me with 4-voices in that respect, but I worked around it. There's a kit to upgrade to 16-voice which is on my (long) list of things to do.

I used a combination of my own patches, some tweaked factory presets, some live playing, some midi and some tempo-synced grooves from the poly and gated sequencers. I used some onboard FX but also recorded some parts dry and added FX in my DAW.

"Synthesized celebrates the computer and synthesiser - and how the two technologies grew up together.

The two technologies have crossed paths many times since the CSIRAC mainframe played the 'Colonel Bogey March' in 1951. The mighty Fairlight CMI, the PPG and the humble Dragon 32 both share the same processor - as do the Moog Source, Prophet-5 and the ZX Spectrum.

By 1990, the Atari ST found its way into almost every recording studio. Technologies from the flagship Yamaha DX7 and Roland D-50 found their way into almost every PC sound card of the 1990s. Today, modern computers can emulate almost any classic synthesiser with near perfect accuracy.

Without computers we wouldn’t have FM, wavetable, additive and phase distortion synthesis - or even be able to save the sounds on our analog synthesiser.

Last year we were lucky enough to have a Fairlight CMI, a PPG Waveterm and a Greengate DS4 together in the same room. We even had Colin Holgate from Greengate and John Molloy from 80s band Mainframe to demonstrate it to us!

This year we hope the event will be even bigger, even better, even noisier and will have more wonderful synthesisers for everyone to see and use! To get you all in the mood, here's some pictures from last year's event."
