Buchla Cosmic Drone Sessions by The Galaxy Electric

Published on Nov 21, 2019 The Galaxy Electric

You might remember the first video previously posted here. The above is a playlist of all the videos in the series.

You cand find The Galaxy Electric at https://www.thegalaxyelectric.com.

"Relax and tune into our live weekly improvised Drone Sessions. This inaugural session involves a drone featuring four independent Buchla style square wave oscillators starting in tune a couple octaves apart. As the oscillator frequencies drift apart by way of manual control, beating ensues. Listening to droning oscillators can serve as an aid in a meditation practice as there is no sudden changes in sound. Just smooth drifts in pitch and the resulting beat frequencies. Drones can also serve as an ambient track to have on while doing tasks that require intense focus. The slow yet progressive nature of a drone performance can help one focus on tasks without distraction. The fact that we are manipulating these oscillators live and in collaboration helps the drone meander ever so smoothly in an evolving fashion as we are always reacting to one another's subtle movements. These movements are improvised so there is an unrehearsed and reactive ebb and flow to the tones generated.

The electronic music instruments used in this performance of modular drone music are the Buchla Music Easel, and a small system involving a Buchla clone model 259 Programmable Complex Waveform Generator, Buchla 292h Dual Lowpass Gate, and 281h Dual Function Generator in the Buchla LEM Powered 3 Boat.

Basslines & Pedal Tones, Punching Tripods & Big Stereo Mixes in 6HP // #JAMUARY2020 Day 5

Published on Jan 5, 2020 DivKidVideo

See the Synthuary label for more. Synthuary because these are the Jamuary synth videos. More below.

"Here's some Eurorack beats and bass that came from wanting to build up a big sounding stereo mix from a small Eurorack mixer, which was the ST. Mix by Befaco. The piece built around that but quickly went into working basslines with moving pitches against a static pedal tone that plays an octave higher. Hints of chord tones develop as the bass moves and the pedal tone stays static. The beats shift with random probability and I'm just playing around with this live.

Synth Stuff Ep. 64 - Roland GAIA SH-01

Published on Jan 5, 2020 tritonrecordings

"A friend let me borrow this virtual analog synth to film for Synth Stuff and it's a bit of a nostalgia trip because I used to have one years ago. In fact, the announcement of the Korg MS-20 Mini in 2013 is what made me sell it to get some funds together. I dig the look of it - sort of NASA-like. The sound? Well, it's not my favorite VA out there but if you get past the awful dance/EDM presets, there are great sounds to be had here. The "three layer" architecture is really cool too. My biggest gripe with it is that it's incredibly overpriced...even after being on the market for so long now."

"This Juno-60 is fantastic. Every slider is lubricated, all functions checked and working. DCB interface box is barely used and in mint condition with supple rubber on the cable. (I used the Juno-60 with the internal arpeggiator and external clock 99 percent of the time.)

It's been used on 10 years of recordings on my Bandcamp page if you want to check them out ... suitandtieguy dot bandcamp dot com. It breaks my heart to have to sell this but I have a very beat-up Juno-6 which Bela Fleck signed back for me back in the mid-90s that I'm going to rebuild and that is going to be the one for the long haul for me."

Album track improvisation/performance (Eurorack Analog Jamuary)

Published on Jan 5, 2020 DreamsOfWires

"Something I'm working in for the next 'tomorrow the cure' album, just a rough, improvised, preliminary version, so it may change a lot, but this is my work flow nowadays. The album will be all live/real-time recordings, just like the last one.

LIVE SHOWS: I'll be performing a short live set at this year's Superbooth 20 in Berlin, in case anyone was thinking of going. It's a very big event with lots of vendors and new gear to drool over.

PATCH BREAKDOWN: All synth sounds are from an AJH Synth Eurorack Modular system, which is used here as a 2-voice instrument.

The drone sound is one VCO passing through the Wave Swarm, then into the Ring SM's mixer, where 2 sub-octaves and an upper octave are added from the Ring SM itself, plus pink noise from the Glide + Noise module. The combined output is passed through the Sonic XV filter, where the wave-shaping functionality is used to alter the timbre of the sound significantly, and the cutoff frequency is adjusted manually throughout the recording. The amount of noise at the Ring SM is also reduced early on, then increased at the end.

The lead sound is 2 VCO's (square waves with PWM), the pitch of one is being shifted down 2 octaves or up 9 notes at various points in the recording by the Precision Voltages module, which provides convenient, instant selection of chosen note intervals. The sound is then filtered by the Ladder Filter, and is also used for the 'arp' sequence in the final part of the performance. Throughout the performance the envelope's modulation of the filter is being manually tweaked.

MY MUSIC: My existing analog synth albums can be found here: https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com
GEAR USED: Recorded on an iPad using AUM, Dubstation2 delay, and ShimmerFX reverb. Video assembled on an iPad, which isn't easy, and lacks storage space, hence no additional footage as was common in my earlier videos. If or when I can get my MacBook repaired I'll return to making videos more similar to those I've made in the past. Fortunately my camera still works :/

"I’ve upgraded the standard green-ish LCD display to a beautiful amber OLED display. It’s a pain to install & very expensive ($150+~ minus install if you can’t do it yourself). It looks *super* nice in the 1080. Matches the orange silk screening perfect. It’s also really easy to see! In addition I have the SFX + World cards installed. They add several hundred more waveforms that are really useful. If you produce Ambient, House, or Jungle you know the deal with the 1080. Lofi, bassy, and gritty (aliases when transposing)."

"One of the greatest features of this synthesizer is the 'feel' of the 61-keyboard itself. Indeed, the Virus KB would make a terrific keyboard controller. However, united with the Virus B synth engine, there really is no need for anything else to control!

This Virus KB works perfectly and sounds fantastic. Cosmetically, there are no large dents or scratches. There is light scratching in various places. The wooden side panels are whole, but have nicks and scratches. All the keys, knobs, LED's and the display work fine."

Behringer meets Bond // "Sneaky Acid Bond" with Behringer TD-3

Published on Jan 5, 2020 Acid Zoo

"This is a variation of the James Bond theme with the TD-3 as the only sound source (except the beats of course).

I overdubbed and layered it a couple of times to create the desired effect and added some drum programming. This track made me really wish i had more than just one TD-3 to use it polyphonic, but overdubbing it worked just fine... for the time being. ;)

Acid Zoo meets JB...

Enjoy!"

Frantic/pretty jam w/ Digitone, Volca Drum, Empress Multidrive, Lab, Ola, HX Stomp, Godin Stadium 59

Published on Jan 5, 2020 Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the possibilities of a new year. I picked up a Volca Drum over the holidays, and I'm astounded at how powerful it is for the price, from its independent sequencer lengths per track, accents, and "step jump" performance effect.

It's hard for me to start with drums, though, so I was stuck until a friend returned my Digitone, and then the song quickly came together. Kudos to Elektron for making multi-track gear that helps you construct songs quickly.

Kudos as well to the boutique pedal manufacturers out there. Strymon's Ola is beautiful, and my first choice whenever I need vibrato or chorus. Union Tube & Transistor is based out of my hometown, Vancouver, and their Lab compressor is gorgeous on drums (I only wish it were stereo, but maybe I just need to buy another).

And Steve from Empress was kind enough to send along my very first pieces of free gear (!). Here I put the Empress Multidrive to good use. I'm blown away by how the Multidrive can shape and mangle the drum sound but still maintain its clarity and bass.

Finally, I felt the song needed some guitar. The Godin Stadium '59 is the nicest guitar I have ever owned, from its sound to its feel. I can't recommend their guitars highly enough, if you play more than just synths.

Elektron Digitone — Four synth tracks (arp, melody, pad, bass)
Korg Volca Drum + Empress Multidrive + Union Tube & Transistor Lab + Strymon Ola — Drums
Godin Stadium '59 + Line 6 HX Stomp — Electric guitar

Written and performed within a 24-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

Published on Jan 4, 2020 Genshi Media Group

"::| TO HEAR THE FULL RANGE OF FREQUENCIES, A GOOD PAIR OF HEADPHONES ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED |::

First quick test of the Elektron Digitakt Drum Computer/Sampler using my own original samples which I sampled from a variety of sources (my Eurorack, objects from around the house, orchestral sound libraries, etc.) I forgot how completely unintuitive Elektron boxes are... after transferring my samples over from my computer, it took me almost an hour just to figure out how to edit and load the first sample into a track! Hopefully, I'll get much better and faster with this."

SDS Dual LFO Concept Module

Published on Jan 4, 2020 freshnelly

"This little 4HP puppy was made by me for me as part of my Skiff-Gift for Christmas! I decided to take some time off and make a portable rack for the long waits at the ferry terminals (going both ways) and the long ride across. This will keep me busy I'm sure!

The LFO is a dual variety and not super intuitive to start, but performs very well and remembers all of the settings (which is important right?)
I like the little thing!"
