Fatal Decision // Star Trek: The Next Generation (Auto-Destruct Synth Cover)

video upload by Amie Waters

"We've been slowly working our way through all of Star Trek, and the second time I heard this track, in the Episode "Booby Trap" I instantly knew I had to cover it, even if only 14 people recognize or care about it in the entire world. Give it a listen, its a complete trip of a track, playing with 13/8 like it's not a big deal.

This song was featured in a total of two episodes of The Next Generation and it slaps both times:
Season 2 Episode 2: Where Silence has Lease
Season 3 Episode 6: Booby Trap"

Roland Juno-6 (with Juno-66 Tubbutec mod) VCF audio rate modulation by Moog Matriarch

video upload by MIDERA

"My friends and I lamented the fact that my Juno-6 Juno-66 mod was not entirely completed, in that it does not have access to the LFO shape functions. One of my friends suggested sending the S/H OUT from the Matriarch into the VCF input in the Juno-6. So... I did, and then switched it to WAVE output and... well, this is the result of that.

The Matriarch LFO goes into audio rates and it brings the Juno-6 into new territory. Not only can I access S/H LFOs, but audio rate manipulation. I can also sync the LFO manipulation if I use the Arpeggio sync input in the back of the Juno.

At some points I do utilize the Tubbutec mod with its power arp (i.e., sequencer). Also, the voices are all slightly detuned. Enjoy the noodling.

0:00 Audio Rate modulation

"Both graphic and parametric eq are working great on all channels. The level control on channel 3 is intermittent and signal clips almost immediately but all other channels are working great. Rear-panel I/O are all working perfectly. All controls, indicator LEDs, and the VU meter are in perfect working order. Overall working condition is very good.

PHYSICAL CONDITION: Excellent - There are a few small nicks and dings mostly on the top panel, however, every knob and switch is intact and ready for action. In all, everything is solidly built and in excellent physical condition."

Roland JP8000 vs Promars sawtooth comparison

video upload by DX5

"(Tech video, not a cover). Just checking if a sawtooth waveform from the virtual analog JP8000 can sound like a real analog (Promars) accurately. And it does the job pretty well. Not the same, but nearly...

Settings:
Roland Promars: 2 Sawtooth waveforms (one per VCO, analog), slightly detuned and a bit filtered. Roland JP8000: 2 Sawtooth waveforms (Digital VA, one per 'Osc'), slightly detuned in the same amount and a bit filtered.

* I was not using the 'Super Saw' function, which allows the user to put seven detuned sawtooth waveforms stacked in Osc 1, widely known as being a trance signature resource.

Despite this synth can sound a bit harsh or synthetic sometimes (in a mean of "digital", specially on lower notes depending of filtering, etc), I found out it is capable of great analogue emulations, with the add of those dedicated faders and knobs for realtime control."

Sacha Ketterlin - live @SUPERBOOTH21

video upload by Superbooth Berlin

"With his energetic and emotional ambient set Sacha Ketterlin found the perfect sound to start the stage program for that day. Enjoy the recording of Sacha Ketterlins concert at SUPERBOOTH21.

Born in Switzerland and raised in France, he has been living in Berlin since 2008. Classically trained in piano, he is now known for his absorptive, richly textured electronic sounds created with modular synthesizers.

Strongly influenced by techno and Berlin rave culture, he went on to dive deeply in the electronic music scene, organizing techno parties and Ambisonic events with a focus on live performance. After spending more than ten years searching for emotionally poignant sounds with his modular synthesizer, he released his debut vinyl Ocean of Sound in 2019 on his own imprint Higher Resonance.

Chase Bliss Habit Overview and Demo with Eurorack and CV Expression

video upload by Patchwerks

"In this video Karl from Patchwerks gives an in-depth overview of the Chase Bliss Habit with help from Mutable Instruments Plaits and Mutable Instruments Stages. Demonstration includes examples of modulation via a modular synthesizer.

Habit is a delay with a memory. It lets you break away from the present moment and create echoes of the past instead. Or both at once. It does this by recording every sound that goes into the pedal, so you can revisit them later. You can collect sounds you made 2 minutes ago and turn them into loops, or harmonize along with old playing, or build impossible echo patterns.

It’s an effect that can become an instrument at any time, an evolving paint-splatter of everything you do. A musical sketchpad.

Or it could just be a fun delay:
-60 seconds of delay time
-Modifiers
-Multi-tap
-Looping

Record free-form songs right in the pedal, navigate through a whole performance with the turn of a knob, and yes, make echoes.

ARP 2600 Ring Modulator Demo

video upload by O.Z. Hall

"This demo just scratches the surface of what you can do with a "Ring Modulator" (aka Balanced Modulator, aka 4 Quadrant multiplier).

Here is some technical detail ...
The term quadrant used below refers to cartesian coordinates ( e.g. x/y graph with 4 quadrants ).

Regarding two quadrant multipliers (e.g. VCA) versus four quadrant multipliers (e.g. Ring Modulator).
Here's a short definition;
A two quadrant multiplier will multiply two signals together
one (bipolar) input (the carrier) (e.g. VCA signal input - audio or a DC voltage - e.g. +/-5v )
another (unipolar ) input (the modulator) (e.g. a level control input, e.g. an envelope 0-5v ) .
A 4 quadrant multiplier will multiply two signals, both of which are bipolar.

The both multipliers create "sidebands", whose frequencies are the sum and difference of the two inputs. E.G. 100 Hz (carrier) and 25 Hz (modulator). The sideband frequencies are the sum (100+25 = 125 Hz) and the difference (100 - 25 = 75 Hz) .

A 2 quadrant multiplier is an unbalanced modulator while 4 quadrant multiplier is "balanced". This means that.
The VCA (unbalanced) would output the carrier and the sideband frequencies (100 Hz, 125 Hz, 75 Hz).
A ring modulator (balanced) outputs only the sideband frequencies (the carrier is suppressed)."

"This MIDI Merger / Splitter is the special 2 input 5 output thru box which I designed from scratch while not being happy with other options.

It has two MIDI input ports which are merged together by a microcontroller and then split to five MIDI outputs. Programmed microcontroller is included with a PCB or Kit purchase.

It has optimized schematics for 5V and 3.3V MIDI sender devices, optimized circuitry for optocoupler to minimize false triggering and improve sensitivity. Finally it uses hex inverter with a Schmitt trigger for driving a stronger output signal. This makes it very reliable device. This is an active circuit, so it does require an external power. That’s the way it should be according to the MIDI specs.

There are two options for external power:

To be used with a standard wall adapter 6-12V and 5.5mm*2.1mm connector. In this case a Kit comes with corresponding socket and 7805 power regulator
To be powered from USB port. In this case a Kit includes USB->5.5mm*2.5mm cable, corresponding power socket (so you wont plug wall adapter) and doesn't include 7805. Instead of that you'll solder a jumper Pin 1 and Pin 3. Leave Pin 2 not connected. Please make sure, you use USB port or adapter with 5V output and verify it prior to connecting to the board. There are some QuickCharge USB chargers which can bump a voltage. Please, avoid using them.

Board size and an enclosure choice: Size: 5x17cm"

Behringer Considers ARP Avatar w/ Vocal Tracking for $499

Another from Behringer.

"We recently asked you, if you’re interested in a revival of the lovely ARP Avatar, which was designed as a guitar synthesizer.

We have since created a draft that replaces the hex guitar input with a high-speed and super accurate audio to CV converter, which not only allows you to perfectly track your guitar signal, but also any other instrument. We also included a mic input for great vocal tracking.

What would be your level of interest for such a synth? What other changes would you like to see?

We believe we could achieve a price of US$ 499 retail.

Please remember that this is only a proposal for now and we have not decided to pursue this project."

"Originally bought new in a musical instrument shop in Turin in 1981 (one of the few authorised ARP dealer at that time...) and barely used in my smoking-free studio then put away in his flight case for a very long time, now I would like to find a new owner / collector who will be able to give it the right value and care he deserves.

The keyboard is 100% original except for very few replaced components described below. Really outstanding for a Quadra! It will not be easy to find one in such original state as they are very delicate and it is easy to find yourself in a dead end when you repair one...

Demo in the video previously posted here.

Roland SYSTEM-700 in excellent shape. The system comes with 1 Main Cabinet (complete with tolex and front lid) and 2 smaller cabinet frames (without tolex). All modules work as expected and the sound is pure analog heaven. Very nice set of modules including 3 filters (!) and 4 oscillators, Dual ADSR, VCA, S&H, Mixer, GateDelay, Multiple, and stereo Chorus. Se below for full list. All oscillators calibrated and track perfectly over 5 octaves (and more) with 1V/octave. (Octave range switches are not currently calibrated for perfect octave jumps). Pre-wired Internal routings: Key CV to all 4 oscillators Key CV to the 2 filters in the main cabinet ADSR 1 and ADSR 2 to Left filter in main cabinet. You connect your external CV and Gate to the external PSU-unit. The PSU unit use the special original connector for main cabinet and a more modern DIN- connector for the extra cabinets. Additional empty Cabinet frame including power is included. Just add it to the other Cabinet frame with the included cable. Use for additional modules but also great for test and calibrating matters. Note, this is not the simplified Lab-system but the full blown 700 modules with lots of more external inputs on each module.

Radical Frequencies Dpvco waveforms into Audio & CV Mixer with oscilloscope

video upload by Radical Frequencies Modular

"Here i use an oscilloscope to show you the new RF Audio & CV Mixer module by passing through waveforms from Dual Precision Vco .
You can see and listen the difference between the opamp outputs and the transistor outputs !
The discrete transistor circuit can warm and gradually saturate the sound , and in addition positive saturation it’s different sounding than negative saturation, giving the possibility of choice what sound you prefer!
After mixing single waveforms through the mixer at the end of the clip I mix 3 separate saw waves from different dpvco oscillators for this fat analog sound 🙂 The audio is recorded directly from the mixer into the sound card."

AI022 Eurorack Harmonic Mixer First Look

video upload by AI Synthesis

"A demo video for the AI Synthesis AI022 Eurorack Harmonic Mixer.

The AI022 Harmonic Mixer Eurorack Module is a discreet mixer, using no Integrated circuit chips, and increasing gain will add harmonics to incoming audio.

It can be purchased as a module, or DIY Kit and PCB/Panel Set.

The Bias knob adjusts voltage of the circuit, and adjusts how well or poorly the transistors replicate incoming audio. Adjusting the bias will add or decrease harmonic distortion."

Update:

AI022 DIY Harmonic Mixer Eurorack Module Build Guide Video

video upload by AI Synthesis

Update: pics and press release:

Portland, OR, USA 4/12/2022 – AI Synthesis has released the AI022 Harmonic Mixer in both a built and guaranteed version, as well as in kit and PCB/Panel format.

The AI022 Harmonic CP3 Style Mixer is a discreet mixer using no ICs. As gain increases harmonics and analog warmth are added. As gain increases more, distortion and phasing is added, creating new waveforms from old ones.

The AI022 takes inspiration from the legendary Moog Modular CP3 style mixer, but updates it for eurorack and allows for user customization of the circuit. Many Moog Modular users attribute the CP3 mixer module to providing much of the warmth of the Moog Modular sound.

An exposed Bias knob allows abuse of the circuit, and allows for faithful replication of incoming audio, or radical analog wave shaping and distortion. It is also possible to use the Bias knob to adjust a +/- 5V signal into a 0/+ or 0/- signal.

It comes in both Silver Aluminum versions and Black PCB FR4 versions.

“In the year 2000, I was in college and obsessed with modular synths, but could barely afford to eat. I knew it was possible to build your own synth, but there wasn’t anyone, or anywhere to turn to for advice. In the past decade, much more information has been published online, and in 2013 I started down my path to DIY modular. Even with all of the information online, there still lacked a single, simple, comprehensive guide for those looking to build their own synthesizer. I want AI Synthesis to be that guide. Prior to building my own synth, I was a dreamer, after building my modular, I felt I had awoken. I want to help others do the same.”
-Abraham Ingle
Founder, AI Synthesis In addition to providing step by step build instructions, schematics, and circuit explanations, the site also includes a guide for getting started in modular synthesis, and a series of DIY Guides, with information regarding how Resistors actually work, and how to integrate a $26 scope into your Eurorack system.
