Chompi sampler - first play w/ Prismatic Spray

video upload by Arman Bohn

"I backed the Chompi and received mine few weeks ago. I haven’t had a chance to test it out until now.

A quick perusal of the manual, online and off I go!

I’m using the Phantasmal Force to trigger that initial note.

The prismatic spray feeds some sound into the Chompi and then I start turning some knobs.

I have no idea what I’m doing.

Exploring clocks, loops and chaos with Rung Divisions from Fancyyyyy Synthesis

video upload by Tom Churchill

"This video is about Rung Divisions, by Fancyyyyy Synthesis. It’s one of the most inspiring modules I’ve used recently, but it’s also quite a hard one to sum up in one sentence.

It has two main components. The first is a clock divider which outputs pulses that you can combine in two buses to create polyrhythmic patterns. That drives a universal shift register which outputs pseudo-random, chaotic or looping stepped voltage patterns. It’s an evolution of Rob Hordijk’s Rungler circuit, which is at the heart of the Benjolin synth. And there are dozens of interesting musical applications for it - a few of which I explore here.

Find out more at https://www.fancysynthesis.net/

NB: Fancyyyyy Synthesis sent me this unit to check out, but I don’t get any other sort of payment. This is a demo, not a review, and this channel is a hobby, not a job, so I only showcase things that I’m genuinely enthused about.

27:42 Shift register as a VCO
30:22 Rungling for chaotic sequencing"

Rung Divisions combines a universal shift register, a “divide by n” pulse divider, analogue noise, and several logic and binary operations. These functions synthesise an array of predictable and unpredictable digital signals at arbitrary time scale.

Rung Divisions’ primary use is as a complex polyrhythmic gate generator that drives a chaotic / pseudo random / looping stepped cv pattern generator, with voltage control over the pattern “direction”, length, and chance of the pattern looping. The combination of these features can be used to generate auditory illusions similar to a stroboscopic effect – like the visual aliasing of a wheel that appears to stand still and reverse direction at speed. Rung Divisions is built with solid state & discrete logic blocks to work at frequencies between 0–40kHz. The module is designed to drive multiple voices with gate patterns and CV, or to generate audio rate mayhem - these functions can be combined through patching with other modules that can take input signals over a wide frequency range.

Rung Divisions behaves in many surprising ways with feedback and self patching - the module has propagation delay compensation to allow for all outputs to be used in feedback loops.

Complete redesign of the 2018 module, building on the original features in multiple ways:
Universal shift register - can shift data in two directions
Dual gate bus with three position switches
CV over pattern length, shift direction and chance of loop
Analogue noise output
Clock pulse width affects all outputs
1-bit, 3-bit and 8-bit data encodings
All solid state and discrete logic, runs at wide bandwidth
Expander ports for upcoming dual oscillator, cv addressable clock divider, bit sieve and random voltage sources

Abstrakt Avalon MOD ENV sidechain tips and tricks

video upload by manmade madman

"The MOD ENV on the Avalon can be super useful as a sidechain for 4 on the floor music. In this use, it will duck the audio on the steps that its triggers.
The MOD ENV is a simple Attack/Decay envelope which you can use on the filter or VCA. You need to adjust the Attack/Decay according to the tempo, and you can get syncopated things going on which aren't possible on a standard Roland TB-303.
Near the end of the video, it can also become a "reverse" sound as it sweeps in slower than the normal attack."

240107 - Jamuary2024 - Liven MEGA Synthesis Jam

video upload by ChrisLody

"Full Disclosure: I occasionally take on freelance work at Sonicware on an hourly rate producing synth & sample sound design, beta testing, checking English text, video manuals etc. This video wasn't paid for directly but as a result of my work with Sonicware it is marked as Paid Promotion

7 days into Jamuary 2024 and I've only managed 2, not really what I'd planned! But at least now the reveal of the Liven MEGA Synthesis is out of the way I can upload some jams using it. Plus this isn't an official Sonicware video, so I can mention the fact that it's designed to emulate the experience of making music on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis hardware unlike in my last video, hopefully to the surprise of almost nobody 😄

I didn't create any fresh patches for this jam, it's all just presets and there's plenty to choose from (including my work of course).

From this video you should be able to hear that the general lo-fi vibe of the YM2612 has been replicated nicely. Part of that is due to a design flaw in it's 9 bit DAC which distorted the sound at quite volumes, often called the Ladder Effect. You can turn that on and off per track on the MEGA.

Apart from the delay on the lead sound I'm not using any effects here, the distorted guitar lead sound is created using just FM synthesis. On the original Mega Drive/Genesis adding delay would have had to be done by duplicating notes onto another channel of the chip using up polyphony, but the MEGA has an effects section so this is a regular guitar pedal like delay effect."

2024, The First Ambient Performance: Life like a "Reverse Journey"

video upload by Meng Qi

"The previous year-end performance was recorded, and this time, the performance was particularly enjoyable. When I listened to the music again, it reminded me of the name 'Reverse Journey.' It originally referred to inns and hotels. 'Heaven and earth are the temporary lodgings of all things, and time is the passing guest of a hundred generations." It means that heaven and earth are the temporary lodgings of all things, and time is the passing guest of a hundred generations.

The synthesizer's arpeggio sets the background, like a young boy setting off on a journey of learning. The melodious Kalimba melody represents the consistent and brief joy in the early part of the story.

However, my friends, we are all familiar with the story of the "hero's journey,' aren't we? It's about the call, the test, friends, enemies, caves, hardships, the return, and resurrection. This is the story told in the later part of the music."

"A rare opportunity to own a Rhodes Chroma + Enabler!!!

All voice cards recapped, new PSU, CC+, Original re-foamed road case for the Chroma and a Brand new Orange Calzone for the Enabler (will add photos of cases soon just need to pull them out) Programming manual, Performance manual, Interface Manual, Dual Foot switch, Volume Pedal, sequence Pedal, CC+ Midi break out box, Behringer BCR2000 with the special Chroma overlay plus other misc collectable stuff like the OG brochure, parameter chart and print ads as pictured.

Chroma is perfect working order, i spent a fortune having it refurbished, all voices pass tune on start up no issues sounds amazing not to mention the Enabler which is brand new, I waited for 5 years for my number to come up but selling a couple of big items to make my escape into the wilderness as easy as possible, things change. Physically it's in great shape for it's age not perfect but still lovely.

Pick up from LA is much preferred but can ship as they come in cases just wont be cheap, if you're serious it's an option we can discuss no problem."

"Everything has been looked over on this synth and there are no issues with it at all. The ribbon cable connecting the voice boards to the motherboard has been replaced. The potentiometers have been lubricated, a substantial amount of ICs have been replaced to prevent failures in the future, the power supply has been upgraded, and a few CEM ICs have been replaced that were somewhat problematic. The synth passes auto tune and has been fully calibrated. All features are demonstrated in the video I uploaded to YouTube."

Mellow Sunday | Mellotron Micro + Soma Cosmos

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I recorded four jams today. Four. This one was the best, so I'll post this one. So now I have a few 'backups' which makes it easier to relax when there's a 'writers block' day. #jamuary2024 is not limited to modulars so today I decided to use one of my favorite creative combo's, the vintage Mellotron and the 21st century Soma Cosmos. I am using the R1.5 'rhythmic firmware' which is basically a looper. It has 7 modes with different timings and pitch shifts. There are three additional modes with delay, verb and grains from the original firmware. There are two versions, one with drive, and one with drive remapped to pitch shift. I always want to bring an orchestra to a gig, but leave the VST laptop at home. Mellotron is a perfect machine to add polyphonic samples while keeping the 1960's vibe and it's great to process with a modular synth. Happy Sunday!"
