"The legendary Roland TR80*8 up against the *Roland TR-8S and the Behringer RD-8 Looking only at the sounds - or listening to them! - do they come anywhere close?

The TR-8S uses Roland's ACB technology, which is the same as the TR-8, Roland Cloud plugins and the Boutique TR-08 - so this has you covered for all of those. I'm using the RD-8 Mk2 - you cna tell because its got the black buttons, Mk1 had white.

I've gone through all the sounds (forgot the maracas in the demo bit) and showed how they differ. Taking into consideration no 2 808s will be identical I think they both stand up very well to the orginal TR808.

Strange Module Interactions

This one reminded me of the sequence ratchet/rachetting effect in the recent Franke and Ruby and “Liar, Liar, 960 Denier!” 😅 videos, albeit a diffent approach.

Reddit user n_nou offered this explanation.

'Ext Adv expects bipolar clock to cycle properly. Any polarity dip will do, even slightly below zero at minimum. EOC on Abacus is (mostly) unipolar. Mostly, because the exact 0 point varies depending on the function shape, so some shapes and frequencies run 1050 through only odd and some through all steps. Simple offset will correct/result in this behaviour and you can use any LFO for this, this is not specific to Abacus. Moreover, Ext Adv is not properly buffered, you can literally use it as a half wave rectifier. Just mult the signal to the Ext Adv and your destination, 1050 will sink the negative part of the wave and will mess up with unipolar outputs. Check unity output from Abacus, it flattens at maximum.

As to PP1, at high gain it will amplify even miniscule fluctuations in power supply, and since PP1 itself is very sensitive, it will result in pitch shifts.'

Not sure if this is telling the whole story or not but it's all I have to go off of at the moment."

"Large format 5U modular synthesizer with the Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave.
Two passes. The first was the modular synth, and the second was the played lines on the keyboard. All sounds except the melodic part was recorded in real time from the modular.
Two Matrix Algorithmic Composer modules from Synthetic Sound Labs were used for the moving lines throughout. These were fed to a pair of SSL/Ian Fritz Thru-Zero oscillators. The outputs were mixed straight and also split to an Encore Electronics Frequency Shifter, MOTM 440 Filter and heavily modulated 73B Modcan Dual Delay. Further processing with the Empress reverb and the Dove Audio D501 filter.
The bass notes were generated by the STG Soundlabs Voltage Mini Store to a pair of STG Oscillators and a Dove Audio WF. The filters included the MegaOhmAudio MA20 and the Frequency Central System X LPF.
A Q960 sent the arpeggio sweep voltage to an SSL VCO through a Behringer DD400 digital delay.
A Ring Modulator patch on the Q169 Qxcillator ++ from Synthesizers.com was directed through an Oakley Sound Diode Super Ladder filter then through an SSL Digital Delay.
The S&H sounding patch was not a sample & hold at all. It was a combination of a Q960, West Coast Random Source, MosLab 901/904A and a MegaOhmAudio CdS through an Oakley VC State Variable Filter."

Today I am exploring various synth and percussion elements through the JHS Colour Box v2 for that lovely vintage console saturation. Or downright savage noise when pushed harder, if that's your bag. A/B comparison effect on/bypass except the last section, got lost in the moment on that one. Tried my best to mind the levels, but now and then the volume is a bit inconsistent. Some normalization applied to remedy some of that, you understand. The EQ applied some nice touches, really helps pick out some sweet spots here and there. Recorded direct on iPhone via EPM6 mixer via Go:Mixer:Pro-X.
