Weston Precision Audio - Pro2021 & Fractal Audio VP4

video uploads by Tumeni Knobs

"I recently finished building the Weston Precision Audio Pro2021 from the Synthcube.com kit. It was an amazing experience to build an entire synth from a giant box of parts, and I had a ton of fun. This synth is a clone of the venerable Sequential Pro One from the early 80s and it sounds incredible. It may seem limited but it offers tons of sound design capabilities, and it's certainly a lot of fun to play. Like with most synths, once you add reverb and delay you can't really go wrong.

This is just an informal, not very well prepared noodle on it. The Pro2021 has midi and CV control options on the back panel, and here I'm using my modular rack to drive the clock which drives the arpeggiator rate. The audio outs are going into the modular's mixer, and effects are from the Strymon Starlab and Veno-Echo. This particular patch is highlighting the oscillator sync feature, which I love the sound of. The internal LFO is modulating the pitch of Osc 1 and Osc 2 is set to triangle wave. Sounds big and fat and crisp and clean all at the same time. Cheers!"

Fractal Audio VP4... with a Synthesizer. Is it any good?

video upload by Tumeni Knobs

"Oddly, when researching the VP4, I couldn't find any demos of it being used with a synth, so I bought it anyway to see if it would be a good match. And yes, most emphatically yes, it is! It was immediately apparent they would go well together - and having only played around with the VP4 for a couple of hours, I thought this video might help others decide if it could work for them.

Obviously, the VP4 does so much more than Drive, Chorus, Delay and Reverb, but those are bread-n-butter effects, so I stuck with those for this quick sound demo. I've since messed around with other effects in the VP4, and found all kinds of great sounds.

The synth is a Weston Precision Audio Pro2021 - a clone of the legendary Sequential Pro One. I built this from a DIY kit I bought from SynthCube.com. It's a simple mono-synth, with no built in effects, and it really does sound excellent - and even more so with a little effects (or a lot of effects). It's filter is super resonant and easily gets squelchy, but that enables some of the greatest sounds when you play with the cutoff knob. ;-)

The recording is direct mono out from the synth into the VP4, stereo out from the VP4 to the iRig Pro Duo that's connected to my old iPhone 12. I opened the audio file in Presonus StudioOne to see if it needed some EQ or compression or normalizing, but I decided to leave it completely raw. I made no changes to the audio whatsoever.

So, I am completely sold on the VP4. I have a load of other effects pedals, including the Eventide H90, and this thing is amazing. The quality of the effects and the build are absolutely top notch, and the user interface is so easy to use right out of the box. It's way way way easier to mess with than the H90...

Cheers!"

Arpeggio with the Portabella MK IIIe & Meraki delay pedal

video upload by Erik Lucas F.

"This is a video demonstrating PIN Eletronic's Portabella MK IIIe. A pre-written MIDI sequence was sent from my DAW to the Portabella; the audio from the portabella goes through a true-stereo analog delay pedal called Meraki from Walrus Audio and then into my DAW. No processing was applied except a slight percentage of reverb from Fabfilter Pro R2 which is controlled from 0% to 15% using the MIDI Fighter Twister shown in the video. A bass line was also used in this piece, whose low-pass cutoff position is also controlled with the MIDI Fighter Twister."

Worng Electronics - Parallax! Eurorack Stereo FIlter.

video upload by Signal Sounds

"Parallax is a stereo filter designed with a classic sound, a simple friendly interface, lots of modulation options and two flavours of output. Designed to bring your modular system into a stereo world, Parallax is a pair of filters for your left and right signals which are controlled with common stereo controls, as well as controls to skew the cutoff and resonance in the stereo field. Parallax is perfect for making synth patches from stereo sources, or for taking a mono signal and making it stereo.

A stereo signal (or mono to the left input) passes through filters based on the design of the classic Pro-One but with a number of tweaks to update the filter for modern use. in addition to the -24dB/oct outputs there are -12db/oct outputs added for a brighter, smoother sound in addition to the powerful sound four-pole sound you would expect. All outputs are available simultaneously, giving you more patching options.

Ik Multimedia: Uno Synth Pro X - Unboxing e audio demo!

video upload by Synth Cafè

Google translated:

"IK MULTIMEDIA Italia has decided to entrust me with the first unboxing in Italy of the new Uno Synth Pro X. What an honour! Obviously, I did things a bit my way and forgive me if you find some mistakes in the shots and in some sounds but I had very few days to prepare this video. In the end I enjoyed it so much that in addition to the unboxing you will also see him play.

A Synth Pro X is a 3-oscillator monophonic/paraphonic analog synthesizer (thus with 3-voice paraphony) with a versatile design and a wide range of functions.
It features two state-variable filters, 10-mode arpeggiator, a 64-step sequencer, 12 studio-grade effects, and much (much) more.
Here are some of the main features of the Uno Synth Pro X:
3 analog oscillators
2 state variable filters in series or parallel (OTA LP/HP multimode and LP 12/24 db/oct auto) 10-mode arpeggiator
Elektron-style 64-step sequencer with random mode
12 studio effects (modulations/delays/various reverbs)
Stereo sound output
Mono audio input
2 programmable and automatable CV GATE inputs
MIDI port
USB port
256 presets
Power supply via USB or power adapter
Editors!
The sound is undoubtedly modern, in my opinion in step with most of today's sonorities. Sometimes it's hard to even keep it at bay especially when using the drive.
The effects are really beautiful and are probably the non plus ultra of the machine, in particular the reverbs, which I liked a lot. The "Bassline" key is brilliant, which literally modifies some parameters of the synthesizer giving some "limitations" that go a bit to remember the characteristics of the 303, such as the cutoff which will be limited up to 5K hertz!"

Spectral Audio ProTone SN 960204

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The ProTone is a true analog synth from the mid-nineties for the modern MIDI studio. It is monophonic and features two analog oscillators, a beefy resonant filter, flexible LFO, MIDI and CV/Gate control, and a simple intuitive hands-on layout with every control parameter accessible from the front panel knobs and switches.

Each oscillator features saw and pulse waveforms with independent waveform selection, tuning and level. White Noise is also available from VCO1. The oscillators can be sync'd and Ring Modulation can also be dialed in. The filter section allows for either high or low pass filtering and 12 or 24 dB/oct slopes with the usual cutoff and resonance knobs. A fairly standard ADSR envelope can be applied to the voltage-controlled amp, but there's only a decay envelope (Accent) for the filter. The LFO is quite flexible, with six wave shapes plus random, noise or external input. The LFO can be set to modulate VCO1, VCO2, Pulse-Width on VCO1, filter cutoff and panning. A few remaining controls include a Panner, and Slide (portamento) effect.

The ProTone features MIDI I/O and traditional CV/Gate I/O for use with vintage gear. A little too much like vintage gear, however, the Pro Tone does not have on-board program memory. But with such a basic synth architecture and no hidden menus or parameters, the ProTone is a hands-on tweaker's synth - full of fat analog bass and synth sounds with a squelchy filter and competent LFO. Additional features include external VCO and LFO inputs, MIDI controlled volume and frequency cutoff, velocity sensitivity, and stereo outputs. The ProTone makes a cost effective, reliable and unique alternative to many other older vintage dual-VCO analog mono-synths."

"Time to get a little more serious.

SH5-VCF is an all analog Eurorack adaptation of the Roland SH-5 mixer and Dual Filter. There are no filters-on-a-chip here. The SH5-VCF uses all discrete components and quality op-amps to work its special mojo. Like on the original, the Low Pass circuit is comprised of open-collector matched transistor pairs arranged in a diode ladder configuration. The lack of temperature compensation was also respected, so while the resonance can self-oscillate the v/oct keyboard tracking is about 3 octaves at best. This same configuration used in the Roland SH-1000 and the earlier System 100 (not 100m).

The Dual Filters: VCF + BPF
| VCF | The VCF (Voltage Controlled Filter) comprises one HP (High Pass) and one LP (Low Pass) circuit in series. VCF Select switch can choose 1) HP, 2) LP, or 3) BP (Band-Pass) configuration. Due to the unique design, the HP resonance is actually derived by overdriving the LP circuit.
| BPF | The dedicated BPF (Band Pass Filter) has its own discrete circuit distinct and apart from the VCF. The original BPF circuit has been respected, but greatly expanded upon using a proprietary voltage controlled feedback path to enable frequency control via external signals. This feature wasn’t available on the original design. The original did not have a buffered output jack for the BPF neither, as the SH5-VCF does. The BPF Level attenuator will affect the main output only.

The MIXER
There are four audio signal inputs, each with its own fader pot and filter routing switch. Each routing switch can send each audio line to either VCF, BPF, or both VCF + BPF.

The 3 CV MODULATIONS – Choose Wisely
Incoming CV signals can be used to modulate any filter frequency cutoff. Signals can be up to +/- 10Vpp DC polar or AC bi-polar at the inputs.
| CV1 | has inverting and non-inverting behavior where zero is at 12:00.
| CV2 | has non-inverting behavior for both filters, and inverting available to VCF only
| KB | is a non-inverting V/OCT Keyboard Tracking control available to both the VCF and BPF, typically a Keyboard Voltage – but can be any kind of polar or bi-polar signal.

A Eurorack power connection ribbon cable is included. To get the most out of the filter experience follow your filter with a VCA. The filters require startup voltages on the low end to avoid audible thump, so there will be sub-frequency audio seepage. A post-filter VCA (sold separately) is recommended to gate the filter. Be sure to check out the G-Storm Electro 2xVCA when available.

The SH5-VCF pairs well with (sold separately)…

GSE 2xADSR

Innovative Instruments: Vongon Paragraphs - a musical demo of this gorgeous modulation pedal!

video by Joel Negus

"I took the Vongon Paragraphs for a spin around my home studio with the Teenage Engineering OP-1, the Arturia Polybrute, and my 1977 Rhodes. Listen to how this beautiful instrument interacts!

0:00 Introduction
2:32 OP-1 w/ Paragraphs
3:42 Polybrute w/ Paragraphs
4:43 Rhodes w/ Paragraphs"

"Paragraphs is an analog four-pole resonant low pass filter with an attack, decay (AD) envelope generator designed with focus on simplicity and flexibility.

Low Pass Filter

The heart of the filter circuit is the AS3320 analog chip — a modern replica of the same component used in analog classics like the Sequential Prophet 5, Pro-One mono-synth, Elka Synthex, and the LinnDrum. Cutoff spans the full audio spectrum and resonance starts to self-oscillate at about seventy percent.
Modulation

The envelope generator offers modulations in an uncommonly wide range of frequencies — starting as low as 0.05 hz for slowly evolving 20 second long cycles, and reaching up to (and past) the audio threshold at 300 hz for a wave shaping effect similar to sounds found on west coast style synthesizers (“think Buchla”).
Flexible Gain Stages

Paragraphs accepts instrument and line level signals. Dedicated controls for input (drive) and output level make it easy to move between a crystal clear clean tone and and a clipping fuzz. A multi-color LED provides a visual representation of the signal level. Red indicates clipping. Orange flashes indicate the start of overload. Green indicates the presence of signal at or below the nominal level.
CV and MIDI

Inputs for Control Voltage (CV) and midi are available to remotely trigger the envelope generator. This enables your Paragraphs to stay in rhythmic synchronization with external systems like midi sequencers, euroracks, and digital audio workstations."

Sequential Re-Introduces the Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 Synthesizers

"The new Prophet-5 is Dave Smith's return to the analog poly synth that changed the world. It embodies all three revisions of the legendary synth — Rev1, Rev2, Rev3 — and now, the Rev4. History never sounded better.

Soundtrack exclusively by Prophet-5. Yes, even the drums."

Both models will be available in October. The Prophet-5 has a US MAP of $3,499. The Prophet-10 has a US MAP of $4,299. Note there is an additional video demo by INHALT further below.

And the press release (pics below):

"Sequential Reintroduces the Prophet®-5, the Synth that Revolutionized an Industry

San Francisco, CA—Oct 1, 2020—After months of clandestine development, Sequential today announced the reintroduction of its most famous and beloved instrument: the Prophet-5. Timed to coincide with founder Dave Smith’s 70th year, the instrument revisits a landmark era in American analog synthesizer design and marks an authentic and authoritative return to roots for the legendary pioneer of electronic instruments.

“It’s not often that you get to revisit your past, retrieve some of its magic, and give it new life,” said Dave Smith. “The Prophet-5 was one of the most exciting instruments to appear in an equally exciting time for music and technology. It’s gratifying to rediscover that its sound and aesthetics are just as appealing now as they were then.”

Faithful to the original, the new Prophet-5 features five voices with two multi-waveform analog oscillators, resonant analog low-pass filters and amplifiers, and a filter and amplifier envelope per voice. Modulation is provided by a multi-waveshape LFO and Poly Mod, a ground-breaking modulation scheme for its time that allowed the filter envelope and oscillator B to be routed to a variety of destinations including filter cutoff frequency, oscillator A frequency, and oscillator A pulse width.

The new Prophet-5 features original, genuine Curtis VCOs and filters as used in the Prophet-5 Rev3, as well as the Dave Rossum-designed SSI 2140 filter, the modern counterpart of the original SSM 2040 Rossum designed in the Prophet-5 Rev1 and Rev2. “We made the new Prophet-5 the best of all Prophets by embodying all three revisions of the original. We did this by adding a Rev switch to the front panel, so you can choose your preferred filter.”

Smith continued, “We also researched what made the original P-5 sound the way it did — organic and alive — and found that a lot of that desirable character was due to fluctuations and differences in the response times and frequencies of the individual oscillators, filters, and envelopes from voice to voice. So we also added a Vintage knob that loosens all of them up like they were in the old days. You can dial in progressively more vintage character as you go from a very stable “4,” as in Prophet-5 Rev4, all the way to “1,” as in Prophet-5 Rev1, which was the most temperamental of all Prophet-5s. We’ve even included the original factory sound set for the full vintage experience.”

Other modern enhancements include velocity sensitivity and aftertouch to increase expressiveness, as well as MIDI and USB connectivity. Control voltage and gate ins/outs are also present for connecting modular synths and other gear. The new Prophet-5 is housed in a collector-worthy, premium-quality, steel and hand-oiled sustainable black walnut heartwood body, with a full, five-octave, semi-weighted Fatar keybed.

Sequential is simultaneously offering the Prophet-10, a ten-voice version of the synthesizer with the same sound engine and collector-worthy design. “I originally designed the first Prophet in both five-voice and ten-voice versions. But the five-voice model was the one that achieved mass production. We thought it would be fun and fitting to reintroduce the ten-voice as well, to make the circle complete.” Sequential Circuits’ later product, the dual-manual, bi-timbral Prophet-10, was a different instrument in both concept and execution.

Both models will be available in October. The Prophet-5 has a US MAP of $3,499. The Prophet-10 has a US MAP of $4,299."

Sequential Prophet 5 Rev4 INHALT Sound Design of Factory Patches Demo

"There are few synthesizers that spark deep emotions and reverence. The Prophet 5 is one of them. Its history is marked by both the counter and the dominant cultural works; wether listening to the independent outings of New Musik and Skinny Puppy, the art of Japan and Sakamoto, the disco of Cowely, the soundtracks of Carpenter or the pop of McCartney and Madonna, it collectively becomes clear that the Prophet 5 is the great enabler of the modern musical expression. If the Model D is the left hand the Prophet 5 is the right. And rightly so, as its genius and genuineness transitioned the 5 from "tool of novelty" firmly into the place of an exuberant enabler of the creative expression. From decade to decade, its design and purity allowed it to slot into a music production unweathered and unbiased by whatever style is in vogue. Yet, it's always fashionable and it always sits right where it's supposed to. Put simply, it's a workhorse that inspires. Whatever the revision. And now, that story, that lineage continues with the Rev 4.

It's with absolute honor, gratitude, and exhilaration that I accepted the offer to work on the factory patches for Sequential's latest chapter in the story of the Prophet 5. Sound designing alongside the superb voicing team has been a wonderful collaboration with a company I consider family and my way to give thanks for the career that the Prophet 5 has helped me build. Unlike other projects I've done in the past, part of my testing of the Rev 4 included putting it through an actual studio music production. I'm currently in the middle of producing two LP's (the artists Some Ember and Patriarchy) and the Rev 4 got used heavily on both. The main question I sought to answer: "does it handle the same as a vintage unit". What became abundantly clear: the Rev 4 isn't like a Prophet 5, isn't inspired by a Prophet 5, ins't referencing a Prophet 5; it is a Prophet 5. Through and through in every sense of the very defining characteristics of the 5. It's a Prophet 5. Period. And in many regards it's better. Why?

Rapid fire MIDI, Fatar keybed, both genuine SSM (SSI) filters and VCAs, genuine Curtis filters and oscillators, a perfectly tuned LFO and envelopes, the ability to actually save LFO amount settings, velocity, aftertouch, the same voice allocation as the original ... and zero repairs needed with no sacrifice to the soul of what makes the 5 the 5. It looks the same with minor additions that can be completely ignored if you choose. You can play it like the original and you can expect it to do exactly what the original does. Or you can take advantage of all of the modern facilities. I also made a set of patches that were the same sounds on both a vintage 5 and the Rev 4 and quickly cycling playing the same passage on the 2 instruments, for all in the room, it was impossible to tell what's what and who's who.

The amount of care, attention to detail, and workmanship that has gone into the Rev 4 is remarkable and I am honored to have been a part of the team putting it through the paces. Sequential is a special company. It's marked by integrity, friendship, care, and carries on a tradition of producing musical instruments from that platform. The Rev 4 is a Prophet 5 and ONLY Sequential can make that.

Please note, the Rev 4 in the video is a prototype unit and I recorded this with a beta firmware. As such, while the synth was largely done there are some changes both to the panel and to the OS that are in the final shipping version (obviously). The Prophet 5 was recorded straight into Pro Tools HD and no post processing or fx were added. What you're hearing is the raw Rev 4."

"Large 5.5 & 3.5 Floppy drive may or may not be working. Most are upgraded to a new Floppy emulator for unlimited possibilities in sample playback. These are easily available for $80+ depending upon 3.5 or 5.5 floppy emulator sizes.

Had the 5.5 cardboard floppy protector in the drive. Excellent physical condition. Has a few built in tomes that are clear when activated using your external midi devise to key samples.

This is being sold as it du to not having correct discs to load and modern floppy emulator provide the right enhancement to this classic machine.

WORNG Electronics Superbooth Home Edition 2020 - Parallax and Vertex

Published on Apr 24, 2020 WORNG Electronics

"Announcement and demos of the new WORNG Parallax stereo filter and Vertex stereo VCA
Jump to 4:45 to hear them in action, 6:20 for demos without talking"

"Parallax Stereo Low Pass Filter
Parallax is a stereo filter designed with a classic sound, a simple friendly interface, lots of modulation options and two flavours of output.

All outputs are available simultaneously, giving you more patching options."

"Vertex Stereo VCA
Vertex is a stereo VCA with some clever tricks up its sleeve to give you more control over the stereo domain. Vertex contains four analogue VCAs configured in such a way as to give you voltage control of the amplitude of a stereo signal (or make a mono signal stereo) as well as having control of the balance or panning of the signal.

Easily patch up a stereo signal path with a single envelope generator, skew your stereo image or pan a mono signal with CV. Vertex also takes advantage of the VCAs used to be able to saturate at unity gain without distorting your audio signal. This means that you can waveshape an AD envelope into an AHD using the Skew control to add punch to your patch, and use the Skew CV to dynamically alter the envelope timing to change the relative loudness between the Left and Right signals while still keeping the peak signal levels the same.

Vertex is also a great tool for controlling the dynamics of an XY signal for oscilloscope or vector laser patches."

Shutdown Sounds by Sensel

Published on Apr 16, 2020 Sensel

Playlist:

1. Sensel - Hugo R.A. Paris Sound Bath for UVI Falcon
Download from https://sensel.com/pages/sensel-hra-p...
This instrument was designed with sounds by artist Hugo R.A. Paris for the Sensel Morph Buchla Thunder Overlay using the default map for Preset 1 on the Thunder. It also works for the default MPE map for the Piano, Drum, and Music Production overlays.

MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) is used to create a "sound bath" instrument for ambient audio explorations.

Vertical gestures on each note control filter cutoff for a bandpass digital filter. After-pressure controls the stereo spread of the digital filter. Velocity selects the start point of the loop.

The long "feathers" of the Buchla Thunder control samples from a Paris composition, primarily using the 4MS SWN synthesizer.

Sequencer Jam - Sequential Pro 3, Arturia MatrixBrute, Moog Voyager & MF-101 - ExperimentalSynth

Published on Feb 19, 2020 experimentalsynth

"Sequential Pro 3 is the MIDI master clock. MatrixBrute sequencer is synced to it. A Pro 3 oscillator is sent out its audio-rate CV post and filtered by the MF-101. An aux envelope CV is also sent to modulate the MF-101 filter cutoff. The Voyager's filter cutoff is also modulated by a clock-synced S&H LFO. All are processed by a Line 6 Echo Pro also synced to the master clock. Learn more at experimentalsynth.com"

gstormelecto XaVCF Oberheim OB-Xa Eurorack Filter Module

gstormelecto XaVCF Test Filter Circuit [Audio Only Demo]

Published on Feb 16, 2020 gstormelectro

"Audio and Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2020

I've been getting requests for demos of my upcoming XaVCF module.
It will be a eurorack adaptation of the OB-Xa filter.
More info at https://www.modulargrid.net/e/g-storm...
You know this sound from Rush Tom Sawyer and Van Halen's album 1984.
While we're all eagerly awaiting the module prototype I thought
I would share a brief sampling from a mini-lab test circuit.
A more thorough overview of the module will happen when it gets built.
So be on the lookout for that one in the near future.

The XaVCF will sound pretty far out.
We're talking about full on intergalactic blast off here.
Headphones recommended. BUT!...
Watch your levels, thick resonant sweeps ahead!
Prepare for ignition...

"The XaVCF is a faithful adaptation of the OB-Xa filter in Eurorack with added features.

As with the original, the XaVCF has two filter circuits to choose from! The heart of both designs having each its own Alfa reissue AS3320 chip. The XaVCF has the original Modes: a 4-Pole standard Lowpass circuit, and a 2-Pole Lowpass derived from a State-Variable circuit. Additionally there are 1-Pole Bandpass and Lowpass modes not available on the original!

Both filter circuits on the XaVCF not only have musical self-oscillating resonance w/ CV control, but the frequency cutoff can be tracked V/Oct using the CV2 input jack. In this way the XaVCF can be used as a sine wave oscillator. Unlike some older classic filter designs, the XaVCF retains a lot of low end at higher resonance.

The XaVCF is drenched in that fat and creamy wall of sound you’ll not soon forget. Are you ready for the Xa experience?

FEATURES
* Two selectable filter circuit configuration Types: Type I-SVF 2-Pole Lowpass, and Type II 4-Pole Lowpass.
* Additional Modes: Type I 1-Pole Bandpass, Type II 1-Pole Lowpass
* Two voltage controlled input jacks for Frequency CUTOFF w/ signal attenuators. CV1 is an extended range input capable of providing some boost to weaker control signals. The CV2 input will track V/Oct when its pot is fully CW.
* A voltage controlled input jack for RESONANCE w/ a signal attenuator CV3.
* Two audio signal input jacks w/ individual attenuators. Above midpoint, these inputs can overdrive the filter from most Eurorack oscillators and audio sources. This is especially useful in Bandpass Mode to compensate its weaker audio output signal.

Available late February 2020
